Colleen Wheeler: Florence Abbott

Quotes

  • Florence Abbott : This one's my favorite. It was rare to catch Elizabeth in front of the lens, so enchanted with the world around her, she often forgot herself.

Lena Luthor : Have you shown this to Peggy? I mean, it could bring her some peace. She deserves that much.

Florence Abbott : By the time I worked up the courage, she wouldn't hear it.

Lena Luthor : But your... your stone could show her the truth. Got me to question my cynicism. I'm sure it can reach anyone.

Florence Abbott : For Peggy, Elizabeth and I will always be the reason her parents are dead. Magic can do a great deal of good, but it cannot reach everyone. For you, it's different. You have your mother's gift.

Lena Luthor : No, that's absurd. Look, I said I questioned my cynicism. I didn't say I dropped it. Florence, I believe what you showed me, but I also believe that there's a scientific explanation for it. I just need to find it.

Florence Abbott : The laws of witchcraft work on a different plane than the laws of science. Like two parallel lines, you'll never find a point where they intersect. You would not have been able to use the stone if you didn't have the spark, Lena. You have the gift, should you choose to embrace it.

  • Florence Abbott : Who are you?

Lena Luthor : I mean you no harm.

Florence Abbott : My God! You look just like...

Lena Luthor : Elizabeth Walsh. I'm her daughter. I came here to...

Florence Abbott : I know why you're here. I've been waitin' for this day a long time.

  • Florence Abbott : Your mother visits me in my dreams, you know. She's told me all about you. Said you'd show up here one day looking for answers. Warned me to be precise. She says you're a scientist.

Lena Luthor : Why, it doesn't take a ghost for you to know that. A simple Google search would suffice.

Florence Abbott : Oh, I don't trust computers. I get my information from the source. Sit.

    [Lena sits down]

Florence Abbott : I need a drop of your blood.

Lena Luthor : [scoffing]  Look, it's like you said, I'm a scientist and I don't want to waste your time, but I don't believe in magic.

Florence Abbott : Let the truth persuade you.

[as Lena pricks her finger, Florence squeezes a droplet of blood into her basin; working her magic, images from the past appear]

Florence Abbott : I come from a long line of witches. Most people shunned me for it. But your mother and Margaret, they had the gift, too. They sought me out. Witchcraft requires a deep knowledge of the earth. Every leaf, seed, twig is as alive and unique as you or me. And learning the language of nature takes patience, rigor. And your mom committed herself to the work, like you with your science. Now, drawing power from nature, that part can't be taught. It takes a spark, and your mother's spark was powerful. We three worked quietly, content, until Margaret started showin' up with bruises on her face, a broken arm. Her husband Tommy was well-liked. No one believed he beat his wife. So... we took matters into our own hands. The truth is, we only meant to scare, but the magic got away from us. There's no denying that fire was unnatural. The town turned on us, threatened to stone us. They left Margaret to her shame. With my family history, they hunted me, wanted me dead. I had to hide.

Lena Luthor : And my mother?

Florence Abbott : She escaped to the States. And Lizzie called me once, said she'd taken up with Lionel Luthor. Said she was living under his control because she no longer trusted herself. Lena... your mother wants you to know she was only trying to protect Margaret. Her heart was pure. She didn't realize her own power.

Lena Luthor : Thank you for telling me this.

Florence Abbott : Believe me when I tell you, your mother sees you. And she's very proud of the woman you are.
