Predictable but fun
LetsReviewThat2615 February 2024
Players is a new addition to Netflix's roster of rom cons and at this point it might start to get stale, but I thought this was fun. Gina Rodriguez is looking better all the time. She's a bit of a player and has a list of different ways to get men in her bed. She falls for tom Ellis but his a cock so there is no spark. It's a bit of a predictable movie in the sense that we all could tell how it would end. I thought it was a fun watch though and for me atleast it got a couple of little laughs from me. It came out just in time for valentine's so it's nice seeing a pretty woman get it on. Overall players is cheesy and predictable but overall still not bad.

Hallmark makes better romcoms....
PerryAtTheMovies15 February 2024
5.3/10 (Not Recommended)

I thought this movie would be more of a group of people having fun and running a Playbook similar to Barney Stinson in HIMYM. However, it feels like a long drawn out trope for one guy that doesn't even feel exciting. The cast has some good and bad chemistry. At some points they're enjoyable together and at others annoying. The romance is relatively weak. The sub-romance was more intriguing than the main one. The lives, the backgrounds aren't very interesting. The overall length of the film is too long. I lost a lot of interest throughout and was thankful by the time it ended. It drags on and has no redeeming qualities. Hopefully you're not wasting your time watching it on Valentine's Day cause it's not a worthy V-Day movie.

That's all for now. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Until next time.... Enjoy the show!

Fun... But,
jordydemeyere18 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The movie shows everything that's wrong with modern dating. It depicts a woman having to play games, stalk and lose herself to be with a guy she knows nothing about. She mistakes attraction for love after 5 minutes, which they use as an excuse for the horrible things she does to Nick.

(If you don't thinks the stalking, playing with his heart and destroying his current relationships are horrible... It's time to take a look in the mirror) Her behaviour during the enitre, predictable, movie makes it hard to feel sorry for her. Even when it all comes tumbling down, you just feel "that's what you get" To then end up where she should have looked in the first place, the guy that's there for her. The guy that knows her and loves everything about her.

But she only realises this when her friends tell her... Which is a cheap plotline. Instead of letting her have a moment of self reflection. No a woman needs to be told when someone truly loves her or she's never going to see it. The movie clearly doesn't feel how wrong the entire plot is.

Oh how I miss the cute rom-com storries.

Alt Reality to Past Lives / More RomDram than RomCom
sushilp1716 February 2024
At first, the main cast of the movie comes across as knock-off, less egregious versions of Barney Stinson from "How I Met Your Mother," but eventually, the movie matures in a way I wasn't expecting it to. I would think a lot of people in their late twenties to early thirties could relate to the struggle of wanting to move from casual dating to serious relationships, and then holding onto dear life anybody who shows promise of a serious relationship. It was cool it all play out.

The movie won't give you a lot to laugh at, but I think it does give you a bit to think about. And that's always nice.

There's truly nothing like a slow-burn friends to lovers story that really gets me going. I wanna experience falling in love with my best friend again.

I was rooting for them the whole time, they had such good chemistry. I love gina rodriguez i swear she can do no wrong in these roles

it was hard to not see jane the virgin, winston from new girl, lucifer and the guy from the kissing booth but i loved their group dynamic. Also liza?? Ive missed my babygirl

honestly pretty good movie, i thoroughly enjoyed it. Netflix movies usually are hit or miss and i know some people will hate on it but definitely a good casual movie. At least i felt the characters had some sort of chemistry and they're so real for manipulating every situation to get the guy they want

girl i'd fake my whole persona for a hot man with an accent too.

Charmless and immature.
michroberto19 February 2024
I think the basic premise would have been more believable if this was a college comedy. If the cast and characters were all under 25, the lack of maturity and self awareness would have made sense. But to have characters in their 30s and 40s acting like scheming horny frat boys wasn't entertaining. I usually find Gina Rodriguez and Tom Ellis to be charming. Here... not so much. He came across as dull. There was little chemistry between them. Her character really didn't make a ton of sense. You are an attractive woman in NYC, if you really have to try that hard to get laid, you are doing it wrong.

I haven't seen Damon Wayans Jr. In many things, does he always act like he is sleepwalking? Maybe he just agreed to do this for the paycheck. I get that. Just wish it didn't show on screen.

Formulaic
Tactrix15 February 2024
Can we please stop with the same thing over and over again? I get it, you think it works. It doesn't. We've been over this formula of movies since the 90s, the fact that they're predictable makes them really bad. And here's the thing, this movie had all the potential of being good, except when you went into the formula part of it and started to make it the same stupid thing as the 9000 romcoms before it were.

Just stop making movies predictable, the first 30 minutes were great, it had originality and flair, and then you started with the whole "girl finally wants to get the guy" part and it sucked BADLY. Please any directors that see this review, take a note and stop making this garbage, no one wants to see it.

6/10 predictable formulaic same old story, no new spin.

A rom-com with hardly any rom
marty-7869914 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I fail to see how this movie is supposed to be romantic, it's more of a comedy mainly focused on a friend group with a blatantly obvious "twist" to it.

Now, predicability aside which can be excused given the supposed genre, most if not all the characters are so shallow and childish that it's impossible to care for anyone, especially the female lead- I seriously couldn't cringe any harder at her stalkerish antics and the heavy lack of chemistry between her and the guy she's after. I mean, this is a grown woman who behaves like a middle schooler chasing after some dude whose interest in her is so nonexistent it's painful to watch really.

Honestly, it would've been wayy more enjoyable and less ridiculous if 1) they didn't cast people in their 40s to act like teens 2) they focused more on her apparently repressed feelings for her friend instead of making her pathetic and desperate for a guy who could not care less about her. Not to mention, their approach to human relationships is treated as if they were hunting a piece of meat, which I find tasteless to say the least for a bunch of grown adults.

The only positive trait I can find is that the friends group is solid and genuinely care about one another but that's about it. If you're looking for an actual rom-com however, I suggest for you to look somewhere else.

Waiting for the trigger
phulla17 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Starts off fun, some interesting moments and reminds me a little of Will Smith's Hitch, and a few other of these types of movies where the main characters love interest grows from deceptive and other means.

Dips during the middle, starts getting too serious for a comedy, for too long, and there are hints of the "other" one who's had a life long obsession with the main character.

One good thing it shows just like all other movies of this type, people are not as they first appear, "love is blind" as they say, if there is one thing you take from this movie it's, don't be someone you're not, let people accept you for who you are, they way you are.

It's obvious there will be a trigger moment where the truth comes out and then the next half of the movie is spent in contemplation. Too predictable.

Predictable, boring, and dumb
cruise0114 February 2024
.5 out of 5 stars.

Players is a horrible romantic comedy film that lacks the potential on being fun and romantic.

Plot is boring and forgettable. About a sports writer who comes up with plays with her friends on hooking up. Until she meets a big shot guy which she hooks up with and thinks she falls for him. Gina Rodriguez and Damon Wayans performance were tedious.

The acting is flat. The script lacks the humor. The direction is forgettable. Yes the story can be predictable with knowing what will happen in the end. It does not offer any new surprises for a romantic comedy. This film is definitely worth skipping thats one of the worst this year.

Good Moments
kwc-1813916 February 2024
I can never understand critics ratings on Rom-Coms so I never really pay attention when it comes to these kind of movies. In my view, for these to work you have to have a strong talented female lead, good script and be creative with how the love transpires, even if you give some of the clues early. The lead actress, Gina Rodriguez was on point because she was cute, funny and human. Most of us regardless of age don't understand our own feelings and she eventually got it which I thought played out well with the script. Where they messed up with her is that I really never understood the reason for the "one night stand" process or maybe they didn't flush the reasoning out clearly. I think the male counterparts were weak because Mr. Lucifer didn't seem to fit the gorgeous, supposedly adult male part and Mr. Wyans seems to have good chemistry with Gina but his mood was to negative looking for some reason and he was pessimistic most of the time so the obvious was noticed early in the movie. I won't spoil anything by talking about the romance and love areas of the movie. I think these type stories should be short limited series, like 4-5 episodes to flush out all the back stories like the Koreans do with there kdramas, which are excellent at this kind of material.

Overall, good job by Gina Rodriguez and she pretty much carries this across the finish line!

More Rom-com Adjacent than Romantic
kirstiehoq17 February 2024
I thought Players was an enjoyable watch with a nice balance of humor and endearing moments. It emphasized the bonds of friendship and the importance of staying true to who you are especially when it comes to love.

Pros: Funny, sweet, refreshing characters Con: Lacked chemistry. Predictable plot

I was surprised by the IMDB rating but once I saw some of the reviews I understood why.. A woman who deceives men in order to land a night with them or maybe even a relationship?

A woman playing the games of boys?

*Cue the shocked gasps & clutching of pearls*

Overall I liked it & will probably watch it again xx.

Masterclass in Predictable Boredom
layal-jamal15 February 2024
This romcom lacked originality, becoming a tedious experience with a predictable plot that failed to evoke any laughter.

Players completely missed the mark. Unclear what they were thinking, as it failed to capture my interest and left me disengaged throughout. Just bad and boring.

The plot was very weak, they tried to be too smart with fast quirky dialogues but just made everything too shallow, and made the characters even more unrealistic. Couldn't connect with anyone or anything that was happening.

I don't know what more to say, but I hope to see modern romcoms that have deeper meaning and better storytelling.

What is going on with these rom-coms lately
Jonathannba123416 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So, the black dude watched the love of his life hooking up with random men left to right, helped her through it for more than a decade, and then went into a relationship with her? Hahahahhaaa

So these movies are just about humiliating men nowadays huh?

No wonder people are getting confused in their relationships, it's cuz they watch these movies and think men are like this, when in reality men are the polar opposite of this.

If a situation like this happens, it's probably a girl knows for A FACT that he's in love, and she's just dragging him along so she won't feel lonely when she reaches 30 and still haven't found a husband, so she could have a back up.

Horrible acting, and over exaggerating the sex life of adults, and predictable.

Interesting movie wich i enjoyed.
destroyerwod25 February 2024
This movie was in a way predictable and simple in its premise, yet at the same time having originality and somehow being a bit of a throwback to raunchy movies (almost). Yeah its all of this.

So here we have this group of friends who are apparently in their 30s doing the "player" gig and empowering each other to "score" with dates. The funny twist is that the main character, the brain of the operation, is actually a woman.

That part i taught was pretty interesting, because why a woman wouldn't be into this style of dates too? She is clearly "part of the boys" in the movie and that made perfect sense with her interests yet obviously she is a very attractive woman wich can also showcase her feminity.

Beside that they have that bi male character wich ultimately lead to absolutely nowhere so its really more of a product of the penderverse if you know what i mean, but it was so in the background that it didn't bothered me at all. Guys or gals, his dating life ain't the focuss at all.

Tom Ellis wich we all adore as Lucifer Morningstar plays the object of the main character desire in the movie, but as with any romcoms, nothing is as simple as it look. I think he was fine in his role and maybe its just me being happy to see him again (because i didn't since Lucifer ended) but at the same time his character could litterally be Lucifer from the show in disguise pre-season 1 lol. It was very reminiscent character wise. Hopefully he does not get type casted too much and manage to have a good varied career.

Overall i had fun following the story as it unfolded. There was a few funny moments, some romance, the movie even at times gave me the vibes of those raunchy unpolitically correct movies i enjoyed so much despite the bi character.

I would give it a good 7 out of 10. Its a fun movie that try something while playing safe on some fronts, yet the cast was pretty charismatic both actors and characters so i had fun following them. Perfectly good as a streaming service movie.

Not that bad
Gowmes21 February 2024
The cast had chemistry, the story wasnt that bad.

Cant give a bad review because it was actually decent and congrats to Gina for giving us a good and funny movie.

The introduction of a bi-male mixed with the personality he adapts makes the movie so much more fun and interesting.

Liza Koshy delivered as an entertainer, some people are just born to be fun.. Tom Ellis accent sometimes it's a little bit annoying and melancholic and he looks like he's playing Lucifer all the way up.

Overall I'm giving a 7 because the contents good Of course the acting it's not 100 perfect and the transitions but pretty decent for a 7.

Predicted the ending from the trailer
louiselaffan15 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
To be honest I only watched this to see if my gut feeling from the trailer was right, and it was.

The "twist" at the end has been done so many times, and in much better ways, leaving this film watchable, but ultimately forgettable.

The 'play' premise and the fact they've been working people for over a decade makes the characters appear shallow and flaky, so it's hard to root for Mack in her quest to get serious.

It's billed as a comedy but I didn't laugh once.

While none of the cast were awful, they just weren't overly likeable characters. Joel Courtney seems stuck in the little brother category. Tom Ellis however, gave a solid performance and elevated any scene he was in.

Ohh the Netflix magic
Sh31kh_H0kv522 February 2024
To someone I've been what they've been searching for their whole life to someone still i might be the most irresponsible irritating nerve wracking person they know but with Netflix you always get what you want, it was beautiful really, no hard turn of events just taking time to mature properly I guess who ever wrote this can tell that so many people would find it adorable that in one way or another in moments where key scenes reflex on their once in memory or everyday life they all can feel the reality in this movie that longing that at one point in time it did or I wish it had happen to me kind of feeling that's the only reason why in a way i liked it.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Players
burlesonjesse514 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not gonna lie, most romantic comedies feel dated (no pun intended). They just do. Take 2024's Players for instance. It appears like it's straight from the bin of the early-to-mid 2000s, when stars Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore, Adam Sandler, Katherine Heigl, and Matthew McConaughey ruled the roost. It's like the evolution of falling in love well, never evolved. "You're gonna go after her?" Not sure on that one honey.

That's not to say that Players doesn't have a few entertaining moments cause it does. It's about a female sportswriter (Gina Rodriguez as Mack) who decides with her buds, to form a relationship via a guy she had a one-night stand with (Tom Ellis as Nick). Said buds (and Mack herself) do this NFL-style, with an amorous playbook hoping to rekindle the remnant love. The problem is that all the poop jokes, awkward dialogue exchanges, stealth stalking clips, and galling side characters keep getting in the way. I mean almost everyone in Players is in their 30s and they act like they're conveying junior high deportment. Ugh!

X's, O's, and callow besties aside, Players was shot in NYC almost three years ago and is distributed by Netflix (what isn't). And oh yeah, the film has a lead in Rodriquez that is adorable. Players also finds its footing in the last half as the nearly pauper, personas involved just shut up for a second and act human. What Players doesn't have however, is novelty or any kind of break with tradition. I mean when you can predict the ending about 40 minutes into a 105-minute runtime (girl gets guy but not the guy you think she gets), it's time to face "the ugly truth", stick to "what happens in Vegas", or look at "27 dresses" (if you're a girl of course). "Played out".

Unique route to a predictable destination...
bk75321 February 2024
There are fun and funny sequences here... as a band of merry and manipulative friends run well orchestrated "plays" to score hookups and have fun. It starts off clever and witty, but then starts to get bogged down in some deep rom-com muck and loses its footing in the second act. Felt like it still might be salvageable, but it failed to exit the quagmire of romantic predictability and lost the edge it began with. Didn't hate it by any means (and loved the baseball angle), but what started as something vibrant ended up being more formulaic and cheesy than it shoulda been.

Love the way the friends interacted, and genuinely liked Mac (Gina Rodriguez), but her attempts to fight her way out of "oops, first date sex" zone and into an "adult" relationship using ploys and dishonesty were a bit too contrived for me. And we all saw the ending coming from a mile away... the tried and true "gee, everyone knew but me?" card. Not a bad film, but nothing special either.

Boring and forgettable.
rowanderaven18 February 2024
Let's be honest, rom-coms are expected to be predictable... but not boring. And this one is really boring.

The script is deficient and the dialogues are superficial. All the sports references are incomprehensible and/or uninteresting to non-fans. The supporting cast performances are 'correct' (although Wayans and Ellis deserved better), but it's difficult to sympathize or feel empathy for the character Mack (Rodriguez), either considering she is a shallow character or because she was poorly constructed by the actress. Gina Rodriguez doesn't seem to have enough "star quality" to save such a silly film.

No offense, but who is Gina Rodriguez? Seriously, I had to 'Google' her name and even then, I still don't know how famous she supposedly is. I don't even know if she's considered a good actress, but her acting in this film is, at most, average. Actually, a bit annoying, sometimes.

If you really want to watch a delicious rom-com, look for older titles like "Pretty Woman" (1990), "Sleepless in Seattle" (1993), "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994), "While You Were Sleeping" (1995), "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997), "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" (1998), "Notting Hill" (1999), "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001), "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (2002), "Love, Actually" (2003), "Something's Gotta Give" (2003), "13 Going on 30" (2004), "P. S. I Love You" (2007), "Crazy Rich Asians" (2018), or many others, many others but not this one. This one - "Players" - is forgettable.

And do some research before accepting Netflix's recommendations. I will.

Predictable but enjoyable
loriepot14 February 2024
I think you figure out within the first few minutes how this romcom is going to end, but it was a fun and cute journey to watch it get there!

All the characters had great chemistry, each with their own quirks and the jokes weren't overdone. Usually in a rom com there would be a couple of side characters I wouldn't particularly like but I ended up falling in love with all of them!

Gina Rodriguez is amazing as per usual. You were rooting for her to get her happy ending the whole time.

It's obviously not going to win any Oscar's, but it ticked all my boxes and I finished it with a smile and will most definitely watch it again in the future!

Cute story for a short, but nothing special
regina_enrile26 February 2024
I mainly watched it for Gina Rodriguez since I only know her from Jane the Virgin. And to my surprise, Liza was in this movie! She was my favourite part.

Classic B rom-com movie, but nothing super new in terms of plot.

It's your classic, girl and guy best friends who are in denial about being in love with each other. Wrong timing, they get into other relationships, relationships die off and they realize they're in love with each other, so they end up together.

It was a good watch if you're craving some rom-com, I probably wouldn't ever reach to watch it again though, but I feel like that's typical rom-coms in general. It's good for killing time.

Nonsense.
LaReinadelSur9715 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
First of all, why did jane the virgin decided she was in love with a man she slept once, drunk and knew nothing about? Then The girl gets mad because the guy dont like her for who she actually is - after she spent one hour of the movie lying to him, stalking him and being weird. Plus the guy is a award winning writer and the movie wants us to believe that the boring girl jane the virgin plays in the movie wrote an amazing piece even though the award winning didnt liked her writing... yeah, sure. Besides that, the plot is predictable and awfully done. Even lucifer couldn't save this movie! Its not funny, its not romantic, its just weird.

6.5- formulaic and predictable but fun to watch
mccabe-shannon6 April 2024
Yes. We all know exactly where it's going. But, we can say that about nearly everything these days. This is a hallmark class movie with higher production and cast.

I really enjoyed it. I personally thought the casting was perfect. Everyone had really great chemistry and banter as long time friends. The movie hit its two goals- want to be one of their friends, and root for the best friends to become a couple. I did both of those.

I thought it was perfectly entertaining for a few hours of lounging in the couch. Would I have gone to a theater to see it- definitely not, but I don't think it would claim to be a blockbuster so it does what it aimed to very well.

I'd watch it again in a rainy Sunday if I came across it.
