Deliberate mistransation

This is an excellent program that we enjoyed watching because it showed some of the less touristy neighborhoods in Rome. And I appreciate that Mr Tucci is able to converse in Italian with his subjects.

However, there was definitely some 'self-censorship" going on when Stanley was in one kitchen with two chefs. Speaking Italian, Tucci commented that he has an Italian profile like Il Duce, that is like Mussolini. "Il Duce" was translated into English subtitles "like Julius Caesar". I laughed out loud and had to rewind to ensure that I heard it correctly.

Stanley, you got it right the first time.

Just finished watching Tucci's second episode; ROME. Dude have you ever been to Rome? Ever had a Jewish artichoke?? The 80 year old survivor 's passion was about the Jewish influence on Rome's culinary history. Perhaps you need to watch it again.. Tucci let her do the talking. She was AWESOME When you get a chance go to the Ghetto in Rome and enjoy the cuisine.. Wait until the artichokes are in season!! The fried are the BEST!!!

There was a woman on who lost all of her family in the holocaust and only survived because her uncle hid her. Tucci was basically like "Aww, too bad for you" and then they cut to a scene of the woman making artichokes for Tucci. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME???

A bit too visceral

I know it's a cultural phenomenon, but for the second week in a row we are given sustained close-up sequences of the cruelty to animals necessary for Italy's cuisine.

The section on the use of offal was downright disgusting. Do you really want to see an animal completely dissected with its leftover internal organs - brains, stomach - on proud display?

Last week, after a delightful history of pizza (and believe me: once you've been to Napoli and tasted true pizza, it will erase memories of any slice you ever had elsewhere, and make you crave it for years to come!), we had to endure a section on how rabbits are trapped and, with Tucci "sparing" us the obvious details, next shown being cooked and devoured.

It's enough to make you vegan (which is not a bad idea!).
