First episode of Denis O'Hare since Roanoke.
Near the end of the episode, Burleson asks Alma if the murders are the work of a cult or people with blood disease. While the mention of a cult might refer to the 2017 season of the series titled Cult, the "blood disease" line might be a reference to the 2015 season, Hotel, where the vampiric monsters of that season are the result of an ancient blood affliction. Similar to the "vampires" of this season, the vampires in Hotel needed to regularly feed on human blood.
Ursula refers to writers Hunter S Thompson and Charles Bukowski. Thompson is best known for founding the gonzo journalism movement and for his books Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Charles Bukowski was a prolific German American underground writer most well known for his book Ham On Rye and the screenplay for the movie Barfly. Though he was a bit of a cult hero, his work, which examined the depravity and the downtrodden through an unapologetic lens and was often based on his own experience, was controversial and considered offensive by many mainstream critics. More of his work (over 20 books of poetry) has been published posthumously, and he has since received more critical acclaim.
This is the first episode not to feature Sarah Paulson.
