Following introspective shorts “Grietas” and “Solos,” Canarian director Alberto Gross Molo recalls his turbulent childhood in his upcoming debut feature “Catorce de Marzo,” a searing look at divorce through the lens of children placed unjustly in the middle.
Selected to participate at Madrid’s 5th Ecam Incubator, the narrative dives into the delicate minds of two siblings forced to determine their fate by choosing between parents, a fraught decision that could further divide their family.
Written by Gross alongside Tomàs Bayo Encontra, Laura Egidos Plaja and Albert Aynés Clapés of Contraria Media and David Aymerich of Ayhe Productions produce the project.
In 2021, “Catorce de Marzo” participated in My First Script at the Zagreb Film Festival and Ekran+, the team attending the Faberllull residency in 2022. It was also a finalist for last year’s Julio Alejandro Sgae Screenplay Award.
Egidos, co-founder of Contraria, spoke with Variety about the project’s allure and forward trajectory.

Denmark’s “Norwegian Offspring,” by Marlene Emilie Lyngstad, from Den Danske Filmskole, was chosen as the winner of the 26th edition of La Cinef.
In the story, a mother passes away and her estranged son – obsessed with theories about the repression of male sexuality in modern society – starts longing for offspring of his own.
“The jury was captivated by this bold filmmaker,” said Ildikó Enyedi, who presided over the jury.
“It made us laugh and cringe at the same time.”
Earlier, the Hungarian director – behind “On Body and Soul” and, most recently, “The Story of My Wife,” which was at Cannes – addressed the audience: “You made it. To be in this room, it’s a lot and we all know it. We really felt for you [during our discussions]. We tried to go for the raw talent, for the promise. I just hope we did a good job, because we wanted to.”

There's too much TV to choose from these days, but when it comes to deciding what to watch, some unspoken rules of TV are just plain obvious. For example: If there's a show with Morgan Freeman in it, you watch the show with Morgan Freeman in it. According to Variety, it might be time to employ that no-brainer rule, as Freeman is apparently finalizing negotiations to star in a TV spin-off of the 2014 film "Lucy."
You may remember "Lucy" as the movie in which Scarlett Johansson plays a woman who unlocks her full brain's potential after accidentally absorbing a powerful drug. This turns her into a super smart, psychokinetic superhero-type who is also prone to almost disintegrating every now and again. The high-concept film came courtesy of "Léon: The Professional" and "The Fifth Element" filmmaker Luc Besson, and earned an impressive 463 million at the worldwide box office against a reported 40 million budget.

Amazon Studios is shaking up the leadership of its TV programming operations under Head of Television Vernon Sanders, I have learned. Marc Resteghini is stepping down as US/Global Head of Development, sources said. He is negotiating a producing deal with Amazon Studios. Nick Pepper, Head of Studio Creative Content, and Laura Lancaster, Head of Series, are expected to divvy up Resteghini’s responsibilities and co-run development and production of TV content, reporting to Sanders. MGM TV’s operations remain separate and do not factor into the current executive changes.
A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Resteghini, Pepper and Lancaster were named to their most recent roles in early 2021 as part of an Amazon Studios TV restructuring that created the layer of three top programming positions reporting to then-Amazon Studios co-heads of TV Sanders and Albert Cheng (who also was COO).

Constance Wu is back.
The actress returned July 14 to Twitter after a three-year absence to reveal that she attempted suicide following an online backlash to “careless tweets” she wrote lamenting the renewal of her ABC sitcom, Fresh Off the Boat. Wu, coming off a high-profile run with Hustlers and Crazy Rich Asians, retreated from the public eye. After a brief appearance in Amazon’s Solos, she’s emerged as one of the stars of the streamer’s new series The Terminal List.
At that show’s premiere, she told THR that the transition back to work was not an easy one — especially as a new mother. “My first day on set was hard,” said Wu, who welcomed a daughter with musician Ryan Kattner in August 2020. “I missed my baby. Hollywood is officially back to normal with a ton of limited release qualifying runs in New York and Los Angeles this month before expansions arrive in 2022. It’s easy to forget stuff like West Side Story (December 10) and The King’s Man (December 22) are coming too as a result since we’re all more interested in discovering whether the new A24 is bowing locally.
That means a lot of posters to choose from and yet I probably could have whittled the below to six and been okay with what got cut. So many are banking on name recognition getting them across the finish line alone and they probably aren’t wrong. For those still undecided, however, a memorable one-sheet could be just what the doctor ordered to subconsciously worm your title into the forefront of another mind.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched the first three episodes of “Invasion,” Apple Plus’ new drama that premiered Friday, Oct. 22.
Despite its ominous title, “Invasion” makes a slow burn out of revealing its basic premise. You’d know more about the new drama by reading its logline — “the series follows an alien invasion” — than by watching its first three episodes, which dropped Oct. 22 on Apple TV Plus. Though there’s something — or some thing? — creeps its way around the world by leveling buildings, smashing space stations, and giving kids nosebleeds, “Invasion” keeps its cards close to the chest. Rather than so much as utter the word “alien” in these initial episodes, “Invasion” focuses on the global ripple effects of increasing panic — which might be fine, if it also did a decent job developing its many characters along the way.
From co-creators Simon Kinberg (“The Martian”) and...

Amazon saw second-quarter net sales of $113 billion, up 27% but below expectations, dinging the shares, which fell more than 7% in late trading.
Consumers still shopped a lot on Amazon but growth was tempered as the world reopened — compared with the year-ago quarter when the global pandemic was at its height.
Net profit came in at a strong $7.8 billion, or $15.12 a share — up from $5.2 billion or $10.30.
Subscriptions services, which includes annual and monthly fees associated with Amazon Prime memberships, as well as digital video, audiobook, digital music, e-book, and other non-aws subscription services, grew revenue by 32% to $7.9 billion. Prime, which offers members unlimited fast delivery and access to Amazon Prime streaming, is now available in 22 countries with the latest addition of Portugal. CFO Brian Olsavsky said on a call with analysts that video “is good for the Prime program” and Amazon is investing in rolling out the Prime-member benefit across international markets.

Chilean horror maestro Jorge Olguin and his producers will be at Cannes’ Marché du Film and Producers Network to seek international co-producers and distributors for his upcoming sci-fi horror film “The Shape of Fear” (“La Forma del Miedo”), described as a cross between “The Andromeda Strain” and “The Thing.”
Its teaser trailer, unveiled exclusively in Variety, opens with a panning shot of Chile’s stunning Atacama Desert as a mysterious white light streaks across the sky to the tune of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, which has never sounded more sinister. We close in on a military hospital as a bloodied woman writhing in pain is rushed in on a stretcher. A lab scientist, played by Mayte Rodriguez, studies the patient’s blood sample under a microscope and alarmed at what she sees, urges everyone to put on their masks. Blood splatters, people are stabbed and more horror ensues.

In the wake of what 2020 had to offer, “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker laid his dark science fiction anthology to rest indefinitely. Enter David Weil with a more optimistic take called “Solos.” Before making a second season of period piece “Hunters” for Amazon, Weil sought to produce something that would speak to pandemic-era themes of isolation and connection.
Taking what he learned from writing on the latest reboot of “The Twilight Zone,” Weil created his own sci-fi anthology limited series set in the near future. Embracing Covid-19 production constraints and employing a half-hour runtime unusual for the subgenre, most of the seven episodes of “Solos” take the format of a monologue.

Isolation is not usually the most inspiring topic for writers, with the difficulties the situation poses for creating conflict and a compelling story. But “Hunter” creator David Weil found the idea of being alone sparked his imagination in enough ways that he was able to develop a seven-part anthology series based entirely on solo plots, aptly titled, “Solos.”
The Amazon Prime Video show stars Nicole Beharie, Morgan Freeman, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Mackie, Uzo Aduba, Helen Mirren, Dan Stevens and Constance Wu in “character-driven stories” that “contend that even during our most seemingly isolated moments, in the most disparate of circumstances, we are all connected through the human experience.”
“Solos” creator, writer and director Weil said during TheWrap’s Emmy Screenings Series panel, which also featured “Solos” director Sam Taylor-Johnson, that the concept was originally formed for him many years ago, when Weil became infatuated with one storyteller telling one story.

Production designer Ruth Ammon has worked on iconic films and television shows from “Drop Dead Gorgeous” to “Heroes” and “Smash,” but the one area she has long wanted to play in was space. Working on Amazon Prime Video’s anthology series “Solos” finally gave her that chance. She describes the show as “The Great British Baking Show of Scenery Design” because of how each episode required completely unique settings to bring its story to life.
Each episode’s set for “Solos” is such a focal piece of the individual story, yet self-contained as well as varying in size and detail. How did you approach the builds when it came to whether or not you could work on multiple ones simultaneously?

“Pose” ends its run this June after three seasons. It’s a groundbreaking drama with more trans actors of color as series regulars than any other program in television history. And it’s an Emmy-winning show that earned a Best Drama Series nomination in 2019 for its first season. So it’s kind of surprising that so far it has zero trans representation in acting categories. Will that change this year?

“It’s very much a project that sprung out of the pandemic and the limitations on filming, but also thematically,” explains Dan Stevens about the science fiction anthology “Solos.” It asks “a lot of the questions that many people have been staring down during lockdown and during quarantine.” Created by David Weil for Amazon, the seven episodes feature esteemed actors giving monologues in isolated settings. Stevens continues in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above), “David clearly followed each one down the rabbit hole and birthed an episode from each one of those questions really.”

Over the past year, production designers needed to get creative in how they approach their work on films or television shows. For Solos, that involved production designer Ruth Ammon adapting to a completely virtual art department from home. “We were building 3D designs,” Ammon says, “and we actually had a virtual reality designer who would take our designs and turn them into proper virtual reality sets.”
Solos, an anthology series created by David Weil, is an exploration of what it means to be human. In seven unique stories, different characters deal with isolation and what it means to be alone in uncertain times. They discover connection to each other in the shared human experience of searching for togetherness.
In the episode title “Leah,” Anne Hathaway plays the title character as she tries to discover the secret of time travel. Leah is a brilliant scientist with a laboratory in the basement of her mother’s home.

Not sure if you knew this, but 2020 sucked. Filled with loneliness, isolation, and a lot of time to think about our lives… sounds like the makings of a television series, right?
