- A group of people gather at an Oxford college to compete in a quiz contest for a large prize. One of them, an annoying, know-it-all womaniser is murdered. Due to his personality quite a few people would loathe him, but murder him?
- Six couples arrive at out-of-term Chaucer College for a quiz weekend with a five thousand pound prize. One of the contestants, womanizing know-all Ethan Croft, is murdered. Another, Robyn Strong, an old flame of Ethan's, is disappointed that he failed to recognize her. Ethan was a brilliant linguist but was sacked from the college years earlier after an affair with a student who is now married to another quizzer. Meanwhile, Eve, Robyn's quiz partner, is the next victim, after she has been heard arguing with Ethan. Passion, however, is not the motive, the killer being one whose guilty secret was exposed by Ethan's language skills over a past business transaction - with at least two suspects in the frame.—don @ minifie-1
- On a bank holiday weekend, Lewis and Hathaway find themselves trying to solve the murder of Ethan Croft, a participant in a weekend quiz competition being held at an Oxford college. Croft, a former Oxford student, had partnered with a fellow teacher and they were in competition against 5 other two-person teams for a £5000 prize. Croft was excellent at the game and also had a roving eye, much to the chagrin of his wife, and is remembered by many as someone who left Oxford under something of a cloud. There are several suspects and the death of a second contestant doesn't add much to the police's efforts to determine what is going on. Hathaway is convinced that the motive has something to do with sex, but Lewis disagrees and believes the solution to the crimes is to be found in Croft's past history.—garykmcd
