The prevailing theme in this episode and this arc as a whole is the sheer power of protective instinct. Illustrations of the strength and influence of familial bonds continue to be the most effective and emotional material in the series. The death of Rengoku's mother inspired him while simultaneously breaking his father. The tragic situation coupled with ensuing abuse from his drunkard father reinforced the bond between Rengoku and his brother. The way that flashback was delivered really fleshed out Rengoku's character and his motivations (those who are blessed with gifts should feel obligated to use them to serve those less fortunate).
Rengoku's moral victory deeply affects Tanjiro, as their character motivations are so similar. The difference is that Rengoku is effectively shown to be a stronger and more mature role model for Tanjiro. His protective instinct was inspired directly by his sickly mother's wishes while Tanjiro's was inspired by the fear of losing the last of his family. Witnessing Rengoku's tragic end, we see Tanjiro completely give in to his frustration for the first time in the series. He's tortured by his powerlessness in the situation, and furious with Akaza for fleeing the scene after preaching about his deep love of combat. While Rengoku succeeds in saving every passenger on the Mugen train, this is the first time our protagonists experience a crushing defeat. It was definitely the most raw and gut-wrenching moment of the show so far, and was honestly better than the already exceptional Hinokami for me (no deus ex-machina technique appearances for the protagonists, and no "fake out" deaths for the antagonist).
This episode consisted of the most impressive animation I've ever seen, and the return of the Hinokami OST really tied everything together. Episodes like this are Demon Slayer at it's best. Incredible combat scenes, compelling character dynamics, and raw emotion heightened by superb animation and a moving score that sends shivers down my spine. It's an easy 10/10, and probably the best episode of the entire show so far.
