Cannes — Adrián Suar, Latin America’s most extraordinary hyphenate, sits in Cannes’ Palais des Festivals, the Croisette behind him, ready to talk up his latest pioneering move in the Latin American TV entertainment scene.
That’s no minor detail. As Fox pushes ever more into a digital cord-cutting world, Suar’s show, “The Host,” currently rates as the No 1 original production from Fox Networks Group Latin America on the new Fox + app.
Suar’s at Cannes, because, in a world of ever more global localization, the idea could also export as a format to other countries too.
“The Host” is just the latest move in a remarkably broad career.
For the Argentine public, Suar’s one of the most recognizable faces of a hugely popular line in Argentine comedy of manners: 2008’s “A Boyfriend For My Wife,” “Just Like Me” in 2010, 2012’s “2 + 2” and last year’s “I Married a Dumbass,...

Normally we read about which new Korean thriller has had its remake rights snatched up by a Hollywood studio (news which invariably leads to a fervent chorus of opposition among Korean film fans) but these days we're starting to see an increasing amount of major Korean releases based on overseas properties. If we discount Japan, recent Korean films based upon foreign films include the 2012 romcom All About My Wife (based on the 2008 Argentine film Un novio para mi mujer) and last summer's surveillance thriller Cold Eyes (based on the Johnny To-producer Hk feature Eye in the Sky from 2007). Following in their footsteps is the action-thriller The Target, this time based on 2010's Point Blank from France. Closely following the French original, The...

Although it may sound worryingly like just another Korean romantic comedy, “All About my Wife” is thankfully a film with a lot more to offer. Directed by Min Kyu Dong (“Antique”), the film is actually a remake of the 2008 Argentinean “A Boyfriend for My Wife”, and follows the efforts of an unhappy husband to try and sabotage his marriage by hiring another man to seduce his wife. The offbeat premise certainly hit home with Korean audiences, and the film emerged as one of the year’s biggest domestic blockbusters, notching up over 4.5 million admissions. The film opens sweetly enough, with Jung In (Lim Soo Jung, “I’m a Cyborg, but that’s Ok”) and Doo Hyun (Lee Seon Gyun, also in the excellent “Petty Romance”) meeting in Japan during an earthquake and falling in love. Fast forward some seven years, and their marriage has soured, Doo Hyun struggling to put...

Back in high school, there was a girl in my class who was unbelievably attractive, but also neurotic, painfully insecure, and dull as white poster board. Everyone wanted to date her, until we actually dated her. But all she wanted was to be in a relationship, but breaking up with her would turn her into a sniveling mess. So we came up with a plan. It wasn't an organized plan, or a conspiracy. It was an epiphany each of us who dated her came up with individually and on our own. Instead of breaking up with her, we'd just introduce her to someone else that she could date. And it worked. Every time. Someone would "go steady" with her for three months, then find someone else to go steady with her for three months. It was win win for everyone; we got to date a ridiculously hot girl, and she...

Looks like Steve Carell has gone subtitle crazy of late on DVD night, as he's looking to produce and probably star in an English version of an Argentine film called Un novio para mi mujer (A Boyfriend For My Wife), having just released French remake Dinner for Schmucks.
The 2008 rom-com sounds a bit like Heartbreaker (which is being remade in English as we speak), only from the perspective of one of the customers, as the central figure - a wimpy husband - touts for a man to take his wife off his hands so he doesn't have to face the terror of trying to divorce her. Unfortunately for him, the man he finds is an unlikely lothario and needs a little convincing.
Carell will produce the movie under his company Carousel for Warner Bros. and Snow Dogs scriptsmiths Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin are already busying themselves on a first draft of the translation.

Steve Carrell is an incredibly talented comedic actor, but he's yet to follow up The 40 Year Old Virgin with another signature comedic role. Date Night, Get Smart, Evan Almighty and Dinner For Schmucks vary in level of quality, but they were all lackluster when compared to what Carrell is truly capable of.
Variety reports that Carrell has signed on to star in A Boyfriend for My Wife, an American adaptation of a 2008 Argentinean film. The good news is that Carrell will be also producing this film, which puts more creative control in his hands. The bad news is pretty much everything else about the project.

Having recently starred in the successful remake of the French film The Dinner Game, this time titled Dinner for Schmucks, Steve Carell is getting ready to star in another remake of a foreign comedy, this time the Argentinean Un novio para mi mujer, which will translate in English to A Boyfriend for My Wife. This news comes to us from Variety (via FirstShowing). The original was the most successful film made in Argentina in 2008, and the remake will be distributed by Warner Brothers. Carell will also be producing.
The plot has a man who believes the only way to end his poor marriage is to have a sex symbol get his wife’s attention, thus making her want to leave him. You can already see where the hijinks will ensue!
I actually say that somewhat jokingly because I like Carell. While the plot seems predictable just from that description (she...

Steve Carell may be departing The Office soon, but it seems he won’t have much trouble finding post-sitcom work. Today, Variety reported that the actor’s making plans to produce and star in A Boyfriend For My Wife, a Warner Bros. remake of a 2008 Argentine rom-com.
I never saw the original film, Un Novio Para Mi Mujer, probably because my Spanish muy sucks. And there are few details about Carell’s remake. But it’s not difficult to imagine the Office star pulling off the rom-com vehicle, since he’s come to establish himself as an affable, and mostly bankable,...

Phil Halprin and Mark Gibson are co-writing the project. The two writers previous credits include "The Wild", "The In Crow" and "Snow Dogs". They wouldn't exactly be my first choice but if that's what they want then so be it.You can still check out Carell alongside...

Warner Bros. is setting up a remake of the 2008 Argentine romantic comedy Un novio para mi mujer as a star vehicle for Steve Carrell. The comedian is producing, and WB hired Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin to write a script based on the Argentine film. A Boyfriend for My Wife would see Carell as "a timid husband [who] believes the only way out of his stifling marriage is to get his wife to fall in love with another man, so he enlists the help of a legendary yet unlikely Lothario." [Variety] After the break, Footloose and Vamps both make new hires. Andie MacDowell has joined the cast of Paramount's Footloose remake as as Vi, wife of the dance-hating minister now played by Dennis Quaid. (Dianne Wiest and John Lithgow played the roles in the 1984 original.) Julianne Hough plays their daughter, who gets danced and romanced by the new kid ...

Starring in Dinner for Schmucks must’ve given Steve Carell a taste for foreign food. Or foreign cinema, at least – he’s setting up a remake of Argentina’s 2008 rom-com A Boyfriend For My Wife.Variety reports that Warner Bros. has nabbed the rights to the film and Carell will develop it via his Carousel Productions company as a likely project for him to star in. Snow Dogs writers Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin have been hired to bash out the script. The original, titled Un novio para mi mujer, finds a wimpy husband unable to stand the thought of staying married to his wife. Once production on the seventh season of NBC's series "The Office" concludes, Steve Carell is going to be one busy man. Recently he was announced for a role in The Abstinence Teacher with Sandra Bullock and the DreamWorks comedy Raised by Wolfs and now he has another project on his slate. Variety reports Warner Bros. is developing A Boyfriend for My Wife, a remake of a 2008 romantic comedy from Argentina, and Carell is lined-up to lead the film. The story follows a timid husband who believes the only way of escaping marriage is to get his wife to fall in love with another man, so he enlists the help of a legendary Cassanova. Sadly, writers Mark Gibson and Phil Halprin (Snow Dogs, The In Crowd) don't inspire much hope for this. Apparently the original film, directed by Juan Taratuto was one of the biggest movies in Argentina ...

With his tenure on The Office set to expire after this season, it is more than likely that Steve Carell will start accepting projects by the barrel load. After all, who wants to be unemployed in this economy? The unfortunate side of picking up scripts like this, however, is that they aren't all going to be of the highest quality. Proof of this: he's now set to star in a remake written by the guys who made Snow Dogs. Variety reports that Carell will star in A Boyfriend for My Wife, an adaptation of the Argentinian film Un novio para mi mujer. Carell will play a husband who desperately wants to get out of his marriage, but doesn't have the nerve to tell her. Instead, he hires a "legendary yet unlikely Lothario" for her to fall in love with. As mentioned, the film will be written by Mark Gibson and...

In my opinion, Steve Carell is at his best when he's at his most absurd. It works well with Michael Scott, worked with Dinner For Schmucks and paid off in spades for Anchorman. Other films like Dan In Real Life or Date Night just never worked for me. So a Steve Carell romantic comedy doesn't exactly instill me with a lot of confidence. But Carell is set to produce and star in A Boyfriend For My Wife, a romantic comedy from the writers of Snow Dogs. In the film, Carell would star as a...
