One of the central villains in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" is the amoral hedonist Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, ruler of House Harkonnen and overseer of spice production on the planet Arrakis. In the novel, he is described as being so immensely fat that he required a suit of anti-gravity devices -- called suspensors -- to hoist his massive girth. The Baron is cruel, power-mad, and regularly has sex slaves sent to his quarters so that he may engage in sick acts of murderous coitus. Some have criticized the Baron as an example of fatphobia and, rather unfortunately, "queer villainy" in popular media.
In David Lynch's 1984 film adaptation of "Dune," the Baron was played by Kenneth McMillan, and Lynch made him all the more revolting by encrusting his face with oily carbuncles that produced shot glasses of black pus. McMillan was outfitted with a fat suit, although he was decidedly...

Director Denis Villeneuve hit it big this year with the release of his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series, the film followed the story of feudal noble families in the future. Villeneuve’s handling of the adaptation, which was largely considered to be unadaptable, was lauded by critics and fans alike.
While Villeneuve seems to have cracked the sci-fi genre, he reportedly was full of praise for his contemporary Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The Dune director mentioned that he was in awe of the film while watching it and that he had watched it several times. Tenet remains one of Nolan’s more divisive works and earned only $359 million at the box office.

Nothing comes easy for “The Fall Guy” (Universal). Despite a home release 18 days after opening (typical for Universal) and outgrossing “Civil War” by $4 million despite playing for four weeks less, Alex Garland’s film shares top honors with the stuntman actioner this week on the VOD charts.
Both films, available for rental for 48 hours at $19.99, placed #1 on one chart apiece. “Civil War” leads at iTunes (ranking by transactions), while “Fall Guy” does at Fandango (calculated by revenue). One factor differentiating the two is that “Civil War” was released on Friday, while “Fall” debuted the previous Tuesday. That gave the latter an edge on Fandango, which has a weekly Monday-Sunday chart. It was #1 on iTunes on Wednesday through Friday, with “Civil War” #1 since.
“Fall” of course has been a disappointment in theaters. With a head of steam ahead of opening to excellent reviews, Ryan Gosling momentum, and a prime early May release date,...

Mentats are among the most confusing elements of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" adaptation. Though they are never properly explained in the movie, mentats are essential to the world of the film, and to the world of Frank Herbert's novels. They are basically human computers, capable of complex calculations — which makes them great political advisers due to their ability to forecast how any action will affect their lords. The smartest of all mentats is Thufir Hawat, who (in the novel) discovers the secret to Shaddam Corrino IV's Sardaukar, and is a major element in Duke Leto's plan to defeat his elite troops.
As played by Stephen McKinley Henderson in Villeneuve's first "Dune" film, Thufir Hawat also has the honor of being in one of the two funniest scenes in the movie when he suddenly shows up with a little parasol. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Henderson said the parasol...

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. But that didn't mean the look of "Dune" and "Part Two" came exclusively from the book. Production designer Patrice Vermette consulted a wide array of sources, leading to sets...

While most people probably think primarily of his strange cadence and his big hair, it's important to remember that Christopher Walken is a damn great actor (see his brief but memorable turn in "Dune: Part Two" as a recent reminder). Sure, Walken has achieved a sort of "living meme" status at this point in his career, but when he's on, he's on, and he's bound to turn in a killer performance. While his "Saturday Night Live" appearances have proven Walken is skilled at comedy, there's something inherently sinister about the actor, which means he's played a lot of villains throughout his career. He's one of our best movie bad guys. Think his cameo as a ruthless mobster in "True Romance," his turn as Donald Trump stand-in Max Shreck in "Batman Returns," and of course, one of his very best performances: drug lord Frank White in Abel Ferrara's nihilistic "King of New York.

“What do you people out there want?!” a Warner Bros. executive might be forgiven for asking after arguably the worst Memorial Day weekend box office in 40 years. Despite Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga opening to glowing reviews, glitzy standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival, and as part of a revered IP franchise whose last installment is considered one the best summer movies ever—Mad Max: Fury Road is a six-time Oscar winner!—the prequel’s box office still marked the lowest debut for a number one Memorial Day release since Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. And that came out in 1984.
Estimated to have grossed $31 million over the four-day weekend (and a meager $25 over the three-day) Furiosa’s first weekend box office bow is playing in the same neighborhood as when Harrison Ford’s archaeologist went to India and and Luke Skywalker fighting Darth Vader was considered a novelty.

What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.
Denis Villeneuve is not directing any episodes
The original plan was for Villeneuve to helm the series in addition to his big screen directorial duties. The series, originally announced as Dune: The Sisterhood,...

The Memorial Day Weekend we’d all like to forget: Any claims to #1 are premature. “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.) and “The Garfield Movie” (Sony) are in a battle for #1 for the four-day holiday, but each only estimates around $25 million for Friday to Sunday. (“Furiosa” is ahead.)
This is a holiday release date often chosen for a film that’s expected to be among the top three of the year. Unadjusted, neither “Furiosa” nor “Garfield” would be among the top 50 openers historically for this particular weekend; adjusting to current ticket prices, not even the top 100.
Current estimates for the four-day weekend are $101 million, but the crisis lies in the whole month. May is supposed to kick off summer and it has failed. It confirms that post- “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” box-office depression has no end in sight.

Everything about the making of 1954's "Godzilla" feels miraculous. The movie is a feat of filmmaking on every level, from its now aged yet still impressive practical effects to its bold nuclear threat story set in post-war Japan. The film utilized every trick in the book to bring its eponymous kaiju to life, from building a monster costume out of plastic and concrete to creating Godzilla's infamous roar by rubbing the loosened strings of a double bass.
The team behind the original "Godzilla" movie, which included director Ishirō Honda, special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, and the team at Toho Studios, got creative with their moviemaking at every opportunity. Still, no amount of creative problem-solving could save the cast and crew from the forces of nature, which apparently conspired against the production during some especially sweltering days in Japan's Mie prefecture.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, which released this year, boasted an incredible cinematic experience for the audiences. One of the primary highlights of the Dune franchise has been the Sandworms. The colossal spice-producing worms on the planet of Arrakis were hauntingly beautiful and provided an exceptional theater experience.
One might think that the sandworm must be the toughest part of the franchise based on Frank Herbert’s works. However, the mastermind behind both the Dune films, Villeneuve has claimed that the Desert Mouse was no cakewalk as well.

As if “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” isn’t enough of a caffeine boost, this week’s digital debuts include no fewer than four heart-pounding thrill rides. First up, a movie-star vehicle that doubles as an ode to stunt work.
The contender to watch this week: “The Fall Guy“
David Leitch‘s action comedy adapted from the ’80s TV show of the same name had all the makings of an early summer blockbuster: adrenaline-pumping stunts, charismatic lead turns from Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and generally favorable reviews. So why is Universal dropping it on VOD just 17 days after the release? Probably because “The Fall Guy” is perceived to be something of a flop. That line of thinking isn’t totally fair considering the movie has made $128.3 million and counting worldwide. Still, the studio expected more, especially because “The Fall Guy” seems like it will just barely recoup its budget in theaters.

Denis Villeneuve has flown through the ranks of Hollywood very quickly. Although he has been making massively successful and critically acclaimed projects for years, his name has only recently entered the mainstream media after he started working on the Dune series. Since then, his filmmaking has been appreciated for the gift that it is, and respect has been put in his name.

Recently, the director was asked about his favorite director, and his answer might shock many.
Who is Denis Villeneuve’s Favorite Director?
When it comes to Hollywood, there are several directors who are frequently talked about as some of the greatest. Among them, Martin Scorsese has been given the highest regard.

Exclusive: Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 came on tracking this Am and sources are telling us it’s bound to be the highest opening at the domestic box office year-to-date, inching out Dune Part Two ($82.5M) and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire ($80M) with a 3-day between $80M-$85M. Inside Out 2 opens over the Pixar tried-and-true Fathers Day weekend of June 14-16.
That’s a big comeback for Pixar in the post Covid era following the opening weekends of last summer’s Elemental ($29.6M) and 2022’s Toy Story spinoff Lightyear ($50.5M).
Inside Out 2 is trending with teen girls and moms. The sequel to the 2015 pic brings viewers back into the mind of the now-teenage Riley (Kensington Tallman) as her emotions try to keep up with her new feelings. While Riley still has her emotions of...

No one could blame the box office for needing an imaginary friend right now. For the first time in more than a decade — excluding the worst period of the Covid-19 crisis — no movie opening during the first six months of the year has come close to hitting the $100 million mark in its domestic launch.
In 2023, for example, three films had accomplished this feat by the time Memorial Day rolled around, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which debuted to $146.3 million in April on its way to earning $1.36 billion worldwide. To date, the top opening of the year belongs to March tentpole Dune: Part Two, which started off with $82.5 million, followed by $80 million for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In fact, it’s nearing the one-year anniversary of the last film to open to $100 million or more — Barbie, which sunnily smiled its way to a $162 million debut in the latter half of July.

Dune: Part Two picks up directly following the events of its predecessor, with young Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) taken in by the Fremen after being marooned in the desert of Arrakis. However, cinematographer Greig Fraser was not content to merely continue where he left off. After winning an Oscar for the first film, Fraser shuffled his tool bag by adding the Alexa 65, an assortment of colorful new glass and an infrared sequence set in a gladiator arena on Giedi Prime. It’s not surprising considering Fraser’s history of experimentation, which includes pioneering virtual production work on The Mandalorian and reintroducing […]

Henry Cavill passed on the iconic role of Superman to David Corenswet as part of the new reboot under James Gunn with Superman: Legacy slated to be the first film of the new universe. In the months that have followed since the announcement, a first look, release date, and various new details regarding the plot have surfaced that might just give an edge to the new flick.

On the other side of the coin, like any fresh start, there could be hiccups along the way. Despite Gunn’s vast experience in film-making and his determination to make his first movie in the new Dcu a grand success, there lies one reason for fans’ apprehension.

Even though the movie isn't hitting theaters for another two months, "Deadpool & Wolverine" is already breaking box office records. According to AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has set a new record for ticket sales in a single day for an R-rated movie for the theater chain. Given that AMC is the largest theater chain in the world, that's no small thing. It's a big enough thing to provide some hope after a slow start to the summer with the box office feeling like it's on life support. Marvel to the rescue, it seems.
Many big movies will open in May, June & July. Including Deadpool & Wolverine starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. Opens July 25. Some 200,000 movie fans have bought their AMC tickets already. This is more Day 1 ticket sales at AMC than for any other R-rated movie ever.... pic.twitter.com...

Vue Names Ian Fraser As Chair
Former Kwik Fit CEO Ian Fraser is the new Non-Exec Chairman of British cinema chain Vue. He succeeds Stella David, who is exiting to run gambling biz Entail. Fraser is currently working for infrastructure business M Group Services, but is best known as CEO of car servicing business Kwik Fit and COO of Orange UK. He takes up his new post on June 1, leading a non-exec board also including Katrina Cliffe, Henry Birch and Tom Singer and working alongside Vue CEO Tim Richards, CFO Alison Cornwell and COO Matt Eyre. Vue recently underwent a debt restructuring that saw about £50M ($63.5M) of debt converted into equity. This came after The Hollywood labor strikes, which hit cinema operators hard. However, the likes of Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 have helped the sector bounce back in 2024. UK-based Vue has well over 200 multiplexes in Europe and Taiwan.

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

House Harkonnen in the world of Dune had an interesting look when contrasted with the rest of the races in the story. While Fremen, Atreidai, and Corrinos looked more or less human, there was something bizarre about the stark colors that defined the Harkonnen look, giving them an entirely alien feel and vibe.

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies are truly the definition of "star-studded." Bleak though "Dune: Part Two" may be, the sequel in particular is packed with big-name actors, from stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya to Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, and Javier Bardem. Villeneuve even managed to coax Christopher Walken out of a four-year acting hiatus for his follow-up to 2021's "Dune." All of which amounted to a set that must have been intimidating for even seasoned actors.
Take Dave Bautista, for example. When shooting "Dune: Part Two," the wrestler-turned-actor was particularly intimidated by "Elvis" star Austin Butler, before being surprised at how warm and supportive he was. Even Butler himself admitted to being unnerved by the scale of the production, revealing in a behind-the-scenes clip that he was nervous about the shoot and that arriving on set felt like "the first day of school."

The title planet in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune" is a desolate desert world, only survivable if one has access to a stillsuit. A stillsuit is a head-to-toe garment that captures every microscopic piece of moisture that exudes from the wearer's body, filters and recycles it, and stores it for drinking. Yes, you drink your own sweat, urine, and feces in a stillsuit. When used properly, a wearer could subsist on their own fluids for weeks. In the novel, stillsuits also covered the wearer's face and head, wicking moisture from their hair and pores.
In the various film and TV adaptations of "Dune," including in Denis Villeneuve's most recent versions, the mask portion of a stillsuit is often replaced by a single breathing tube that extends under the wearer's nose. The nasal tube presumably gathered saliva and mucous, although it seems inefficient, given that the bulk of human saliva escapes from the mouth.

Dune: Part Two opened on March 1, 2024 and played for a guaranteed two to three weeks run on premium Imax giant screens.
But that wasn’t enough, and Denis Villeneuve’s epic for Warner Bros. that starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya got an extended run in Imax theaters in April, and not just because fans wanted to see the sequel a second time.
Imax CFO Natasha Fernandes put the extended premium screen run down to the benefits of appointment viewing — i.e. waiting to see Dune: Part Two in Imax theaters vs. standard movie exhibitors.
In the wake of Oppenheimer, Imax released a limited number of 70-millimeter prints of Dune: Part Two, a box office strategy that earned theater sellouts for weeks on end. This Dune: Part Two article contains spoilers.
For most casual fans and hardcore spice addicts alike, Dune: Part Two is a triumph. Not only did Denis Villeneuve get to complete his visionary adaptation of the first Frank Herbert Dune novel (phew!) but he was also able to infuse his cinematic trip to Arrakis with modern sensibilities. For longtime fans, Dune: Part Two is not the most faithful filmed version of the first book, but it’s much closer to the text than the 1984 version and feels bigger and grander than the (more faithful) 2000 miniseries version. To put it simply, Dune: Part Two, combined with Part One, is (probably) the best-filmed version of Dune we’re likely to ever get. Fidelity to a book is never entirely possible with adaptations, nor is it necessarily desirable. As Villeneuve told Den of Geek back in 2021: “When you adapt it’s an act of vandalism.

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has crossed box office milestones and set up director Denis Villenueve to keep the spice flowing with a forthcoming "Dune 3," we can forget all about claims that Frank Herbert's original "Dune" novel was "unfilmable." We no longer need to worry that Villeneuve's adaptation would be too arcane and dense with sci-fi lore to appeal to mass audiences. We can simply take in his "Dune" duology for the breathtaking spectacle that it is.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Sci-fi production design may well have peaked with "Blade Runner." This quote from director Christopher Nolan is a favorite of mine, simply because of how well it sums up the way in which Ridley Scott's 1982 classic, despite its fantastical sci-fi aesthetic, constructs a world that feels real:
"The atmosphere of 'Blade Runner' was also important, that feeling that there was this whole world outside the frame of the scene. You really felt there were things going on outside of those rooms where you've seen the film take place [...] Every film should have its own world, a logic and feel to it that expands beyond the exact image that the audience is seeing."
Nolan has previously spoken about the importance of establishing a "cinematic reality" — evoking a feeling in the audience that what they're seeing, regardless of its factual accuracy, is really happening. It's a trick I think...

Adding another star to his portfolio of acclaimed works, Barbarian director Zach Cregger has teamed up with Thanos actor Josh Brolin on a new venture which has the latter excited by all means. Following a recent appearance in Dune: Part Two, the 56-year-old has jumped into the limelight. Yet, he is hardly taking any time to speak it all, as the latest script for the aforementioned pair-up for a horror-thriller named Weapons, reportedly has sufficient teeth to get him moving.
Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck in Dune: Part Two
Marking the next horror thriller outing from a filmmaker who has already proven his mettle in the genre, Brolin shed out high praises for the former’s grand preparations. From assembling a strong cast to weaving an interconnected story, the actor opened up on how and why he is feeling excited for all the right reasons.

Few artists have etched imaginatively vivid, intricate Lovecraftian worlds like French comic artist Philippe Druillet, whose "The 6 Voyages of Lone Sloane" — arguably his magnum opus — emerges as the culmination of his intense innovation. This wild, sprawling comic takes place 800 years after an event dubbed The Great Fear and follows a wandering space traveler named Lone Sloane, whose capture by an otherworldly entity propels him on a mind-melting journey to beautiful, horrifying realms. Through Sloane's gaze, we are privy to worlds that are beyond comprehension, comprising alien citadels, technological landfills as far as the eye can see, and massive, obsessively detailed beings who exist between the states of man and machine. Druillet's storytelling hones in on traditional sci-fi space horror tropes taken to the extreme, where the cosmic artwork eclipses narration with its intention to shock and provoke.

Get ready for one of the most hyped Marvel releases of the year! Deadpool & Wolverine are on their way to tickle your funny bone (and possibly rip a few off) with their buddy anti-hero action comedy, and we finally have an official synopsis that sounds as nuts as the genre we mentioned above. And it seems like Marvel Studios is fully into this R-rated ride.
Ryan Reynolds and High Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine| Marvel Studios
Though the previous trailers have perfectly encapsulated the wild adventure fans can expect in the upcoming MCU flick, the various cameos and multiple plotlines might sound rather confusing. And it seems like the studio is just as clueless and quite fed up with Wade Wilson’s gore-filled shenanigans.
