Denis Villeneuve recently told The Times of London that “movies have been corrupted by television.” His opinion comes from his growing desire to make a movie without any dialogue.
“Frankly, I hate dialogue,” the filmmaker told the publication. “Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I’m not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today. Movies have been corrupted by television.”
“Because TV had that golden age and execs thought films should copy its success?” The Times asked Villeneuve, to which he answered: “Exactly.”
“In a perfect world, I’d make a compelling movie that doesn’t feel like an experiment but does not have a single word in it either,” he continued. “People...

It isn’t every day that you hear about a director who was once involved with a project just straight up deciding to leave out of the blue but it certainly has happened in the past. With great power comes great responsibility. Canal+ Group has received the conditional approval from the anti-trust board to acquire Orange Studio and Ocs, the film and pay TV operations of Orange, France’s leading telco group.
Canal+ has committed to a number of remedies for an initial duration of five years in order to get the regulatory green light and address concentration concerns.
The acquisition of Ocs by Canal+ could have large ramifications on the local film industry because both players represent the top two sources of pre-financing for French movies. Canal+ is currently on a three-year deal (until the end of 2024) with film guilds to invest an average of €200 million per year in French and European cinema. Ocs, meanwhile, has a deal with producers to invest €20 million annual investment in local pics.

You might hear the title, Driving Madeleine (French title: Une Belle Course), and then read the logline about a driver taxiing a 92-year old woman around Paris and instantly think “Aha! It is a French Driving Miss Daisy!” Well, having absolutely nothing to do with that 1989 Best Picture Oscar winner that so memorably starred Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman, the two films do have something in common. They are both irresistibly cast with exceptional veteran stars who each grab the heart and never let go.

Florian Zeller‘s melodrama The Son had its world premiere in September 2022 at the 79th Venice International Film Festival. Until its wide release in the first quarter of 2023 (following a limited theatrical release in late 2022), The Son had mostly flown under the radar. Part of the reason it bombed at the Box Office could be as a result of poor marketing. Its Hugh Jackman-led cast and its explored themes could have been a great marketing attraction if better attention had been given to it. In the end, Despite its below-average critical ratings and failing in many areas where...

Ridley Scott may be 85 years old but the prolific filmmaker behind such classics as "Alien" and "Gladiator" is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. After releasing both "House of Gucci" and "The Last Duel" in 2021, Scott is back with a new film in the form of "Napoleon." Produced by Apple Studios, the film reunites the Oscar-winning filmmaker with fellow Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix ("Joker"), with the actor playing the title role as the famed French military leader. The question is, can the duo ride to box office glory on the back of this pricey historical epic?

Sony Pictures Classics will release “Freud’s Last Session” in New York and Los Angeles theaters on Dec. 22, 2023, followed by an expansion nationwide in January.
The late-in-the-year limited release date with a nationwide release at the first of the new year points to a studio potentially feeling good about a movie’s Oscar chances.
And given the star wattage, subject matter and the fact that it is based on a play, could “Freud’s Last Session” be a secret Academy Awards powerhouse?
The movie stars Anthony Hopkins and Matthew Goode and is directed by Matt Brown, with a screenplay courtesy of Mark St. Germain, based on a play of the same name (also written by St. Germain).
The official plot synopsis reads: “On the eve of the Second World War, two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, Sigmund Freud (Hopkins) and C.S. Lewis (Goode), converge for their own personal battle over the existence of God.

Fred Kogel, CEO of leading German film and TV group Leonine Studios, which distributes the “Expendables” and “John Wick” movies in Germany, made the case for a new generation of action stars during the Zurich Summit over the weekend, where he was presented with Zurich Film Festival’s Game Changer Award.
He noted that many of today’s action stars are the same ones he watched on the big screen back in the 1980s, among them Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Harrison Ford and Tom Cruise.
Action movie fans identified with these actors because they could believe they were doing their own stunts, he added. There was “a great deal of identification with the type of the actor, with the physicality of the actor, so you could relate to that.”
By contrast, in modern CGI-laden superhero movies, “the younger generation doesn’t even know who does what.”

While the field has been around for the last decade, Venice’s Collateral Impact Award, which was created in partnership with ThinkFilm Impact Production, is the first time an impact-specific award is being presented at an A-list festival.
“This is an industry first — it’s not been seen anywhere,” ThinkFilm Impact Production founder and CEO Danielle Turkov Wilson told Variety. “I’ve been working at Cannes at the industry level for years, but to see something like this at the competition level is wonderful.”

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes are continuing with no end in sight. Actors and writers are asking for a larger, but still reasonable slice of the residual pie and better protections against the intrusion of artificial intelligence into movies and TV, as streaming continues to change nearly every facet of home entertainment.
TV schedules haven’t been impacted much by the dual strikes yet, though some studios are preparing for that eventuality by lining up heretofore cable or streaming-exclusive titles for broadcast on network TV. Movie slates are a different story, as Sony has announced that it would be delaying a variety of titles bound for theaters because of the work stoppages.
From a streaming perspective, those delays will be felt by Netflix customers first. Netflix has had a Pay-1 deal in place with Sony...

This week we visit French director Xavier Gens’s Thailand-set fight-fest Farang, which has shown independent French action movies can hold their own in cinemas and find international buyers. Released against a real-life background of fury towards the police following the killing of a French teenager during a traffic stop in June, the film has shown there remains an appetite for genre movie in the country.

Hey, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" fans. We're back to let you know that ABC will unfortunately have to serve up another slew of repeat episodes for the Jimmy Kimmel Live show all this week, July 24-28,2023 due to the ongoing WGA writers strike. As we previously reported, the actors also joined them because they're having some of the same issues with the studios. The most recent update for it is that the studios aren't even in talks with the writers or actors unions right now. So, this Hollywood strike could last a pretty good while. With that said, ABC did put out a press release that reveals which repeat episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live that ABC is airing tonight. So, we're going to run it by you right now. Let's get to it. Tonight July 24, 2023, ABC is going to re-air the episode that originally aired back on January 5, 2023. It featured appearances...

See-Saw Films has unveiled first look images for James Hawes’ “One Life,” which will receive its world premiere as a TIFF special presentation in September.
Written by Lucinda Coxon and Nick Drake, the film is based on the book, “If it’s not impossible… The life of Sir Nicholas Winton” by Barbara Winton.
It tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London banker who, on the eve of World War II, saved 669 children from the Nazis – more than the number of children who survived the Holocaust in Czechoslovakia. With war fast approaching, Winton visited a recently annexed Prague and witnessed first-hand Jewish refugee families with little to no shelter and food. He immediately realized it was a race against time to see how many children he and his friends could rescue before time ran out. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of...

Before we get to the movies, it’s quite notable that Arnold Schwarzenegger made his debut on the streamer in a rare live action series called “Fubar,” created by Nick Santora (“Scorpion”), which debuted atop the English TV list with 88.9 million hours viewed, easily the most-viewed series of the week. It entered the Top 10 in 90 countries and was the #1 watched series in the United States, Canada and dozens of other countries across the globe.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) has grossed triple what “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) has in theaters. But for home viewers, the latest Keunu Reeves action sequel booted the Nintendo game animated film out of all #1 VOD rankings after only one week.
Impressively, this was not only on iTunes and Google Play (which rank by number of transactions) but also Vudu, which tallies by revenue. “Wick” costs the standard $19.99 to view, while “Smb” is $24.99 ($29.99 to own). That suggests at that site at least it had a clear lead for the week. Meantime, “Smb” is a unanimous #2.
At Netflix, the success of recent Sony titles continues to be seen among their most viewed movies. The studio, lacking its own streaming site, now regularly sends its films there a few months after release. “Missing” continues at #1, but the surprise this week has been the success of “The Son.”

Michelle Yeoh is looking back on watching everything in competition at Cannes all at once while serving on the jury under then-president David Lynch in 2002.
Yeoh reflected on the particularly “emotional” year of films, ranging from Gaspar Noé’s jarringly violent sexual thriller “Irréversible” to Michael Moore’s school shooting documentary “Bowling for Columbine” and films like Olivier Assayas’ sex-trafficking mystery “Demonlover” and the Dardennes’ drama “The Son.” The Palme d’Or was eventually awarded to “The Pianist,” the harrowing Holocaust drama starring Adrien Brody and directed by Roman Polanski — who both went on to win Oscars.
Yeoh, who was fresh off of her iconic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” role, served as part of the 2002 Cannes jury at a time when she admitted she may have been “too young” to refrain from getting “too emotional” watching the heavier films back-to-back.

With six of the top eight film distributors committed to their own streaming sites — and all the expenses that come with them — the two studios that operate without a streamer continue to elevate home viewing without that heavy investment.
Universal has three films occupying eight positions this week, led by the just-released “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” that’s #1 on all three VOD charts. Lionsgate also has three films in eight slots, while Sony has three films in six slots — plus, three more films in the Netflix top 10.
Multiple placements aren’t unusual for Universal; it has high volume as well as a consistent PVOD policy that often sees titles surface in a month or less. For the scrappier Lionsgate, this achievement demanded a lot of smart strategy. Both “Operation Fortune: Russe de Guerre” and “Sisu” showed limited interest in theaters (each grossed around $7 million). Yet each has shown strength on PVOD,...

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have been entertaining fans for over a decade with their ongoing faux feuds.
Since the two met on set of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”, they’ve grown to become close friends, giving fans countless reasons to laugh as their beef continues to escalate to date.
According to Jackman, here’s how the pair’s online flame war began.
“I met [Reynolds] back on [‘X-Men Origins] Wolverine’, and I used to ream him because I was very close friends with Scarlett [Johansson], and Scarlett had just married Ryan, so when he came on set I was like, ‘Hey, you better be on your best behaviour here, pal, because I’m watching,’ and we started ribbing each other that way,” he told Daily Beast back in 2020.

Gurinder Chadha's coming-of-age comedy hits all the right notes - and not just in terms of its Bruce Springsteen soundtrack. It's 1987 and Javed has high hopes of being a writer. When a friend (Aaron Phagura) turns him on to The Boss, Javed becomes his No.1 fan and.uses the music for inspiration. Underpinned by the engaging memoir by Sarfraz Manzoor, from which it is adapted, this is a pacy consideration of teenage life of the period that tackles more serious considerations of the racism and prejudice of the period lightly but effectively.
The Son, Amazon Prime
Anne-Katrin Titze writes: The center of Florian Zeller’s intergenerational drama, The Son, adapted from his play Le Fils by Christopher Hampton, is occupied by a cypher. Nicholas (Zen McGrath) is 17 and lives with his mother Kate in Brooklyn.
