Hollywood’s It girl, Sydney Sweeney, has recently stood out as the face of budding Hollywood. The Spokane girl recently appeared in a host of projects across various genres. Starting from her rom-com alongside Glen Powell, Anyone But You to her Marvel-Sony outing with Madame Web, and her horror-thriller, Immaculate, she has dominated most of the screens in early 2024. Now, the road is all but set for her to switch to another genre and essay a biopic with David Michôd serving as its director.

However, the band wanted to capture how the songs have “morphed and changed” over the past few decades. “They’ve evolved out into totally different arrangements and then made their way back to the original arrangement — we’ve been playing them that long at this point,” he explained. “On the re-recording, you can tell it’s the same song, but there are different embellishments.”

The X-Men have finally come back home to the MCU after the acquisition of Fox Studios by Disney. The characters will be making their official MCU debut with the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, which sees Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and a whole bunch of other actors crossing over to the franchise.
The MCU has also reportedly begun work on making an X-Men film. An industry insider recently reported that the studio was looking for writers who could balance comedy and drama. The report also mentioned that the new films would focus more on the female mutants. While previous female-centered Marvel films have not worked for the franchise, it might just be the best foot forward with the X-Men.

The seventh edition of The Changing Face of Europe, a section in Toronto’s Hot Docs Film Festival, explores the cultural, economic and political forces shaping contemporary Europe.
From an investigation of a right-wing group in Fabien Greenberg and Bård Kjøge Rønning’s “Norwegian Democrazy” to the fight for bodily freedom in Elina Psykou’s “Stray Bodies,” this year’s selection broaches a series of urgent — and, at many times, highly-sensitive — sociopolitical topics at the forefront of European society from filmmakers who may not always get the support they need within the international festival landscape.
“The section is very important because it allows us to get films from filmmakers who we wouldn’t normally get films from,” Hot Docs festival programming director Heather Haynes tells Variety. “It helps create an exchange and communication between what’s happening in Europe and what we are doing at Hot Docs.”

The next iteration of The Office is coming together.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the new take on the beloved NBC Steve Carell comedy has cast the first two members of what will be the ensemble comedy with Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) and Domhnall Gleeson (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) becoming the first two to join the cast of the potential series.
Reps for Universal Television, which is producing the updated take from creators Greg Daniels and Michael Koman (Nathan for You), declined to comment as the details surrounding the project remain closely guarded. A platform for the project has not yet been determined as sources say Daniels and the studio want to make sure the take is right before setting it up at a network/streamer. The move to add free streaming channels is the latest bid by Disney to increase engagement on its streaming platform.
Fresh off a proxy fight win against activist investor Nelson Peltz, Disney CEO Bob Iger is feeling confident and emboldened to fully enact his strategy to get the company’s streaming segment to profitability as soon as humanly possible. A new report from The Information suggests that the company will soon be bringing free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels on its flagship streaming service Disney+ in an effort to increase revenue and engagement. The plan reportedly will include around-the-clock linear channels that broadcast titles from Star Wars, Marvel, and other popular franchises owned by the company.
Disney+ will reportedly keep these channels behind a paywall, making them available only to subscribers. There are few details available as yet, such as the number of channels available or a launch date. Disney launched...

The MCU’s ‘Echo’ was a significant show for several reasons. Firstly, it marked the first TV-ma show within the MCU and was part of the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, debuting on Hulu simultaneously. Additionally, it played a role in establishing the timeline of the MCU by incorporating elements from the Netflix Defenders Saga.
Despite initial doubts from fans due to Echo’s relatively lesser-known status in the comics, the show pleasantly surprised audiences with its action and Alaqua Cox’s performance. With the post-credits scene setting up events for the upcoming ‘Daredevil: Born Again,’ it’s clear that Echo will continue to play a significant role in the MCU’s future.
It’s uncertain if there will be a season 2 of ‘Echo’ since ‘Loki’ is the only MCU show confirmed for a second season. However, Cox expressed her desire for Maya’s story to continue in a recent interview with Screenrant.

MCU’s ‘Echo’ was a significant show for many reasons. First, it was the first TV-ma show released on the platform as a part of the MCU, it was also the first show to release under the ‘Marvel Spotlight’ banner, and the first to release on Hulu simultaneously. The show also changed the MCU timeline canonizing Netflix’s Defenders Saga.
While plenty of fans expected the show to fail since Echo is in large part, a lesser and not exactly popular character in the comics, it was a breath of fresh air. Fans were surprised both by the action and by Cox’s performance, and needles to say, we can expect to see more of Echo in the future, considering that the show, through the post-credits scene, directly led to the events of the upcoming ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’

Alaqua Cox’s character Maya Lopez, the adopted daughter of the supervillain Kingpin, made her debut in Jonathan Igla’s Hawkeye (2021). The character, also referred to as Echo, is among the few deaf comic book characters. Following that, the actress played the lead role in the spin-off series Echo (2024), which co-starred Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil.
Alaqua Cox in and as Echo
It remains to be seen where Cox’s character will appear following the conclusion of the Echo finale, but Marvel Studios is obviously putting time, resources, and efforts into the new fan-favorite character. The actress, 27, recently discussed what she is looking forward to from the potential second season. Cox’s wish to join forces with Daredevil, a street-level superhero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is what has everyone’s attention.

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have been locked in to reprise the roles of hero Matt Murdock / Daredevil and villain Wilson Fisk / Kingpin, characters they originally played on the Marvel-inspired Netflix series Daredevil, on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again ever since Marvel and Disney+ started pushing the show forward. When their supporting cast was being assembled at the end of 2022, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had signed on to appear on the show as a love interest to the Fisk – with the word being that she was taking over the role of his wife Vanessa Marianna Fisk, who had previously been played by Ayelet Zurer on the Netflix show. Apparently there had been scheduling issues with Zurer, who said she was “sad to not take part” in the new series… which, at the time, wasn’t meant to line up with the Netflix show perfectly. Filming...

Just a couple days after saw some great images of Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal on the set of the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again – where they reprise the roles of Marvel heroes Matt Murdock / Daredevil and Frank Castle / The Punisher, characters they originally played on shows that were released through the Netflix streaming service (and can now be found on Disney+) – it has been revealed that Daredevil: Born Again has wrapped production. Central Casting broke the news by sharing a picture of Cox at the wrap party.
The show didn’t have an easy ride through production. Filming started in early 2023, then when the strikes hit, it was decided that it needed to undergo a creative overhaul. This overhaul has ensured that this new series is now directly connected to the Daredevil series that ran for three seasons on Netflix. As of the recent Daredevil-related series Echo, all...

Following the faceplant and failure of “The Marvels” last November—Marvel’s lowest-grossing film of all time and their first big bomb—pundits were seemingly writing an early epitaph for Marvel Studios. But three Marvel cycles later, the super-well-received “What If…?” season two in December, the much-better-than-anticipated reception to the live-action “Echo” series in January, and the glowing reviews of “X-Men ’97, things definitely appear to be on the upswing for Marvel.

The release of ‘Echo’ show brought several new things to the MCU. It was the first show to air under the Marvel Spotlight banner and the first character-driven R-rated show. Despite the relatively unknown character helming it, it achieved decent success. The most groundbreaking thing about ‘Echo’ was the fact that the showrunners were forced to canonize Netflix’s ‘The Defenders Saga’ and add it to the official MCU timeline.
Yes, doing this opened up some potential plotholes that will presumably be ironed out in future projects, but it had to be done. Kingpin played a massive role in ‘Echo’ and his backstory played a massive role, the showrunners had no choice but to add Netflix’s shows to the MCU Timeline despite not referencing them at all in prior Disney+ projects. Brad Winderbaum explained their train of thought in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Did anybody call for a lawyer?
We can barely contain our excitement about the news that Disney+ is bringing back Daredevil in a bid to reignite the character for Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That said, audiences were still left wondering whether some characters survived the Blip, including those who only entered the Marvel Studios fray with post-Avengers: Endgame projects such as Daredevil and Kingpin.

“Echo,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s newest TV show, made its debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings in 10th place for the week of Jan. 8-14. The series was watched for 731 million minutes in its first six days of availability on Disney+.
This marks a success for the MCU, as its TV projects typically fail to make Nielsen’s overall Top 10 chart when they first premiere, instead debuting on the streaming originals chart and progressing towards the overall chart over a matter of weeks. For example, Season 2 of “Loki” premiered in October but didn’t appear on the chart until its finale aired in November.
It should be noted, however, that “Echo” had a measurement advantage: All five episodes of the limited series dropped at once, helping to boost its total minutes watched. With a lack of upcoming episodes, “Echo” will likely also fall off the Nielsen charts more quickly than other Marvel shows.

These days it's strange to think of Marvel struggling to outdo DC at the box office. But believe it or not, there was a time when the latter was the undisputed champ of superhero filmmaking. Director Richard Donner kicked off that winning streak with 1978's "Superman," the film that provided the blueprint for the modern blockbuster. Next, Tim Burton solidified DC's box office prowess with 1989's "Batman" — a film that made a heck of a lot of money at the box office and established the principles of modern blockbuster marketing.
Meanwhile, Marvel had this comparatively abject filmography to offer: 1986's "Howard the Duck," 1989's "The Punisher," and the direct-to-video "Captain America" in 1990. By the time DC and Warner Bros.' "Batman Forever" hit in 1995 and made $336 million globally (an impressive number for the time) it seemed DC would rule the superhero blockbuster space for a long time to come.

Not since 2019’s crime thriller The Gentleman has Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey gotten a chance to thrill audiences, but it looks like he’s getting closer at finding his next project in a big way. Sources tell Deadline that McConaughey is in negotiations to star in Comet Films and Blumhouse’s The Lost Bus, with Paul Greengrass in negotiations to direct and Apple Original Films in discussions to board the film.
Brad Ingelsby adapted the Lost Bus script from Lizzie Johnson’s book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson, about the 2018 Camp Fire that became the deadliest fire in California history.
The film’s story will be told through the perspective of heroic bus driver Kevin McKay and school teacher Mary Ludwig, who helped navigate a bus full of children through the deadly wildfire as the town of Paradise is caught in the destruction and chaos.

THR reports that Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) is attached to star in The Memory Police, an adaptation of the acclaimed science fiction novel by Yoko Ogawa.
The Memory Police takes “place on an unnamed island off an unnamed coast where a majority of the island’s residents are subject to collective amnesia. They endure a process of forgetting things, including objects, people and daily rituals, with the amnesia enforced by an organization called The Memory Police. In the story, a novelist tries to hide her editor, who can still remember, from the Memory Police, while he encourages her to write her book.” The film adaptation will be directed by Reed Morano, best known for The Handmaid’s Tale and I Think We’re Alone Now, with Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich) penning the script.

Paris-based The Party Film Sales has boarded renowned Icelandic auteur Rúnar Rúnarsson’s fourth pic, “When the Light Breaks,” which is selected for Göteborg’s Nordic Film Market’s works in progress session.
Rúnarsson serves as producer together with Heather Millard of Iceland’s Compass Films, in co-production with local banner Halibut, Holland’s Revolver, France’s Eaux Vives/Jour2Fête and Croatia’s MP Film.
Lauded for his coming-of age tales set against Iceland’s majestic scenery, Rúnarsson saw his international breakthrough in 2008 with his Oscar-nominated short “Two Birds.” Since then, he has delivered equally poetic fare in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2011 entry “Volcano,” San Sebastian 2015 winner “Sparrows “ and 2019 Valladolid and Lübeck fest winner “Echo.”
As in his earlier works, Rúnarsson was inspired by a personal event for “When the Light Breaks”. “Ever since experiencing the loss of a friend as a young man, I wanted to deal with the...

The following contains spoilers for the Marvel Studios series "Echo."
The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something kind of unique, following the villain-to-antihero origin story of Maya Lopez, A.K.A. Echo (Alaqua Cox). It's the first TV-ma-rated show released under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner and it gets a little more experimental in its storytelling, beginning each episode with a flashback to one of Maya's ancestors awakening some great power within themselves. Each of these ancestors then helps Maya by passing their powers on to her, allowing her to access their agility, accuracy with ranged weapons, and even magical healing abilities. She is an echo of them, carrying the powers and responsibility to protect her people, which helps her to heal from her turbulent, crime-ridden past.
But who are each of these ancestors? The episodes only show brief glimpses of their story, but there's some historical context...

Exclusive: After making all five episodes available on Tuesday, Marvel Studios’ Echo has premiered at No. 1 on both the Disney+ and Hulu platforms. The series marked several firsts for a Marvel show: the first TV-ma series developed at the studio, the first time every episode was available to subscribers at once and the first time a whole Marvel series has been available on both platforms at the same time.
It’s also the first show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which the studio describes as a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity. While the studio hasn’t put out numbers, Echo is doing better than some of the consistently top-performing titles.
The series is getting recognition from both the Indigenous and deaf communities for its representation onscreen and off. Deadline’s Dominic Patten raved about the show, saying...

"Echo" looks as though it could mark the moment the Marvel Cinematic Universe might get back on track. This is the very first "Marvel Spotlight" series, indicating that "Echo" is its own show and doesn't require audiences to have seen a thousand other MCU projects to understand the narrative. It also means we'll be getting a lot more focus on character rather than events that occur simply to progress the overall MCU narrative. Pretty neat! Especially since we've had far too much MCU in recent years, and most of it has just been an excuse to set up whatever comes next in the saga.
Anyone who saw the "Echo" trailer will know this TV-ma series is a decidedly gritty affair, following in the footsteps of the original Marvel Netflix shows that were focused on "street-level" heroes rather than the grand spectacles of the MCU movies. In the trailer, Alaqua Cox's Maya Lopez/Echo,...

Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for Marvel’s “Echo” on Disney+.
Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appears in the very first episode of “Echo” on Disney+, and he’s instantly forgettable.
That’s not an indictment of the character Cox originated in “Marvel’s Daredevil” on Netflix, now resurrected for the MCU, but an endorsement of the scene around him; a one-shot combat sequence in which Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) eventually kills one of her opponents and marks Daredevil as an enemy.
The scene is striking enough on-screen, but also a key moment in how various teams intent on getting “Echo” right came together — the writing, the stunts, the direction, and an overarching sensitivity to a deaf character’s point of view.

The following contains spoilers for "Echo."
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is vast, which can make it difficult for various stories to stand apart or make their mark. The MCU shows on Disney+ have even more working against them, as there's so much TV out there that divesting people's attention can be difficult. For the latest entry in the MCU, "Echo," the series drew its greatest strength not from other comic books or even superhero cinema, but from another major franchise: "The Fast and the Furious."
While it may not be intentional, "Echo" mirrors "Fast and Furious" in the way Maya (Alaqua Cox) is aided by her extended family, including her estranged grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal), her cousins Biscuits (Cody Lightning) and Bonnie (Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs), her uncle Henry (Chaske Spencer), and her sorta-grandfather Skully (Graham Greene). This post contains spoilers for the Marvel Studios series "Echo."
Marvel's "Echo" has an uphill battle to gain audience attention. Not only is the Disney+ series from Marvel Studios arriving at a time when superhero fatigue appears to be high, but it's giving us a limited series about a secondary villain from the "Hawkeye" series, and on the surface, not one that demands the same attention as a character like Loki. However, audiences would do well to take a chance on the series, because where "Echo" succeeds is in making the character of Maya Lopez far more rich than her comic book origins.
Aside from the prominence of her Choctaw heritage, which is an integral part of the five-episode series that just debuted on Disney+, the fact that Maya Lopez is a deaf amputee makes her an even more compelling character who stands out from the usual superhero fare, especially since she's a recovering villain.

Marvel’s first Spotlight TV show ‘Echo’ has been released, and it was a character-driven action packed story following Maya Lopez. She is a little-known character in the comics, but now that she has been included in the MCU to such an extent, her popularity is bound to rise. What fans are mostly interested in, however, is whether Echo is a villain or a hero. We’ve seen her hurting some people who are traditionally considered good, but we’ve also seen her rising up against Kingpin. As always, the answer is complicated. Let’s see.
Article Breakdown:
Maya Lopez, aka Echo, is an anti-hero.
She cannot be considered a classical superhero due to her extreme anger and bloodlust. Superheros aren’t conventionally associated with such an extreme desire for vengeance.
However, once Maya has made her peace with her family, she can no longer be considered a villain. Yes,...

By default, Disney+ profiles have a content ratings threshold set to TV-14, giving account holders the ability to raise and lower it for individual profiles. This review contains major spoilers for all five episodes of Echo.
In 2021, Marvel Studios introduced the character of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) in Hawkeye. Lopez was the complex and violent right hand of New York crime lord Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio), but towards the end of that miniseries she came to realize that Fisk was behind the murder of her father, so she cornered him in a back street and shot him in the head.
After so decisively confronting Kingpin and freeing herself from his grip, you might wonder why both Cox and D’Onofrio are back in the five-episode spinoff series, Echo. The answer is that Maya apparently needed to confront Kingpin again and free herself from his grip, but this time in a more unsatisfying way than before. Marvel, I’m losing my mind.

These days, legacy can be a burden for television. Whether it’s the legacy of a beloved property poised to be bastardized via reboot, the legacy of a network or star, the legacy of a brilliant debut now hinging upon equal or better subsequent installment, there are legacies intertwined in too many new shows, hanging in the balance as studios and streamers churn out new stories.
But legacy doesn’t matter so much to Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) the lead of Marion Dayre’s “Echo,” now streaming in full on Disney+. Whether it’s her family, her employer, or the stories passed down to her as a child, Maya is more interested in forging her own path than appeasing various players around her. Like “Echo” itself, she stands alone and stands tall — distinct and imposing compared to any imitation.

Marvel’s new limited series, “Echo,” is deeply frustrating, a show with good intentions and poor aim. Ostensibly full of depth but never hitting the bullseye— seemingly about the complicated emotional agonies of families, adopted, found, and betrayed and the burdens of trauma—most of it is told without meaningful resonance. Placing its highest premium on violence and longwinded action—showy sequences that go on for six minutes, but so what?— while it considers much, “Echo” and actually has very little to say about any of it.

There were two prevailing takeaways from the "Hawkeye" series on Disney+. The first was that Florence Pugh makes everything better, even when all she does is show up and eat macaroni and cheese for a scene. The other was that Alaqua Cox's portrayal of the deaf Native American Tracksuit Mafia mercenary Maya Lopez was incredibly compelling and that the character herself was more than deserving of a spinoff series.
That's exactly what we're getting with "Echo," a series that follows Maya as she evades her crime boss "uncle" Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio), and his forces after that whole "shooting him" thing on "Hawkeye." The show's trailers have teased it as a return to the violent, so-called "street-level" drama of Marvel's Netflix series, complete with appearances by Fisk and a certain Devil of Hell's Kitchen. But more than that, "Echo" is about Maya reconnecting with her Native American...

Tonight, ‘Echo’ debuts on Disney+, marking a significant milestone for the MCU. It stands as the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show under the Marvel Spotlight banner, offering a unique entry point for viewers unfamiliar with the character. The narrative is character-driven, allowing audiences to engage without prior knowledge of related shows or movies. Notably, ‘Echo’ is the first Disney+ show to receive a TV-ma rating, attributed to its intense violence and themes.
Fans anticipate the excitement of Daredevil’s appearance and speculate on the importance of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in the series. ‘Echo’ diverges from the typical redemption story, showcasing Maya Lopez as a character who started as a villain and remains one throughout the show. Sydney Freeland, the director of ‘Echo,’ explained in a press conference the deliberate decision to take the series in a unique direction compared to other MCU projects.
