Update 21/05/24: As confirmed on the latest edition of Richard Osman and Marina Hyde’s The Rest is Entertainment podcast, the latest cast member to be confirmed is Celia Imrie in the role of Joyce Meadowcroft. Joyce would love that, we feel.
As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

Exclusive: The story of a woman who was accused of murder after entering into a suicide pact with her terminally ill husband is being adapted for the screen in the UK.
Corestar Media has acquired the dramatic rights to Mavis Eccleston’s story, who took the agonizing decision to end her life alongside husband of six decades Dennis, who was in terrible pain from cancer.
The feature, Goodnight Darling, will follow how the 79-year-old Mavis was arrested and tried for murder, only to be unanimously found not guilty, and then began a campaign with her family to change the law to allow people to take the choice of assisted dying.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel author Deborah Moggach, whose mother served time in prison in an assisted dying case, has written a script. The story could be made as a film or a TV series, said a rep for UK drama indie Corestar.

Battered by disappointing markets at Toronto and AFM, both of which were held under the shadow of the actors strike, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM), which runs Feb. 15-21, to re-energize the indie business. The outlook, coming out of Sundance, is good.
“The difference in Sundance from last year to this was extreme, there were a lot more deals being down, both by distributors and streamers,” says Janina Vislmaier, head of sales at Protagonist Pictures, which screened The Outrun with Saoirse Ronan and Sasquatch Sunset with Riley Keough and Jesse Eisenberg in Park City, both of which will screen at the EFM. “Everyone is really excited ahead of Berlin, especially because all the buyers are back, including from Asia, which is a really good sign.”

Did you know Dev Patel has had a black belt since he was 16 years old? You probably will now after watching the first trailer for Monkey Man, a new gritty action spectacle which also happens to mark The Green Knight star’s directorial debut.
Indeed, the British born actor has enjoyed a respected career since his teenage years, beginning with the one-two punch of the TV series Skins in 2007 and the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire the year afterward. Both were impressive debuts that helped paved the way to an eclectic career which has included roles in movies like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Hotel Mumbai, The Personal History of David Copperfield, and Lion, the last of which earned Patel an Oscar nomination.
Yet it is intriguing to see Patel step behind the camera for the first time and reveal some of the type of movies that interest him—and others. After all,...

We have some very sad news to close out 2023, folks. Tom Wilkinson, one of the finest and most beloved character actors of this (or any other) generation, has died suddenly at 75. Deadline was the first to report the news. The twice Oscar-nominated co-star of Michael Clayton, Batman Begins, In the Bedroom, and many more films last appeared in Disney Plus’s sequel series to his breakout role in The Full Monty.
Between 1998 and 2018, Wilkinson was one of his generation’s most prolific character actors, with his output putting him up there with Brian Cox and Brendan Gleeson. He made over 65 movies and TV series in that twenty-year period, starring in everything from high-profile arthouse fare like Todd Field’s In the Bedroom to his role as Carmine Falcone in Batman Begins. He often played villains, such as in The Lone Ranger, but had the range to take on pretty much any part.

It was a found-footage-stylized microbudget horror pic that spawned a six film theatrical franchise that grossed over $890M, now Paranormal Activity is set to be a play.
Deadline has confirmed that Simon Friend, the producer of the Broadway version of Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, has taken the license on the Paramount/Blumhouse horror feature to set it up as a West End play.
Levi Holloway, the scribe of Broadway horror play Grey House, is currently writing Paranormal Activity for the stage.
Oren Peli wrote and directed the first pic, which centers around a family being haunted by a demon. The intrigue, much like the first Blair Witch Project, was the feeling that these horror movies could be real.
Friend’s stage adaptation productions include those of such pics The Da Vinci Code and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Life of Pi won five Olivier Awards and three Tonys.

Get ready for Paranormal Activity, the stage play.
Simon Friend, the veteran producer who brought Life of Pi to Broadway, has picked up the license to the Paramount horror movie series with the intent of bringing it to the West End via his Simon Friend Entertainment.
Levi Holloway, who wrote the horror-tinged Broadway play Grey House, is on board to pen the stage adaptation, which is described as being in early development.
Created by Oren Peli, who wrote, directed, and shot the initial installment, Paranormal is a horror movie series focused, in most outings, on a family terrorized by a demon. The bulk of them were made between 2009 and 2015. The movies capitalized on the growing proliferation of video and cellphone cameras to tell spooky and jump-scare-filled tales to great effect.

Since making his screen acting debut on “The Cosby Show” at age 21, Adam Sandler has built a reputation as a timelessly popular comedic performer with such resume highlights as “Happy Gilmore,” “50 First Dates,” and “Grown Ups,” not to mention his successful five-season stint on “Saturday Night Live.” He has also continually proven his dramatic chops over the past two decades as the star of “Punch-Drunk Love,” “Reign Over Me,” and “Uncut Gems,” the last of which brought him the most positive notices of his career just three years ago. Now, he is in the running for his first Screen Actors Guild Award based on his work in the sports drama film “Hustle.”
For the first time since 2015, all five of this year’s Best Film Actor SAG Award nominees are new to the category. Sandler and concurrent Best Ensemble contender Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) are the only...

After a career that’s spanned over 30 years, Brendan Fraser has finally scored his first individual nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his portrayal of Charlie, an immensely obese online teacher in Darren Aronofsky’s film “The Whale.” While the Best Actor nomination may be his first individual one, it’s not his first time at the SAG Awards. 17 years ago, he won the Best Cast in a Motion Picture prize for being part of the ensemble of “Crash,” which would later claim the Oscar for Best Picture.
Like Fraser, all of his fellow nominees in the lead actor category are celebrating their first individual SAG nomination: Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Bill Nighy (“Living”) and Adam Sandler (“Hustle”). Farrell has a corresponding nomination for Best Cast for “Banshees” and both Butler and Nighy have received previous nominations in that category as well. Butler...

At the age of 73 and after working as an actor for nearly five decades, Bill Nighy has finally earned his first individual nomination at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Nighy is nominated for Best Actor for his performance as government bureaucrat, Rodney Williams, in Oliver Hermanus’s film “Living.” He was nominated for Best Cast in a Motion Picture for being part of the ensemble in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” in 2012.
Like Nighy, all the other nominees in the Best Actor category are making their first appearance as individual nominees: Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Adam Sandler (“Hustle”). Fraser won a SAG Award for Best Cast as part of the ensemble of “Crash” in 2005 and Butler was also nominated in that category for “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood” in 2019.

A quarter century and more than 50 film and TV appearances into his acting career, Colin Farrell has finally landed both his first individual and ensemble Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. This dual recognition comes for his lead performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which marks his third film collaboration with writer-director Martin McDonagh, following 2008’s “In Bruges” and 2012’s “Seven Psychopaths.” If he succeeds on his solo bid, he will be the first Irish actor to ever win this or any individual SAG Award.
Like Farrell, all four of the other men in contention for this year’s Best Film Actor SAG Award had never been nominated in the category before. Adam Sandler (“Hustle”) is the only other total SAG newcomer in the bunch, as Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”), and Bill Nighy (“Living”) each previously received one Best Film Ensemble nomination. At the second annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1996, 32-year-old Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) supplanted inaugural Best Film Actor recipient Tom Hanks and became the category’s youngest winner. Although his standing has been threatened in recent years by Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”), Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me By Your Name”), and Daniel Kaluuya (“Get Out”), the record remains intact nearly three decades later. This year, however, he could finally be knocked down a spot on the list if Austin Butler (31) succeeds on his freshman solo bid for “Elvis.”
Butler is part of only the seventh Best Actor lineup in SAG Awards history to exclusively consist of newcomers to the category. He does have one Best Film Ensemble nomination under his belt, as do two of his competitors: Brendan Fraser and Bill Nighy. If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

For the first ten years of his career, Bill Nighy trod the boards in the U.K. He never saw a camera. He figured he’d be a theater actor for the rest of his life. In that time, just a few British stars were in the movies: Albert Finney, Michael Caine, Tom Courtenay, Peter O’Toole. “I was perfectly content,” he told me on Zoom. “I didn’t imagine I’d ever be on television particularly, or certainly not in a film. It was different times. My expectations were low, because I never expected to be an actor. And I never expected to be paid money for doing plays.”
Nighy’s world shifted when the late great casting director Mary Selway snuck him into a reading for Richard Curtis’ Christmas comedy “Love, Actually.” He got a couple of laughs. And landed the role of aging pop star Billy Mack, who...

The much-beloved British character Bill Nighy, who turns 73 on December 12, just might earn his first Oscar nomination for a rare lead role as a career diplomat in “Living.” The film is adapted from a screenplay based on the 1952 film “Ikiru,”directed by Akira Kurosawa. Nighy plays Mr. Williams, a stodgy bowler-wearing London diplomat who is part of a team that slashes its way through a wall of bureaucracy. He then learns he has a terminal disease and only has weeks to live. Thanks to his closest work ally and friend Margaret (Aimee Lou Wood), he finds a way to give back to the community he has served as he leaves behind a special gift of a playground.
While Nighy has been in the running for other acting prizes on film, stage and TV, it’s about time that this icon of British cinema deserves to get for a little gold man.

“Black Adam,” a comic book adventure starring Dwayne Johnson, will loom large over the weekend box office.
The film, from Warner Bros. and DC Comics, is expected to generate 60 million or more from 4,350 North American theaters between Friday and Sunday. That’ll easily be enough to dethrone “Halloween Ends,” which took the No. 1 spot last weekend with 41 million.
“Black Adam” is squaring off against “Ticket to Paradise,” a romantic comedy featuring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, which is aiming to generate 15 million from 3,500 cinemas in its box office debut.
“Black Adam,” which cost a mighty 195 million to produce, isn’t going to break any records in the comic book realm. And it’ll certainly need a long life on the big screen to justify that price tag. But the movie does look to inject a little sizzle in the otherwise sluggish October at the box office. There hasn’t been...

Some people make the impossible look easy. Genuine charm among actors is hard enough to come by, let alone finding two actors who have actual chemistry with each other. But if you have ever seen Steven Soderbergh's "Ocean's Eleven" or its equally excellent sequels, you know that those three films are overburdened with genuinely charming actors who all seem to have chemistry with each other. It's hard not to think of one specific scene from Soderbergh's 2001 remake — in which the hero tries and fails to reconnect with his ex-wife while sharing tartly written barbs — when watching the new romantic comedy "Ticket to Paradise," seeing as the two films feature the same stars. Yes, this light new comedy reunites George Clooney and Julia Roberts, two true movie stars in a high-concept, a low-key comedy set in a beautiful tropical setting. It all seems like it should be so easy, which...
