- In the Series Premiere, James Purefoy ("Rome") stars as Teddy Rist, a successful tycoon whose life is forever changed after rescuing a young boy during a hurricane in the Nigerian town he was visiting.
- Tycoon Teddy Rist () races his dirt bike through a Nigerian jungle until rebels shoot at him, knocking him from the vehicle. Later, he tells a pretty bartender that he was trying to deliver cholera vaccine to a remote village. When she challenges his tale, Teddy reveals his back story: He was initially in Africa to close a business deal. When a hurricane's flooding caused him to be evacuated from his hotel, he saved a young boy from drowning.
As co-CEO of Manhattan-based Maidstone-Rist, a company that buys and sells natural resources, he tried in vain to convince his partner, Philip Maidstone (), to relaunch their Nigerian oil deal. He also tried to come to terms with the death of his young son Bobby, which recently resulted in a divorce from his wife, Julia (). When conducting a TV interview, Teddy had a meltdown due to memories of the Nigerian boy. Then, he told Philip and his wife Olivia () -- who runs the firm's non-profit foundation -- of his plan to return to Nigeria with bodyguard Dex () and assistant A.J. () to help the disaster-stuck inhabitants.
Teddy's efforts were dismissed by government officials after landing in Nigeria, leading him to local doctor Chima Balo (). She complained that her cholera vaccine was being held up by red tape, preventing her aiding sick villagers. After dealing with smugglers and greasing local palms, Teddy acted as overseer as the vaccine was transported to the village via helicopter. However, the helicopter was stopped by overzealous DEA agents, after which Teddy walked through the jungle with the vaccine. Upon trading away his cell phone and shoes, Teddy hopped on a dirt bike, at which point he was fired upon by rebels. Escaping into the jungle again, he continued the trek until being felled by a poisonous snake's bite. Propelled by a vision of his dead son, Teddy continued to the village before collapsing. There, he awakened to find Chima telling him of how many deaths he prevented.
Back at the bar, Philip joins Teddy, causing the dubious bartender to realize that Teddy's tale was completely true. Though Teddy promises Philip to end his philanthropic streak, he returns to the Nigerian village and finds the young boy that he saved from drowning. There, Teddy gives the boy a spinning top which belonged to his late son.
