Like everything else in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” the decision to change Doc Ock to Olivia Octavius turned the animated adventure upside down. Co-director Bob Persichetti proposed the gender-switched role as a subversive twist; when the production cast Kathryn Hahn (“Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation”) as her voice, Sony Animation finally believed that she would make a formidable villain.

“The freedom we had with an alt universe was an opportunity to lean into something very interesting with a female,” Persichetti said. “Early on, we had aspirations to get Kathryn Hahn to be a really smart, idiosyncratic, quirky but dangerous villain. And we fell in love with her voice and the way she played her, and then we just had to build a visualization of the two sides of her. And that was where the real fun took place.

Unsurprising surprises dominated this morning’s Producers Guild of America documentary nominees. While the PGA’s feature nominees often align with Oscar contenders, that’s often untrue for the documentaries. In 2014, the PGA nominated “The Green Prince,” “Life Itself,” “Merchants of Doubt,” “Virunga, and “Particle Fever;” only “Virunga made the final Oscar five. (The winner was Laura Poitras’ “Citizenfour.)
Last year, the PGA did select eventual Oscar nominees “Amy” (which won the Oscar) and “The Look of Silence,” but also chose “The Hunting Ground” and “Meru,” both of which made the Oscar shortlist of 15; PGA selection”Something Better to Come” didn’t even make that cut.
Today, the committee of some 30 or more PGA documentary producers nominated two anticipated films in Roger Ross Williams’ “Life, Animated” (The Orchard/A & E) and Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” (Espn Films). Both were much-lauded Sundance hits and made the Doc NYC Shortlist.

I’ve spoken to many people in my time, but few (if any) have the same credentials as Walter Murch, whose résumé would be amazing if it was only for the collaborations with Francis Ford Coppola: editing and / or audio work on all three Godfather films and The Conversation, truly groundbreaking sound design on Apocalypse Now, editing the terribly ignored Youth Without Youth and Tetro — even being around for the early days of The Rain People and lesser-seen oddities such as Captain Eo. But that’s not the half of it, really, since he’s also been instrumental in proving how consumer-grade editing software can be as effective as high-end systems. And then there’s the work that helped George Lucas getting his career started. And the cult sensation that is his only directorial effort, Return to Oz. Or his book, In the Blink of an Eye, which is...

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

With the Mpse's nominations logged and official, all of the guilds and industry groups have had their say in the nominees stage of the season, culminating with tomorrow's Oscar nominations. Leading the way with mentions from 11 separate groups each — and boy this must make Fox Searchlight happy — is "Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Just behind with 10 is "The Imitation Game." What's interesting is what's just under that level. You have both "Gone Girl" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" chalking up eight groups. The former may or may not end up in the Best Picture category tomorrow (nothing would surprise me), but the latter sure did come on strong for its elements. After that, "American Sniper" has seven, "Boyhood," "Nightcrawler," "Interstellar," "Into the Woods," "The Theory of Everything" and "Unbroken" each have six and Sony Classics' hopefuls "Foxcatcher" and "Whiplash" ring in with five. That pretty much covers the landscape,...

“Citizenfour,” Laura Poitras’ documentary about Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden, won four awards at the Cinema Eye Honors in New York City on Wednesday, reinforcing its position as the dominant non-fiction film of 2014.
The film swept the top categories, winning Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking as well as Outstanding Achievement in Direction, Editing and Production.
It became the second film in Cinema Eye history to win four awards, after “Waltz With Bashir,” and the second to win best feature and best director after Steve James’ “The Interrupters.”

In my opinion, there are better documentaries than "Citzenfour" in the Oscar race this year. Much better. But to judge by the circuit, they were nary a blip. Really unfortunate, I feel, but a steamroller is a steamroller. Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their film and television nominations for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards, with winners set to be announced on January 24 and they couldn't have come at a better time... for me at least. I have been spending the last couple of days working on my 2015 Oscar predictions, finally adding predictions for the categories I had not yet set live and putting final touches on those I've had live since March of last year. The Oscar nomination ballots close this coming Thursday, January 8 and you better believe I'm looking at this list to get a better idea of what the industry is thinking. Overall, there aren't any real surprises, though one film continues to make a strong big for a nomination, that being Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, which has continued to perform well in the precursor nominations. We also see a nomination for...

Looking over the big movie titles of 2014, there aren’t a whole bunch of trends to be found. The most noticeable has to be privacy/surveillance in the digital age, which is the subject of a major documentary (Citizenfour), one of the top-grossing hits of the year (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) and one of the worst box office duds (Men, Women & Children). Also, there are other ties related to great scientific minds, such as with the oft-acknowledged pair The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything, plus how those relate to films as different as The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz, Transcendence, Particle Fever and Interstellar. And there was the surprising trend in truly good vampire movies, namely Only Lovers Left Alive, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and What We Do in the Shadows, although that last one hasn’t officially been released yet. One...

This year, Richard Linklater’s "Boyhood" played in the closing night slot of the True/False Film Fest, a festival dedicated to documentaries. The organizers explained the that, because of its documentary-like production schedule, the film represented something that only non-fiction is capable of. "For most casual filmgoers, the role of the producer may be mysterious, in part because their efforts are designed to be invisible onscreen. But a film like 'Boyhood,' seamless as a viewing experience, also demands that we acknowledge the epic care and attention to detail than went into its creation. What's more, Linklater's artistic process, by necessity, took into account the natural meanderings of his actor's lives, lending a verisimilitude to the action missing from many other fiction films." The folks behind the Cinema Eye awards clearly agree with True/False’s assessment and in the possibility that fiction can transcend its own narrative...

The Academy has announced the 15-wide documentary shortlist and apart from one title, it's is a very high-profile group of names. At least they are if you follow the world of documentary. I had discussed with a friend recently that last year's field may go down as the greatest in the category's history, but depending on how the branch votes this year they may just surpass it. I have already seen nine of the 15 and can vouch for almost all of them. Let's take a look.

The Producers Guild of America has a pretty good track record presaging the Best Picture winner at the Oscars. Since it began handiing out prizes in 1989, It first feted 17 of the 24 Oscar champs, including the last seven in a row. But how does it do when it comes to forecasting which Documentary Feature will win the Academy Award? -Break- This year's five nominees for the PGA prize are: "The Green Prince" "Life Itself" "Merchants of Doubt" "Particle Fever" "Virunga" Since the PGA began giving out this award in 2007, it has honored three of the seven films that went on to win the Oscar while three of its champs were snubbed outright by the academy and one contended there but was defeated. 2007: "Sicko" (lost Oscar to "Taxi to the Dark Side") 2008: "Man on Wire" 2009: "The Cove" 2010: "Waiting for 'Super..."...

Monday morning, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced its Documentary Motion Pictures nominees that will advance in the voting process for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The feature nominations are a change of pace from previous announcements, including the Ida Awards and Cinema Eye’s Nonfiction awards. You won’t find heavy-hitters like "Citizenfour," "20,000 Days on Earth," or "The Overnighters" on this list. Instead, a few overlooked docs get the PGA bump This year's "Docuemntary Theatrical" category includes "The Green Prince," "Merchants of Doubt," "Particle Fever," "Life Itself," and "Virunga." While all five films earned positive reviews during their theatrical runs — and, in the case of "Particle Fever" and "Virunga," their prosporous lives on Netflix Instant — it's the latter two that enter the PGA nominations with Oscar traction. The preservation-conscious "Virunga" earned both Cinema Eye and Indie Spirit nominations. Steve James' Robert Ebert doc was snubbed by the latter,...

This is one of the most amazing festival stories I have heard yet. I met my friend Mitch Block (known to all industryites who care about documentaries and himself, worth a separate blog) on the circuit, and he introduced me to Keri Kukral and told me the two of them were organizing a science film festival at Cal Tech and Fox Studios to be held this December 6-8. They already have a VOD platform, website (www.rawscience.tv), YouTube channel, and are now selling tickets to the festival .
I am very partial to science and particularly to women in science because my family roots in science include the recent graduation of my niece from Stanford with her Master’s Degree in evolutionary biology.
Up to now, the only media-oriented science initiative I knew of was The Sloan Foundation which encourages science in media and in tandem, encourages women in science and media. On the festival front, there exist only a handful of science film festivals including Goethe Institute’s 10 year old Science Film Festival in October which showed 78 films from 27 countries from Se Asia, No. Africa and the Middle East; St. Petersburg’s International Science Film Festival World of Knowledge which began in 2006; the seven year old Imagine Science Film Festival in October featuring 89 films (5 features) from 20 countries which counts 35 women directors, Scinema in Australia since 2001, Jackson Hole Wildlife Ff, Pariscience Ff and a very few others .
Now we can add Raw Science TV and Raw Science Film Festival to be held for the first time ever at Cal Tech’s Beckman Auditorium with an awards ceremony at Fox Studios. Of course, Cal Tech is pushing this festival to its student body, but the public is cordially invited as well. Up to $40,000 in prizes will be awarded for science and technology videos and films.
Raw Science is a new online network that produces and distributes on-demand videos, news and original programming about science and technology. The festival is a collaboration with the Science and Entertainment Exchange of the National Academy of Sciences, the Caltech to present the first annual Raw Science Film Festival.
Award winners and runners-up will be screened at Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium on December 6, 2014 and the Awards Ceremony will be held in the Zanuck Theater at 20th Century Fox Studios on December 8, 2014.
Organized within a year’s time, this festival is aimed at a broad public and celebrates filmmakers inspired by science.
“We wanted to create a film festival that significantly supported filmmakers who share the wonderful world of science and technology through exceptional film and video content,” explained Mitchell Block, Executive Director of Programming for Raw Science. “Our goal is to find, present, award and promote the youngest generation of student filmmakers all the way to the seasoned professional filmmaker, and in any style of film imaginable, be it narrative, documentary short, feature.”
We know sci-fi has a broad appeal, so let’s start there and later discover who this amazing woman, Keri Kukral, is and how she ventured into mostly unoccupied space.
The festival will screen the finalists for the eight awards offered in the categories of Less Than Ten Minutes and More Than Ten Minutes by students and by professionals to show on campus at its 1,100 seat theater. 20th Century Fox’s 400 seat Zanuck Theater will host the Awards Ceremony which will screen the winners. There will also be special theatrical feature and doc awards presented.
The call for submissions went out through the campus and through various film groups like Ifp. Mitch Block, who is the director of programming, made the first selection which will be judged. The Raw Science Film Festival Jury includes Academy Award ™ winning & nominated filmmakers Luke Matheny (Best Short Film, “God of Love”), Randal Kleiser (“Grease” and “Honey I Blew up the Kid”), Martha Coolidge (“Real Genius” and “The Twilight Zone” TV Series) and John Singleton (“Boyz n the Hood” and “Tupac”), and Iram Parveen Bilal (“Josh”).
Now, let’s return to who is Keri Kukral:
As former professional ballet dancer and engineer, Keri Kukral has a deep appreciation for the merging of creative and technical fields. She was chosen to train on full scholarship by Ruth Page at 10 years old. She performed under the direction of Larry Long and the Chicago Tribune Charities, New York City Ballet dancer Bryan Pitts with Ballet Oklahoma, and as an apprentice at Joffrey Ballet. After retiring from ballet, Keri attended Purdue University where she received a degree in biomedical/electrical engineering. She spent over a decade developing medical devices including the “The Navigator,” one of the first devices approved to monitor blood glucose real-time continuously with wireless data transfer. Keri also managed R&D for products including the “Apollo" micro catheter for use in treating brain Avms.
Keri has always loved science media.
For the decade while she was working in engineering, she would finance special trips to interview people she cared about. “I first started jumping into science media by documenting a group of radio astronomers led by Bob Dixon in Ohio with an organization called Naapo. That eventually led to many others including Stephen Hawking; Michio Kaku of string theory fame; and Nikolai Kardashev (deputy director of the Russian Space Research Institute).
She would bring with her Donald Goldsmith, Raw Science’s science editor who cowrote “Origins” with Neil deGrasse Tyson and whose college advisor was Carl Sagan, and the cinematographer Paul Goldsmith (no relation) whose Nyu Film School’s classmate was Mitch Block and who introduced the two. It was Mitch who suggested the film festival.
She was aware that the audience for science was quickly leaving TV and migrating to the internet. It began to be clear to her that one could make a legitimate network on the internet, and so she moved from her hobby to her new entrepreneurial endeavor by winning a pitch contest held by Cal Tech and Idealab. They seed-funded the medical start-up where she was currently working.
The newly created VoD platform has just licensed its first film, “Particle Fever”, a feature film that took 12 years to make about the discovery of the Higgs Boson, popularly known as “The God Particle”. Netflix and Raw Science share this film and there are more in the pipeline.

In a lousy session for new releases, Nightcrawler was the best of a bad lot in Australian cinemas last weekend.
Jake Gyllenhaal.s chilling turn as a sociopath in writer-director Dan Gilroy.s biting satire of media exploitation and corruption delivered $576,000 on 96 screens.
That's a reasonable start for the indie thriller co-starring Riz Ahmed, Rene Russo and Bill Paxton, which has earned $US28.7 million in its first month in the Us.
Nationwide takings plunged by 37% to $11.1 million, which was way below the corresponding week for the past two years, according to Rentrak.s estimates.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 raked in nearly $5.8 million, despite selling around half as many tickets as in the opening weekend, but has amassed a lucrative $20.8 million.
Chris Nolan.s Interstellar banked $1.6 million in its fourth orbit, down 25%, advancing to $15.6 million.

The inside look at Edward Snowden’s Nsa leak also earned praise in Directing, Editing, Production, Cinematography, and the Audience Choice category. Poitras is no stranger to Cinema Eye’s awards — she won the 2011 Directing Award for "The Oath." Familiar faces rounded out the Oustanding Feature category, including Steve James’ Roger Ebert portrait "Life Itself," Jesse Moss’ tale of a North Dakota oil boom town, "The Overnighters," Iain Forsythe & Jane Pollard’s "20,000 Days on Earth," a look musician Nick Cave, and Orlando von Einsiedel’s environment-minded "Virunga." Thirty-six feature films and six shorts will vie for this year’s Cinema Eye Honors for Nonfiction Filmmaking. Other...

Other leading nominees are Life Itself and 20,000 Days on Earth.
Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour, about Nsa whistleblower Edward Snowden, leads the pack at the Cinema Eye Awards nominations, with six nods.
Steve James’ Life Itself about Roger Ebert and Iain Forsythe and Jane Pollard’s 20,000 Days on Earth about Nick Cave followed close behind with five nominations each.
The nominees for the awards, which recognise exemplary craft and innovation in nonfiction film, were announced last night at an industry party at Cph: Dox in Copenhagen.
In addition to those three, the other nominations for the Nonfiction Feature Film were Jesse Moss’ The Overnighters and Orlando von Einsiedel’s Virunga.
Poitras and James are also nominated in the Direction category, and each has previously won that Cinema Eye prize, Poitras with The Oath in 2011 and James in 2012 with The Interrupters. Poitras becomes the most nominated filmmaker in Cinema Eye history with nine nominations.

Further reminding us that the Academy Awards are irrelevant in year-end discussions for the best in documentary film, according to the experts at the Cinema Eye Honors’ voting committee, Laura Poitras’ Citizenfour, Steve James’ Life Itself and Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard’s 20,000 Days on Earth would be among the best docu films of the year, leading the pack in almost all categories. Not to be overlooked, Jesse Moss’ The Overnighters and Robert Greene’s Actress received kudos in Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Feature Filmmaking and Outstanding Achievement in Direction while the major surprise of the noms belongs to Orlando von Einsiedel’s Virunga (presented at the Tribeca and Hot Docs Film Fests) grabbing a total of three. Left completely off the scorecard, Manakamana failed to produce a single nom. The Cinema Eye Honors winners will be announced on Wednesday, January 7 at New York’s Museum of the Moving Image.
