Put your wallets away folks, it's another slow week for new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. With the exception of Noah Baumbach's Greenberg starring Ben Stiller, which is one of the better movies of the year thus far, there isn't much out there worth spending your money on. Atom Egoyan's Chloe hits stores today, along with The Greatest starring Carey Mulligan and Pierce Brosnan, and The Bounty Hunter starring Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler. Also, in the non-fiction department we have 8: The Mormon Proposition and the John Hughes doc Don't You Forget About Me. Other than that, you can revisit Christopher Nolan's Insomnia on Blu-ray... and that's about it. Do you see anything worth buying or renting this week? Insomnia I just posted my review of this Blu-ray and while this isn't exactly a personal favorite, fans of this film will particularly enjoy this release. The film looks and sounds great and it comes with a solid group of special features, especially Chris Nolan's commentary, presented in the order he shot the film. You can read my full review right here. Universal Catalog Blu-ray
Alpha Dog / Assault on Precinct 13 / In Bruges This is a decent trio of films although I have no real desire to watch Alpha Dog again and Assault on Precinct 13, while fun, could be replaced by just about any other action thriller you may already have in your collection. But, In Bruges, if you don't already own this one now is the time to pick it up. It's a great film and a ton of fun.

How awesome is Kurt Russell? He's so awesome I had to dedicate two articles on how manly he is and how his movies have been some the greatest cult classics to ever hit the big screen. We haven't seen Kurt in a few years since he played Stuntman Mike in Death Proof. Albuquerque – This sleepy town is getting rocked awake by a mad bomber in Deadly Impact. Thomas Armstrong (Boondock Saints’s Sean Patrick Flanery) is a cop that is forced to shoot his wife in order to save 10 people that are being held hostage by The Lion (The Matrix’s Joe Pantoliano). The ugliness of the moment cause Armstrong to quit the force and devote himself to booze. Eight years later The Lion reappears. The FBI wants Armstrong’s help in identifying him, but can he tangle with the diabolical madman who has promised to blow up the city?
Deadly Impact is an action rush with Pantoliano using the power of Bluetooth for evil. Here’s the trailer for the film:
The movie is out on DVD this week. I had a chance to swap email with Director Robert Kurtzman and Producer David S. Greathouse. The duo had previously made Buried Alive.

Director: Hue Rhodes Writer: Hue Rhodes Starring: Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Peter Dinklage, Sarah Silverman, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho, Matthew McDuffie We are introduced to John Alighieri (Steve Buscemi) – a last name he shares with the writer of the short story on which this film is based, Dante Alighieri – as he attempts to buy $1,000 worth of instant lottery tickets at a Las Vegas gas station (with cold hard cash, of course). Before we are allowed to learn whether or not he will be successful in purchasing the hefty sum of tickets, let alone win, first time writer-director Hue Rhodes's film jumps back a few days to when John was stuck in a hopelessly monotonous cubicle job as an insurance claims adjuster in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Steve Buscemi's obvious love for indie film coupled with his often fearless role choices means that on occasion his choices end in a miss, not a hit. In the case of Saint John of Las Vegas, it's more miss than hit.
A quirky near-morality tale of a recovering gambler on the verge of a change in luck and love, insurance agent John Alighieri (Buscemi) is up for a promotion if he helps prove fraud on an insurance claim. While he leaves a budding romance with a smiley-obsessed co-worker (Sarah Silverman) behind, he embarks on a surreal journey to the outskirts of Las Vegas with Virgil (Romany Malco), his new mentor in insurance fraud investigation.

Dude here again. With your weekly Avatar report! Yes, I've decided to fully sell out and devote my entire article, and every writing from here on, to the magnificent splendor of James Cameron's Avatar. Sure there may be other movies out there, but can any of them match the wonder and beauty of the world of Pandora?
You know, besides the vampire movies with the sparkly emo kids?
This weekend, another film steps up to the plate and misses, as Mr. Cameron's masterpiece of technology and story continues its reign. Let's go to the numbers, shall we? (All in millions, remember, and these are the studio estimates. The actuals will be available on Monday).
1. Avatar (Fox) $30.0, 3074 screens, week 7, $594.4 total 2. Edge of Darkness (WB)- $17.1, 3066 screens, week 1, $17.1 total 3. When In Rome (Bv)- $12.0, 2456 screens, week 1, $12.0 total 4. Somewhere around the late summer of 2005, actor Romany Malco seemingly materialized out of nowhere to find breakout success in both "The 40 Year Old Virgin" and TV's "Weeds," and has continued to be a sly comedic force to be reckoned with in such films as "Blades of Glory," "Baby Mama" and "The Love Guru." Unlike so many of his Hollywood co-stars therein, Malco didn't actually springboard out of stand-up or sketch comedy, and even acting came completely by accident (one could say light coercion, but more on that later). No, Malco's showbiz path began as a young member of the hip-hop foursome the College Boyz, whose radio hit "Victim of the Ghetto" made the Billboard Hot 100 back in the early '90s. And while we're on the subject of rap, one of his earliest performances was in the title role of VH1's 2001 movie "Too Legit: The Mc Hammer Story.

Anyone who has ever gambled in a Las Vegas casino probably has encountered that awful downturn, the moment where your luck starts to turn bad and then even worse; soon, you've lost all the money you've gained as well as the money you had when you sat down. (Or maybe that's just us!) That sinking feeling seems to be the normal pattern suffered by Steve Buscemi's John Alighieri in Hue Rhodes' comedy Saint John of Las Vegas until he leaves Vegas and takes a job working at an insurance company in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While trying to get a raise to impress his cute cubicle neighbor Jill (Sarah Silverman), John is coerced by his tough boss (Peter Dinklage) to team with the company's top fraud investigator Virgil, played by Romany Malco ( The 40-Year-Old Virgin ), to look into...

For the past few decades, actor Steve Buscemi has cornered the market on playing quirky characters with serious inner demons lurking beneath the surface. His latest role in the film Saint John of Las Vegas (which opens in limited release on January 29) adds another memorable loser to his list of roles—a gambling addict who hits the road with an insurance investigator in order to get a big promotion. Buscemi sat down with CinemaSpy to discuss his role in the new film, as well as his work in films like The Messenger and the upcoming HBO series, Boardwalk Empire.
CinemaSpy: You’re working with first time writer-director Hue Rhoades on this film. What was it about the script that made you want to work with him?
Steve Buscemi: It just had a lot of the elements that I look for in scripts. It was character driven. I like ensemble films.

Hue Rhodes is every professor.s dream. He may have arrived at Nyu to study film rather late compared to his peers, but his drive to succeed and passion for the art made him a model student. During a roundtable interview, the first time writer/director gushed about all he learned at school and how it made him the filmmaker he is today. His mentors should be proud because his feature debut, Saint John of Las Vegas, makes its way into theaters in New York and Los Angeles on January 29th with a wider release planned for February 12th. What.s even more impressive is the brilliant minds he attracted to join the project. Not only does the film star Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho and Emmanuelle Chriqui, but it.s executive produced by Buscemi, Wren Arthur, Stanley Tucci and Spike Lee.

Steve Buscemi is one of our most recognizable character actors. In the recent "The Messenger," a Grade-a film about a pair of soldiers whose duty is to go to the families of the war deceased to offer condolence, Buscemi registers in a serious role. He's a guy who has just been told that his son was killed in action and who reacts in an abusive manner, as though his visitors are not just the messengers. Here in Saint John, he monopolizes the screen, but sad to say, the road trip/buddy movie is trite, offers nothing new, is surprisingly unfunny, even embarrassing when writer-director Hue Rhodes features scene between Buscemi's character as that of a co-worker in his insurance company.

Director: Jacques Audiard
Summary: Sent to prison, Malik El Djebena falls under the sway of a group of Corsicans who enforce their rule in the prison. As the 'missions' go by, he toughens himself and wins their confidence but uses his intelligence to discreetly develop his own network.
Analysis: Finally scoring a limited release in the Us in February, Jacques Audiard's violent and hard-edged prison drama won the Grand Prix at Cannes, scored Best Film at the London Film Festival, and is already the hotly tipped favourite to take the Oscar for Best Foreign Film late next month.

James and I had the opportunity to attend the premiere of Saint John Of Las Vegas at the CineVegas Film Festival this summer. You can read James’ review Here and see some of our red carpet coverage Here. I was excited to see this film because it features Steve Buscemi in a leading man role. He is one of those great supporting actors that are long overdue for a leading role.

I'm not entirely sure why, but Steve Buscemi hasn't been in anything besides independent films recently. He hasn't appeared in any major feature films since I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, although he is also in Youth in Revolt. Saint John of Las Vegas is a new indie from a fist-time filmmaker starring Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and Tim Blake Nelson. I'd never heard of it before today, but it looks great, and I'm quite interested in checking it out. It's a small indie film about a compulsive gambler who gets lured back into Las Vegas. Check it out, it looks kinda fun. The first trailer for IndieVest Pictures' Saint John of Las Vegas has dropped, and it looks funny in that dry, Coen brothers sort of way that has you laughing at things that in any normal situation you might feel bad for laughing at. It's a virtual who's who of .that guys. with the ultimate .that guy. rocking the top line, Steve Buscemi. Other support comes in various comedic forms from Sarah Silverman, Peter Dinklage, John Cho and Romany Malco (that black guy from 40-Year-Old Virgin), with the always jaw-dropping Emmanuelle Chriqui rounding out the cast. Saint John premiers in January, so keep an eye out for if it makes it to your town.

Steve Buscemi. That's all you need to know. Okay, it's not all, but it should be a good enough reason to watch the trailer. Before John is sent off to Vegas to investigate a car accident with his bosses top fraud debunker (Romany Malco), he gets into a relationship with his crazy female co-worker (Sarah Silverman). I'll be up front about it:
This ain't the greatest trailer. It looks like a funny movie that was edited into a lousy trailer. At least, that's what I'm hoping happened, because there's a lot to love about Saint John of Las Vegas. It's the first film directed by Hue Rhodes (who also wrote the screenplay), so that's obviously a bit of a concern. It's about an ex-gambler whose straight job ends up sending him back to Vegas, the site of his old life's woes. Hijinks apparently ensue.
The goods far outweigh the potential bads. For one? Steve Buscemi, who is consistently excellent, even when he's in lousy movies. Romany Malco, otherwise known as Jay in The 40 Year-Old Virgin ("You ever heard of Rollin' 20s, nigga? Since I was sixteen, nigga. I'm saying, "frosty." You know what I'm saying? "Spoon", nigga. We fucked dwarves in the ass.") Sarah Silverman,...

IndieVest Pictures, the L.A.-based indie film financier and distributor, has struck a home entertainment output deal with Vivendi Entertainment. While Indie will handle its own theatrical distribution, Vivendi will handle TV, VOD and DVD as well as digital and mobile rights for IndieVest titles.
IndieVest, which aims to produce six to eight films a year, will launch its first release, Hue Rhode's "Saint John of Las Vegas," in February. The film stars Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Sarah Silverman, Tim Blake Nelson, Peter Dinklage, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Jesse Garcia and John Cho.
"We are creating a multi-genre, commercially driven, production slate that guarantees our filmmakers theatrical distribution, and can't imagine a better home entertainment partner than Vivendi Entertainment to bring our titles to the largest possible audiences," IndieVest president Mark Burton said.
The deal was negotiated by Yolanda Macias on behalf of Vivendi and Mark Burton and attorney Glenn Feig for IndieVest Pictures.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Saint John of Las Vegas, which stars Steve Buscemi as a recovering gambling addict who ditches Las Vegas (and his problems) for a job with an auto insurance company, only to find himself forced to confront his old demons when he returns to Sin City on a job assignment. With a cast that also includes Romany Malco, Peter Dinklage, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho and Sarah Silverman, however, that basic plot description barely scratches the surface of this wickedly wild Vegas dramedy that works as a sort of parallel to Dante's Divine Comedy and includes wheelchair-bound strippers, nude militants and a carnival human torch, among other freakishly colorful characters.

- Saint John of Las Vegas received its festival debut in...you guessed it. I'm not sure how it faired as the opening film for CineVegas, but I'm a fan of the casting line-up (Steve Buscemi, Sarah Silverman and Peter Dinklage which trickles down to a wheelchair-bound stripper (Emmanuelle Chriqui), a nude militant (Tim Blake Nelson), a park Ranger (Jesse Garcia), and a carnival human torch (John Cho). The film is pegged to receive a Fall release, several months after we forget about The Hangover. Set in the not so original backdrop of Vegas, Hue Rhodes’ film sees Buscemi (who has a great supporting cameo-like role in Oren Moverman's The Messenger) as a compulsive gambler, runs away from Las Vegas and toward a normal job and life. Taking a nondescript position in an auto insurance company in Albuquerque, he tries to get ahead in the straight world, amid the

Tom McCarthy will helm the fantasy pilot of "Game of Thrones" for HBO. Peter Dinklage, who starred in McCarthy's first feature "The Station Agent," has been tapped for a key role. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss penned the pilot script based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling "Songs of Fire and Ice" novels. The story is of a power struggle set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom. Apprently, Dinklage plays the Queen's brother Tyrion, who is treated as an outsier due to his size. Mark Huffam and Frank Doelger are producing. Benioff and Weiss will additionally serve as executive producers on the project. The folks at CineVegas have officially announced their 2009 film lineup for their 11th annual engagement, set to run from June 10-15, 2009. The festival will close with a screening of Bobcat Goldthwait's World's Greatest Dad, my absolute favorite film from this year's Sundance Film Festival. If you didn't get a chance to hit Sundance or SXSW this year, CineVegas should definitely be on your agenda as it has scored many of the best films from both festivals. We had a swell time at the CineVegas Film Festival last year -- no surprise, considering it's a party-oriented fest set in the heart of glitzy, glamorous, sweaty Las Vegas. Oh, and they show movies, too, and they've just announced nine world premieres for the 11th edition of CineVegas, to be held June 10-15.
The opening-night gala will center around Saint John of Las Vegas, starring Steve Buscemi as a recovering gambling addict whose job requires him to return to Sin City. Sarah Silverman, Tim Blake Nelson, John Cho, and Peter Dinklage co-star, which means hilarity cannot fail to ensue.
The entire slate has not been announced yet, but the eight other world premieres have been. Here's a brief rundown:
Asylum Seekers: Six about-to-lose-it individuals check into a mental institution, then find there's only room for one of them. Daylight: A pregnant newlywed is taken hostage. I don't know how this ends,...
