Judging by its trailer, "Barber" is the story of a private investigator out to find a missing girl. A down-and-out protagonist, in over his head, stumbles onto a larger conspiracy that goes all the way to the top. If you've seen it once, you've seen it a thousand times, right? Not necessarily.
That may be the spine of "Barber," but half of the story is a family drama. The titular Pi has a loving relationship with his teenage daughter, and is trying to navigate how to raise her with his ex-wife. And instead of being set in the seedy streets of Los Angeles, the neo-noir capital of the world, this one's set in Ireland, a locale that's far from typical for this subgenre. Those two elements are enough to make this movie stand out from its contemporaries.
Add to that the fact that Aidan Gillen, the wonderful character actor from "Game of Thrones,...

Aidan Gillen returns to the podcast (first time: Episode 40). You know him from some of the most beloved shows of the century: Game of Thrones, The Wire, Peaky Blinders, to name a few. Now he stars in the Irish neo-noir film Barber, where he plays a private investigator hired by a wealthy widow to find her missing granddaughter. He talks about why he doesn’t look at the lines until the day before shooting, how his latest venture on the stage affected his work, why he still doesn’t like rehearsal for film, what bothers him about an “actor-centric” production, and […]

For better or worse, some performances in very specific projects will follow an actor for the rest of their life. Aidan Gillen is well aware of this not entirely unflattering phenomenon, given that he's been fortunate enough to be part of some of the biggest franchises in the world: from scene-stealing turns in "Game of Thrones" to "Peaky Blinders" to "The Dark Knight Rises." Needless to say, his incredibly brief but memorable role as a CIA agent in the opening sequence of Christopher Nolan's trilogy-capping blockbuster will continue to live on in internet memes for as long as we have an internet. But, sometimes, the universe enjoys throwing unexpected coincidences at us, and this certainly holds true for Gillen's work on "The Dark Knight Rises" and the hit series "Peaky Blinders" -- both of which also happen to star a certain actor by the name of Tom Hardy.

Filipino filmmaker Jun Robles Lana is making his second appearance at Toronto International Film Festival with Your Mother’s Son, which is receiving its world premiere in the Centrepiece section.
Co-scripted by Lana and Elmer Gatchalian, the film tells the story of a hard-working mother and her delinquent son whose relationship is challenged when she invites one of her students to move into their home, so he can escape his violent father. Initially, it seems the son is suffering from a severe case of Oedipus complex, but as the film progresses, a more shocking tale of abuse of power and sexual dynamics begins to unfold.
Sue Prado (Barber’s Tales) plays the mother, with Kokoy de Santos (Gameboys) playing the son, and Elora Españo and Miggy Jimenez rounding out the cast. Lana, Perci Intalan and Ferdinand Lapuz produced the film through The IdeaFirst Company, Octobertrain Films, Quantum Films and Cineko Productions.

Rich Strike has come in as the surprise winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby. The horse’s triumph was historic in nature, coming as the second-biggest upset in the 148-year history of the race.
Rich Strike only entered the lineup for the Kentucky Derby on Friday, after the dropout of Ethereal Road, coming into the race at 80-1 odds of winning. The only Kentucky Derby competitor prevailing over tougher odds was Donerail—who entered as a longshot at 91-1 odds, way back in 1913.
Rick Strike’s win marked the first at the Kentucky Derby for jockey Sonny Leon and trainer Eric Reed. Epicenter took second place, with Zandon finishing in third. Other competitors this year included Simplification (#4), Mo Donegal (#5), Barber Road (#6), Tawny Port (#7), Smile Happy (#8), Tiz the Bomb (#9), Zozos (#10), Classic Causeway (#11), Taiba (#12), Crown Pride (#13), Happy Jack (#14), Messier (#15), White Abarrio (#16), Charge It (#17), Cyberknife (#18), Pioneer of Medina (#19) and Summer Is Tomorrow (#20).
