Amy Roloff used to live in a huge house on Roloff farms, but she downsized after she sold it. She and Chris Marek lived in a modest home, by comparison, but they have a dream house in mind. In July last year, she said that she and her husband were actively looking for another home. Little People, Big World fans know that Chris dreams big, and his idea of a perfect home is a far cry from their current home. And, on Tuesday, TLC fans saw them tour their potential retirement home.

Gothic castles and faraway cabins are classic genre fare, but there’s something to be said for scary movies that tell stories about claustrophobic urban environments and the horrors of being isolated despite being surrounded by densely packed neighbors. Not only are these stories more relatable for big-city folks like myself, but they’re also uniquely positioned to deliver down-to-earth scares with a social twist.
And in honor of Evil Dead Rise brilliantly relocating the action to an LA apartment building, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the best Apartment Horror movies. After all, there’s nothing scarier than finding yourself trapped in a high rise with nowhere to go but down!
In the interest of keeping the list varied, we’ll be leaving out a few obvious entries like Candyman and Rosemary’s Baby, as I think we can assume that most of our readers have already seen these.

Dashed hopes lead to a kind of desperation without equal in Pang Ho-cheung’s movie Dream Home. This unmatched story satirizes Hong Kong’s housing bubble as well as imagines the undue sacrifices of one potential homebuyer. Not only does this character reject the red tape and systems standing in the way of her goal, she does so in the most grisly way imaginable.
The uninitiated will balk at the motive behind Cheng Lai-sheung’s (Josie Ho) murder spree in this splattery 2010 movie, but as the story unfolds, audiences do the unthinkable — they sympathize with a cold-blooded killer. Compassion doesn’t come easy in a movie as nonlinear and twisted as Dream Home, however, for every life Lai-sheung takes, a little more of her interiority is revealed. The tones start to clash as viewers are shuffled between the past and present, yet the tradeoff is a full-clad character.

After “Parasite” and “Squid Game” struck planet-wide notes with their critique of elitism, Trevor Choi’s “Smashing Frank” is a timely Hong Kong twist on the revenge-against-the-rich theme.
It is being pitched at the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf) that this week runs alongside the FilMart rights market.
“This is a comedy-drama about four millennials who form a squad to rob the rich. During the course of the crime, they are outraged as they gradually realize that the older generation will never change their ways. This motivates them to use stealing as their way of fighting back against the rich and the unkind,” says Choi of the project that is presented this week as part of the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf).
Hong Kong has long had a massive gulf between the super-rich and the poor and other films, including Josie Ho’s “Dream Home” and Fruit Chan’s more recent “Coffin Homes,...

Even before it was out of post production, Habit (not to be confused with the 2017 cannibal film of the same name), was stirring up controversy. According to Variety, it was the subject of a petition due to its casting. Specifically the casting of Paris, daughter of Michael, Jackson as a lesbian Jesus. Whether it was the product of legitimate outrage or a bit of marketing it certainly got Habit noticed. And since I’m reviewing it, it obviously didn’t stop its release. Although maybe it would have been better if it did rather than being responsible for it getting a distributor.

Exclusive: The Yellow Affair is launching world sales on drama In Every Dream Home for the Cannes Marché du Film.
The UK/U.S. co-production is set to star Dominique Jackson (Pose), Gaite Jansen (Peaky Blinders), David Arquette (Scream) and Louisa Krause (Billions).
UK filmmaker Louis Melville will direct the feature which will tell the story of a once famous trans woman called Bastet who now lives out her life in a small New York State coastal town which is closed up for winter. Bastet’s life takes a turn she hadn’t envisaged when she opens her home to a young woman who pretends to be something she is not. The movie questions the reality and truth of both Bastet, the fading trans woman star of Andy Warhol’s Factory, and Aggie, the young woman who comes to stay.

Hong Kong, as a place and symbol, has transformed over the last century. As first a British colony and then a Special Administrative Region in China, Hong Kong has retained its unique identity as a site where influences from the East and West intermingle to shape its iconic skyline. Nowhere is the indelible personality of Hong Kong architecture more evident than in its housing, itself the basis for countless classic Hong Kong films. While the topic may not be new, the question of what home looks like in Hong Kong, both for its citizens and its cinema, has gained newfound resonance in the 21st Century.
This question frames the presentation of Home in Hong Kong, a season highlighting various films from the last decade. Through different historical eras and wildly disparate genres, these films traverse from tenement housing to upscale penthouse apartments, to pose greater questions about how we define the word “home”. Above all,...

Another year, and another daunting challenge to keep up with the number of streaming options available from the big online players. And to mark January 1st, there’s some new content to enjoy on the likes of Netflix, Disney Plus and HBO Max, among others, as well as several notable changes in licensing agreements that may affect how you can watch your favorite shows.
On Netflix, the biggest fresh release is the third season of Cobra Kai, which has been a hit for the service since making the move from YouTube. Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. Other highlights, meanwhile, include Netflix documentary The Minimalists: Less Is Now, and a lot of licensed movies ranging from Bonnie and Clyde to Goodfellas.

The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Pang Ho-cheung, novelist, playwright, actor, and of course, director, has managed to carve a name for himself despite the growing hardships within the Hong Kong film industry. His style of comedy has allowed him to be a successful box office draw, his “love” series (started in 2010 with “Love in the Puff”) has been a crowd favourite, while films like “Vulgaria” have subtly critiqued the industry with outrageous satire and social commentary. “Women Who Flirt” sees Pang return to the world of rom-com, but can he capture the same magic as his much adored “Love” series?

The full list of everything that’s coming to Netflix in October has been released today and as we’re facing the prospect of a Halloween spent at home, the streaming site is making sure that we’ve got more than enough spooky content to keep us occupied. In fact, there’s a huge amount of new movies and TV shows arriving on the service next month as part of the “Netflix and Chills” season.
October 1st also delivers a lot of great newly licensed content, too, which you won’t want to miss. Sticking with the Halloween theme, though, the haul features a few horrors/thrillers including Cape Fear, House of 1000 Corpses and You Have Always Lived in the Castle. Then, on the 2nd, new original movie Vampires vs. the Bronx lands. And skipping ahead to the 7th, be sure to catch Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, Hubie Halloween.

We’re all trying to find ways to keep ourselves and/or our families/housemates engaged and entertained during this period of social distancing. Might I suggest a bit of horror?
Tor Books launched its own horror imprint, Nightfire Books, aimed at publishing fiction that “unsettles and delights, exploring the full range of horror, dark fantasy, and the supernatural” back in April. The imprint’s first publication is planned for early 2021, but that doesn’t mean it’s not putting out some chilling content in the meantime.
In February, Nightfire Books launched Come Join Us By the Fire, an audio-only anthology of 35 horror short stories available to listen to for free. The collection offers almost 10 hours of creepy content, is narrated by Gerard Doyle, Ramon de Ocampo, and Saskia Maarleveld, and includes some of our favorite authors, including Joe R. Lansdale, Paul Tremblay, Sam J. Miller, China Miéville, and Carmen Maria Machado.

Marcia Brady is heading back to Hgtv… Maureen McCormick, who played the eldest Brady daughter Marcia in the ABC comedy The Brady Bunch, is fronting Frozen in Time for the Discovery-owned network.
McCormick, who was one of the six surviving Brady Bunch cast members to appear in A Very Brady Renovation, will host another home renovation series for the network.
The show, which is set to air this spring, will see McCormick and designer Dan Vickery overhaul homes that are stuck in a design time warp. In each episode, Vickery will bring the structure up-to-date, while McCormick sources decade-specific pieces that will give the home a refreshed look and a wink to its original era.
This follows the ratings success of A Very Brady Renovation, which saw the original cast overhaul the house used in the sitcom’s exterior shots. That show launched in September after Hgtv purchased the Studio City house.

Hong Kong singer / actor / director / prodcer Juno Mak is – allegedly – about to release (after 5 years of writing and 1 year shooting) his sophomore directorial work, “Sons of a Neon Night” after the excellent homage to Hong Kong Jiangshi movies, “Rigor Mortis” of 2013. Mak is well known for his musical career and for acting in movies like “Dream Home” (2010) by Pang Ho-cheung and as the troubled protagonist (and writer) of “Revenge: A Love Story” (2010) by Wong Ching-Po.
The crime thriller “Sons of the Neon Night” – also written and produced by Juno Mak – is set for release in 2020. However, after revealing – at a press conference in 2017 – an intriguing two-minute behind-the-scene featurette, a batch of beautiful photo-stills and a teaser poster, we have lost tracks.

As an avid fan of both exploitation and documentary, I could not easily find anything better to watch than a documentary about Hk cinema’s Cat III movies. Even more so, since James Mudge, a personal friend of mine and author of one of the most detailed guides in the category participates in the film, along a number of experts, like the director Calum Waddell and Sean Tierney (aka Silver Spleen), some of the actual protagonists of the films of the category, like Anthony Wong and Josie Ho, and some of their directors, like Godfrey Ho, who talk about both Cat III and their personal experiences.
The documentary starts with the history of the category, tracing it, as usually in Hk cinema, in the productions of Shaw Brothers and the influence of Run Run Shaw that allowed him to “ignore” censorship. The film “Men Behind the Sun” however, is considered...

Josie Ho vows to master the art of calculated risk in the year 2019. As an actress and film producer, she is conscious of the choices of projects she makes: appearing in the new film by Japanese hotshot director Shinichiro Ueda, producing a new documentary feature while developing some 10 titles in the pipeline of 852Films, the company she co-founded and chairs. She wants the world to know that she dares to take risks for projects she believes in, but she is not to be taken advantage of, again.
She tells her story with new catchy rock tune “Shui Yu”, released just ahead of her band Josie & the Uni Boys’ April 6 concert The Classic Purple Psycho Experience. The song’s title, which literally means softshell turtle, is the Cantonese slang for people who always get taken advantage of, particularly financially. “It’s about me. It happens to me all the time,” Ho says.

With plenty of genre efforts already made, it would seem very few original ideas are left in the ground to unearth for zombie films yet the concept of mixing together ‘The Raid: Redemption’ with ‘Fight Club’ is certainly an intriguing mixture. Nowhere near as unique or creative as it could’ve been but still highly enjoyable nonetheless, this mashup from emerging Taiwanese genre director Joe Chien has a lot to like due to that.

“n 55!w !” this string of characters is the first thing that fills the cinema screen. It is an especially important moment, as only fans of this rom-com trilogy will feel a knowing nostalgic flutter stemming from those random letters, the seemingly unrelated horror story preceding the credits, and the in-depth intricacies and fleeting yet entirely memorable moments two fated lovers share, but, for the uninitiated, let’s go back. In 2009, Hong Kong auteur Pang Ho-Cheung introduced audiences to a quintessential Hong Kong couple Jimmy (Shawn Yue) and Cherie (Miriam Yeung). In the first film Love in a Puff, Pang uses a tool he has mastered already from previous directorial efforts (Men Suddenly in Black, Dream Home); critiquing Hk society, only this time for the...

Attention Hgtv lovers: #Brofreeze is the hashtag you didn’t know you needed.
Jonathan Scott, 38, took to Instagram on Tuesday to share a photo with his many fans. But it isn’t a beautifully made over room or a throwback snap of him and twin brother, Drew. It’s an unflattering screen grab of a face most other celebrities would probably like to forget they made on camera.

Look back at your childhood and how you imagined yourself as an adult, did you come even close to that expectation in reality? Sometimes in life we place our bar of expectation too high and thanks to the help of the economy, lack of the proper skills or our own bad choices in life those goals are impossible to meet.
Dream Home is all about one woman’s childhood goal of owning her dream home in a time when housing prices in Hong Kong are astronomical, the daily struggles she has to endure and the morbid measures she is willing to go to, to make her dream come true. If you like the typical blood, sex, occasional drug use with a humorous undertone at times in your slasher films, then this one is definitely for you.

A quick update for those of us (that would be most of us) awaiting the DVD debut of Rigor Mortis. The Hong Kong version, complete with English subtitles, goes on sale January 23, 2014. Best known for performances in Revenge: A Love Story and Dream Home, Juno Mak has turned his attention to directing, and judging by the quality of this sneak peak, there's a strong possibility he might be on to something. Starring Anthony Chan and Siu-hou Chin, Rigor Mortis is an effects-laden, but ultimately striking, horror debut from the Best Actor at the 2011 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On), and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic Mr Vampire series, Rigor Mortis is set in a haunted housing tower overrun by ghosts, vampires and zombies. Chin Siu-ho is a washed-up, former vampire hunting actor, down on his luck and penniless. He...

It sure seems like a lot of Asian horror films have to do with real estate in one way or another. I'm thinking specifically of the Grudge series from Japan and the rather excellent Dream Home (2010) from Hong Kong, but I'm certain there are several others. (Hey, I needed a clever opening.) And of course I brought up that first point because I have another solid import to add to the list: Korea's Hide and Seek, which comes from first-time writer/director Jung Huh, and was a pretty big hit in its native country.
Best described as a mystery/thriller that delves deeply into horror territory by the time the kinetically entertaining third act shows up, Hide and Seek ("Sum-bakk-og-jil" in Korean) starts out with a creepy little misdirection of a subplot that makes a lot more sense later on, but is mainly about a dour and fastidious middle-aged family...

Fans of early '90s-era gothic & industrial music will no doubt know the name of Athan Maroulis, co-founder of legendary dark electronic project Spahn Ranch. Relocating from Hollywood to his home turf of New York after Spahn disbanded in 2000, Maroulis has drawn creative inspiration from New York City for many projects – from the production of vintage jazz and blues recordings to a variety of gothic, synth-pop and electro-industrial acts including Razed in Black and Black Tape for a Blue Girl (of which he is an official member as of 2009). For his latest solo project Noir, Athan casts his creative light on the Big Apple once again, now filtered through a hauntingly romantic perspective that is equal parts '40s detective drama, vintage sci-fi and The Twilight Zone (he cites that show's creator Rod Serling as one of his inspirations), merged in a style he describes as “a dreamy death trip of sensuality.

Next, she'll star in The Apostles, which landed on our radar courtesy of 24fps. The poster art is eye-catching, if not a bit You're Next-ish. While we await more details on this project, check out the synopsis.

Although mainstream horror cinema has been slow to churn out titles, and as of late seems to have opted to focus primarily on remaking the classics of yesteryear, there are a vast quantity of low budget and independent horror films coming out every week. Due to limited means and the microscopic marketing budgets associated with independent filmmaking, it’s easy for quality films to slip through the cracks. In response, we created this recurring segment to explore some interesting horror movies that might have flown under your radar.
