XYZ Films has acquired U.S. rights to the classic Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “The World is Yours” directed by Romain Gavras from StudioCanal and to the TIFF hit film “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins. The hyper-stylized films are the first titles in a new XYZ initiative to introduce audiences to classic festival hits that cater to cinema fans.
“The World is Yours” premiered at Cannes in 2018 and stars Karim Leklou, Isabelle Adjani, Vincent Cassel and Oulaya Amamra and was co-written by Gavras, Karim Boukercha and Noe Debre. In the film, a mid-level drug dealer (Leklou) dreams of having a new life, but his mother (Adjani) has gambled away his savings. He must take one last job in Spain, but his entourage gets involved: his mother, his ex-con friend, his crush, and possibly The Illuminati.

Over the last decade or so, Marvel has had a knack for snagging independent filmmakers with a lot of buzz, critical acclaim, and innovative creative voices to join their stable. Before James Gunn was at the helm of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, he was the guy who got his start writing "Tromeo and Juliet" for Lloyd Kaufman. And he's not alone. Scott Derrickson, Jon Watts, Taika Waititi, Cate Shoreland, Destin Daniel Cretton, Chloé Zhao, Nia DaCosta, and so many others were still stars on the rise when Marvel came calling.
Fan reactions are typically divided with one camp worried this marks the end of their independent visions in favor of corporate-driven storytelling, while others are thrilled to see directors they love getting one hell of a paycheck. Theoretically, this should give them the creative freedom to make whatever film they want next, like the director's version of what...

A pair of siblings on the run after a robbery take refuge in a house with mysterious time-warping qualities, only to find that the law isn’t the only thing they have to fear. Things Will Be Different, the latest from the Rustic Films roster comes from longtime Benson & Morehead editor Michael Felker, who makes his feature writing and directing debut with this mind-bender that very much fits the mold of his frequent collaborators. Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) have just pulled off a major heist and they have to lay low for a while. This sibling duo hasn’t always had the greatest relationship – there is a traumatic past that comes into play –...

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

As a fan who’s always ready to warp into the realms of time travel movies, my anticipation for Things Will Be Different was as high as my hopes for a DeLorean to appear on my driveway. Helmed by Michael Felker, in what marks his leap from editing to directing, with frequent collaborators Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (Something in The Dirt) producing, this film is a time-twisting tale that packs a lot more than just temporal leaps.
Things Will Be Different throws estranged siblings Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy) into a temporal tangle that’s more twisted than spaghetti in a black hole. After a diner meet-up goes awry, they find refuge in an abandoned farmhouse that’s more than it appears. What initially seems like a lucky escape turns into a chronal puzzle, ensnaring them in a time they can’t easily zip back from.

Directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been busy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe lately, directing episodes of Moon Knight, Loki season 2, and the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again – but before they entered the Marvel universe, they were known for making genre films like Resolution, Spring, The Endless, Synchronic, and Something in the Dirt. Variety reports that they’re executive producers on the upcoming sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different, which stars Riley Dandy of Christmas Bloody Christmas and Adam David Thompson of A Walk Among the Tombstones. The film is set to have its world premiere at SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 11th, and in anticipation of that screening, a clip from Things Will Be Different has made its way online. “Love and death are the two great hinges on which all human sympathies turn.”
-B.R. Haydon
Love and death are the two most powerful forces in human experience. They are the engines of our stories because they are the engines of our existence. Our hopes, desires, heartbreaks, and fears so often hang on these two factors—ever-present and constantly in tension. Horror, more often than not, preoccupies itself with the latter but from time to time, a really great horror love story comes along. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s Spring is not only a great love story but an acknowledgment of the eternal balance of love and death that connects us to each other, the ancient and ongoing human story, and perhaps even the infinite.
Spring is quintessential Moorhead & Benson, who from their first feature, Resolution (2012), to their most recent, Something in the Dirt (2022), have explored vast and...

At a time when the Marvel Cinematic Universe is floundering like it never has before, Marvel Studios top dog Kevin Feige and co. have found a remarkably unlikely team of saviors in multi-hyphenates Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The sensibilities of the pair behind such off-kilter sci-fi horror films as "Synchronic" and "Something in the Dirt" proved to be a surprisingly perfect fit for "Moon Knight," an MCU show that often balanced precariously at the intersection of action-adventure, supernatural horror, and dark comedy. When the duo returned to direct the majority of "Loki" season 2, they delivered a similarly dizzying blend of trippy sci-fi, whimsical humor, and creepy horror, bringing the God of Mischief's tale to a frequently confusing, always engaging, and ultimately satisfying ending.
It's little wonder, then, that Feige and friends turned to Benson and Moorhead once again when they needed someone to overhaul "Daredevil: Born Again," the upcoming...

"Daredevil: Born Again" is back on track at Disney+ with a brand new creative team. As we reported recently, the series focused on attorney-by-day superhero-by-night Matt Murdock recently underwent a bit of a teardown behind the scenes at Marvel Studios. The powers that be felt a new creative direction was needed for what is intended to be a hulking 18-episode series. Now, we know who will be steering the ship.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dario Scardapane has been hired as the new showrunner for "Born Again." Charlie Cox, who starred in Netflix's "Daredevil" series, is reprising the lead role once again. Scardapane will also be writing new episodes and new material for some of what was already shot. XYZ Films has acquired North American sales rights to the horror-thriller “Deus Irae,” the debut feature of Argentine filmmaker Pedro Cristiani, and will introduce the film to buyers at the upcoming AFM. Variety has been given exclusive access to the film’s bone-chilling trailer (see below).
Premiering at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival in November, “Deus Irae” follows Father Javier, a priest living a fractured existence. On one side, he assists families who claim to have witnessed miracles, and on the other he belongs to a trio of excommunicated priests who hunt the possessed down to exorcize them under their own terms: with Bibles, fire and shotguns.
But when the only way to crush Evil is by becoming something even worse, he must question how much of his own humanity — or sanity — he’s willing to sacrifice in order to defeat the Devil.

There's no time like the present for the God of Mischief to return. "Loki" season 2 will see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) -- that is, the Loki from 2012 who escaped custody in "Avengers: Endgame," only to find himself captured by and then begrudgingly joining forces with the Time Variance Authority (Tva) -- dealing with the fallout of the season 1 finale. As you may recall, that episode ended with the alternate universe, gender-flipped Loki known as Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) killing the eccentric Kang the Conqueror variant He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), throwing all of time and space into chaos.
The trailer for "Loki" season 2 teases much of the multiversal mayhem to come, including a version of Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) who doesn't remember ever meeting Loki (and has a fondness for key lime pie) and Sylvie working at a historical-era McDonald's (you know times are tough when even timeline-hopping aliens need steady employment). However,...

We're definitely not in Kansas anymore, folks.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe went all-in on the multiverse during Phase 4, highlighted by event films like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." But while these big-screen spectacles inevitably received the majority of the spotlight, Kevin Feige arguably got the ball rolling in earnest with the six-part miniseries "Loki."
Picking up where the time-traveling hijinks of "Avengers: Endgame" left off, season 1 detailed the misadventures of 2012-era Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after a break in the timeline caused the God of Mischief to essentially fall out of time. Upon being captured by the Time Variance Authority and promptly put to work searching for an even more meddlesome Loki variant wreaking havoc across the so-called "sacred timeline," the supervillain-turned-antihero found himself woefully out of his own element as he came face-to-face with, well, himself -- or, rather, a gender-bent version of...

We have your first look at the trailer for Dan Bowhers' mystery thriller, Blue Hour: The Disappearance of Nick Brandreth. Olivia Brandreth was nine years old when her father disappeared. Twenty five years later, she has returned to her childhood home to finally get closure in an unrelenting attempt to set the record straight. Likened to faux documentary genre films of the same ilk, Lake Mungo and Something in the Dirt, it has big shoes to fill but is up to the task. Writer/Director Dan Bowhers commented about his inspiration for the film: "I was wondering what it would look like if a true crime documentary completely flew off the rails and went somewhere really strange. 2 years later, we made Blue Hour." Check out the...

Shot entirely in writer-director Tyler Taormina’s suburban Long Island hometown during the eerie hours between midnight and predawn, Happer’s Comet surveys an array of empty spaces and sleepless figures. What lighting there is comes from one of two ambient sources—electricity or the moon—and yet to call the film a noir would be misleading. Rather than menacing or oppressive, its sense of obscurity is almost soothing.
The film’s camera is drawn to anything that gleams and shimmers: the speaks of dust floating in a swimming pool, the blinking of electronic gizmos, the galaxy of water droplets across a windshield. Taormina’s unique sensibility makes the film, more than anything, a cinematic tone poem, expressing a reconciliation with sleeplessness as time yawns into strange infinitudes.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" cleaned up at the 95th annual Academy Awards, taking home seven Oscars including the trophies for Best Picture and Best Director for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. So, what are Daniels (as the duo is collectively known) doing next? Why making a Star War, of course!
It's a common refrain in modern Hollywood: a promising director (or directing duo) scores a hit, then immediately gets snatched up by a studio to oversee one of their franchises. Hence, it's understandable people weren't exactly thrilled to learn Daniels are working on "Skeleton Crew," an upcoming live-action "Star Wars" streaming series that takes place concurrently with "The Mandalorian" and its spinoffs. Is this the minds who gave us Daniel Radcliffe: Farting Corpse and a universe where everyone has hotdog fingers leaving their days of being legitimately weird and innovative behind them? If you love the cultier end of the sci-fi/horror spectrum, chances are that Justin Benson_, one of the clearest distillations of their unique filmmaking voice – and they’re not done with creating original projects.
In fact, as they tell the Script Apart podcast, away from their Marvel work, the duo are beavering away on several of their own projects – one of which is a series not only set in the same continuity as The Endless (aka the ‘Shitty Carl Cinematic Universe’), but focusing once again on the characters of Aaron and Justin.

The Dutch comedy duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil have a new project heading our way -- and it stars some pretty recognizable faces. Nick Frost has been tapped to lead the pair's first English-language feature, which is already gaining some pretty intense buzz. In a statement to Variety, Haars and van der Kuil said, "It's a dream come true working with this amazing, talented cast on our most insane movie yet." That's one hell of a claim considering these are the folks who made the cocktail of absurdity and vulgarity known as "Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman."
Frost also spoke with Variety and said, "'Krazy House' has been a completely bonkers project to be a part of and I've absolutely loved every minute of it." This is also certainly quite a claim, as Nick Frost is somewhat synonymous with wild, wacky, and wonderful comedy films.

The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Another month means another streaming service overhaul: prepare for another round of disappearing movies and TV shows, just when you were finally gearing up to watch them. But on the bright side, that also means a bunch of new titles coming in to fill that void. As always, Hulu has plenty of titles — both old and new — to make sure it remains one of the dozen subscription services we all keep paying for.
Among the incoming titles are three different series set to close things out with their finale seasons: Hulu's widely acclaimed "Wu-Tang: An American Saga," the FX crime drama "Snowfall" and the recently canceled ABC drama, "A Million Little Pieces." February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).
This month also marks the third and final season of Hulu’s widely acclaimed “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which charts the rise of the Wu-Tang clan over time. Season 3 catches up with the Wu-Tang members after their first album, facing divergent paths in the years that follow. It’s been strange to discover how many filmmakers have willfully ignored the fact that, for a couple of very recent years, the planet Earth was completely consumed by a deadly pandemic that killed millions of people, tanked our economies, transformed social interactions, and probably changed life as we know it forever. Most movies and TV shows are happy to pretend those years never happened, and have never interrupted the flow of their characters’ lives. But horror filmmakers — who work fast, work cheap, and have carte blanche to confront our most uncomfortable anxieties — are the exception.
The “Lockdown Wave” of filmmaking, with productions that took place in the midst of the pandemic or its immediate aftermath, has already yielded fascinating results. Films like “Host” nimbly explored themes of shared cultural responsibility, while Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s “Something in the Dirt” tackled broader existential dilemmas. It’s been a rough year and I know I’m not the only one. The harsh reality that the Covid-19 pandemic has become a part of everyday life, despite the fact that a lot of people continue to ignore it, coupled with the fact that just living day to day has become a major struggle for a lot of us this year, has led to folks looking for some form of escape, even if it’s brief. That’s where movies, television, and games come in. Movies are my escape. Movies make me happy. Talking to filmmakers about making movies makes me happy. I love all kinds of movies, but horror is my favorite genre. Horror is the genre I visit daily. Directing duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have created a string of films that are terrifying snapshots of unsettling phenomena affecting idiosyncratic characters. A typical Benson and Moorhead joint features the duo as central characters, who are usually faced with increasingly baffling circumstances that are often interconnected. For instance, their "Endless" and "Resolution" appear to share the same world, one in which time loops generate cyclical trauma and characters are at the mercy of an entity that demands appeasement. In their latest sci-fi comedy "Something in the Dirt," Benson and Moorhead evoke an apocalyptic world seemingly inhabited by two men who happen to be neighbors in Laurel Canyon. As stranger things transpire and the doom intensifies, the dynamic between the two men becomes increasingly tense, deepening the web of inexplicable terror.

2022 was an incredible year for horror films from across the world that deserve just as much attention as any domestic genre hit.
2022 has proven itself to be a banner year for horror and genre fans have never had more exciting and terrifying options at their disposal. Whether in the security of one’s own home or a dark movie theater, horror has been a comforting constant for audiences this year.
2022 hasn’t struggled when it comes to original horror blockbusters, with Nope, Barbarian, The Black Phone, Smile, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Ti West’s X and Pearl being some of the year’s biggest releases. 2022 hasn’t struggled when it comes to original horror blockbusters, with Nope, Barbarian, The Black Phone, Smile, Bodies Bodies Bodies, and Ti West’s X and Pearl being some of the year’s biggest releases. However, 2022 has had just as much to offer for sequel and franchise fans between Hellraiser, Prey, Scream, Terrifier 2, and Halloween Ends.

Three years ago, following the lack of recognition at the Oscars for horror films, Trace Thurman and I created “The Hereditaries” (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), a series of horror awards to acknowledge all of the great work being done in the genre.
We’re now up to the fourth annual Hereditaries (click here to vote), which celebrates the amazing diversity of horror films released in 2022. Ranging from blockbusters like Nope and Scream (2022), which lead the nominations with 10 apiece, to avant-garde indies like Hellbender and Something in the Dirt, to “under the radar” releases like Shudder’s Glorious and Korean thriller Midnight, we’re shining a light on all of the great horror content that came out this year.
Here’s what you’re voting on:

In 1938, Orson Welles terrified CBS Radio listeners with his adaptation of "The War of the Worlds." Despite clarifying before and during the broadcast that the radio drama was a work of pure fiction, Welles' play-by-play recount of a fictitious alien invasion famously caused a brief bout of mass hysteria. Many listeners had somehow believed that the invasion was real, even though the exact numbers of those who were swept up in it are unclear. Despite this, this radio drama is probably among the most infamous examples of the public believing that a work of pure fiction was real, even with the proper warnings indicating that it wasn't.
So, what exactly does Welles' doomed adaptation of "The War of the Worlds" and the recently-released "Something in the Dirt" have in common? According to directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead ("Synchronic," "Spring," "Moon Knight"), it's that ever-present idea that someone might not...

Something in the Dirt is the latest film from the filmmaking team of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Shot during the pandemic with a minimal crew it’s something of a return to the early days of their career shooting Resolution. Only this time they have ten years of experience shooting features to call on. The results are equal parts fascinating and frustrating.
Levi (Justin Benson) just needs a place to stay till he leaves Los Angeles, so he jumps on a non-lease apartment sight unseen. There he meets John (Aaron Moorhead) who’s been living in the building for ten or so years. But he’s never encountered anything like the strange light and floating objects the pair see in Levi’s apartment one afternoon. Sensing a chance to make some money they start researching the phenomena,...
