Fat Joe is stopping at nothing to help Puerto Rico recover from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria last month. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of “The Florida Project,” which has just started its platform release across the country, what is the greatest child performance in a film?
Jordan Hoffman (@JHoffman), The Guardian, Vanity Fair
I can agonize over this question or I can go at this Malcolm Gladwell “Blink”-style. My answer is Tatum O’Neal in “Paper Moon.” She’s just so funny and tough, which of course makes the performance all the more heartbreaking. She won the freaking Oscar at age 10 for this and I’d really love to give a more deep cut response, but why screw around? Paper Moon is a perfect film and she is the lynchpin.

In the broad scope of anime history, it would be inaccurate (and maybe even a little unfair) to call “Neo Yokio” an unprecedented series. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a batch of six TV episodes with quite the same subject matter overlap as the latest Netflix animated effort. Starring the voice talents of Jaden Smith and executive produced by Ezra Koenig, “Neo Yokio” is a hyperspecific blend of neo-futurist metropolises, prep school drama, and high-society intrigue, all with a dash of field hockey and weekend jaunts to the Hamptons. The result is a bespoke anime that’s confounding at times, but always in search of new layers to its insulated universe.
Wisely, “Neo Yokio” doesn’t spend more than a narrated intro explaining the origins of its title city, an alternate futurist New York of sorts. Instead it revels in a slew of off-kilter details in the life...

Conor McGregor might not have come out on top in Saturday night’s match against Floyd Mayweather, but it didn’t stop him from celebrating.
In a video posted by TMZ, the 29-year-old Irish pro fighter is in high spirits at Las Vegas’ Encore Beach Club at Night, dressed in a festive suit with his home country’s flag proudly draped over his shoulders.
“It didn’t go our way, but we still party like it did go our way,” McGregor addressed the cheering crowd while tunes like Fat Joe‘s “All the Way Up” and Notorious B.I.G.‘s “Hypnotize” play in the background.

It’s been 20 years since Garth Brooks joined the ranks of Diana Ross, Elton John and James Taylor, performing live in Central Park in New York City. On Aug. 7, 1997, an estimated 980,000 people crowded the iconic park’s North Meadow to watch the country superstar perform a set list of hits, including “Callin’ Baton Rouge” and “Friends in Low Places.”
Not only was the landmark concert massive in size, it was a showcase of Brooks’ vigilant perfectionism and the reliable, demo-crossing appeal he’s maintained for years.
In the days leading up to the event, Brooks gave Et some insight into how one mentally prepares for a performance on this scale, which was not only free to concertgoers but being broadcast live on HBO. Nicki Minaj fans got a pleasant surprise earlier this year when the Queens rapper dropped three — yes, three — new tracks with plenty of responses to Remy Ma’s Internet-breaking diss track “ShETHER.”
Minaj, 34, reunited with her old crew, Drake and Lil Wayne, for “No Frauds,” a punchline-filled track that sent Barbz everywhere reeling.

As a general rule, it's probably best not to mess with Nicki Minaj. In case you missed it, the "Super Bass" rapper has been super blunt about her ongoing feud with Remy Ma. The beef began when Minaj freestyled over a beat the "All the Way Up" rapper had used with the group Terror Squad. From that point forward, there's been bad blood between two of the queens of rap, which escalated recently with the release of Remy Ma's diss track "Shether" this February. So, how exactly did Trey Songz get thrown into this? In "Shether," (among the zillions of other disses) Ma name checks "Mr. Steal Your Girl," calling into question Nicki's cred...

Raoul Peck spent a decade securing the rights to James Baldwin’s published and unpublished writing for “I Am Not Your Negro,” his Oscar-nominated documentary about the writer. The movie opened on February 3 and became an immediate sensation, pulling in $709,5000 from 43 theaters across the country.
Peck combines archival interviews, photographs, Samuel L. Jackson’s voiceovers, and even Kendrick Lamar to present an image of black life in America across multiple decades, underscoring the assemblage with Baldwin’s own thoughts.
“I had to invent the process of working on this film,” Peck said in an interview, “which means that I had to go step by step in a way that I wouldn’t get lost in all of it.”
“I Am Not Your Negro” imagines a full life for a work that Baldwin left unfinished —a book about the legacies of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr. — examining...

Jay Z has made his first public comment on Beyonce’s “Lemonade,” and being Jay Z, there’s only one way he was going to respond — on a new track. The hip-hop mogul released a new tune called “All the Way Up,” featuring Fat Joe, Infared, Remy Ma and French Montana, on Tidal Tuesday night. Nearly a month after Beyoncé dropped her groundbreaking visual album, Lemonade, that all but confirmed Jay Z had cheated on her with "Becky with the good hair," the rapper has made a statement of his own. Jay collaborated with Fat Joe, Infared, Rema Ma, and French Montana on the "All the Way Up" remix, where he raps, "You know you made it when the fact / Your marriage made it is worth millions / Lemonade is a popular drink and it still is / Survival of the littlest." What does it all mean, Jay?! Although it might be easy to assume this is the beginning of that rumored comeback album he reportedly has in the works, the latter half of the lyric is a direct reference to a verse from the 1992 song "Dwyck" by Gang Starr ("Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is / I get more props and stunts than Bruce Willis"). On top of that,...

Up until it began its theatrical release last week, I’m not sure how many people really knew just how good Brooklyn was. It’s one thing to read reviews praising Saorise Ronan and company, but the loveliness of the work only fully reveals itself when you see it. All the way up and down the line this is just a wonderful film that really does feel like something that could potentially turn into an Oscar juggernaut. The fact that some are underestimating it has me wondering just how well it could wind up doing, which is what we’ll be discussing here today. Here we go… The movie is a romantic drama/period piece about Eilis (Ronan), an Irish girl planning to immigrate to America. Neither the disaster the fanboy nation seems to be itching to attack nor a significant improvement over the Tim Story movies, "Fantastic Four" seems doomed to please no one. If this were simply a science-fiction film about original characters, it would be a moderate pleasure that can't quite connect all the dots or pay off the various ideas it introduces. As an adaptation of the comic, it seems to miss nearly everything that seems exciting about "Fantastic Four" as a filmmaking opportunity, and it will only serve to reinforce the idea that these characters don't work in a movie. Balderdash and nonsense, though. The real problem is that 20th Century Fox has learned nothing from their own successes or failures. If you'd told me that this film was made in 1994, I would absolutely believe you. They might as well have titled the movie "Fantastic Four: Hedging Our Bet," because...

What do we really know about the music that we write? Do we write any kind of music or is there a filter? Can any kind of music be written?
Let´s start with a simple question: why did someone ever thought of writing down music in the first place? Well, very easy: because they couldn´t record it.
What now seems so natural to us, to be able to record and play music at will, is just an innovation that took place not so long ago. Before that, if music wasn´t remembered, it could be lost! Hence the need to be able to write it down.
