- The cultivated Mrs Adela Gereth is worried that her son Owen will marry Mona Brigstock - she considers Mona to be brash and completely unsuitable. Owen soon gets engaged to Mona and expects to take over Poynton, the family's large country house, which is filled with valuable antique furniture, pictures and collections. Mrs Gereth does not want to let go of the house, but she is even more attached to the contents.—neal62@suddenlink.net
- Adapted from the 1897 novel by Henry James, this four-part British miniseries was set in motion by the death of Mr. Gereth, lord and master of the English estate of Poynton Park. The "spoils" referred to the valuable art works and furnishings in Poynton, and a bone of contention between the widowed Mrs. Gereth and her son Owen. They disagree over Owen's choice in women, with Mrs. Gereth insisting that her son choose a woman who shares her own artistic sensibilities rather than marry his first inclination, a girl with little understanding or taste. The unhappy witness to the quarrel is Fleda Vetch, a friend of the mother's and contemporary of the son. First broadcast by the BBC in 1970, The Spoils of Poynton was shown as part of American Masterpiece Theatre beginning April 4, 1971.—neal62@suddenlink.net
