The end of the beginning

The episode itself is reasonably good, if very slow. While there was nothing wrong with the long drawn out visual retrospective scenes in the original movie and the sequel, innocence, the long drawn out moments in SAC 2045 were not the same. They we simply long drawn out scene, where you pretty much knew what was going to happen and just wanted it to happen. The original SAC did not use this technique, but SAC 2045 does. Its not a bad technique and has its place, but it can quickly result in boredom. My final conclusion of the series is a bit surprising to me; I feel the main issue was actually the 3D graphics. I am not talking about the quality, which did get better, but how it affects the story arc. 2D animation lacks long drawn out movement related scenes. While they can still do these, such as the infamous elevator scene in Evangelion, in that case there was no movement and it is very rarely done, for good reason. 2D encourages dialog, as it's cheaper to have two people, almost motionless, talk to each other. In 2D when you have, as in this episode, moments where a protagonists roams around following clues, its short, sharp and to the point. This is not a bad episode, but is certainly not the best. It tries to setup a mystery which will have you coming back for season two, and in my case it will work, but only because its Ghost in the Shell. If this was any other series I would probably give up at this moment.
