It’s no surprise that filmmaker David Lynch’s fanbase has, for four decades, continually renewed itself among each new generation of cineastes. Something about the strange alchemy of the multidisciplinary Eagle Scout’s sensuous images, earnest perspective and intuitive storytelling perspective is intoxicating, buoyed onscreen by the talents of great creative collaborators like Mary Sweeney, Alan Splet and Angelo Badalamenti.
The films themselves are often dark but always honest, their perversions expressive and earned rather than bluntly hammered. As we follow the cosmic tendrils of Lynch’s brain backwards toward their origin, it’s only natural to ask: why does this guy see the world the way he sees it?
One answer may lay in Victor Fleming 1939 MGM classic, whose enchantments reach even further back, to its position as an early television staple for impressional baby boomers developing their imaginations and material predilections in the glow of the family’s suburban RCA console.

(That's Dan O'Bannon peeping around the corner...) Over the past decade, writer-director Alexandre O. Philippe has made a name for himself as a documentary maker, picking all sorts of interesting subjects like Paul the Psychic Octopus, or Star Wars fandom turned sour in The People vs. George Lucas. His previous film 78/52 was an excellent and meticulous (if at times fan-boyish) look at the (in)famous shower scene from Psycho. So when news arrived that for his next film, Alexandre was going to aim his focus on another classic scene - the "chestburster" from Alien - I was laughing with glee. What's not to love about That idea? Well, the end result has arrived and it's called Memory - The Origins Of Alien. And while the...

"They were all thinking about this as more than a science fiction adventure in the future." Screen Media Films has debuted an official trailer for the movemaking documentary Memory: The Origins of Alien, a clever, fascinating behind-the-scenes documentary looking back at this seminal sci-fi horror classic (first released in 1979). This doc premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it's finally opening (in theaters + VOD) in October. From Swiss doc director Alexandre O. Philippe, this film tells the untold origin story behind Ridley Scott's Alien - rooted in Greek and Egyptian mythologies, underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon, and the dark visions of Dan O'Bannon and H.R. Giger. A "contemplation" on the symbiotic collaborative process of movie-making, the power of myth, and our collective unconscious. This is not your usual doc, it explores the creation of this sci-fi film in a remarkable and captivating way ...

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

The companies release the film in theaters this summer, timed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Alien‘s theatrical release.

Psycho’s shower scene is one of the most iconic scenes ever filmed. But does just one 45 second scene warrant an entire documentary?
Seventy-eight. Fifty-two. Just numbers, sure, but also the precise alchemical formula for creating the most iconic scene in cinematic history. In around 45 seconds, the legendary auteur Alfred Hitchcock used seventy-eight setups and fifty-two cuts to craft Psycho’s shower scene, an unforgettable sequence that transcended the confines of the screen into immortality. Not only are film students destined to pore over it for generations to come, trying to unlock its many secrets, but it has also shaped key areas of our shared cultural consciousness. How? As well as restyling the depiction of violence on screen for future filmmakers to come, the shower scene reimagined the representation of violence onscreen towards women, with Karyn Kusama, director of several thrillers herself, calling it the "first modern expression of the...

"Psycho you felt could happen to you..." IFC Midnight has unveiled the first official trailer for a very unique filmmaking documentary titled 78/52, analyzing and examining the seminal shower scene from Hitchcock's Psycho. This premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and played at numerous other fests all year, finally opening in theaters this October. From The People vs. George Lucas director Alexandre O. Phillippe, 78/52 is an "unprecedented look at the iconic shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), the 'man behind the curtain', and the screen murder that profoundly changed the course of world cinema." This had good buzz coming out of Sundance, even though the first comparisons that came up referenced the Kubrick doc Room 237 (which some people hate). I dig the poster art for this as well (see below), and the film looks like it's a fascinating breakdown of one of the most iconic moments in cinema history.

The Sundance Film Festival is officially over and the awards have already been handed out, both the official ones and our own Unconventional Awards, and out of the roughly thirty films I saw during my time in Park City, Utah, I’ve put together a list of the ten very best movies I had a chance to see. Many of them will be coming to theaters across the country later in the year, and a few of them may even be in the Oscar conversation a year from now.
10. The Big Sick
Silicon Valley’s Kumail Nanjiani made his triumphant debut as a leading man with this movie produced by Judd Apatow, directed by Michael Showalter (Hello, My Name is Doris) and co-written with wife Emily V. Gordon. Based on their own experiences in courting and how Emily (played by Zoe Kazan) being put into a medically-induced coma affected it,...

The shower murder in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” sits alongside the opening of “Citizen Kane” and the climax of “2001: A Space Odyssey” as one of the most famous movie scenes in history, but the reasons are both obvious and elusive. Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 proto-slasher film jarred audiences with the sudden death of leading lady Janet Leigh midway through, in a grisly, taboo-shattering bout of nudity and knifing at the ends of a shadowy, cross-dressing Norman Bates. As a complex narrative strategy and a subversive stunt, it kickstarted decades of conversations, so it’s surprising it took so long for someone to make a movie about it.

Documentarian Alexandre O. Philippe has tackled a variety of topics over his career, including zombies (Doc of the Dead) and the fickleness of Star Wars fans (The People vs. George Lucas), but it’s his latest project, 78/52, which thoughtfully examines the shower scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, that might be his most ambitious project to date. The documentary took Philippe three years to complete, and features a cavalcade of fantastic interviews with numerous notable folks, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Bogdanovich, Bret Easton Ellis, Danny Elfman, Mick Garris, Karyn Kusama, Oz Perkins, Richard Stanley, Elijah Wood, and many more.

In 2010, filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe released The People vs. George Lucas, a documentary where, through the lens of fan and critical reaction, the artistic legacy of Lucas and his Star Wars series is "put on trial" so to speak. Its purpose, as the film's official website spells it out, is to determine "who truly owns that galaxy far, far away . the man who created it, or the fans who worship it?" Apparently, the case hasn't been settled in Philippe's eyes, as he's preparing to go back into battle with The People vs. George Lucas II. The film's official site promises to look at the series after the acquisition of Lucasfilm by The Walt Disney Company, as well as George Lucas' relationship with his fans and pop culture at large. Or at least, it's planning to speculate heavily on what Star Wars: Episode VII will mean for the franchise before...

Now that George Lucas has sold the rights to Lucasfilm and his Star Wars franchise to Disney, director Alexandre O. Philippe is making a sequel to his 2010 documentary The People Vs. George Lucas. The first film examined the relationship between fans and the legendary Star Wars creator after the the prequels were released and the majority of his fans were pissed off. The sequel basically asks the question, "What does the future of Star Wars look like without George Lucas?"
The producers of the project just announced the production of The People vs. George Lucas Episode II, released a poster, and set the release date for December 2015. That's the same month and year that Star Wars Episode VII comes out. Here's the official announcement with the synopsis:
We are proud to announce The People vs George Lucas – Episode II is now officially in production, and slated for a December 2015 worldwide release.

If you were already feeling over-saturated by all the Star Wars: Episode VII talk, then brace yourselves: it’s about to get even uglier. A long, long time ago, when The Walking Dead was just a phrase and zombie movies only had a cult following, George A. Romero came along and created one of the most iconic horror movies in history – The Night Of The Living Dead. Many people consider this title to be where the zombie genre was created, marching forward in time towards becoming an unstoppable pop culture juggernaut, but that’s not Entirely true. Yes, The Night Of The Living Dead really put zombies on the map, but variations of Romero’s creatures existed for years beforehand – something you’ll learn by watching a documentary called Doc Of The Dead.
Filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe (The People Vs. George Lucas) has been watching zombies claw their way into every aspect of our daily lives, and he found it necessary to properly educate audiences on how zombies became the iconic figures that they now stand as.

Tom Savini is a great guy to talk zombies with. The horror legend has worked as an actor and director (who remade "Night of the Living Dead" in 1990), but is best known for his special effects and makeup work on films like George A. Romero's seminal "Dawn of the Dead" and "Day of the Dead." Savini's one of the interviewees in "Doc of the Dead," a new documentary from "The People vs. George Lucas" director Alexandre O. Philippe that explores the evolution of the zombie on screen, from its early days in features like the Haiti-set "White Zombie" through Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" through to the AMC juggernaut that is "The Walking Dead." The film explores the appeal of the animated undead by way of interviews with folks like Savini and Romero as well as actors Bruce Campbell and Simon Pegg and writers Max Brooks and Robert Kirkman.

Zombies are definitely having a cultural moment. In fact, their blood-smeared claws are all over every aspect of the post-apocalyptic pop culture terror-dome, from the phenomenally successful cable series "The Walking Dead" to Brad Pitt's against-all-odds box office smash "World War Z," to things like Max Brooks' best-selling "Zombie Survival Guide" (which begat the novel that "World War Z" was loosely based on). In short: the undead are everywhere. So it's unsurprising that a documentarian like Alexandre O. Philippe, who charted the backlash against the guardian of The Force in the "The People vs. George Lucas," would take aim at the slow, shambling corpses in "Doc of the Dead." Somewhat more surprising is the fact that it doesn’t feel like a complete rehash of a subject that's been endlessly covered, proving that there's still some life left in the reanimated corpse of the zombie documentary."Doc of...

Welcome to 2014 – where twerking exists, Pharrell looks like Smokey The Bear, and zombies have become a major staple in everyday societal culture. Yes, brain-munching, decaying, vile, mindless zombies have risen in popularity and weaseled their way into every facet of modern life. There are zombie walks where cosplayers sport their most grotesque and creative festering wounds, overtaking major city streets as a pack of undead supporters, zombie 5K races (which yours truly Almost survived) – hell, the most popular show on TV is a drama about zombies (depending who you ask). So what’s the big deal with zombies all of a sudden? That’s exactly the question that director Alexandre O. Philippe (The People Vs. George Lucas) attempts to answer with his newest horror themed documentary, Doc Of The Dead.

Have you ever officiated at a zombie wedding? Of course you haven’t. But do you know who has? Bruce Campbell! The Evil Dead star and all-round horror icon recalls his lead role at some deliberately nightmarish nuptials in a new film, Doc of the Dead. Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas), the documentary tracks the rise of the zombie phenomenon and, in addition to Campbell, features contributions from Shaun of the Dead actor-writer Simon Pegg, Walking Dead makeup overlord Greg Nicotero, and George A. Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

The 2014 SXSW "Film Features Program" includes 115 titles, and along with the previously announced zombie culture documentary Doc of the Dead, there's a lot for the horror crowd...
...including special screenings of the original Godzilla and Texas Chain Saw Massacre, early looks at upcoming TV shows "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" and "Penny Dreadful," the U.S. premiere of Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Dance of Reality, and new films from the Spierig brothers, Nacho Vigalondo, and Jim Jarmusch.
The genre-heavy "Midnighter" lineup will be announced next week along with the list of short films, but in the meantime here are the horror highlights (or what we assume will be of interest given their descriptions) to be on the lookout for during the fest.
Note that new for 2014, they've introduced the "Episodic" category, created to highlight innovative new work hitting the small screen.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

If you held a very large weapon to our head and asked us what our favorite film festival was, we'd probably have to tinkle in our pants. And then we'd answer: the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Warmer than Sundance and weirder than Cannes, it exemplifies Austin's easygoing vibe and serious commitment to all sorts of cinema, from genre movies to documentary features and everything in between. It's just the best. And from the looks of the early announcements, this year's festival is going to be as wonderful as ever.
The festival has announced that Jon Favreau's long-awaited return to independent cinema, "Chef," will open the festival on March 7. The movie also stars Favreau as a chef who quits his job at a prominent La eatery and moves to Miami to start up a food truck. In terms of movies that have opened South by Southwest,...

There are not too many people in the movie industry who are as equally loved and derided as George Lucas. As an up-and-coming filmmaker, George Lucas was part of the American New Wave (aka “New Hollywood”) that burst out during the late 1960s and 70s, which also included contemporaries such as Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. While attending the University of Southern California (USC), George Lucas became fascinated with the form of cinema itself and worked on numerous short films that were extremely experimental. Many of these films lacked story or character and instead focused on visuals and creating pure emotions with the form. It was a far cry from the endless merchandising of movie memorabilia that he is partially known for today.
After graduating from USC, he made two excellent films: Thx 1138 (a futuristic science fiction movie) and American Graffiti (a coming-of-age story set in...
