Andy Serkis gained critical acclaim for his role as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Serkis made a name for himself in motion capture soon after he did the role of Gollum. While the actor was praised for his incredible performance in the role, he was not admired by all.
Andy Serkis shared that there were many people including some older actors from the industry who mocked him when the first movie in the Lotr trilogy came out.
Andy Serkis as Gollum
The role of Gollum changed the world of CGI and motion capture forever. It led Serkis to more motion capture performances like King Kong and Caesar in The Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy. However, it is sad that the actor initially turned into a joke when Gollum first appeared in 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Update: Well, that didn’t take long. Apparently, the first new Lord of the Rings movie we’ll be seeing from WB will be a Gollum spin-off feature starring Andy Serkis, who will also direct. The film, which is called Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set for 2026, and in addition to Serkis, the film will also boast a screenplay by original Lotr writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Peter Jackson will produce. Here’s the official release from WB (via Deadline):
“For over two-decades, moviegoers have embraced the Lord of the Rings film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision. We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films.

The legacy of the great writer J.R.R. Tolkien lives on, but not all of its manifestations are equally successful. After mixed (mostly negative and neutral) reviews of The Rings of Power, it became known that several projects in Tolkien's universe are being planned, but the project that currently attracts the most attention and hopes of fans is full-length anime – The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
What Will The Anime Be About?
The upcoming project tells the story of Helm Hammerhand and the defense of the fortress of Hornburg in Helm's Deep.
The events described above were precipitated by the murder of Freca, the ruler of the lands of the Dunlendings. At one of the councils, he asked for the hand of King Rohan's daughter for his son, to which Helm responded only with ridicule. Then Freca, enraged by the refusal, insulted the king and began to threaten him.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter was supposed to be 2024’s second Spider-Man-adjacent film. However, the studio is trying to put as much space between it and Madam Web as possible. Kraven is just barely staying in the calendar year.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the comic book villain, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been moved from August 30 to December 13. The Karate Kid previously held this date. Sony has since moved that reboot to May 30, 2025.
Karven the Hunter isn’t being moved due to production delays; it has been ready to go for a while. The latest Spidey adversary flick was initially slated to debut last October. Sony decided against this since the actor’s strike would have left the movie without a cast to talk it up in the press.

Kraven the Hunter is seeking new hunting grounds, with the Aaron Taylor-Johnson starrer taking a release date just vacated by The Karate Kid.
On Friday evening, Sony moved the villain-centric Kraven the Hunter to the prime winter spot of Dec. 13, 2024 (back from Aug. 30, 2024). Kraven steps into a date that was occupied by fellow Sony pic The Karate Kid, a crossover event movie starring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Karate Kid now moves to May 30, 2025.
The move comes after the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, the Netflix spinoff starring Machio as his original Karate Kid movie character Daniel Larusso, was delayed due to last year’s actors strike. Sony pushed the new Karate Kid to allow it to follow Cobra Kai‘s final season, with the summer date also seen as friendly for the all-ages audience its intended for. What is the best trilogy of all time? Fans might immediately jump to George Lucas' original "Star Wars" trilogy or maybe Christopher Nolan's more recent Dark Knight trilogy. The more prestige audiences might pull out "The Godfather" trilogy, even if the final chapter doesn't match up to the quality of the first two installments (especially since Francis Ford Coppola revisited them with a superior cut of the final chapter). The indie crowd may put forth Richard Linklater's "Before" trilogy with Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy's evolving love story. But honestly, there's really only one answer that makes sense.
Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is the greatest motion picture trilogy of all time. An incredible feat of blockbuster filmmaking and a box office phenomenon, all three movies were shot back-to-back in one of the biggest risks ever taken by a Hollywood studio on a largely untested filmmaker.

This is a stacked weekend for movies that could get awards attention but probably won’t, both in theaters and on digital platforms. First up is a lively ode to one of cinema’s musical masters.
The contender to watch this week: “Ennio”
Giuseppe Tornatore‘s documentary about influential composer Ennio Morricone has been a long time coming, and not only because Morricone’s career dates back to 1946. “Ennio” premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in 2021 and was released in Italy in 2022. But don’t take its delayed domestic debut as a bad omen: The movie is a spellbinding tribute to the two-time Oscar winner, who wrote the scores for “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” “Days of Heaven,” “The Untouchables,” “The Hateful Eight,” and Tornatore’s own “Cinema Paradiso.” The talking heads include Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, and Bruce Springsteen. The Joker and Harley Quinn are set to serenade audiences in “Joker: Folie à Deux,” but if, and how many original songs will be included in the film, is a mystery.
Insiders privy to filming and early versions of Todd Phillips’ eagerly awaited sequel to “Joker” tell Variety the movie leans heavily towards being “mostly a jukebox musical,” as it integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs. One is said to be “That’s Entertainment” from the 1953 musical “The Band Wagon,” famously associated with Judy Garland. However, there is a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version. Details regarding who would pen the tracks, or sing the numbers are unknown. We do know, according to sources, Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first “Joker” film, is said to “infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number. Warner Bros declined to comment.

“Lord of the Rings” owner Embracer revealed its Q3 results were boosted by licensing revenue from the Tolkien IP despite being lower than expected overall.
Embracer, a Swedish gaming conglomerate who snapped up the rights to “Lord of the Rings” two years ago, has undergone a severe restructuring program over the past year, which has seen the company shut down or dispose of dozens of games studios and titles and lay off hundreds of staff, resulting in aftershocks that have reverberated throughout the games industry.
Its latest report, published Thursday, the company revealed it had cut 8% of its global workforce. That number likely does not include those working on a freelance basis.
Despite this, Wingefors admitted the company is unlikely to reach its target of lowering its net debt to Sek 8 billion ($761 million) by March 31. He warned that Embracer still has “a few larger structured divestment processes ongoing that could strengthen our balance sheet.

Fresh off of being delayed until 2024, Dune: Part Two is Empire Magazine‘s new cover story. The outlet will print two gorgeous Dune Part Two Empire Magazine covers for fans to collect, featuring House Atreides and Harkonnen members. Yesterday, Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. said they would push the release of Dune: Part Two, with the film now coming to theaters on March 15, 2024.
This change in release date has caused a knock-on effect. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was set to be released on March 15, 2024, but will now move to April 12, 2024. That is the date that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim was supposed to be released, which will now be pushed to December 13, 2024. The reason for the Dune: Part Two delay is said to be because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, as the studio clearly wants its stars to be able to promote the movie.

The reason for the Dune: Part Two delay is said to be because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, as the studio clearly wants its stars to be able to promote the movie.

Los Angeles, Aug 25 (Ians) The upcoming sequel to ‘Dune’, ‘Dune: Part 2’ has been facing uncertainty regarding its release ever since the beginning of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, however while the possibility of it being delayed was seeming unlikely day by day, the movie has now been delayed to 2024.
Furthermore, as some of the crew of ‘Dune 2’ are themselves part of the strikes, and some of the cast such as Zendaya are giving their support to it, the movie can no longer go ahead with any more promotions, becoming another hot target in the recent slew of Warner Brothers projects, and Hollywood features in general to get massively delayed.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Denis Villeneuve’s big budget sequel was slated to open on November 3, 2023 in North America before globally hitting theatres on November 17, 2023.

The prophecy has been fulfilled. After rumours that Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. would push the release of Dune: Part Two, the studio has officially announced that it will be doing just that. Dune: Part Two was slated to hit theaters on November 3rd, but will now be released on March 15, 2024.
This change in release date has caused a little bit of a domino effect. Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was previously set to be released on March 15, 2024, but will now move to April 12, 2024. New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

With “Succession” now over, it’s time for Brian Cox to find a new major role. Recently, he’s kept busy with smaller indie pics like “Mending The Line,” “Prisoner’s Daughter,” as well as “The Independent” on Peacock. And in the next couple of years, he’ll star in The Russo Bros.‘ “The Electric State” on Netflix and provide voice work for “The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim.” But EW reports there’s something on Cox’s acting wishlist before he “snuffs it,” as he puts it on Variety’s “Actors On Actors” interview: he really wants to work with Meryl Streep.

This year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival looks to break records with a wider international reach and greater studio participation than ever before. Already set to overtake last year’s attendance, the French lakeside fest, runs June 11-17 and had run up 13,300 guests by late May — among them a U.S. delegation more than 700 strong.
“[This year marks] the most important U.S. presence ever at Annecy,” says artistic director Marcel Jean. “We’re taking in historical players such as Disney, DreamWorks and Pixar who will still come, as well as global platforms such as Netflix, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery. And [we’re welcoming] a number of big titles.”
Disney, celebrating its 100th anniversary over the course of the year, plans a special screening of “Fantasia 2000” before offering Annecy’s famously boisterous and youthful crowd a first look at the upcoming animated musical “Wish.” Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Kathryn Newton, Angus Cloud and Will Catlett have joined the cast of Universal’s untitled monster movie. The film, announced last month, will be directed by Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who recently revived the “Scream” franchise and previously helmed the cult favorite “Ready or Not.” They will join previously cast Melissa Barrera and Alisha Weir in the mysterious fright flick, which now has a theatrical release date of April 19, 2024.
Chad Villella will produce alongside William Sherak, Paul Neinstein and James Vanderbilt at Project X Entertainment. The script was written by Stephen Sheilds, with revisions by Guy Busick. That release date puts it a week after Warner Bros. Discovery’s animated “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” and two weeks before Marvel’s “Captain America: New World Order.”

Prime Video today announced the acquisition of two new DC animated Batman series, alongside an original animated film from Warner Bros. Animation and DC. The film Merry Little Batman is ordered with a spinoff series, Bat-Family, along with a two-season order for Batman: Caped Crusader, from executive producers Bruce Timm, J J Abrams, and Matt Reeves. The Batman animated titles will premiere exclusively on Prime Video.

Animation to offer a variety of takes of the Batman mythos to our global Prime Video customers.”

Blockbuster franchises have been around for decades, but it feels as if Hollywood has never been quite as enthusiastic about its popular properties. From "Star Wars" to "Harry Potter" to "The Lord of the Rings," Hollywood seems obsessed with bringing back older, successful IPs, continuing their stories, and building on their universes for as long as they remain profitable. Depending on who you ask, that's either a cynical interpretation of the current state of cinema or a geek's childhood dream come true. If that person is Elijah Wood, it's a little bit of both, and there's enough room for authentic creativity so long as artists are those same types of geeks.
Wood is referring to Warner Bros. Discovery's plans to produce more "Lord of the Rings" movies, a move that reflects a larger push from major studios to promote their brand with big-name, recognizable IPs. Similarly, Warner Bros. has...

Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are ramping up their next acts at Netflix.
Ten days after announcing an animated series set within the Stranger Things universe, the Duffer brothers have scored a series order for The Boroughs, a sci-fi drama from The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance duo Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews.
The project, which was first announced last July as part of their nine-figure overall deal with the streamer, is based on an original idea from Addiss and Matthews. The Boroughs takes place in a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert and, like Stranger Things, revolves around a group of unlikely heroes who must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have: time.

Tolkien-inspired mythology has taken over our screens while a treasure chest of epic fantasy tales lies unused
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King will be back in North American cinemas next month, to celebrate 20 years since Peter Jackson first debuted his Oscar-winning film. Its return to the multiplexes comes at a time when we seem to have more Jrr Tolkien-inspired fantasies to choose from than a 1980s branch of Games Workshop. As well as Gollum and co returning to the big screen, we have the baffling, utterly superfluous yet sumptuously filmed and geekily delightful small screen The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV show. Then next year there will be The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated venture with Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand and Jackson alumnus Miranda Otto as Eowyn (who will take the narrator’s role...

Last month, it was announced that HBO’s Succession would be ending after four seasons. That’s a relatively short run considering two of its three seasons so far have won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. After the news broke, some of the core cast members began speaking out. Now, it’s Brian Cox’s turn to give his take on the end of Succession.
Characteristically, Brian Cox was rather curt on the topic of Succession ending. “I’ll miss the cast, I’ll miss the atmosphere, I’ll miss the bonhomie…Logan, probably, I’ll miss a bit. But upward and onwards,” he told Variety. Onward and upward is definitely the way the 76-year-old actor is going, with a number of projects already lined up, including voicing a character in the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

With almost a decade’s wait, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Animation are set to release a new Lotr film, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The film is another adaptation of J. R. R Tolkien’s fantasy world. The last time film fantasy viewers got a sneak peek into Tolkien’s Middle-earth was in 2014, with the release of the final installment of The Hobbit trilogy. The War of the Rohirrim was already planned and is separate from the deal announced in 2023 that will lead to new live-action movies. Unlike Tolkien’s novels’ previous six live-action film adaptations, The

When Amazon debuted its highly anticipated Most Expensive TV Series Ever Made — The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power last fall — the company had to contend with a bothersome rival from Warner Bros. Discovery: the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. Warners picked a debut date for its prestige TV drama 12 days before Amazon’s $1 billion gamble launched, ensuring nonstop media and fandom comparisons, many of which were less favorable to the family-friendly Rings. For Amazon, the head-to-head rivalry was all the more galling because Warners is a minority licensee stakeholder in Rings, so they’re ostensibly supposed to be on the same side. Team Rings’ public spin concerning the matchup went like this: None of this matters because these shows are totally different.

All said and done, Peter Jackson's two trilogies based on Jrr Tolkien's work made more than $6 billion worldwide for Warner Bros. So we perhaps should not be very surprised to learn that parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has hatched a deal to make more movies.
To be clear, these new planned films will be separate from The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim, the animated story of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. That one is already headed to screens next year on 12 April.
Given that the news has only just been revealed by Wbd CEO David Zaslav on an investors' call, there are naturally zero details as to where the new films might draw from, but we'd hope the company doesn't look to tread the same old ground. (The Second Age is also likely off limits thanks to Prime Video's mega budget TV series.

With the film industry as a whole taking a significant hit during the early years of the pandemic, one progressive change that has been stifled for the past couple years is studios hiring more directors from underrepresented backgrounds.
There are all sorts of data points repeated over the years by annual studies, like USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, which has repeatedly revealed how increasing diversity within filmmaking helps, not harms, business prospects. For example, the latest USC study shared that films by underrepresented directors earned marginally higher Metacritic scores than movies from white directors, and yet 2022 had a 6.6 percent decline in the number of the directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups who helmed the top 100 films of the year.
Though the upcoming slate of studio films does not seem like it will move the needle even back to 2021 numbers, where the percentage of directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups reached a 15-year high,...

Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho’s next film “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson, is hitting theaters in 2024.
The Warner Bros. movie is currently in production and will debut on the big screen on March 29, 2024.
The sci-fi story is adapted from Edward Ashton’s novel, described by publisher St. Martin Press as a high-concept cerebral thriller in the vein of “The Martian” and “Dark Matter.” Pattinson will play an “expendable” — a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Nifheim — who refuses to let his replacement clone take his place.
Along with Pattinson, the cast includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo.
Plot details for the movie have not been confirmed, and it’s not clear how closely Bong plans to stick to the source material. Ashton’s book was published in February 2022.

Once upon a time, "The Lord of the Rings" was a legendary work of literature that fantasy enthusiasts regarded as one of the greatest works of fiction that hadn't reached mainstream success. That all changed with Warner Bros. and Peter Jackson's hugely successful and influential movie trilogy, which changed the way we look at fantasy and at blockbusters.
Two decades and a prequel trilogy later, we are finally going back to Middle-earth with the upcoming "The Rings of Power" TV show, which aims at expanding what we think of J. R. R. Middle Earth Enterprises, the holding company that owns all of J.R.R. Tolkien’s works including “Lord of the Rings,” “The Hobbit” and more, has been sold to Swedish gaming conglomerate Embracer.
The rights include movies, books, theatrical productions, video games, theme parks and merchandise in Tolkein’s most famous literary works – “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” – as well as “matching rights” in other literary works related to Middle-earth and authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins, primarily “The Silmarillion” and “The Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-Earth,” two compilations which were published after the writer’s death in 1973.
In February of this year, Variety exclusively revealed that the previous owner, the Saul Zaentz Co., was looking to sell.
The rights, which will be housed under a subsidiary called Embracer Freemode, were sold for an undisclosed amount however pre-sale estimates suggested the value of the properties was at least 2 billion.
