A version of this story about Laura Karpman and “Ms. Marvel” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama and Limited Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The lead character in “Ms. Marvel” is Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey who happens to be a huge fan of the Avengers and who develops special powers and becomes a superhero herself. Obviously, that gave composer Laura Karpman a lot to think about when she wrote her Emmy-nominated score (and theme music) for the series, which stars Iman Vellani as the title character.
“We wanted it to have a young, hip sound at times,” said Karpman, a Juilliard-trained composer whose other work includes the movies “Paris Can Wait” and “Resort to Love” and the TV series “Lovecraft Country” and “Why We Hate,” for which she won an Emmy in 2020. “We wanted it to have a recognizable kind of Marvel sound.

Rachael Leigh Cook has done all that: She’s been a teen breakout star in an iconic high school comedy (“She’s All That”), transitioned to cringe sponsored movies (“Spirit Halloween”), and made the leap to Hallmark Christmas queen (“Tis the Season to Be Merry”). Now, she’s deftly parlayed her everywoman likability into the sweet made-for-Netflix movie “A Tourist’s Guide for Love.”
Yes, “made-for-Netflix” is a category all on its own. While “The Irishman” is considered to be a Netflix Original, “made-for-Netflix” separates the mass-produced movies like the nearly-perfect “Falling for Christmas” and calming background noise of “Murder Mystery 2” from the real Oscar contenders. It’s a sliding scale of quality under the streaming titan’s content umbrella, and Cook’s latest film, “A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” feels like an adaptation of a sweet viral BookTok romance novel — in the best way possible.

By the time the title card drops in “A Tourist’s Guide To Love” (ten minutes in — the Netflix rom-com equivalent of the 40-minute wait in “Drive My Car”), we know exactly what we’re in for: The heartbroken heroine at the film’s center is going to experience a life-altering perspective shift via romance when embarking on a work trip. Acting as a travelogue for Vietnam with an adorable romantic comedy happening in the foreground, this sweetly spirited story isn’t terribly dissimilar from the streamer’s other offerings like “Love in the Villa” or “Resort to Love,” sating any viewers suffering from stunted wanderlust. Funny, poignant and simultaneously progressive and regressive, it may not add up to five-star escapism, but it’s a jovial jaunt worth taking.
High-powered Los Angeles travel agent Amanda Riley (Rachael Leigh Cook) is used to going above and beyond for her clientele, but not necessarily for herself.

Christina Milian continues her streak of rom-coms at Netflix with the upcoming holiday movie “Meet Me Next Christmas.”
The project marks the actor and musician’s third collaboration with Netflix following her popular destination romances, 2021’s “Resort to Love” — which spent four weeks on the streamer’s global top 10 film list — and 2019’s “Falling Inn Love.”
Milian will executive produce and star in “Meet Me Next Christmas,” playing Layla, who, in pursuit of a fairytale romance with the man of her dreams, must race through New York City to get her hands on the hottest ticket in town: the sold out Pentatonix Christmas Eve Concert.
The film also stars Devale Ellis, Kofi Siriboe and Kalen Allen, alongside the Grammy-winning a capella group Pentatonix.
Directed by Rusty Cundieff, “Meet Me Next Christmas” is written by Molly Haldeman and Camilla Rubis. Mark Roberts is producing the project, while Simon Lythgoe and Matt Code executive produce alongside Milian.

Sinqua Walls and Jack Harlow are ready to play ball in the first teaser for Hulu's "White Men Can't Jump" reboot - or at least they will be once Harlow stops meditating. On Feb. 5, the streamer debuted the first look at the upcoming film, which is set to put a modern spin on the classic 1992 film starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson.
In the teaser, Walls and Harlow test out their buddy comedy energy as they debate who the best director alive is. Harlow is team Paul Thomas Anderson, while Walls's character's vote goes to Spike Lee. "Spike Lee is our greatest living director," Walls says. This prompts Harlow to shoot back, "Spike Lee isn't even a good Knicks fan."
News that Walls was joining Harlow in the reboot of the classic 1992 sports comedy first broke in April 2022. The actor previously appeared in Netflix 2021 rom-com "Resort to Love" opposite Christina Milian.

Sinqua Walls is set to star in the remake of “White Men Can’t Jump” for 20th Century Studios, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Walls (“Nanny”) will star opposite Grammy-nominated musician Jack Harlow, who is set to make his acting debut in the remake.
Music video director Calmatic is set to direct the project, from a script by “Blackish” creator Kenya Barris and Doug Hall.
Released in 1992, “White Men Can’t Jump” starred Woody Harrelson as Billy Hoyle, a former college basketball star who wins bets against streetballers who think they can beat him because he’s white. His hustling strategy changes when he runs into Sidney (Wesley Snipes), another baller who tricks Billy out of a huge chunk of cash. After some prodding from their significant others, Sidney and Billy form a partnership that slowly grows into a friendship as they enter 2-on-2 tournaments for big bucks.

It's impossible to not fall in love with Netflix's newest original rom-com, Resort to Love, which tells the story of heartbroken musician Erica (Christina Milian), who takes a job as a wedding singer on a remote island in a last-ditch effort to revitalize her dying career. But then, surprise surprise, she finds out the wedding she's been assigned to sing at is none other than her ex-fiancé Jason's (Jay Pharoah). The antics that unfold thereafter, both hilarious and heartwarming, are made all the better by the stunning backdrop of the island of Mauritius, where the film is said to take place. But is that where the movie was really filmed?
It turns out Netflix's Resort to Love was, in fact, filmed in its entirety in the Republic of Mauritius, an East African island nation that's located in the Indian Ocean. According to The Cinemaholic, a bulk of the scenes...

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

Ashley Benson, Shiloh Fernandez, Logan Miller, Frank Whaley and Jay Pharoah are starring in “Private Property,” a remake of the 1960 noir film of the same title.
The movie recently wrapped production in Los Angeles and was written, produced, and directed by Chadd Harbold. The original film, written and directed by “Outer Limits” creator Leslie Stevens, was out of circulation for 30 years and considered lost, until it was restored and re-released by Cinelicious Pics in 2016 to critical acclaim.
In the remake, Benson stars as Kathryn, a struggling actress and unfulfilled housewife who becomes involved with her new gardener Ben, played by Fernandez. As he gives her the attention and sensitivity she craves, they start to fall for each other. But, in true noir fashion, Ben is not all that he seems.
Benson is best known for her work in “Spring Breakers,” “Her Smell” and the teen mystery-drama series “Pretty Little Liars.

“F9” (Universal/$19.99) is #1 on all four VOD charts we follow. It leads both on FandangoNow and Vudu, which list by rental revenue, and iTunes and Google Play, which rank by volume of renters. That suggests total dominance of home interest, but there’s a big caveat with “Jungle Cruise,” which opened #1 at the box office. It’s also available on Disney+ for $29.99 and the studio reported worldwide PVOD revenue of over $30 million for its first weekend. How much of that came from the U.S.is unclear, but the guess is most since VOD penetration is still lacking overseas.
Universal typically allows three weeks before opening the PVOD box office, but “F9” is the studio’s first title to wait five weeks. It grossed over $50 million on its opening weekend and under Universal’s agreement with theaters that meant a minimum 31 days for VOD.

A record impresario turns a swank LP listening party into a diatribe party. When he stomps on the latest record he planned to launch, Cree (Kayne Lee Harrison) also crushes the dreams of singer Erica Wilson (singer-songwriter Christina Milian stars as the thwarted recording artist). A year earlier, Erica’s boyfriend of four years did some crushing figuratively when he pulled up stakes before their wedding. It didn't take long for us to be completely captivated by leading man Sinqua Walls when Netflix dropped the trailer for Resort to Love earlier this month. Charming, charismatic, and into volunteering, the 36-year-old actor has been gracing our screens since 2007 with roles like Jamarcus Hall on Friday Night Lights, Daniel on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Sir Lancelot on Once Upon a Time, Vernon Boyd on Teen Wolf, and Shawn on Power. Before you catch him as the dreamy Caleb on Resort to Love on July 29, you can check out some of his hottest pictures ahead. Pro tip: these are best enjoyed imagining you're at a resort in Mauritius.

Netflix romcom queen Christina Milian is finally back with another movie, and Resort to Love (which debuts on July 29) looks like a total delight. Milian stars in the fun flick as Erica, an aspiring pop singer who lands a resident gig at a luxurious island resort in East Africa, not realizing that her ex-fiancé (Jay Pharoah) is planning his wedding there. And though she doesn't appear in the film, there's another big name attached to the film as well: Alicia Keys. Keys served as a producer for Resort to Love, and believe it or not, this isn't the first time she's produced a major film for Netflix.
She might be busy raising her two sons, managing her beauty brand, and releasing chart-topping music, but Keys has a budding career as a film producer as well. The singer extraordinaire's production company, Ak Worldwide, produced the dance comedy Work It starring Sabrina Carpenter.
