While Hollywood writers are back at work, media companies have suspended negotiations with striking actors over a new contract. When the sumptuously filmed 1920s drama Hotel Portofino returns, the sunny skies of Italy’s Riviera mirror the mood of Bella Ainsworth (Natascha McElhone), proud owner of the upscale title hostelry. She’s promoted former nanny Constance (Louisa Binder) to assistant manager and befriended appealing architect Marco (Giorgio Marchesi), who’s building the hotel’s spa. But dark clouds hover, starting with the reappearance of Bella’s dodgy and unfaithful husband, Cecil (Mark Umbers). He’s been in London since he struck his wife in Season 1. “It’s forced her to confront a lot of things that have been bubbling below the surface and this is sort of the breakdown of their marital relationship, though it’s not easy for Bella,” says creator Matt Baker. “We’re introducing this season, the possibility of life and relationships for Bella after Cecil,” he adds, hinting at a “chaste” love interest for Bella.

When Natascha McElhone got her big break as an actor, she very nearly blew it. She was fresh out of drama school and appearing in Richard III at the Open Air Theatre in London’s Regent’s Park. It was pouring with rain one evening and, though McElhone didn’t know it, the writer and director James Ivory, of Merchant Ivory fame, had come to watch the show. On a recent visit to Serbia, actor John Malkovich announced plans to team up with fellow leading men D.W. Moffett and Matt Dillon to build a state-of-the-art film, music and media production facility in neighboring North Macedonia, a small, mountainous country of just two million inhabitants.
It might seem a risky gambit for a country with a modest domestic film industry that services few foreign shoots. But Malkovich – a self-described “son of the Balkans” whose father is of Croatian descent – insisted that the studios have the potential to transform film and television production in the region. Dubbed Stonebridge Studios, the project now awaits approval from the government of the ex-Yugoslavian republic, which according to the studio’s backers stands to gain €1.6 billion (1.6 billion) in Gdp as international productions flock to the country.
While the backing of an A-list celeb ensured the announcement would raise hopes – and eyebrows – across the region,...

Terms of a deal on pay and working conditions likely to spillover to indie film
UK independent film producers are closely watching for the outcome of negotiations about pay and working conditions in scripted TV between producers’ organisation Pact and creative industries union Bectu.
Many fear the already difficult job of financing and making independent films will become even harder if the cost of hiring crew rises significantly.
Pact and Bectu are in negotiations to update their collective UK Independent Television TV Drama Agreement. Although they are negotiating a scripted TV deal, the terms often cascade down to agreements in independent film.

Assad Zaman is the latest actor to join the cast of AMC's upcoming "Interview with the Vampire" series. Zaman, who recently co-starred in the 6-episode British period drama, "Hotel Portofino" (coming to PBS in the U.S.) will play the character Rashid. If that name doesn't ring a bell, it might be because Rashid did not appear in the 1994 film adaptation of Anne Rice's original "Interview with the Vampire" novel.
This new adaptation of "Interview with the Vampire" for AMC and AMC+ stars Jacob Anderson, Sam Reid, and Bailey Bass as Louis, Lestat, and Claudia, respectively -- the characters played by Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and a young...

German sellers returning to Cannes’s Mipcom TV mart will be packing a wide selection of domestic and international TV fare heavy on high-end crime and historical series.
With a market that has become increasingly open to different formats, sales companies see good opportunities for diverse offerings.
“Crime is still the most in- demand genre in the market, as well as action,” says Julia Weber, head of international sales and acquisitions at Munich-based Global Screen. “But whatever genre you look at, the main driver remains the story. It needs to be compelling and speak to the audience.”
Weber adds that more and more historical dramas are also being produced, underscoring “an increasing need for series that are rather escapist and that cater to audiences in the post-lockdown world.”
