Not great, but sort of enjoyable...
stevesinger-200122 January 2023
I am a bit conflicted about "Alone at Night." It clearly has some problems, starting with the title itself. The movie was apparently originally titled "18 & over" and the movie itself still sports this title. The re-titling appears to be a last minute marketing change to try to convince people that the movie is different than it actually is, and it's never a good sign when a movie does that.

"Alone at Night" is the story of Vicky (Ashley Benson), a young woman who just broke up with her boyfriend and was kicked out of their New York home. She travels to the town she grew up in to stay at her cousin's house in an attempt to mentally recover, and she will have a week all alone at the house. She is also a cam-girl (her cam girl act involves putting on a purple wig), and so she figures she can spend the week camming and making a whole lot of money. And we spend the week with her as she cams, hangs around, and hears rumors of a killer nearby...

As I said, the movie has issues. She is supposed to be isolated, and yet there is a seemingly endless stream of men who just happen to stop by this distant house, and each one is more annoying than the previous. Pamela Anderson plays the local sheriff and sort of seems like she's supposed to be comic relief but never really fits. And there is a weird subplot about a strange "Pandemic Reality Show" starring Paris Hilton that we spend an inordinate amount of time watching (it's supposed to be Vicky's favorite show).

But for some reason I enjoyed it a bit more than I should have. I suspect some of that is due to Ashley Benson, who makes a very appealing protagonist. And I was able to figure out the killer from actual clues that were given, which is always nice.

Hard to really recommend it, but I sort of enjoyed it and there are worse ways to spend 90 minutes. I know that's faint praise, but still...

This is one of the wildest and most random casts you will ever see
kevin_robbins14 May 2023
Alone at Night (2022) is a movie currently available on Hulu. The storyline follows a young lady with an Only Fans type page who has her top client obsessed with her. She is quarantined and feels safe from her followers...until someone breaks into her house with a motive to either kill or kidnap her, or both. Can she stop her would be attacker and unmask whom would want to do this to her?

This movie is directed by Jimmy Giannopoulos (The Birthday Cake) and stars Ashley Benson (Springbreakers), Jake Weary (It Follows), Winnie Harlow (America's Next Top Model), Paris Hilton (House of Wax), Pamela Anderson (Barbed Wire) and Luis Guzmán (Wednesday).

This is one of the wildest and most random casts you will ever see in a movie. It's too bad the writing wasn't better so they could have been better utilized. The primary storyline had potential but the kill/attack scenes weren't that intense, gory or well done. The entire reality television subplot wasn't needed and really didn't add anything to the movie. The execution of the reality series was both funny and really bad at the same time. There are some scene with good use of lighting and camera angles and the cinematography was very clean, almost too clean for the genre. A little more grit could have been used throughout the movie.

Overall, this is an awful addition to the horror genre that I would score a 3/10 and recommend skipping.

They're exploiting us
nogodnomasters1 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
During the era of COVID, Vickey"s (Ashley Benson) boyfriend tosses her out for too much web camming for dollars at "18&Over." Her friend Stacey (Sky Ferreira) lets her crash at her secluded cabin so she can webcam until her heart's content. Her favorite program is "Trap House" where young hormone enraged adults must stay. They can't leave. Only rule. Hosted by Paris Hilton who plays herself with modest success. The local sheriff (Pamela Anderson) explains that there is a national serial killer, known as the Crowbar Killer who kills everyone around a person and then he kills the final girl. The film is not a who-dun-it but a who-will-do-it. The problem is there is only one good suspect who they lean on extremely heavy with clues. So when we know for sure, it's where's the twist? There is a cute twist at the end which you don't see coming. But the rest of the feature was simply a bad cabin-in-the-woods movie.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex. No nudity.

I am so sorry I hate to give a bad review but this is unwatchable
nickiharris-854228 February 2023
This is all over the place. It doesn't know if it's a horror movie, or a campy horror movie, or a drama, or a black comedy. You can be a campy horror movie, you just have to commit to it. I want to say I have respect for ALL filmmakers and congrats on getting this made. I know how much work goes into making a full feature film. The problem is, this doesn't all fit together and there's too many voices. If it wanted to be campy it should have stuck with that the whole way through, but it kept switching up the tone and that didn't work. It made it unwatchable and very difficult to get through. Again respect for getting it done, but it could have been SO much more if the tone were all even.

A disappointing slasher/thriller that has a few decent aspects
kannibalcorpsegrinder22 January 2024
After a tumultuous break-up, a woman trying to get over her ex-boyfriend at a remote house in the countryside where she can produce her adult livestream cam-shows by herself begins to feel that an obsessed fan has followed her to the house and begun killing those around her to be with her.

There's not much to this one but it does have a few likable factors. One of the main factors here is the general setup that provides plenty of potential while still allowing for some topical storylines. Being by herself while undergoing a quarantine session and engaging in a series of webcam chats with others that alerts a deranged stalker to her location and begins killing those around her cabin serves as a decent setup for what's going on here involving the gradual reveal of the figure lurking around the cabin as she tries to entertain her career and those who constantly appear around her. The various interactions that take place here while they go through the mind-games as who's trying to talk with her as the interactions here offer up the kind of intriguing setup for the few stalking scenes featured here providing some shocking ambushes with decent enough gore. These are what manage to make it enjoyable, although there are some big issues to be had here. The main drawback is the generally lackluster pace that never builds up much steam here since so much of what goes on is far removed from the kind of content the setup offers. With so much of the film not focused on the killer appearing but instead on either her watching a lame reality TV show that makes no sense or on strange men appearing at a supposedly remote and hard-to-access cabin in the woods, very little happens to remain interesting here. Since this material isn't interesting and features a ton of plot holes as well, this would be hard-pressed already before even taking into account the low-level tempo featured here. As this also leaves the killer so obvious it's not a surprise when it's revealed or their lame motivation because it never provides a chance to build up anyone else, there's a slew of big drawbacks here holding this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Violence, and Brief Nudity.

A good horror hidden in garbage
Preacher-69 October 2023
This is a frustrating film. The horror film part is well acted, tense, and has good twists. But for whatever reason, there is an annoying reality show element that feels like it was clumsily added later.

The reality show-within-a-movie is a bunch of horrible social media folks and doesn't connect to the real movie in any additive way. Paris Hilton almost makes it win some irony points, but it never lands.

Keep your finger on FFWD and you can still get a decent experience out of this.

I'd love to see a 70-ish minute cut. Call it "18 & Over, The Good Parts Edition". I think I'll do a fanedit and come back to it in a few years.

Actors are running out of money
daarness10 May 2023
Paris Hilton is desperate for money. Pamela Anderson? Also apparently on the verge of going bankrupt. Other poorly known "actors" just vying for money. This is bad, if we could unwatch this and charge these actors for watching this trash, this should be a new way to make money. Congratulations, this was so bad, the people watching this should make money instead.

Oh right, about the movie. This is an adult movie, but without any nudity at all, hardly any harsh language. Virtually no human blood, no gore. So this is more like a PG-13 movie, but maybe the one thing that makes it over that is an additional "F" word.

Don't watch this. But you will, because I'm wrong, but then you'll finish and then I'll be right. :) Life baby!

Basically a sexual lifetime movie
aprilsfriendorin12 August 2023
This is a thriller about a woman who webcams isolating at a house for quarantine. So yes, it's a covid movie. While staying there, suspicious things start to happen...

If you're thinking the premise sounds intriguing but unoriginal you're right. Except the intrigue turns into boredom really quickly.

The plot is very slow and very predictable. There's a lot of random sexual content thrown in (which isn't unexpected given the premise), but many of the scenes are drawn out and necessary. Some of the cast is also terrible- it features actual influencers (gross) and Pamela Anderson's acting is some of the worst I've ever seen.

The only good part of this movie was Paris Hilton. She was actually kind of funny. Anyway, you'd be better off with a lifetime movie.

I'm all for campy but...
ccvrdryzys17 August 2023
..this was just straight up bad. The goofy comedic relief objectively fails at the funny. The softcore setups are forced as hell. The overall acting was lacking aside from a few key moments that genuinely impressed me. Ashley Benson was a good lead except for the cringe flirty/romantic moments but I'm aware that's more than likely not her decision. The whole "reality tv" house had virtually no point being in the story. This was just a kinda cheap way to plug those influencers names. There was no real plot twist seeming you're already about 99.99999% sure who the real "culprit" is. (Spoiler: It's who you think it is) All in all aside from those very few good parts, the movie is a total skip you won't regret.

Male audience might like it.
pedja-the31 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I know some celebrities like Paris Hilton and Pamela Anderson have a lot of admirers worldwide, so having them aboard on the same movie is gonna cause a lot of attention and intrigue. However their parts here are only superficial and have no connection, like most part of this movie. The movie itself was all over the place and felt like director was coming up with ideas along the way, instead of having the whole project done and know what he was after from the beginning. Ashley Benson showing off her "assets" in front of the Webcam, although pleasing to the men's eye isn't enough reason to recommend this movie.

What did you expect?
poojones-181466 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is a decent film but maybe slightly too ambitious. Typical story of a young woman alone in a cabin, in a desolate location. Trouble immediately ensues with lack of Internet and someone sabotaging the power box. Strangely it is located outside of the home. Did I mention that she is an OnlyFans star? It certainly has great camp value and comedic horror that is easy on the gore. Great to see Pamela Anderson but the character was limited and her performance was odd. The Paris Hilton reality bit was fun. Somewhat easy to figure out plot. Climax was predictable but ok. The true ending is a non-plus. Overall enjoyable.

Sorry to the haters but this slaps
chameloveshorror12 May 2023
IS IT CAMPY AND DUMB? Yes. That's the beauty of it. People don't appreciate dumb movies enough. Too many movies have to be "good" or "well-made". Those movies are fine, but bad movies are too. Treat yourself to a nice garbage movie and watch this masterpiece.

But seriously, I think that the people in the reviews saying "Pamela Anderson must be hurting for money" are missing the point. This movie is campy and fun to watch. It's silly and no, it won't win any awards. But it's a decent plot with good acting. Highly recommend.

I gave it a 6 because I mean.... It's still not a perfectly good movie....

Unwatchable rubbish 0/10
andras-ocskay16 February 2023
It is painful to watch this.

Even the starting scene make no sense.

And following by bad acting, rubbish editor work, bad director and nonsens wrriter.

It is just unwatchable rubbish.

The scenes has the same acting and direction level as a porn film, but without the adult content.

I could not even watch till the end, it is just terrible time waster.

I can not even say that much word to fill the spance here, but I must make up to 600 required characters to be able to send this review.

It is unrateable, 0/10 Pointless, meaningless, lack of acting, lack of dierctor, lack of writers.

They should never do films.

Bad but random enough to keep you watching
mrmanbox26 May 2023
Movie stunk, not sure what the aim was. Just wanted to show how many dudes a girl can sleep with. No clue why the guy would go through so much for a girl that sells her body online and would sleep with anyone anyways.. he turned her down at one point and was still obsessed? And do they think men even want cam girls? Random reality tv thing added because they knew the movie stunk on itsown likely. Pretty garbage movie in all aspects but acting. The characters played their parts well. Sadly they were given terribly written characters. This is a rare case the actors were good enough to keep you into it but the writing being so terrible it hurts everything.

A Shockingly Mediocre Thrill Ride with Electrifying Blunders!
P3n-E-W1s314 November 2023
Story: 0.75/2 - Direction & Pace: 1.00 & 1.00/4 - Performances 1.25/2 - Entertainment 1.25/2

Total - 5.25/10

Ah, 'Alone at Night,' the film that promised a thrilling journey into the world of intelligent slasher cinema but left me questioning the characters and wondering if they penned the script during a blackout.

To begin with, let's address the elephant in the room - the script. I haven't seen a narrative this cringe-worthy since accidentally stumbling upon a high school play. The damsel in distress complaining about the lack of internet while being online every day is a plot twist even M. Night Shyamalan wouldn't dare attempt. It's as if the writers attended a crash course in irony and failed spectacularly.

Now, let's talk about the electrocution scene, a masterpiece in unintentional comedy. I haven't laughed that hard since my grandma tried to use a touchscreen phone for the first time. The prolonged shock-fest should've been intense, terrifying, and exciting but resembled a botched attempt at electrifying the audience with awkward chuckles.

The direction had its shining moments, like a diamond in the rough, but it desperately needed smoothing out. I appreciated the lighting and the above mediocre composition, yet it suffered from a single pace.

As for the performers, they almost saved the day. Alas, overacting and weak character construction proved to be their kryptonite. The bad guy, in particular, felt like a rejected Bond villain auditioning for a community theatre production. I half-expected him to break into a monologue about world domination while sipping a martini.

'Alone at Night' is a modern sexploitation film that tries to rise above mediocrity and, in some aspects, succeeds. The cinematography is commendable, and the presentation is solid, like a B-list actor giving their all in a C-list movie. It's a one-time watch, an experience that will make you raise an eyebrow and ponder the choices that steered you to this cinematic crossroads. Return for a second viewing? I'd sooner elect a turkey for the presidency.

Warning: Spoilers
(pitiful screenplay) This film is so demented that it also exceeds any other film is all totally ridiculous I understand the actors who go because they are paid but what the script writes is not ashamed as well as a little, what makes me angry is not so much the story, but As it is written, we have a cam girl that goes to a lost place because it was left by the boy and does not know where to stay and wants a little tranquility, but the place is so remote that it is surrounded by beautiful guys who take photos models For D&G, WiFi breaks and those who arrive a beautiful boy photo model, the neighbor who has just been left by the boy and a beautiful boy always a model photos, the truck driver who takes to bed is another beautiful guy and all guys who do He wanted to bring to bed just known, only the ugly pizza chef died immediately !! I stop because I got tired of writing I am disgusted, my dear I hope you will not write any other script like this !!

Fun
william-aaron-kelly30 June 2023
I'm not sure what everyone else's problem is but this movie is fun. It's supposed to be campy and it succeeds at that. It follows a woman loving a true nightmare of a bad breakup in the pandemic and now staying alone for a week out in the woods. It brings a lot of themes from the pandemic up, such as quarantine, the rise of online sex work, loneliness and mental health. There's a few loops and bounds you have to go through to figure out who the killer is, but I will say they do prove who it is rather quickly. Aesthetically, it's shot well through hues of purple, blues and reds. I would say this movie is like "Cam" and "Hush" blended in one. Not necessarily a home invasion movie, but heading down that way. At first, I was worried this was going to be another dead beaten theme of a social media horror movie, but it really wasn't, thank the high heavens. So, go into it with an open mind and enjoy this modern camp thriller.

Not sure why you gotta hate so much.
cscott23319 May 2023
I mean come on! As far as thrillers go this wasn't that bad! It was all very relevant to the time I'm which it was made. From the webcam girls to Covid. And the cast, I mean come on it was sooooo random but so GOOD!!! From some really uhh names, to some stellar B lister cameos. The plot was good, the music was decent and some of the dialogue was cheesy, in a way that makes it amazing haha! And then we have the ending...It. Was. Glorious hahaha!! I am so not mad at the time I spent watching it. I loved seeing Pamela Anderson and Paris Hilton. Then Jake Weary shows up. Like I said before. I don't understand the hate. It claims to be nothing more than it is. A cheesy thriller with a great cast.

Very underrated
qzen9-699-2161284 March 2024
Captivating movies with a beautiful deep message that is getting a lot of hate and unfair criticism for no reason, It's unclear if reviewers are misunderstanding it or being offended by it, the movie is certainly well written and presented and even thought it is shown in a quite unorthodox way its message is noble, it's encouraging young people especially girls to aim for something rea instead of shallow connections and showing the risks associated with that even if it obviously was exaggerated but it's art, Unexpectedly the movies was satisfying especially toward the ending, totally recommend it!

Everybody's a critic
jwatters-4931020 July 2023
This movie is fine. Not the greatest movie I've ever seen, but certainly not the worst. I actually thought it was pretty enjoyable. Sort of campy at times, not necessarily edge-of-your-seat thrills. Who cares? It was fine for what it was, and it was exactly what it was supposed to be - a fun way to kill a few hours.

Unwatchable? I watched it. Does everything make sense? Honestly, no. There's a throughline of a reality show that everyone in this world is apparently enthralled by. I could have done without it, but it does add another layer to the entire thing.

Watch it. Don't take it too seriously. Have fun.

Calm down.
