- Once upon a time an astronaut called Helen Fyre (the voice of Felicity Kendal), a lady with phenomenal intellect and wealth, installed herself as Britain's new Queen. A new age began with a new type of monarchy and a new type of politics. Helen lived high above in a space station called Hansegret 1. She watched the Earth and every night her space station would pass over England's green and pleasant land multiple times over. Helen led her Hansegret team which had transformed Buckingham Palace into an industrial base in which to launch her pioneering space programme. She had invented advanced technology. Her team managed her space station and her secret plan on Earth.
Helen's two grown-up children were Ann (Flora Montgomery), a pioneering lab Scientist, and Mark (Samuel Clemens), a successful politician and a secret pioneer in the world of crypto-currency. Their Father had disappeared long ago at sea. Ann and Mark were separated at a young age and neither of them have any awareness of each other's existence.
Ann has a terrible medical condition. It affected her skin and various parts of her body. Her condition became worse and it began to threaten her life, slowing down her incredible lab research. Meanwhile, Mark ran for Prime Minister with an election imminent. Mark appeared on television and on radio and continually impressed the electorate. Crypto-currency is also a popular subject on television and radio.
One day, shortly after a row between Ann and her boyfriend John (James Atherton) on the subject of marriage, Ann's awareness of her troubling condition hit home. She continued to hide her condition as best she can from everyone, including from her personal assistant called Rat (Clara Hickman). Ann and Rat worked closely together at the Hansegret labs.
Ann was on the cusp of a massive medical break-through when she went missing. The press picked up on the story fast.
Helen used her immense power, managing a carefully chosen team of individuals including a Detective (Josephine Melville), a Doctor (Alex Dee) and even Rat herself. Helen's plan to change Ann's life began with her kidnapping and Ann was locked away in a MedPrison also known as the Slammer. Ann woke up to find herself surgically secured into a MedSuit and surrounded by advanced futuristic technology. Ann looked around the Slammer. Her highly academic and analytic mind only allowed her to show her vulnerability once.
Helen's mission, above all else, was to save Ann's life. Ann would become physically stronger so she would survive her own rocket launch to meet Helen aboard Hansegret 1. Helen wanted to give Ann a new purpose in life: mother and daughter would work together to change the world.
As the seasons passed Ann's biological transformation took place, signified by changes in her hair colour. Each season meant a hair change and each season presented Ann with futuristic technology and therefore various clues into whomever did this to her. Ann became an expert in the Slammer's tech, via the Quant Lens and she controlled secret cameras. Ann's boyfriend and friends worked tirelessly on the Find Ann Plan: they communicated closely with the Detective who secretly worked for Helen. One of the friends called Sophie (Victoria Emslie) was pregnant. Sophie's past as a forger caught up with her allowing the Detective to make her part of Helen's plan without her knowing it. Ann saw everything via the screens. Sophie liked John and it was clear that Sophie wanted John for herself. Ann had been missing for months and John's agoraphobia became worse. Sophie continued to visit him during her pregnancy. John wanted Ann's safe return. One day, John explained to Sophie the constant feeling of being trapped himself. In that moment, feelings overflowed and John and Sophie kissed. All recorded via secret cameras.
Whilst Ann was asleep, sometimes there appeared a mysterious man in the Slammer. His face covered by a hood, he checked on her and verified the equipment and then left. Though the mysterious man left things behind for Ann to discover, such as flowers or different forms of future tech like virtual reality eye scanners. It was these scanners that gave her more clues.
One evening, whilst the Detective stood outside the apartment from a meeting with John, inside the Slammer, a blinding light filled the MedPrison. When Ann's eyes adjusted to the darkness she finally saw the mysterious man in front of her. He wore his own MedSuit. The man had lowered his hood. It revealed her brother Mark. Mark agreed to be part of Helen's plan because of what happened to their Father at sea when he disappeared. Mark blamed Ann for leaving him alone on the boat but Ann's drug abuse had left her with no memories of the past. Mark explained his own past, except he left out of his story what next was in store for Ann. Suddenly, during a pause in his story over one of the objects owned by Helen, Mark has a heart attack. Panic and dread filled the MedPrison. Ann thought fast and she used the umbilical cord from her own MedSuit as a defibrillator to save Mark's life. Shortly after white gas suddenly filled the Slammer, Mark slowly opened his eyes. His life saved by Ann who remained unconscious from the vapour.
A few days later, during a meeting between the Detective and Mark it is revealed that the Detective is Mark's adoptive mother. The Detective assisted Mark in achieving his dream: he won the election to become Prime Minister and his secret crypto wealth has been transformed into billions of pounds.
Released from the Slammer, Ann found herself in her apartment corridor. Disorientated she stepped into the lift which carried her down to the car park. The Detective fully prepared to meet Ann had been waiting for her by the car. The Detective told Ann that she will take her to meet her Helen. Ann assessed her current situation carefully and tactically accepted under the circumstances.
From the car, Ann saw the outside world: open green spaces and familiar areas of the city. The Detective unearthed key details about her past and delivered Ann to the rocket base at Buckingham Palace, as agreed. Fanfare surrounded the rocket's count down and thousands of people cheered in the streets as the rocket raced towards the stars. Ann is launched into space aboard her Hansegret rocket.
John stepped outside for the first time in years as the sound of the rocket can he heard in the background. John became a father to Sophie's baby. He has also made millions of pounds due to his early purchase of crypto. On the day of the rocket launch, John, Sophie and the baby take a walk outside on a beautiful spring day. The curse of John's agoraphobia broken finally. The Detective takes Ann's place in the Slammer to fix her own health conditions. This fulfilled her own ambition. The familiar Slammer sounds swirled around the Detective as she read a book, with Mark's police escort appearing on the Quant Lens behind her. The Doctor continued to liaise with Rat and Rat continued to take credit for Ann's pioneering medical research. On television, Rat won an award and dedicated it to the life of Ann Waterman.
Secret cameras showed Helen as she watched her daughter's rocket moving closer to her space station. Helen's plan to meet Ann has succeeded: Mother and daughter together. Ann has been given a new identity. Ann's silence during the rocket launch spoke volumes as Ann's expression depicts a new fiery purpose in her healthy-looking eyes.
Whether it is happily ever after remained to be seen, especially when technical problems started to happen on Hansegret 1.
