Thomas Middleditch is up for his first Emmy Award this year, for his role in HBO's lauded Silicon Valley. The show's cast is by and large made up of the kind of salt-of-the-Earth, journeyman comedians who have been plugging away in the trenches before landing starring roles on pay cable, and Middleditch is no exception. He has a long history in the comedy scene that includes stints at Chicago's Second City and the odd pilot that never got picked up. So if you're a Middleditch fan, here are five places beyond the Valley you can see your favorite lanky Canadian comedian.

The comedy mind behind one of the greatest workplace comedies of all time – that would be Office Space – is now at work on a television series. However, this working world will probably be devoid of smarmy middle-level management asking dryly for Tps reports. Mike Judge is now focusing on the unconventional, tech-heavy workplaces of Silicon Valley, his first cable series since Beavis and Butt-head aired on MTV.
Silicon Valley follows a group of nerds who decide to launch their own start-up company, to predictably poor results, in the Bay Area setting referred to as the “cradle of innovation.” According to HBO, the series is about “the high tech gold rush of modern Silicon Valley, where the people most qualified to succeed are the least capable of handling success.” The first teaser for the comedy series is now online and mostly consists of profane and sexually charged humour. However, this looks...

One of the biggest surprises of Syfy's campy fun flick "Swamp Shark" was seeing the performance of actor Jason Rogel (Splinterheads), cast as Martin the bus boy in this Louisiana potboiler of ridiculous premise and effects. Rogel joined Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Db Sweeney (The Event, The Cutting Edge) on a mission to save the people of Gator Fest from being shredded to death by a beastly shark. "Swamp Shark" aired this past Saturday, June 25th at 9pm (Pst) on the SyFy channel. Martin worked in the funky waterside restaurant for the Broussard clan led by Kristy Swanson, and had an unrequited love crush on her baby sister Krystal (Sophie Sinise), who he worked with.

I tend to avoid filmmakers like Nicole Holofcener because their films look so smarmy and pretentious. You can practically smell the stink of privilege and arrogance wafting off them. Like people who use both hands to grab your knee and gush about this art installation they just saw or quote articles they just read on Slate as if they've possessed the information for years. People who scoff at SUVs and explain how green they are because they switched to an organic shampoo. The smug fucks who harp on our government's failures to aid third world countries and then transport half their remaining plate of organic butternut squash ravioli home in a styrofoam container to throw it out there instead. But this is where I did Nicole Holofcener a grievous disservice, as she clearly hates them just as much as I do. Please Give is nothing more than a ribald rip...

You can add Thomas Middleditch to your list of awkwardly cute leading men. In Splinterheads he plays a guy looking for purpose and love (as most man-child characters do). In comes Rachael Taylor (the Austrailian computer nerd from Transformers) who plays a lady working at a traveling carnival. She has a crappy boyfriend, a crappy job but to keep her sanity goes geocaching. What is geocaching? It's kind of like a hipster scavenger hunt played with a bunch of random people across the country. The movie makes it look cool. Overall, Splinterheads is light-hearted comedy with a fun supporting cast, two likable leads and some delightful quirky moments.

Terry Kinney has joined CBS' drama pilot "The Line," and Thomas Middleditch has joined Josh Schwartz's CBS comedy pilot "Hitched."
"Line" centers on an Atf agent (Dylan Walsh) who hunts down the most dangerous criminals.
Kinney, repped by Icm and manager Emily Gerson Saines, will play a bank robber who is a poet, philosopher and sociopath.
The ensemble "Hitched," which Schwartz co-wrote with Matt Miller, revolves around a newlywed couple (Kristin Kreuk and Jack Carpenter) dealing with their family and friends.
Middleditch ("Splinterheads"), repped by Wme and Kirsten Ames Management, will play their best friend, a hopeless, single romantic.

I just watched this clip three times. I'm still not sure what's going on. My brain definitely melted a bit though, so that's good.
"Splinterheads" hits DVD today, an improv-heavy indie comedy which follows Justin Frost (Thomas Middletitch) as he falls in with the wacky folks who work for a traveling carnival. Justin joins in on the madness when he falls for one of the crew, and an offbeat brand of hilarity ensues.
The below clip actually comes from the DVD's bonus features, a video featuring Middletitch and fellow star Jason Rogel. The duo take some time out to let us all know about the magical Wayne Chng and his fabulous landscaping services, capable of fending off snakes, bears and hawks.
Like I said... melty brain. Enjoy!

The comedy Splinterheads is set to make its DVD debut on February 16th from Monarch Home Video and M&C.s giving away five copies! Called .Easily one the best films of the year,. by National Lampoon, Splinterheads brings home the insane humor of such slacker comedies as Adventureland and Superbad. Starring Brat-packer Lea Thompson (All the Right Moves, Back to the Future) and Rachael Taylor (Transformers, Shutter), Splinterheads launches the comedic talents of Thomas Middleton as Justin Frost, a twenty-something slacker who has decided that his "thing" is that he has no "thing" at all. When a small-time carnival rolls into town, he meets Galaxy, a gorgeous con artist who has more "things" going for her than anyone he...

Splinterheads
Directed by: Brant Sersen
Cast: Thomas Middleditch, Rachel Taylor, Lea Thompson, Jason Rogel
Running Time: 1hr 34 min
Rating: R
Release Date: November 13, 2009
Plot: Justin (Middleditch) is an average guy living an average life when his world is shaken up by the arrival of a traveling carnival and a bewitching splinterhead (Taylor). I’d call her a carnie, but the movie is very specific about the difference between the two.
Who’S It For? If you liked Napolean Dynamite, you’ll love Splinterheads. It isn’t that the films are similar in plot, but they are both consummate charmers.
Expectations: None. I had no idea. Bayer sent Splinterheads as a screener to my home, and usually he sends me screeners like, Toast and the Civil War: Rye So Sad?, so I did assume it would drag in parts.

Splinterheads will be opening this weekend at the Regal Arbor Cinema in Austin, TX, Friday, November 13th for a limited and exclusive engagement. Austin is one of three cities selected along with Portland, Oregon, and New York City to run Splinterheads’ theatrical release so far. Director Brant Sersen, whose previous film Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story won the Audience Award at the 2004 SXSW Film Festival, will be in attendance at the November 13th opening; with leading man Thomas Middleditch possibly joining as well. Splinterheads premiered at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. If you were in Austin this past weekend, you may have also seen the Splinterheads dunking booth at Fun Fun Fun Fest. Director: Brant Sersen Writer(s): Brant Sersen Starring: Thomas Middleditch, Rachael Taylor, Lea Thompson, Christopher McDonald, Dean Winters, Frankie Faison, Jason Rogel Justin Frost (Thomas Middleditch) is a quirky, hyper and lanky twenty-something slacker. He works for his rotund best friend Wayne’s (Jason Rogel) landscaping business and still lives in his hometown with his mother (Lea Thompson from Back to the Future). Other than karate, he doesn’t seem to have any hobbies or skills or ambitions; as Justin proclaims, his “thing” is that he has no “thing” at all. Justin is preyed upon by a sexy con-artist named Galaxy (Rachael Taylor from Transformers). Galaxy is a carnie, uh-hum splinterhead, with a traveling carnival that has come to Justin’s home town. Since there’s little else to do, Justin and Wayne wind up spending a lot of time hanging around the carnival, thus bumping into Galaxy often.

It's beginning to look a bit like Christmas as Disney's "A Christmas Carol" bowed during the weekend to an estimated $31 million at the North American boxoffice. That number wasn't as big a holiday gift as the studio was hoping for, but with Christmas seven weekends away, the 3D movie has time to spread cheer.
There already is plenty for Oscar contender "Precious" to celebrate: Lionsgate's select-theaters debut of Lee Daniels' drama about an abused inner-city teen took in an enthusiastic $1.8 million in 18 theaters in four cities for a powerful $100,000 per-screen average.
But with the second weekend of the Michael Jackson documentary "This Is It" holding the second spot, dropping just 40% from its opening, the frame's other arrivals found it tougher to secure a foothold.
Overture's military satire "The Men Who Stare at Goats" checked in at third place with $13.3 million. Although finishing in fourth place, Universal's horror thriller...

Christopher McDonald admits it: "I love to work," says the 54-year-old actor, who turns up in Splinterheads, opening today (11.06.09) in limited release. Then he shrugs and adds, "Terms like 'ubiquitous' are not good. I think I'm one of the only actors who's had two films opening against each other on the same weekend, like, five different times. But hey, I don't choose the dates. I just like great parts." Or parts he can convince himself might be great: "I don't say yes to everything," he argues. "I do turn things down. But I do look for ways to say yes." "For me, it's got to be a good story, or I've got to like the character. It might be about who's directing it or who else is involved. Clockwise from upper left: Splinterheads, Ghost World, An Education, House of the Devil.
Opening. Amiable and pleasant, Splinterheads revolves around a romance between Justin (Thomas Middleditch), an aimless small town dreamer, and Galaxy (Rachael Taylor), a gorgeous grifter who (literally) bumps into him at a gas station. She's more interested in separating him from his money than getting to know the lunkhead within, while he quickly decides that he's met the love of his life -- or, even better, a reason to leave his upstate New York world behind and start living for himself instead of his mother and grandfather.
Brent Sersen (Blackballed) is a better director than writer; the characters hold few surprises and the plot's trajectory threatens to die of old age before it reaches its pre-ordained conclusion. Still, he takes advantage of a visiting carnival and the grifter's obsession with geocaching, a variation on treasure hunting, to...

2009 is about to end with a bang, though probably not the apocalyptic kind predicted in the long-awaited adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" or Chris Smith's terrifying doc "Collapse," though those will both be playing at your local arthouse. Instead, audiences will be able to enjoy a winter of wildly different indie film offerings to reflect the wildly different tastes of moviegoers as we leave one decade and move into another. (There are also many different ways to watch them, as you can tell from our Anywhere But a Movie Theater section.)

You'd expect a host of eccentric and colorful characters in an indie movie about the folks behind a traveling carnival, and the quirky comedy Splinterheads nails them all like darts in a balloon. But it's the film's grounded sense of realism that gives it a heart, thanks in part to a supporting performance from Lea Thompson. "Paranormal Activity" has now made more than $85 million thanks to moviegoers literally demanding to see the low-budget horror flick in their city. And while grassroots promotional campaigns are nothing new in the film industry, this recent success is sure to spur more elaborate strategies from the studios. So every week I'll be spotlighting a few titles opening in limited release that are worthy of your time.

When producer Thomas Woodrow began debating the ideal launchpad for his movie "True Adolescents," he ran through the usual festival suspects: Sundance, Cannes, Toronto and Telluride.
But Woodrow decided to premiere his $1 million comedy featuring Oscar nominee Melissa Leo at South by Southwest, a fest that until recently was known as an afterthought to the powerhouse music event that runs alongside it.
Sure, "Adolescents" is music-oriented, aimed at the same young, hip audience that flocks to Austin each March, and its star, Mark Duplass, is well-known locally.
But more importantly, "the fact a golden handful of distributors who are potential partners are certainly going to be there made it the obvious choice," Woodrow says.
His decision to go with South by Southwest (SXSW or "South By," as it is known) reflects the increasing relevance of the fest heading into its 16th go-round, which begins today and runs through March 21.

SXSW is one of my favorite festivals of the year as it showcases some of the best and most innovative real independent films, and with this host of world premiers, it's also playing alot of Sundance material as well as genre fare from all over the world, many of which we've covered heavily in these pages.
From the Sundance lineup, we have films like Moon, The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle, You Won't Miss Me, Grace, and Humpday, among others.
For the world genre material we've covered, there's Lake Mungo, The Square, Zift, and Awaydays.
I think you get the point that lots of great looking film will be playing. I'll leave a bit of the exploration to you..

Rachael Taylor has been set to star in "Splinterheads," a carnival-set comedy written and directed by Brant Sersen.
Taylor will play a carnie con artist who dupes and then forms a relationship with a local twentysomething slacker, played by Chicago Second city veteran Thomas Middleditch. The film will play against the colorful backdrop of performers and showmen.
Darren Goldberg and Chris Marsh will produce via their nascent Atlantic Pictures banner; Anisa Qureshi also will produce. Christopher McDonald and Lea Thompson also star.
The Wma-repped Taylor, whose breakout role came last year in "Transformers," recently starred in the Fox thriller "Shutter."
Sersen directed "Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story," a comedy about paintballers that starred Rob Corddry.
Production on "Splinterheads" is set to begin next month.
