It's no secret that the 2024 box office has been off to a slow start. Moreover, the theatrical side of the movie business as a whole has been trying to figure out what the long-term future looks like in the Covid era. The recovery from the 2020 shutdowns has been slower than expected and theaters are in need of wins, wherever they can be found. To that end, a somewhat unlikely savior has emerged: TV shows.
That may sound odd, but yes, products made for the small screen have increasingly been making their way to the big screen in recent years, and the results are encouraging. This year alone has seen the continued success of the faith-based TV show "The Chosen." With the help of Fathom Events, the crowd-funded series about the life of Jesus Christ has seen its entire fourth season brought to movie theaters multiple times in several-episode chunks. This weekend saw the return of the iconic character Willy Wonka to the big screen with the prequel Wonka featuring a Golden Globe nominated performance by Timothy Chalamet. While the film didn’t quite get to the heights we thought it could reach in our Thursday predictions, it still was able to carve out a solid $39 million for a first place finish. This is a movie that will have tremendous play throughout the holidays and into the new year. Not only are reviews leaning positive (with a 7/10 from our own Chris Bumbray), but the film also secured an A- cinemascore alongside a 91% audience score. In the frenzy of holiday shopping, many people are likely waiting for the madness to die down before heading to theaters to see the film which means this one should see a solid hold in the weeks to come.

Director Steven Spielberg and his version of the classic West Side Story claimed the top spot from Disney’s Encanto for the box-office weekend, though it only did so by the slim margin of $1.1 million.
Spielberg’s film made $10.5 million over the weekend, which was enough to land it the number one slot of this weekend’s top ten. Although that might not have been the big opening weekend the studio had expected for West Side Story, it still finished ahead of last weekend’s top film, Encanto, which brought in $9.4 million. This gives the latest Disney film a three-week total of $71.3 million. As usually happens when a new top film is crowned, all of the films from last week slip at least one place in the rankings. This fate befell Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which finished in the third spot this weekend with $7.1 million, giving it a four-week total of $112 million.

Well, that was one of the most uneventful weekends at the box office in some time. Unless you were someone who was particularly excited to see "Christmas With the Chosen: The Messengers," which cracked the top five with $4.1 million this weekend, it was pretty quiet, serving as something of a calm before the end-of-the-year storm. Even so, "Encanto," "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," and "Eternals" passed minor milestones over the past few days. Let's dig in.
During a "it isn't much, but it'll do" sort of weekend, Disney's acclaimed musical "Encanto" topped the box office for the second week in a row with...

Without any new releases to pose a threat, Disney’s animated musical fable “Encanto” has again notched the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts.
In its second weekend of release, “Encanto” has collected $12.38 million from 3,980 venues in the U.S. and Canada. That marks a 54% drop from its debut and pushes the film’s two-week total to $57.6 million domestically.
A decline of roughly 50% between its first and second weekend is in line with Disney’s recent Thanksgiving releases, such as 2016’s “Moana” (down 50%), 2017’s “Coco” (down only 45%) 2018’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (down 54%) and 2019’s “Frozen II” (down 59%). Prior Disney animated features were able to conjure stronger starts at the domestic box office, however, those films weren’t playing in theaters during a pandemic. By Covid-19 standards, “Encanto” is faring well at the box office. The family-friendly adventure, which boasts songs by “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, will land on...
