- In the office of slippery FBI agent Jackie Rohr, his boss, Rob Putnam, is waiting to tell Jackie that he's going to transfer him to a small-town satellite office about an hour and a half south of Boston. Rob's boss, U.S. Attorney Karen Shimizu, wants Jackie stifled, and Rob is afraid Jackie will do something to screw up Rob's gilded path to retirement.
ADA Decourcy Ward's boss, Guy Dan, is displeased with Decourcy's handling of the Anton Campbell case, and with the fact that Decourcy's wife, Siobhan Quays, is Anton's defense attorney. The case is shaky because even with the victim, Toussaint Senegal, testifying against Anton, the word of one gangster against another is considered unreliable.
In an FBI lobby, Shimizu tells Jackie she expects that one day he's going to end up incarcerated.
Siobhan advises Anton to play it cool at his bail hearing.
Kelvin Campbell, Anton's younger brother, appears to be trying to psych himself up to rob a convenience store at gunpoint, but backs down after a school bus lets some kids out. He goes home and lies to his mother that he was in school today.
The new parish woman from Northern Ireland, Maeve Regan, convinces Jenny and Benny Rohr to drive down to Rhode Island to get tattoos, because in those days tattoo parlors were illegal in Massachusetts.
Community activist and Anton and Kelvin's mother, Grace Campbell, personally hands in her HUD grant application for Roxbury, the predominantly black section of Boston that she lives in, but the guy pours cold water on her expectations, because both of her sons have had run-ins with the law, which makes the optics bad for her.
Decourcy and Siobhan's pillow talk is that they agree they don't want to face off against each other in court, but that the law has to do its thing.
Anton gets bail, much to Decourcy's displeasure, but Decourcy manages to make the bail amount uncomfortably high.
Grace asks her pastor for a loan from the church to put up for Anton's bail. The pastor says he'll ask the elders, but pours more cold water on her.
Benny goes to a party where she's hanging with high-school seniors, but she bails after talk of sex and offers of alcohol.
Cathy Ryan, widow of armored car robber Frankie Ryan and killer of her brother-in-law, Jimmy Ryan, goes to Roxbury to try to find Anton and take over Jimmy's regular parcel of drugs to sell. She sticks out like a blanched thumb and gets the cold shoulder from Anton's guys.
Grace gets turned down for a bank loan for Anton's bail money. The loan officer doesn't even try to let her down easy.
Benny asks Jenny when did she get over being sexually assaulted. Jenny says that some things you never do get over, but that Benny has her future ahead of her. Jackie overhears and interrupts to make a confession about being abused as a child and trying to burn down his parents' house with his parents still in it (they made it out O.K. without checking to see if Jackie was O.K.).
Decourcy visits Anton in lockup basically to taunt him into a plea deal to incarcerate him in Norfolk state prison rather than in Walpole state prison where rival gang members are incarcerated and are likely to threaten Anton's life.
Grace's pastor calls to tell her that the church elders denied her request for a loan, and she reports that no bail bondsman will put up the cash unless she has collateral (she doesn't).
Grace goes into the office of the Braxton Summit Tenant Association and writes a check for the bail money on the Association's account.
Jenny and Jackie sort of bond over both having traumas and tattoos now. They have sex, and actually seem to be into it for a change.
Anton is released into his mother's custody, so obviously Grace used that check. She's really strung out about how he's a dope-dealing street thug. He kind of throws it back on her and says that what he was saving up his money for was to buy her a cottage on Cape Cod. He drives her home, and says he's going to go get the cash to pay her back. She says she won't take drug money. He claims it's actually sports gambling winnings.
Anton somehow manages to drive up behind Decourcy and Siobhan as they're driving home from dinner with the mayor. Anton rear-ends them, gets out, shoots into their car, and drives off. Siobhan is wounded.
At a hospital, Decourcy gives a statement to some cops. A doctor tells Decourcy and his in-laws, Todd Hastings & Prof. Eloise Hastings, that Siobhan's surgery was successful and that her pregnancy is still viable.
Jenny visits her mom, Rosa Congemi, who's recovering from surgery at her sister's house and bitching about everything. Rosa admits that Jenny's abusive father is still alive after all, but withholds his current whereabouts from Jenny to try to move back into the Rohr household. Jenny says, "Eff you, I'll find him myself."
When Siobhan wakes up in the hospital, Decourcy avoids telling her that her own client shot her (though it's far more likely that Anton was trying to hit Decourcy). Decourcy seems to be regretting that taunt he made to Anton.
Jackie buttonholes Decourcy in a hospital corridor and offers to commit revenge murder on Anton. Decourcy asks him if he's wearing a wire.
Jackie asks Shimizu to wangle a way to get him assigned to look for Anton. Jackie is frustrated by the irony, because the one time he's sincere, he gets the most push-back from everyone. Against her better judgment, Shimizu agrees to get him assigned to the Anton Campbell hunt.
Isaac Turner, one of Anton's guys, confronts Cathy outside her apartment building in Charlestown and offers her drugs to sell. She's disconcerted that he knows where she lives and that she has children, but she gets him the money for the drugs.
Decourcy is not pleased to hear that Jackie has this new assignment. Decourcy insists that everything has to be done aboveboard.
A bit coked up, Jackie drives over to Braxton Summit in Roxbury and accosts Grace in her home at gunpoint for Anton's whereabouts.
