For three weeks in October 1973, a group led by Egyptian and Syrian military waged war against Israeli forces across a number of different territorial areas in region. Known by various names, it is often referred to as the Yom Kippur War, so named for the Jewish holy day on which the fighting began. Other names for the conflict include the Ramadan War or the October War — but regardless of its moniker, the conflict led to the deaths of thousands of combatants and an eventual redrawing of territorial maps within the region.
“Valley of Tears,” a 10-part series currently airing on Israeli TV station Kan 11 and now streaming on HBO Max, examines the experiences of a number of soldiers in the midst of that unexpected battle. Though the series in the early going focuses on the perspective of the Israeli side of the conflict, this is not a homogenous exercise in heroic mythmaking.

American-Israeli filmmaker Yaron Zilberman set off to shed light on the 1995 assassination of the Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in “Incitement,” which world-premiered at Toronto in the Contemporary World Cinema section.
Nominated for 10 Ophir awards in Israel, “Incitement” charts the events leading up to the assassination of Rabin at the end of a peace rally celebrating the Oslo Accords and is told through eyes of the murderer, Yigal Amir, a promising young law student who progressively turns into a delusional ultranationalist.
“It’s one of the most traumatic stories in the history of Israel, along with the Yom Kippur war,” said Zilberman, whose last film was 2012 relationship drama “A Late Quartet.” “I was 27 years old at the time and it had a very strong impact on me and it was a trauma in Israel. So many taboos were broken by this murder … it was an attack on democracy and it...

In a passionately divided democracy, the hate-filled words of politicians, cultural influencers and the right-wing media incite an extreme nationalist to commit murder. Although this plot summary sounds as if could be ripped from recent U.S. headlines, “Incitement” is actually a provocative drama from Israeli helmer Yaron Zilberman (“A Late Quartet”), which looks at what inspired the devoutly Orthodox law student Yigal Amir to kill Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The assassination took place on Nov. 4, 1995, as Rabin was trying to orchestrate a comprehensive peace settlement between Israelis and Palestinians that involved giving up territory controled by Israel since the Six Day War, and his death effectively derailed the prospect of peace.
While “Incitement” is a compelling watch, with archival footage neatly woven in, and offers a salutary warning about how easily democracies are endangered, this psychological profile of a political assassin nevertheless falls into a kind of moral trap.

“Incitement,” about the promising Israeli law student who became an ultra-nationalist obsessed with assassinating Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. WestEnd Films is producing and will also launch sales on the picture at Tiff.
Rabin was serving his second term as Israel’s prime minister when he was shot and killed by Yigal Amir in 1995. The first still released from the film shows Yehuda Nahari Halevi (“Wedding Doll”) as Amir, burning a picture of Rabin at a protest.
The film is from Yaron Zilberman (“A Late Quartet”) and has been generating buzz on home turf, scoring 10 nominations in the Ophir Awards, the Israeli Oscars, including For best film. It was written by Zilberman with Ron Leshem, the Israeli-American award-winning writer behind the original Israeli “Euphoria” series, which has been successfully remade for HBO in the U.S. Both are also producers.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s filmmaking swings between ambitions — sweeping riffs on history (“Boogie Nights,” “There Will Be Blood,” “The Master”) and peculiar, enlightening character studies (“Hard Eight,” “Punch Drunk Love”). His ambling Thomas Pynchon adaptation “Inherent Vice” tried to merge those modalities, but “Phantom Thread” really pulls it off, with his most concise, endearing works in years, one that plumbs dark and mysterious Andersonian depths to unearth a surprising degree of warmth lurking within.
It also surprises with his strongest female lead in two decades of movies. Though some of the hype around “Phantom Thread” stems from Daniel Day-Lewis’ announcement of his retirement after this role, the world’s most revered Method Actor meets his match alongside stunning discovery Vicky Krieps. Dirk Diggler has great manners.
Every character in Boogie Nights has small details like this that encapsulate everything about them. Some of these qualities, such as Diggler's obsessive politeness whenever he's pulled away from a conversation, are written on the page. Others appear to be specific choices made by actors, like the way Philip Seymour Hoffman's Scotty J. nervously holds his arm during Jack and Dirk's confrontation.
As the film turns 20, Et is reexamining the breakthrough performances in Boogie Nights and Paul Thomas Anderson's showcase of incredible character actors.
Set in the late '70s, Boogie Nights chronicles 17-year-old busboy Eddie Adams’ (Mark Wahlberg) journey as he’s taken under the wing of pornography auteur Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) and into a world where he could finally become the bright shining star he always felt destined to be. Adams quickly transforms into the neon sign dynamite that is Dirk Diggler and takes the industry by storm...

As the new year starts, the annual NoBudge Awards are celebrating the best short films and features that were released for free online in 2016. The online screening site for new indie films has recognized a variety of shorts and movies in 10 categories, with “Thunder Road” and “Her Friend Adam” winning multiple awards.
“In our 4th year giving awards, NoBudge is more dedicated than ever in highlighting some of the most interesting filmmaking happening anywhere. It just so happens that these films are available for free (legally) online,” stated site founder and programmer Kentucker Audley. “The awards shine a light particularly on the often overlooked short-form filmmaking. Free from the constraints of length or being celebrity-driven, these young filmmakers are able to demonstrate singular visions that resonate deeply despite their limited resources.”

Night one of Dancing With the Stars’ two-night finale aired Monday, and with only four amazing stars remaining, it was going to be sad to see anyone get eliminated.
After a night of lukewarm "redemption" dances -- where stars got a chance to re-do a dance style that they'd previously performed -- and four amazing freestyle performances, there was no clear choice for elimination between Laurie Hernandez, Calvin Johnson Jr., James Hinchcliffe and Jana Kramer.
After it was announced that Hernandez and Johnson were safe and would be moving on to the final round of finals, it all came down to Kramer and Hinchcliffe, who'd both delivered a slew of perfectly-scored dances throughout the season.
However, when it came right down to it, Kramer couldn't compete with Hinchcliffe's amazing comeback story and the 32-year-old singer was sent packing, along with her pro-partner, Gleb Savchenko.

As I struggled, as every year, to get my end-of-year lists finished in a reasonably timely fashion, it occurred to me that I could publish half of the classical list earlier if I could find a reasonable way to split it into categories. Thus the non-contemporary/contemporary divide this year. The newer composers' work requires more listening; that's the only reason the older repertoire comes first.

Certainly it's hard to hear anything of significance that he wouldn't have liked about it, because it is a magnificent testament to everything that made him one of the greatest pianists who ever lived: one of the most beautiful piano tones ever heard, allied to liquid phrasing that gave him one of the greatest legato touches ever recorded.

A morning full of eye-opening surprises, the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced.
The standout nods were the inclusion of Straight Outta Compton, Beasts Of No Nation, Sarah Silverman, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Idris Elba and two for Dame Helen Mirren.
Not among the perceived hopefuls called were Sylvester Stallone, Charlotte Rampling, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, The Martian and The Hateful Eight.
Two nominating panels – one for television and one for film – each composed of 2,200 randomly selected union members from across the United States, chose this year’s nominees.

Hollywood blacklist drama Trumbo has led the nominations for the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards with three nods for lead actor Bryan Cranston, supporting actress Helen Mirren and the ensemble cast. The Martian and The Hateful Eight were shut out.
Set in 1947, the film centres on Dalton Trumbo (Cranston), who was Hollywood’s top screenwriter, until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs.
Cranston will go up against Johnny Depp for Black Mass, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs and Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl.
Films that secured two nominations included Beasts Of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight - whose outstanding cast nod will only strengthen its status as best picture Oscar frontrunner — and Steve Jobs.

The 22nd annual SAG Awards nominations were announced this morning and it's full of surprises! Sylvester Stallone, loved by critics and the National Board of Review for his performance in "Creed," was ignored. So was Kristen Stewart's supporting performance in "Clouds of Sils Maria." Matt Damon, who was so good and carried "The Martian" from start to finish, was also missing from the list.
But here's what I love about the SAG noms. First, Sarah Silverman's first dramatic performance in "I Smile Back" was embraced. And I'm also happy with the inclusion of "Room's" Brie Larson and the fantastic child actor, Jacob Tremblay. The endearing "Carol" also received noms for both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and Saoirse Ronan's performance in the beautiful "Brooklyn" also received a nomination.
The big winner of the SAG noms is Bleecker Street's "Trumbo." Missing from earlier critics awards (see here...

Nominees for the 22nd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were unveiled this morning in Hollywood, with a fair amount of surprises to be had. Leading the pack is Trumbo, which picked up three nominations, then a large batch of films behind it with two each: Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Carol, The Danish Girl, Room, Spotlight, and Steve Jobs.
Perhaps most surprising is no mention of The Hateful Eight, which has one of the year’s best ensembles. Also of questionable note is the inclusion of Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold, a film all but forgotten (we suppose Harvey Weinstein’s campaigning indeed worked). There’s also the welcome nods to Michael Shannon in 99 Homes and Sarah Silverman in I Smile Back, as well as an ensemble nod to Straight Outta Compton. Check out the full list of nominees below ahead of the ceremony on Saturday, Jan.

For the first time ever, Donald Cammell’s obscure 1987 serial killer thriller White of the Eye is available on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States (the UK arm of Arrow Video brandished its own striking package of the title in early 2014). Director of only four features, including his iconic 1970 debut Performance (co-directed by Nicolas Roeg), Cammell’s quartet of features were all labors of love, the filmmaker undergoing significant set backs on each project up until his death following 1995’s Wild Side.
With seven to ten years in-between each outing, this feature marked the end of a decade long hiatus following 1977’s adaptation of the Dean Koontz novel Demon Seed starring Julie Christie. Adapting from an obscure novel by brothers Laurence and Andrew Klavan (a notable writer of mystery thrillers) writing under the pseudonym Margaret Tracy, Cammell’s wife and actress China Kong co-wrote the screenplay. At a loss for what to watch this week? From new DVDs and Blu-rays, to what's streaming on Netflix, we've got you covered.
New on DVD and Blu-ray
"NCIS"
'Tis the season for a ton of TV shows to come out on DVD, including "NCIS: The Twelfth Season," "NCIS: Los Angeles - The Sixth Season," and "NCIS: New Orleans - The First Season" on August 18. Have yourself a merry little "NCIS" marathon! And in case you want more details on Season 12, that Blu-ray comes with deleted scenes, audio commentary on select episodes, cast and crew interviews, and over an hour of behind-the-scenes featurettes.
"Grey's Anatomy"
The 2014-2015 season of "Grey's" -- which didn't have the happiest of endings, but oh well -- is also coming out this week. If you watch Season 11 from start to finish, knowing how it ends, maybe it'll add more pathos. Or maybe it'll just make you angrier.

Seth Grossman has produced dozens of reality shows for MTV, VH1, National Geographic, and Fox, on subjects ranging from drug addiction to adult virgins in love. Between reality gigs, he writes and directs feature films and co-wrote the classical music drama A Late Quartet, which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman. On every reality show I’ve ever worked, a point comes when the producers face one another in exasperated bafflement over some production nightmare — a paranoid cast member with a vendetta against a Pa, a drunk executive steering the show off the rails — and say, “This should be the show.” And so Lifetime’s new scripted drama UnREAL, a look behind the scenes of a Bachelor-like reality show (called Everlasting), was inevitable. Through reality-tv field producer Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a T-shirt feminist whose legal fees have forced her into indentured servitude on Everlasting, the show explores the moral hazards that...

There’s a very good chance that you’ll be seeing the above performers in a WWE ring very soon, particularly with the WWE Network adding extra exposure to Nxt’s show.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the recruits to improve their potential in the business. The Performance Center boasts seven training rings, a world-class strength and conditioning program and cutting-edge edit and production facilities
