- Robert Timmins is surprised when Margaret Ellison asks if he would give her away at her wedding. Robert and the late Reverend Ellison never got along and both held to their principals quite strongly. Thomas Brown and others are appalled over her choice and her fiancé tells her so in no uncertain terms. Laura and her father see Alf Arless' friend Nan kissing the farmer's son and young Laura can't understand or accept what, for all appearances, appears to be a betrayal. She writes Nan a letter without thinking it all through. James learns through a firm of solicitors that some 10 years before, he fathered a child whose mother has now died. He's torn about making his existence known to the boy but when he decides to bring the boy to Candleford, fate intervenes. Emma fears that she may again be pregnant.—garykmcd
