Acclaimed actress Glenn Close displayed her good sense of humor when she shared a series of selfies on Instagram that showed her face bruised from a recent medical procedure.
In the candid close-up shots, Close playfully poses for the camera with tousled hair and a cozy cardigan. Alongside the images, she wrote, “I think this is going to be a particularly Good day,” in anticipation of her 77th birthday.
She acknowledged the bruises and explained that she had undergone a minor procedure to address a small break in her nose, but emphasized that she still felt as beautiful as ever.
While Close’s Instagram account typically features scenic landscapes and occasional political posts, the actress recently shared a video of herself making goofy faces.
“It’s morning in a new place away from home. I’m wishing I didn’t have to wash and brush my hair. #bedhead,” she wrote in the caption.

Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman‘s performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

Upon securing a spot in the 2024 Best Supporting Actress Oscar lineup, Jodie Foster (“Nyad”) officially shattered the Academy Awards record for longest span between fourth and fifth acting nominations. Following her two Best Actress wins for “The Accused” (1989) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1992), she had last been recognized in that category for “Nell” (1995), making for a general nomination gap of 29 years. Coincidentally, she took this particular distinction from fellow “Silence of the Lambs” winner Anthony Hopkins, who waited 22 years between his supporting bids for “Amistad” (1998) and “The Two Popes” (2020).
Previously, the female record for longest wait for a fifth nomination was 12 years, as shared by Julianne Moore and Frances McDormand. Considering gaps between any two consecutive acting nominations, Foster ranks well behind overall record holder Judd Hirsch, whose first and second career notices for “Ordinary People” (1981) and “The Fabelmans” (2023) came 42 years apart. His female counterpart is Helen Hayes (39 years...

The 2023 Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress are Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”), Hong Chau (“The Whale”), Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and Stephanie Hsu (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Our odds currently indicate that Bassett (18/5) will emerge victorious, followed in order of likelihood by Condon (37/10), Curtis (19/5), Hsu (9/2), and Chau (9/2).
For the first time since 2012, all five of the women in this lineup are new to the category. The last instance involved winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help”) and nominees Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), Jessica Chastain (“The Help”), Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”), and Janet McTeer (“Albert Nobbs”). For every actor that wins multiple Oscars, there are others who, no matter how much they put into their roles and how much campaigning they do, just can’t make the conversion into winning their first Academy Award.
More often than not, it’s just a matter of bad timing, like being nominated for an Oscar in the same year as one of the four actors mentioned above. There’s just no way of knowing when you’re taking on a role or shooting a film or even once a movie gets out to the critics, how things might change in the time before Oscar night.

Bradley Cooper is a triple threat at the Academy Awards, being nominated a total of nine times in the acting, producing and writing categories. However, he has yet to take home the golden statuette. His most recent bid was for producing the Best Picture nominee “Nightmare Alley,” which lost to “Coda” at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. At nine career losses, that means Cooper has quietly now surpassed legendary performers Glenn Close and Peter O’Toole, both of whom failed to win any of their eight bids (all for acting).
Cooper’s three Oscar nominations in the Best Actor race came for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), “American Sniper” (2014) and “A Star Is Born” (2018), plus he earned one notice in Best Supporting Actor for “American Hustle” (2013). Mia Wasikowska will take on the lead role in “Little Joe” director Jessica Hausner’s cult thriller “Club Zero,” Variety can reveal.
The Australian actor will portray an unusual schoolteacher in Hausner’s second English-language film, which begins shooting in the U.K. and Austria in July.
Wasikowska was most recently seen in Mia Hansen-Løve’s Cannes-premiering film “Bergman Island.”
In “Club Zero,” Wasikowska’s teacher takes a job at an elite school and forms a strong bond with five students — a relationship that eventually takes a dangerous turn.
Discussing the film at the Doha Film Institute’s Qumra event last year, Hausner described the film as “a lot about eating,” relating to eating disorders and “eating behaviors.”
This will be Hausner’s sixth feature. Her last film, “Little Joe,” was in competition in Cannes in 2019 and won the best actress award for Emily Beecham. The Austrian director, who made her debut with “Lovely Rita,...

Produced by Denis Ivanov and Sentsov, the film centers on a young man nicknamed “Rhino,” who starts out as a petty thief before rising in the ranks of Ukraine’s criminal underworld in the 1990s. Rhino has only known power and cruelty, but with nothing left to lose, could he finally find a chance at redemption?
The film stars newcomer Serhii Filimonov as Rhino, alongside Yevhen Grigoriev and Alina Zievakova. Crew members include Academy Award-nominated director of photography Bogumił Godfrejów.
“Rhino” was awarded best project and best pitching at the Sofia Meetings, and production was originally planned for 2014. However, Oleh was arrested by the Russian Federal Security Service in May 2014 and unlawfully sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, giving rise to a global campaign for his release.

Glenn Close is set to star in the upcoming film “Brothers.”
Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind the movie, has not divulged a single detail about “Brothers,” other than the fact that Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage will portray siblings. To that end, it’s unknown who Close will play.
However, sources say the project is in the vein of Ivan Reitman’s 1988 buddy comedy “Twins,” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito.
“Palm Springs” filmmaker Max Barbakow is directing “Brothers” from a script by Macon Blair and Etan Cohen. Blair was initially set to direct the movie before duties were passed to Barbakow.
Mad Chance’s Andrew Lazar will produce alongside Brolin via his company Brolin Productions and Dinklage through his shingle Estuary Films.

With her nomination for “Hillbilly Elegy,” Glenn Close extended her record as the living actor with the most Oscar nominations (8) without a win. The Best Supporting Actress bid comes two years after her surprise loss for “The Wife,” for which she had won a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Critics Choice Award. She has not repeated this precursor success for “Hillbilly Elegy,” but her overdue narrative still looms large.
Close’s competition at the Oscars is Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”). These are the first Oscar nominations for Bakalova, Seyfried and Youn, while Colman prevailed up in lead in 2019 for “The Favourite,” edging out Close.

The films up for the 2021 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Emma,” “Hillbilly Elegy,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Mank,” and “Pinocchio.” Our current odds show that “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (16/5) is favored to win, followed in order by “Hillbilly Elegy” (4/1), “Pinocchio” (4/1), “Mank” (9/2), and “Emma” (9/2).
Mark Coulier (“Pinocchio”) has already won this award twice for his work in “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2015). He is now one of 18 makeup artists to be nominated by the academy at least three times. Glenn Close’s career is at a crossroads once again during awards season after earning her eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. She has the dishonor of joining a club of two other members who also competed in both contests for the same role: Amy Irving in 1983’s “Yentl” and James Coco in 1981’s “Only When I Laugh.

March Madness hasn’t started yet, but there’s already a new member of the elite eight. Glenn Close received her eighth Oscar nomination on Monday, in Best Supporting Actress for “Hillbilly Elegy,” making her just the sixth performer with exactly eight bids.
Close joins Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, Peter O’Toole, Geraldine Page and Denzel Washington as eight-time nominees. All won at least once except for O’Toole, who is the most nominated performer without a victory — a dubious title Close would share if she loses next month. She’s currently the most nominated living performer without a win. Only eight people have more nominations, the most, of course, being 21, accrued by Meryl Streep.

Glenn Close is now in the double digits at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The actress just scored her 10th nomination from her fellow actors for her supporting performance as Mamaw in “Hillbilly Elegy.” The last time she was nominated, Close won for her lead turn in “The Wife,” which helped support a potential Oscar win that didn’t ultimately pan out. After losing the Golden Globe for “Hillbilly Elegy,” a SAG win might be exactly the boost she needs to become a frontrunner for the Oscar again.
Close’s competition at the SAG Awards includes Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Olivia Colman (“The Father”), Yuh-Jung Youn (“Minari”) and Helena Zengel (“News of the World”). These are the first SAG nominations for Bakalova, Youn and Zengel, while Colman has now collected seven nominations in just three years, with concurrent bids this year for “The Crown” both individually and as part of the ensemble.

Amy Adams has never brought home a SAG award for an individual performance despite six tries over 13 years. She has a shot at changing that this year now that her work in Netflix’s “Hillbilly Elegy” has resulted in her second Best Actress nomination and 10th bid overall.
Adams faces off against Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”). Davis snagged the award for “The Help” in 2012 and McDormand has won it twice, for “Fargo” in 1997 and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in 2018. Mulligan has competed for Best Actress once, while Kirby never has, although she was recognized as part of “The Crown” ensemble in 2017 and 2018.

This season saw female actors embody characters that were often unpredictable — and audiences and critics embraced them. Viola Davis stars in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” as a woman who knows her worth and doesn’t apologize for it — practically unheard of for a Black woman in 1927. Andra Day also plays a singer who doesn’t conform to expectations in “The People vs. Billie Holiday,” with tragic results. Then there are characters such as Frances McDormand’s Fern in “Nomadland,” who leaves her life behind to live on the road in her van, and Carey Mulligan’s Cassandra who quits medical school to exact revenge in “Promising Young Woman.”
Overall it’s been a great year for a wide range of women’s stories; and the actors have had interesting journeys getting there.
Some actors have made a career of defying the expectations society has about how a woman should behave.

“Hillbilly Elegy” isn’t exactly one of the critics’ favorite films of 2020, but that might not stop it from receiving multiple Oscars. Glenn Close is expected to land her eighth nomination for her performance as Mamaw in the film, following bids at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and some are speculating it may finally be time to give her the Oscar. The actress may actually be aided by the potential presence of “Hillbilly Elegy” in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling lineup, as it made the 10-film shortlist and should be a sure thing for a nomination — it’s in second place in Gold Derby’s odds — considering the heavy makeup on both Close and co-star Amy Adams.

Glenn Close is almost certain to reap a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for her scene-stealing role as Mamaw in the Netflix flick “Hillbilly Elegy.” This will be her eighth trip to the Academy Awards. But this three-timer at both the Emmys and Tonys is still without an Oscar. She last lost in 2019 to Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”). That gave her the dubious distinction of racking up the most defeats in Academy Awards history without ever scoring a win.
Closes’s pal Meryl Streep has endured far more losses. She holds the Oscar nominations record with 21 bids and was defeated in 18 of those races. But Streep has three Academy Awards on her mantle (a supporting trophy for “Kramer vs. Kramer” and two lead awards for “Sophie’s Choice” and “The Iron Lady”). That last win came at the expense of Close, who was on nomination #6 for “Albert Nobbs.”

You’d call it crazy; she’d call it winning: Viola Davis could get away with not one but two individual Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, for Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder.” And should she pull this off, she’d join an elite group of actors who scored dual individual noms for a film and a regular TV series in the same year.
Only three have managed to do it so far: Maggie Smith, who was nominated for her supporting turn in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” (2012) and for TV drama actress for “Downton Abbey” in 2013; Glenn Close, who was nominated for “Albert Nobbs” (2011) in lead actress and “Damages” in TV drama actress in 2012; and Helen Hunt, who won for her lead performance in “As Good as It Gets” (1997) and was nominated for “Mad About You” in TV comedy actress...

Seven-time Academy Award-nominee Glenn Close is back in the Oscar mix for her turn in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy,” now streaming on Netflix. All eyes were on Close last year to finally take home Best Actress for “The Wife,” but alas that honor went to Olivia Colman for “The Favourite.” Speaking with film critic Peter Travers for his ABC News special “Popcorn,” Close had some candid thoughts about the Oscars, pointing to the Best Actress race in 1999 as an example that didn’t “make sense.”
“I honestly feel that to be nominated by your peers is about as good as it gets,” Close said. “And then, I’ve never understood how you could honestly compare performances, you know? I remember the year Gwyneth Paltrow won over that incredible actress who was in ‘Central Station’ and I thought, ‘What?’ It doesn’t make sense.”

A wowza 62% say it’s about time Glenn Close (‘Hillbilly Elegy’) finally wins an Oscar [Poll Results]
Let’s hope this is the awards season when Glenn Close can hang up her title as the most-nominated living actor to have never won with seven Oscar nominations for her acting skills. Her past opportunities include three supporting tries for 1982’s “The World According to Garp,” 1983’s “The Big Chill.” After she moved on to playing leads, she ended up vying for 1987’s “Fatal Attraction,” 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons,” 2011’s “Albert Nobbs” and 2018’s “The Wife.”
But thanks to director Ron Howard, Close might just get another shot with “Hillbilly Elegy,” based on a bestselling memoir about an Appalachian family and the social problems they face in a community where poverty is a way of life as low-paying, back-breaking jobs are disappearing. As a result, alcoholism, drug addiction, domestic violence and abuse are rampant in the Ohio city of Middletown. Close plays Mawmaw, a tough but loving grandmother to J.

Which long-denied previously Oscar-nominated actresses will be in the running in the supporting category this Oscar season? The crystal ball is a bit fuzzy as the state of movie exhibition remains in flux while the Covid-19 crisis keeps theaters shuttered. It is hard to know which high-profile films will actually open. It also might explain why streaming giant Netflix might just monopolize much of the ballot spots.
But given that there are several major titles with large ensemble casts, expect a rich crop of overdue female candidates in second-tier roles to vie for their first-ever win. Here are the possibilities for now:
Glenn Close — This somehow trophy-less talent co-stars in Ron Howard‘s “Hillbilly Elegy” as Mawmaw, the matriarch of an Appalachian family living in Ohio. Either she could finally hang up her title as being the most-nominated living actor to have never won an Oscar with seven nominations or...

“I really think it helped to have a theater background. I think it’s the best training in the craft of acting that one can have,” reveals Glenn Close about her teaming up with fellow Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce as a married couple in “The Wife.” Close has already won a Golden Globe, SAG Award and Critics’ Choice Award for her role as Joan Castleman in the Sony Pictures Classics film. “I feel like Cher in that John Patrick Shanley film ‘Moonstruck’ right now,” proclaimed Lady Gaga upon accepting her Golden Globe for “American Horror Story: Hotel” in 2016. Little did she know how true that may be just three years later. Gaga has earned some of the best reviews of her career for playing Ally, a singer on the rise, in “A Star Is Born.” This attention has translated into early Oscar buzz for 2019, with some declaring her the frontrunner to win Best Actress even over much more seasoned actresses. One of those thespians is Glenn Close, who may see a bit of history repeating 31 years after losing for one of her most iconic roles.

Glenn Close is attempting to win her first Oscar with “The Wife,” but she could also celebrate a first at the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards. If she prevails at both ceremonies, it’d be her first Globe and SAG for film.

“The Wife” opened on August 17 at the intersection of a couple of movie industry crossroads. One of those is Glenn Close, who is already the subject of discussion over whether this role will finally bring the actress a long-overdue Oscar after six previous nominations. The other is the #MeToo movement, which resonates in the film’s portrait of a woman whose experiences and indignities are kept hidden behind the public’s adoration of her Great Artist husband (Jonathan Pryce).

Just because a movie or a celebrity wins an Oscar, that doesn't mean the win was deserved. While the Academy Awards are seen as the capstone to awards season -- and one of the highest honors in the business -- we all know that stars and movies get snubbed or overlooked all the time.

In 2015, Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel stuck two fingers up at the film industry with the Paolo Sorrentino directed Youth. It proved to the whole industry just because you’ve reached a certain age doesn’t mean you’ve lost your talent or appeal to the movie going public. In fact over the last few years we have seen actors such as Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Robert De Niro all prove they are all digging their heels in and not going anywhere.
Now it’s time for the ladies to get in on the act with Golden Globe-winner Dame Joan Collins – who we last saw make an appearance in last year’s Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie – Oscar nominee Pauline Collins (The Last Dragon Slayer, Albert Nobbs) and Italian heartthrob Franco Nero (Django, Django Unchained) all starring in the upcoming feel-good comedy, The Time of Their Lives...

They may no longer be a couple, but Liev Schreiber still has a big fan in Naomi Watts.
A month after the two announced their split, the actress attended the opening night of Schreiber’s eagerly anticipated new Broadway play Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Sunday.
Watts, 48, kept her look understated and monochromatic for the evening, walking the red carpet in a black skirt and coat and a patterned white shirt.
Schreiber, 49, took to Instagram shortly before the show, flashing a thumbs-up along with the caption “Happy Opening Night to this extraordinary company! @liaisonsbway #lesliaisonsdangereuses.”
