Sodium ion batteries and lithium ion batteries were being developed in parallel until the lighter weight and higher energy density enabled lithium batteries to win out as portable devices grew in popularity. But that popularity is now working against lithium as sources of lithium are somewhat limited. So interest in sodium is growing for large scale energy storage because sodium is cheaper and universally prevalent.
