However, everything almost fell apart due to the filmmaker’s ambitious vision for the climactic Battle of Helm’s Deep in the 2002 film The Two Towers. The arduous filming process took its toll, not only on the filmmaker himself but also on the cast, including Viggo Mortensen, who later admitted that although he loved the sequence, he hated filming it.

Deep into Hulu’s Under the Bridge, author Rebecca Godfrey (Riley Keough) defends the focus of her latest manuscript. “People can do horrible things, and that doesn’t make them inherently evil,” she insists. As she sees it, her book is simply challenging the reader to consider that an individual’s humanity is not defined by their worst deed.
It’s a big ask considering the subject in question has been charged with murder — but potentially a worthy one too, not least because the accused is just a teenager. Unfortunately, it’s also one Under the Bridge does not actually have the nerve to tackle head-on. Despite some moving performances (particularly from its young cast), the writing ultimately proves too vague and too muddled in its messaging to shed new light on much of anything.

It has been a while since “The Queen’s Gambit,” but as proven by “Rematch,” viewers’ love for chess is certainly not diminishing.
The show, dedicated to confrontation between famous chess player Garry Kasparov and Ibm’s supercomputer Deep Blue, was named the winner at Series Mania.
A somewhat lukewarm reception of “Apples Never Fall” didn’t stop Annette Bening from being crowned as best actress. The Peacock offering, also featuring Sam Neill and Alison Brie, is the latest adaptation of “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers” scribe Liane Moriarty. Now showing a perfect family who, following its matriarch’s disappearance, needs to face some uncomfortable questions. Including this one: Did their beloved father have something to do with it?

Not long ago, Lizzie No had an out-of-body experience while listening to Gillian Welch. The singer-songwriter had spent the past few years trying to make sense of the fractured, frighteningly personal songs she’d been writing, songs that spoke to a pain whose source she couldn’t always name. Many of them ended up on Halfsies, the stunning new record that the songwriter says is, in large part, about the “sensation of living in the scar without having any understanding of the initial wound.”
Which brings No (real name Lizzie Quinlan) to Gillian Welch.

With its breakneck pace, 90-second songs, and rants against animal testing, Gouge Away’s 2016 debut, Dies, placed the band’s sound squarely within the hardcore template. But the band’s range of influences runs deeper, a fact that’s evident even from their name, which was inspired by the Pixies song. Their third studio album, Deep Sage, finds Gouge Away evolving even further toward the ‘90s noise-rock sound they introduced on 2018’s Burnt Sugar.
Singer Christina Michelle shouted her way through Gouge Away’s early songs, but she shows a broader vocal range across Deep Sage’s 11 tracks. “Stuck in a Dream,” for one, pulses with fury as she repeats its minimal lyrics—“God, I just want to wake up/Up up up up up”—but her howls on this song and others are juxtaposed by passages of more melodic singing.

Zach Bryan kicked off “The Quittin Time Tour” at United Center in Chicago on Tuesday (March 5th), delivering a 25-song set that spanned across his growing discography and also featured a surprise appearance from Kacey Musgraves.
To begin the show, Bryan played “Overtime” from his most recent studio album, Zach Bryan, and “Open the Gate” off of his 2022 breakout effort, American Heartbreak. Bryan then dipped back to his 2019 debut, DeAnn, to perform “God Speed” before going into his unreleased song “The Great American Bar Scene.”

The country star continued zig-zagging through his catalog, performing some of his biggest songs alongside other favorites like “Nine Ball” and “Oklahoma Smokeshow” and older cuts like “Condemned” and “Heading South.”
Undoubtedly the biggest moment of the evening was when Bryan brought out Musgraves to duet their No. 1 hit (and Consequence Song of the Week), “I Remember Everything,” for the first time ever.

Callum Turner and Alia Shawkat have joined the cast of the Luca Guadagnino-produced feature ‘Atropia.’
Based on Hailey Gates’ 2019 short ‘Shako Mako’ which she originally produced for fashion brand Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales series, the feature follows the story of an aspiring actress who is working on a U.S. military training base simulating an Iraqi war zone. (“Atropia” is the name of a fake country reportedly invented by the American military for interactive training exercises).
The short’s synopsis reads “Farah, a bread seller, walks the streets of a Middle Eastern town, while an American military vehicle, surrounded by soldiers, slowly passes by, A moment’s silence. Then, a devastating explosion. Civilians are bloodied and wounded. The horrors of war. ‘Farah’ looks around aghast and wailing.”

"A beguiling cosmic nightmare." XYZ Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror psychological thriller called Lovely, Dark, and Deep, which marks the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Teresa Sutherland. The film originally premiered at Canada's Fantasia Film Festival and Toronto After Dark Film Festival, and also at the MOTELx Lisbon Horror Film Festival last year. Lennon, a new back-country ranger, travels alone through the dangerous wilderness, hoping to uncover the origins of a tragedy that has haunted her since she was a child. While adapting to her solitary existence in the wilderness, she becomes aware of a lurking, sinister presence. Georgina Campbell stars as Lennon, with a small indie cast including Nick Blood, Wai Ching Ho, Edgar Morais, Ana Sofia Martins, and Soren Hellerup. This looks way, way creepier than you're probably expecting - especially when it gets weirder as this super eerie trailer plays out. // Continue...

Is Aggro Dr1ft the future of cinema? Not in any quantifiable, justifiable sense. Does it have anything to say? I admire Harmony Korine using infrared images and abstract editing to convey anxieties about growing older, being a married man, and acting as father to two children in a violent world. Did I laugh at the angel-winged, sword-wielding, gravel-voiced bad guy saying, “Dance bitches. Dance bitches. Dance bitch. Dance bitches”? Well…
After a contentious run on the fall-festival circuit, where people either had to declare Aggro Dr1ft was putting a stake in cinema’s heart by righteously pissing on the graves of Eadweard Muybridge and Orson Welles or an embarrassment for which Korine should be ashamed––I propose it’s sufficient to think “this looks kind of neat” and occasionally laugh across 80 fleet-enough minutes––Korine’s Edglrd is beginning their roll-out of the film at the Los Angeles strip club Crazy Girls...

Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Zac Brown Band, and Mac MacAnally all took the stage at the 2023 CMA Awards to celebrate the music of Jimmy Buffett, who died earlier this year.
Chesney and MacAnally, a longtime member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band, kicked things off with a faithful acoustic rendition of the seafaring ballad “A Pirate Looks at Forty,” which Chesney also sang in a video tribute to Buffett that he posted shortly after the songwriter’s death in September. Everyone likes Jason Ritter, the charming actor from shows such as Parenthood, Kevin (Probably) Saves the World and Joan of Arcadia, right? Well, if you’re Gen V’s Sam, you’re not such a big fan of the TV vet.
In TVLine’s exclusive sneak peek from this Friday’s episode of the Boys spinoff (streaming on Prime Video), Sam finds himself suffering from a breakdown involving visions of a puppet show starring Ritter (as himself) and a felt version of The Seven supe The Deep. And to make matters worse, the duo talk directly to Sam from the screen.

Starfield isn’t a heavily flawed game, but it isn’t a perfect game either. The title is full of design choices and mechanics that can get on players’ nerves, and more than a few gamers might want to get rid of or at least alter these systems. Since we can’t assume Bethesda will alter the game for us (or wait for them to do so), modders have taken it upon themselves to produce altered game code, i.e., mods, and provide them to the general gaming public.
You can find thousands upon thousands of mods at sites such as Nexus Mods. These options files add new weapons and armor, completely rework enemy AI, and everything in between. You can use these mods to tweak your Starfield experience any way you wish, but some are more essential than others. Here are what we believe are some of the best...

Chace Crawford's The Deep has quietly turned into the Mvp of "The Boys": a character who you love to hate, who is just the right amount of pitiful that makes you want to watch more of him, but not pitiful enough that you feel bad when things don't go his way. This is mostly due to Crawford's portrayal of the character, who -- unlike Homelander or the other villains of the show -- is terrifying because of how ordinary he is. The Deep is just some loser with a position of power, and that makes him scary, especially when involved in less fantastical, more relatable storylines.
Still, The Deep has also been involved in some of the funniest storylines in the show, like his accidental killing of every single sea creature he comes across, even ones he is weirdly sexually involved with, and also that time he got involved with a cult.

Rule No. 5: You don’t waste good. And there is a lot of good stuff to be enjoyed as NCIS marks its 20th anniversary this month.
On Monday, Sept. 25, CBS is officially celebrating “NCIS Day” — exactly 20 years (…plus two days) after the Jag spinoff made its broadcast debut. The well-watched NCIS mothership has aired 459 episodes to date, and with all offshoots (including NCIS: Sydney) combined, the franchise will reach a milestone 1,000th episode (!) during NCIS’ 21st season (premiere date Tbd). It's a tale as old as it is tragic: another famous male superhero has had his bulge digitally removed in post-production. In a 2019 interview with Daily Mail Australia, Chace Crawford talked about how his infamous fish-loving character The Deep was originally supposed to have a comically large penis, one that viewers could clearly see the imprint of through his outfit. "[Showrunner Eric] Kripke was like, 'We get no notes from Amazon, but the first one we got was that [the bulge] can't f***ing happen, we've got to take that out."
Sure enough, the prosthetic was removed, and all of The Deep's scenes that were already filmed had his fake penis downsized via CGI. It's a shame though, because both Crawford and Kripke seemed to find it hilarious. "I don't think anyone got a bigger kick out of it than Eric Kripke," Chase told Entertainment Weekly. "He thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

Everyone knows that it's an awfully self-destructive idea to let the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes drag on in perpetuity, harming countless below-the-line crew members, theater owners, and more who rely on the film and television industries to make a living -- everyone, that is, except for the AMPTP themselves, apparently. We recently wrote about one of the latest dominoes to fall as the highly-anticipated "Dune: Part 2" was pushed back to next year, becoming the latest casualty of the studios' abject refusal to present reasonable counterproposals in good faith as the sides struggle to work out a fair contract. Now, fantasy nerds are the latest fans to be victimized by the producers' unwillingness to, frankly, get their s*** together.

We all know Mystery Science Theater 3000 as the show in which a human host and a couple of robots make fun of bad movies. According to in-universe lore, the movies come via mad scientist members of the Forrester family, who test the sanity of a human subject by forcing them to watch terrible films. The humans — beginning with Joel Robinson (series creator Joel Hodgson), followed by Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson), Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), and Emily Connor (Emily Marsh) — fight back by riffing on the films, a task made easier not just by the robot sidekicks Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, but also by the genuine awfulness of the movies.

In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Sins of the Father," Worf (Michael Dorn) learned that he had a brother named Kurn (Tony Todd) who arrived on the Enterprise to recruit Worf for a special mission. It seems that their deceased father, Mogh, had been posthumously accused of treason by the Klingon High Council. Worf and Kurn needed to go back to the Klingon homeworld to make an appeal and clear their father's name; in Klingon society, the crimes of one generation implicate the next. Worf and Kurn, if they are unsuccessful, will be excommunicated from Klingon society — a grievous shame indeed — and executed in their father's staid.
At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Mogh had been framed ... by the father of Duras (Patrick Massett), a Klingon nobleman and heir to the throne. It seems that everyone knows how dirty Duras was, but to expose...

As Teresa Sutherland’s Lovely, Dark, and Deep opens, the first thing that hits you is the vastness. We are met with a series of shots of wide, undisturbed wilderness. Trees reaching up to the sky and dwarfing anyone who might be standing beneath them. Miles and miles of quiet nothingness. At once peaceful, and foreboding. Because against all this vastness, we are small. Insignificant. And forgettable.
Park Ranger Lennon (Georgina Campbell) is preparing for a new job. After years in a more junior level position, where she interacted with tourists and day hikers, she is finally being given the opportunity to go out into the backcountry and spend months in the wilderness of the far reaches of Arveres National Park. Her motivations for pursuing this position have to do with a tragedy in her past. When she was a child, her sister Jenny disappeared in this very park. One moment,...

Coming from the writer of recent slow-burn horror The Wind, the slightly oddly-titled Lovely, Dark and Deep, tells the story of a park ranger looking for answers from a childhood tragedy while she walks alone through the wilderness.
I guess it should be no surprise that this movie could also be called a slow burner but don’t go thinking that this means the first half or more of the film is boring or that nothing of note happens. Because Lovely, Dark and Deep grabs its viewers right from the start. But, there’s no doubt that the pace picks up towards the climax of the film and the movie leans more into horror the longer it goes on.

To study African-American history, which has become a politically charged act in America like no time since the early 1970s, is usually less about understanding a minority group and more about looking at the country’s character in a less glowing light. Which is why unsurprisingly, some would rather us forget African-American history altogether.

Out of all the films I saw at the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening of Tian Xiopeng’s Deep Sea was the only theater experience where I can say my emotional journey mirrored that of an amusement park roller coaster.
The first half of this film was genuinely unbearable to sit through. Not only was it painfully obvious how much the film was ripping off the style and sensibilities of legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki (specifically Spirited Away), but the actual execution of the first half in terms of presentation, animation and humor left me wincing at what I was watching.
All the characters were incredibly over-animated to the point that I couldn’t take anything that was happening seriously. The characters, aside from the main protagonist, were all unlikeable and the film gave me very little reason as to why I should care or sympathize with them. Most importantly though,...

Occasionally, actors take on a role that gets its hooks in them and doesn't completely untether once shooting is over. It's happened to some of the best performers on the planet, and it apparently happened to Tom Holland while playing Danny Sullivan in the upcoming Apple TV+ crime miniseries "The Crowded Room."
If that title sounds familiar, it's because the project has been kicking around since the early 1990s. Based on Daniel Keyes' nonfiction book "The Minds of Billy Milligan," which details the criminal exploits of a serial rapist afflicted with dissociative identity disorder, the project was nearly James Cameron's follow-up to "Terminator 2: Judgment Day." John Cusack was originally cast in the lead, and Cameron was preparing to shoot before a series of lawsuits (some filed by Milligan himself) derailed the production.

Saturday Night Live has become renowned for its iconic sketches, many of which have gone down in TV history as legendary. Part of what makes the NBC sketch comedy series so special, is the unpredictable nature of the live show. From cast members breaking character to surprise celebrity cameos, some of SNL’s most iconic moments have come from improvised performances. Recently, Jimmy Fallon appeared on Andy Cohen’s podcast and shared an hilarious story about a sketch he performed on the show with no rehearsal and no script.
Jimmy Fallon was an ‘SNL’ cast member for six years
According to IMDb, Fallon’s breakthrough as a performer came during his six-year tenure on Saturday Night Live from 1998 to 2004. Before joining the cast, he had been a stand-up comedian, but it was his work on SNL that catapulted him into mainstream fame and cemented his status as a beloved entertainer.

The feature is serving as the directorial debut of Ishana Night Shyamalan, the daughter of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.

When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night.
Campbell will play one of the three strangers.
The project is eyeing a summer shoot in Ireland with a theatrical release scheduled for June 7, 2024.
M. Night Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajan will produce through Blinding Edge Pictures. Nimitt Mankad will also produce via Inimitable Pictures. Jo Homewood and Stephen Dembitzer are executive producing.
