The horror genre loves its tropes — sets of rules that dictate survival based on stereotypes around morality, class, race, gender and sexual orientation.
Much of the game in modern horror comes in examining and subverting those tropes, perhaps none so recent and notable as “Freaky,” Christopher Landon’s body-swap film from Universal Pictures that hits PVOD on Friday.
Dressed up as a gory comedy, “Freaky” offers liberating and honest portraits of young women and queer people, free from tokenism and broad generalizations to which the genre can often resort.
In “Freaky,” a struggling teen girl Millie (Kathryn Newton) and a menacing serial killer (Vince Vaughn) switch bodies thanks to a supernatural artifact. Now trapped in the killer’s flesh, Millie races against a clock to reverse the effects before she’s stuck forever, aided by best friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich).
Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Freaky.”

Two new cast members have joined the ensemble for Stargirl, the upcoming series on DC Universe, the digital subscription service that launched in October with Titans: Meg DeLacy as a character named Cindy Burman and Jake Austin Walker in a still-undisclosed role.
DeLacy most recently appeared as Grace Mullen in Freeform’s The Fosters. DeLacy’s character on Stargirl is described as a second-generation menace: “Cindy Burman is Blue Valley High’s most popular student… and its most feared. Secretly the daughter of Dragon King (played by Nelson Lee), a longtime enemy of the Justice Society of America, Cindy is determined to follow in her father’s footsteps.”
Walker is a Mississippi native best known as Jared Talbot on Rectify and his previous credits include I Love You Phillip Morris, The Chaperone and Burning Palms, as well as roles on Fear the Walking Dead, Lethal Weapon, and Bones. Walker...

It's simple math. "Paranormal Activity 4" cost $5 million to make + opened to $56 million worldwide this weekend = "Paranormal Activity 5" getting the go ahead. If you keep going to these, they're gonna keep making 'em.... Paramount Pictures has already gone and given the green light to "Paranormal Activity 5," with the standard Halloween release date pegged for 2013. Director and cast have yet to be announced, but considering these movies take about a week to shoot, and are edited over a weekend, those are minor details that can be filled in at the last minute. Speaking of which, remember that Latino spinoff of "Paranormal Activity" that was in the works? Well, it was teased after the credits of 'PA4' and it's also pressing forward with "Disturbia" co-writer Christopher Landon as the director. He previously helmed the ensemble thriller "Burning Palms" starring Zoe Saldana, Paz Vega,...

A leading lady may be chosen this weekend for the crime thriller “One Shot.” The Hollywood Reporter listed three actresses testing to star opposite to actor Tom Cruise. The three actresses are Hayley Atwell, Alexa Davalos and Rosamund Pike. Atwell recently appeared as the lead actress in the comic book film “Captain America: The First Avenger” this summer. She has appeared in several films including “The Duchess,” “Cassandra’s Dream” and television mini-series “The Pillars of the Earth.” Davalos was last seen in last year’s “Clash of the Titans.” Her filmography would also include “Defiance,” “The Mist” and “The Chronicles of Riddick.” And Pike was recently seen in several independent films such as “Made in Dagenham,” “Barney’s Version,” and “Burning Palms.” She was best known for her roles in films such as 2005’s “Pride & Prejudice,” “Die Another Day,” and “Doom.” Ironically, Pike will be seen playing Andromeda in...

For a girl who started her Hollywood career on a shitty MTV reality TV show, Jamie Chung sure has come a long way. How far has the little gal come? She’s currently co-starring in “The Hangover 2″, which should open huge this weekend. And before that, she was part of the girl ensemble in Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch”. Just when I thought there was no way they could do anything to make me interested in another Paranormal Activity sequel, they went and did pretty much the only thing that would actually make me excited to see it. Bloody-Disgusting is reporting confidently that Paramount is hiring up-and-coming filmmakers Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman, behind the controversial documentary Catfish last year (trailer), to direct the upcoming Paranormal Activity 3 sequel. I've been anxious to follow their careers and although there's rumors that doc will be spun off into a TV show, I'm much happier seeing them on this new project instead. In addition to filmmaking team of Joost and Schulman, Paranormal Activity 3 will have a screenplay by Christopher B. In my opinion, if you’re making a trailer, you want to make one just like this! Apple have just released the first trailer and poster for new movie, Burning Palms which features a rather impressive cast including Zoe Saldana, Jamie Chung, Rosamund Pike, Lake Bell, Nick Stahl, Paz Vega, Dylan McDermott, Shannen Doherty and is directed by Christopher B. This is a lesson is how to cut a trailer that makes you want to go and see a movie, especially when the subject matter for the movie looks so crazy!
Synopsis: Burning Palms is a subversive tale that interlaces five stories where no taboo is left unexplored. Framed as a graphic novel come to life, the film unfolds in five popular neighborhoods of Los Angeles as each character careens toward a dark and often comic fate.
Just leave them wanting more…. and it has… Enjoy!

Sci-fi fans aren't the only ones keen to find out about the follow-ups to Star Trek and Avatar.
Zoe Saldana, who played the young Uhura in Jj Abrams' big-screen Star Trek revamp and Sam Worthington's blue alien lover Neytiri in Cameron's Avatar, says she too is excited about the sequels and has been trying to prise all the details from the directors.
At the Hollywood premiere of her new film Burning Palms, the 32-year-old actress admitted: "You can expect the sequels to be amazing but we're going to have to wait."
The 32-year-old says she's been pestering James Cameron and Jj Abrams to reveal some details about the plots.
She said: "I email Jim and Jj to see if I can get a little bit of information and I don't know if it's a trend of mine or if I just psychologically gravitate towards these directors that are very secretive,...

Five stories that will mess you up for life. I don't know what this is and I really have no clue what is even going on, but it looks pretty frickin' wild, almost to the point where I'm actually kind of interested in seeing it. ShockTillYouDrop recently debuted a red band trailer for an indie anthology horror film called Burning Palms. I'd never heard of it before, but it has quite a cast for an indie: Zoe Saldana, Paz Vega, Jamie Chung, Rosamund Pike, Lake Bell, Shannen Doherty, Nick Stahl and even Dylan McDermott. But if you watch this - prepare to be freaked out. There's so much odd imagery! Nothing is what it seems... "Five tales that will mess you up for life." That's the tagline for Burning Palms, which opens in limited release on January 14. Written and directed by Christopher B. Landon (who wrote Disturbia, Paranormal Activity 2), the film follows five separate stories all across Los Angeles that delve into very taboo territory. It stars Zoe Saldana, Jamie Chung, Dylan McDermott, Paz Vega, Nick Stahl, Shannon Doherty, Rosamund Pike and more. Check out the trailer - which has a very Funny Games feel - after the jump. Thanks to Shock Till You Drop [1] for the below trailer. But first, read the plot description. It helps inform the trailer immensely. It's not every day I see a movie trailer that makes me think Wtf, but in a positive way. The new teaser trailer for the lovely Zoe Saldana's Burning Palms is magnificent and the movie looks pretty intriguing too.
The synopsis on IMDb describes it as a subversive tale that interlaces five stories set in Los Angeles, where no taboo is left unexplored as each character careens toward a dark and often comic fate. Just think of it as a dark comedy/satire, or as my favorite movie genre.

In news that doesn’t excite me in the slightest, it’s been reported that Christopher B. Landon, the screenwriter behind the risible Twilight-esque werewolf film Blood and Chocolate and the director of the forthcoming Burning Palms, has been hired by Paramount to pen the screenplay for Paranormal Activity 3, the third film in producer Oren Peli’s now annual Halloween horror franchise (remind you of Saw anyone? I hope to god they don’t stretch this one out to seven installments!)
Paranormal Activity 3 was originally announced mere seconds after the second installment grossed a ridiculous $170 million worldwide. There’s no cast or plot details as yet, but we do have a release date – the film will be released on October 21st.

Shock Til You Drop brings us the full-length red-band trailer for Burning Palms, from writer/director Christopher Landon (screenwriter of Paranormal Activity 2).
The tagline promises “5 Tales That Will F#%! You Up For Life,” and while Todd Solondz‘s Happiness kind of did that already (which this film echoes so strongly I wonder if Burning Palms is in fact a spiritual sequel), Landon’s flick looks like a disturbing jaunt through some kind of seedy underbelly of L.A.
Here’s the IMDb.com logline: A subversive tale that interlaces five stories set in Los Angeles, where no taboo is left unexplored as each character careens toward a dark and often comic fate.
Burning Palms stars Zoe Saldana, Dylan McDermott, Paz Vega, Nick Stahl and Rosamund Pike. It opens in very select theaters on January 14th, 2011.

Here’s another Zoe Saldana project that begun development since 2008, was seemingly completed early last year, and is now getting a theatrical release. Recall my post about a week ago, announcing the release of another project revival starring Saldana, titled, The Heart Specialist, which had been in limbo since 2006, and will be getting a theatrical release, debuting this Friday, the 14th. Read that post Here if you need to.
Anywho… this other film is titled Burning Palms, which, IMDb states, was actually made in 2008, and will be released theatrically courtesy of a company I’m not familiar with called New Films Cinema – the U.S. distribution arm of a worldwide full-service production and distribution company called New Films International. And, as chance would have it, Burning Palms will also debut in theaters this Friday, the 14th; so 2 different Zoe Saldana-starring projects will be competing for eyeballs. She certainly doesn’t carry either film; however,...

Christopher B. Landon has been hired by Paramount Pictures and producer Oren Peli to write the screenplay for Paranormal Activity 3, the third installment in the hugely successful low-budget horror franchise.
Landon was responsible for writing the werewolf romance film Blood and Chocolate, as well as contributing to the story of the 2007 thriller Disturbia. His directorial debut, Burning Palms, is set for release later this year.
Paranormal Activity 3 was announced late last year after the second installment grossed an estimated $170 million worldwide, from a mere $3 million budget.
Plot details for the third installment are not yet known, but expect more details to be revealed in the coming months.
Paranormal Activity 3 will be released on October 21.

I haven't a fucking clue what's going on in this trailer, but I kinda dig it.
Burning Palms... explores satires of Angeleno stereotypes, which are told through five interlacing stories. The five intertwining segments are based on popular stereotypes of West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks, Westwood and Holmby Hills. Each of the characters in the film confront taboos and an uncertain, often darkly humorous, fate.
From what I can tell, it's about distinct groups of people slowly going bugfuck crazy. I don't know if it ends in violence, tragedy, sadness or happiness, but it's got a dark madcap-romp feel to it that I'm finding strangely appealing. The cast is absolutely insane: Shannon Doherty, Dylan McDermott, Zoe Saldana, Lake Bell, Nick Stahl, Paz Vega, Adriana Barraza, Colleen Camp, Jamie Chung, Robert Hoffman, Peter Macdissi, Emily Meade, Anson Mount, Rosamund Pike, Austin Williams and Tom Wright. That's the mother of all mixed bags right there,...

The Paranormal Activity franchise is like a money tree for Paramount Pictures. The first film was made and acquired for next to nothing (thousands of dollars) and went on to gross over $187 million worldwide. The sequel was rushed into production with a larger budget (estimated $2.75 million), and released the following year, grossing $168 million worldwide. Both films were critically praised, and a lot of people even believe that the second film was better than the first. I would argue that it's more of the same (which isn't necessarily bad) but is a story that improves the enjoyment of the first film by contributing quite a bit to the mythology. It also leaves room for another installment, so a third film is a no brainer. Actually Paramount announced an October 21st release date for Paranormal Activity 3 days after the hit theaters [1]. Oren Peli, who directed the original film in the series and produced the second,...

Screenwriter Christopher Landon ( Disturbia , Paranormal Activity 2 ) spoke with Shock Till You Drop today about his directorial debut, the horror anthology Burning Palms and updated us on the status of his next script, Wake , a supernatural thriller based on the book series by Lisa McMann. She wanted to do something a little edgier and a little darker, so we're making this movie hopefully...It's about a teenage girl who has a rare form of narcalepsy. Christopher B. Landon and Michael R. Perry, who co-wrote Paranormal Activity 2 along with Tom Pabst, will be returning for the third installment of the popular horror franchise. Paramount Pictures has officially announced an October 21, 2011 release date. It would appear they are taking over the Saw franchise's spot as Halloween stalwarts. Oren Peli, who wrote, produced and directed the original will return as producer once again. No details have emerged for storylines though some loose ends were left out there from the second movie which makes sense to bring Landon and Perry back. Along with Paranormal Activity 2 Landon's writing credits include Disturbia and Blood and Chocolate. He also directed Burning Palms due out this Friday . Michael R.
