David Cronenberg always makes personal cinema, whether telepodding Jeff Goldblum into a human-sized pest in “The Fly” or asking James Spader to fuck a gaping flesh wound in “Crash.” The Canadian filmmaker will never tell you what makes his body horror classics so close to home, but he doesn’t feel it should matter to viewers anyway.
“For an average audience, they shouldn’t have to know that,” Cronenberg, behind oversized Saint Laurent sunglasses, told IndieWire at Cannes on a windy day atop the Jw Marriott. “They shouldn’t have to know that it has any basis in my reality at all. The movie has to stand on its own, and you can’t expect the audience to give you credit because it’s really happened to you.”
But his latest film “The Shrouds,” his seventh to compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and a co-production of fashion house Saint Laurent,...

Iconic directors named David haven’t been having the best luck with the Netflix streaming service lately. David Lynch recently revealed that Snootworld, an animated movie he hopes to make, had been rejected by Netflix, and now David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which just made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (you can read some of the first reactions Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode.
During a press conference at Cannes, Cronenberg said (according to The Hollywood Reporter) that he “envisioned the story working well as a series. He flew to Los Angeles to speak with two Netflix execs who financed the writing of a first episode – which they loved. But after the second, they did not want to go any further.” Cronenberg went on to say,...

Inspired by the loss of the director’s wife, “The Shrouds” is a grief story as only David Cronenberg would ever think to shoot one: Sardonic, unsentimental, and often so cadaverously stiff that the film itself appears to be suffering from rigor mortis, as if its images died at some point along their brief journey from the projector to the screen. And really, what else would you expect? I suppose it’s possible that the story’s deeply personal context might have spurred Cronenberg to push against the tender sterility of his recent features, or even dare to expose the soft underbelly that’s always been hiding inside his tumorous body of work and its many layers of scary-beautiful new flesh. If so, it almost immediately becomes clear that he had zero interest in accepting that invitation.

“How dark do you want to go?” The man asking that is named Karsh (Vincent Cassel), and he’s seated in a minimalist art-chic restaurant having lunch with a blind date. The one who’s really asking the question, though, is David Cronenberg, writer-director of “The Shrouds.” He’s been asking that question — to audiences — for his entire career, and to him the answer has always been the same: The darker the better.
Yet Cronenberg has a special brand of dark. In “The Shrouds,” Karsh is a businessman who produces industrial videos, with a sleek Toronto apartment that looks out at the Cn Tower, but he’s also a co-owner of the restaurant they’re sitting in, and the purveyor of what’s in the garden next to it: a cemetery where the gravestones are technological devices, and the corpses are draped in futuristic shrouds that allow you to peer...

Vincent Cassel and David Cronenberg are getting the band back together for The Shrouds, a disturbing meditation about grief, making peace with death, and watching your loved ones decompose in real time. Yeah, you heard me. The Shrouds teaser trailer offers a brief glimpse at Cronenberg’s next mind-bending thriller and the filmmaker’s first project with Cassel since teaming up for Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. According to Cronenberg, The Shrouds is a personal project for him, with parts of the story being autobiographical.
In The Shrouds, Vincent Cassell takes on the role of Karsh, “an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. David Cronenberg is known as one of the masters of body horror films, and the director is in a unique position to be one of three Cronenbergs who are partaking in this world. Indeed, his children are now filmmaking peers who specialize in the wretched and strange. Brandon Cronenberg has made splashes with his films Possessor and Infinity Pool. Now, Caitlin Cronenberg has stepped up with her directorial debut, Humane. David’s newest project, The Shrouds, is set to premiere at Cannes and The Film Stage has revealed previously unreleased images from the film as well as its new poster.

Actor Viggo Mortensen goes back behind the camera for the upcoming western, The Dead Don’t Hurt. Here’s a new trailer:
Viggo Mortensen made his directorial debut in 2020 with Falling, a drama about a fractious relationship between a father and son. He wrote the script and also starred alongside Lance Henriksen and Laura Linney.
Mortensen may be better known for intense performances in films like A History Of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method (all made with director David Cronenberg) and The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, but in recent years he’s built up a career behind the camera.
He’s now set to direct his second film, a western called The Dead Don’t Hurt. The synopsis reads as follows:
A story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship...

Michael Fassbender was born on 2nd April 1977 to a German father, Josef, and an Irish mother, Adele. When he was two, his family relocated to Killarney, a town in south-west Ireland. His parents managed a restaurant, with his father donning the hat of a chef.

Growing up in a multicultural household, Fassbender was exposed to both German and Irish culture. Despite this, he was primarily raised in Ireland and considers himself Irish. He has an older sister, Catherine, who is a noted neuropsychologist.
Fassbender’s interest in acting was stirred at a young age. At 19, he left home to study at the Drama Centre London. However, he dropped out in 1999 to perform in the play ‘Three Sisters’ with the Oxford Stage Company.

Christopher Hampton, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Father” and “Dangerous Liaisons,” is set to adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography “Leonardo Da Vinci” for Universal Pictures.
Universal Pictures had fiercely chased rights to the hot literary property six years ago, and was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. Now that Universal has finally secured those rights, it has tapped Hampton to pen the adaptation, which seems to be the perfect material for the Oscar winning writer whose movies typically lure A-list talent.
Hampton’s screenplays include “Atonement,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “A Dangerous Method” and more recently Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” which won two Oscars, for best adapted screenplay and actor (for Anthony Hopkins). Hampton has also been celebrated for his plays and musicals that have garnered two Tony Awards, an Olivier Award, and the New York Theatre Critics Circle Award.

The streamer will make room for its upcoming Christmas library by losing some of its horror-themed titles throughout the month, including “Stephen King's It,” most of its “Saw” franchise, and “Shaun Of The Dead.” Other major titles leaving the platform include Emma Stone’s breakthrough comedy “Easy A,” the Nora Ephron classic “Sleeping in Seattle,” and more.

Hollywood has tried for decades to make psychoanalysis compelling for the layman, whether that’s David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” to Bill Condon’s “Kinsey.” Director Matthew Brown (“The Man Who Knew Infinity”) is the latest to look at the density of psychology, philosophy and existentialism with his quasi-historical drama “Freud’s Last Session.”
The film tells the story of a fictional meeting between Sigmund Freud (Anthony Hopkins) and author C.S. Lewis (Matthew Goode). Freud is suffering from oral cancer while Lewis has embraced a newfound love for Christianity. The pair meet in the hopes of crafting some type of relationship and spend the day going back and forth on the everything from God to the meaning of life.

Viggo Mortensen is a three-time Oscar nominated performer who has been very picky with his projects, appearing only in a handful of movies in a 30-plus year career. But how many of his titles hold up as classics? Let’s take a look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958 in New York City, Mortensen made his big screen debut with a brief performance as an Amish farmer in “Witness” (1985). Supporting roles in “Carlito’s Way” (1993), “Crimson Tide” (1995), “G.I. Jane” (1997) and many others quickly followed. He achieved stardom in middle age playing the warrior Aragorn in Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, released in 2001, 2002 and 2003. His first Oscar bid as Best Actor came shortly thereafter for David Cronenberg‘s thriller “Eastern Promises” (2007), followed by nominations for “Captain Fantastic” (2016) and the Best Picture-winning “Green Book” (2018).

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

You know you are watching a David Cronenberg film within the first few minutes. His unique directorial vision and style are instantly recognizable. For over 50 years, Cronenberg has been pushing the boundaries of mainstream cinema with his unflinching explorations of the human body and psyche. His films delve into humanity’s deepest fears and darkest desires, all with his signature clinical precision and intellectual curiosity.
David Cronenberg Depostiphotos
Cronenberg emerged from the “Canuxploitation” era of Canadian B-movies in the 1970s to become one of the most influential auteurs in modern film. His early cult classics like Shivers and Scanners established his fascination with the physicality of human existence and all the ways our flesh and minds can mutate and transform. Cronenberg’s films are known for their disturbing body horror and surreal science fiction concepts, but at their core, they reveal fundamental truths about human nature and our relationship with our own physical being.

The latest thriller from legendary director David Cronenberg has officially finished filming! Star Vincent Cassel took to Instagram to mark the end of his work on Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, and you can see his post (which features an image of himself on set) at the bottom of this article.
Cassel (who worked with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method) takes on the role of Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. A few months ago, it was announced that Sandrine Holt (American Gigolo) had joined the cast of the Marvel / Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, where she’s playing Vanessa Fisk, a character who was played by Ayelet Zurer in the Netflix Daredevil series. Daredevil: Born Again is currently in production, but Holt has managed to fit another interesting project into her schedule: Deadline reports that Holt has signed on to play a role in writer/director David Cronenberg’s new thriller The Shrouds.

During a press conference at the San Sebastian film festival last September, writer/director David Cronenberg said his Crimes of the Future cast member Léa Seydoux would be playing a role in his next project, the afterlife thriller The Shrouds, joining previously announced star Vincent Cassel (who worked with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method). But while Cassel remains on board the project, Seydoux had to drop out and has been replaced by Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds). Also new to the cast is Guy Pearce (Memento).

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

“Eastern Promises” is not getting its promised sequel, according to actor Vincent Cassel.
The star said that a planned follow-up to David Cronenberg’s 2007 film has been canceled despite a script in the works.
“[Cronenberg] had a wonderful script,” Cassel told The Independent. “We were ready to do it and I don’t know why it collapsed. Now I don’t think it will happen anymore.”
A sequel was first in the works as of 2012, but a budget could not be agreed upon between Focus Features and Cronenberg, as the director told IndieWire. Since then, a follow-up to “Eastern Promises” has been discussed in multiple iterations — both with and without Cronenberg, including most recently Steven Knight returning to pen the breakout film “Small Dark Look” with Jason Statham. But there’s been no movement on that 2020 project, either.

No stranger to playing not-so-upstanding knights in shining armor, Jaime Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, has boarded "Virtue," a medieval gothic horror movie that HanWay Films is taking to the European Film Market. Founded in 1999, HanWay is a British sales, distribution, and marketing company that's managed to get a pretty eclectic batch of films made over the years. Their output ranges from celebrated documentaries to Oscar-nominated period dramas to a bevy of auteur projects from the likes of David Cronenberg ("A Dangerous Method"), Takashi Miike ("13 Assassins"), Jim Jarmusch ("Only Lovers Left Alive"), and many more.
If that's not enough to get you sitting up and taking notice, know that "Virtue" further pairs Coster-Waldau with Romola Garai, the star of "Atonement," "Suffragette," and one of the best BBC series you've never seen, Abi Morgan's 1950s-set TV journalism drama "The Hour." In a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter), HanWay Films CEO Gabrielle Stewart notes that,...

Are streamers killing indie cinema, or could Netflix be a lifeline for ground-breaking filmmaking? There are solid arguments for both sides, but David Cronenberg firmly believes that streaming services are the future. He knows that streaming has changed the way we watch movies, for better or worse, and has chosen to embrace this change rather than reject it. In fact, the writer-director's upcoming film "The Shrouds" was originally written as a Netflix series.
"The Shrouds" is set to star Vincent Cassel alongside Léa Seydoux. Seydoux starred in Cronenberg's 2022 film "Crimes of the Future" and has appeared in Bond movies and Wes Anderson movies alike. Cassel had his breakout role in the contemporary cult classic "La Haine" and has gone on to star in "Ocean's 12" and "Black Swan." He also collaborated with Cronenberg on "Eastern Promises" and "A Dangerous Method."

Sometimes, it takes a little while for a director to find their latest muse. David Cronenberg worked with many leading men throughout the 20th century — Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Irons, James Spader — but since 2005, his go-to star has been Viggo Mortensen.
The director and actor pair have made four films together. Their first was "A History of Violence," a tale of murder infesting small town America à la the Hitchcock classic "Shadow of a Doubt." Next came "Eastern Promises," a Russian gangster drama set in London. Mortensen was just a supporting player in "A Dangerous Method," playing Sigmund Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Carl Jung and Keira Knightly as Sabina Spielrein. For their latest collaboration "Crimes of the Future," released in 2022, Cronenberg went back to his body horror roots. Mortensen plays Saul Tenser, a man who spontaneously grows new organs and has his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux) surgically remove the aberrant organs in avant-garde art shows.

The body horror auteur returns to favourite themes, if not the peak of his powers, as Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart star in this playfully grisly tale of surgery as the new sex
David Cronenberg’s latest feature shares a title with an experimental film he made in 1970. In the wake of the original Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg would effectively invent, refine and then move on from “‘body horror” cinema, leaving a genre-defining canon of fantasy films that used the mutations of the flesh to discuss matters of life and death. Since 1988’s Dead Ringers, the Canadian auteur’s preoccupations have been more psychological (notwithstanding the mugwumps of Naked Lunch and the quirky genre return of eXistenZ); from the sexual pathology of Crash, through the stagey Freud/Jung melodrama of A Dangerous Method to the biting Hollywood satire of Maps to the Stars.

Cronenberg will receive the award at a gala on September 21 in San Sebastian’s Victoria Eugenia Theatre, followed by the screening of his latest movie, Crimes of the Future.
The dystopian drama, which stars Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart, premiered in competition in Cannes last month, where it was an audience favorite. Critics hailed it as a return to form for Cronenberg, who is considered a pioneer of body horror and auteur sci-fi. From his earliest work, in Shivers (1975), Rabid (1977) and The Brood (1979), the Canadian director subverted B-movie horror tropes to tell disturbing tales of psychological torment Later films, including Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), Dead Ringers (1988), Naked Lunch (1991), and eXistenZ (1999), use the science fiction genre to provide a subversive critique of modern,...

Fans of intelligent, thought-provoking, and visionary films that just happen to have strange new appendages growing out of the human body were thrilled when it was revealed David Cronenberg was returning to body horror with Crimes of the Future. Further, the new thriller marks the end of the Canadian director’s eight-year hiatus from filmmaking as well.
They had reason to cheer loud, as the movie really does feature bizarre, unidentifiable organs being removed from the body of pain-wracked performance artist Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) in front of live audience—a clear nod to early films like The Brood, Videodrome, and The Fly that put Cronenberg on the map as a master of the body horror subgenre.
Cronenberg’s career has taken him down a number of other avenues artistically, with many of his films evolving away from the visceral gut-punch of his early work, but he’s never fully left genre material behind.

David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” opened for general audiences this weekend without exactly lighting up the box office, which no one expected it to do.
The filmography of Cronenberg has been one that has brought unadulterated respect from cinephiles, while never having the populist appeal to breakout into huge commercial translations or awards attention. While it’s never too late to become an Oscar darling, unless the King of Body Horror is going to make a drastic switch in style and genre, it would be criminal for him to have no industry acknowledgment as a prolific auteur. The honorary Oscar is the perfect tool for such a distinction.
Despite telling an ambitious allegory of art, autism, global warming, awards season, relationships and perhaps a dozen others that can be picked out upon multiple viewings, “Crimes of the Future” is far too cerebral for mainstream awards attention.

Watching a David Cronenberg film can be a visceral experience. Though Cronenberg's three previous collaborations with Viggo Mortensen, "A History of Violence," "Eastern Promises," and "A Dangerous Method," have seen him working in a more mainstream mode, their latest, "Crimes of the Future," has the 79-year-old director returning to his body horror roots, having lost none of his edge.
When "Crimes of the Future" made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, there were reports of walkouts, and Cronenberg himself said he expected as much due to the movie's graphic content. The plot, per the official trailer synopsis, involves Mortensen's "celebrity performance...

A bout of hysteria took over the Cannes Film Festival in 1999 when the competition jury, led by David Cronenberg, awarded a little film called “Rosetta” the Palme d’Or over Pedro Almodóvar’s emotional epic “All About My Mother.” The story — now recently resurfaced in the press — goes that Cronenberg and his peers, including André Téchiné, George Miller, Holly Hunter, and Jeff Goldblum, went out of their way to award another film over Almodóvar’s eventual Oscar winner.
But the truth is, “Rosetta” was the last film to play the festival that year, and so many journalists tipping their Palme predictions in the direction of Almodóvar didn’t actually see the Dardennes’ slice-of-life drama, throwing prognosticators’ Cannes crystal balls out of orbit.
Cronenberg himself previously debunked the made-up feud in a 2014 Vulture interview, noting that the final decision was unanimous. But during a Cannes 2022 conversation promoting Cronenberg’s new competition entry “Crimes of the Future,...
