Thawne once again back to save "The Flash"
prometheus1987017 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had a massive hype around it. I can't say it lived up to it, but it was still pretty good.

Meena Dhawan ,being a new character on this show ,has brought some sort of fresh air. Flash is teaching her how to use her powers and run which I found nice. Its great to see Barry mentor another speedster. I always wanted to him to do this, I know in season 5 he was sort of teaching Nora but I can't really say it was mentoring.

Now meena is working on her artificial speed with Eobard Thawne(matt version) who doesn't remember that he's the reverse flash. And who is also in a relationship with meena. Barry is obviously shocked and believes Thawne is acting and thinks he escaped but runs back to lian yu to find Thawne (toms version) locked up there.

Thawne reveals to Barry about the origins of matts thawne and the speed force machine that is generating the speed force. The machine turns out to be the exact replica of what toms thawne built in the force to generate the NEGATIVE SPEED FORCE. So meena is actually using the negative speed force.. Cool twist.

Thawne also reveals that no matter which thawne in whatever timeline they always care about themselves. Now this statement is interesting because ,although the episode tells the contrary, I do believe matts RF is involved in his his own revenge endgame against Barry. This is just a small theory.

Now Barry rushes off to save meena thinking she is a danger to herself which she obviously is while using the negative speed force and accuses matts thawne of using meena. Meena gets pissed and uses the negative speed force and she becomes like the RF we know. Hungry for speed and wants to defeat the flash.

She and flash fight and thawne comes and saves the day by using love to get through to Meena (in a nutshell)and all are happy... Or is it?

Turns out evil deon is back and wants to free RF(Tom's) from his prison by giving him powers/speed to help his cause.

Now a lot of other things happened this episode. Like diggle coming back with his lantern ring box(I don't know what it is actually called) and wants thawnes help to open it. Thawne agrees only on one condition that he could see what's inside.

Diggle however on opening the box rejects it's request for his family. *Sigh* Just when I thought it could get better. Anyway thawne is upset because he thought he could find a way out of this prison if he sees through the box.

Nothing much wrong with this episode, except some dialogue kind of being on the cringe side where thawne tells Meena that he is her lightning rod. I understand where it is coming from but it's still a bit cringe.

Cecil gets a new power up, but it barely makes sense and it's wierd. The actor's acting has become insanely cringe and bad. I really wish the character exits the show or at least becomes a recurring character rather than a regular one. Same problem with Allegra.

And one more problem is with some flashbacks. We DO NOT need to see things that happened literally few minutes back.

This episode does well to show the "human" side of thawne that he is capable of love. Matt's acting was great. Tom's as well. I'm interested to see what happens next. I still think Matt's RF has a bigger agenda because I know that whatever Tom's RF said about all the Eobard Thawnes being selfish in all timelines is true. 2 more episodes remaining and I hope the writers don't screw it up.

Overall: 8/10.

Holy crap! Guys! I liked a Flash episode!
demigodshmurda16 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I know, right? I didn't think it was possible either, but here we are! I mean, yeah, it wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it was entertaining and definitely played with your belief a little bit.

I didn't get bingo this week so my record is currently 2 and 16, with the possibility of that going up to 3 if Deon actually is the season's main villain like this episode implies.

I'm going to do my complaints first and my compliments second, or possibly have some compliments mixed in with the complaints if I can't avoid talking about them together. So no, this is not me hating on the episode despite me giving it a high star rating.

I'm gonna get into the stuff we all actually care about in a second, but I have to get my customary hatred of Cecile and/or Allegra out of the way. Yes, it's in all of my reviews for this show. I recognize the pattern. I literally said at the top of the episode "Oh, I'm gonna black out my Cecile square this episode, aren't I?", referring to the Cecile space on my bingo card which I did black out once already during "The Curious Case of Bartholomew Allen". But get this. Cecile is in the opening scene of the episode, and then screws off until the last scene before the end. I know! I'm just as shocked as you! Having an episode where Cecile and Allegra don't play a big role makes the episode better?? I never would've thought of that! In all seriousness though, I have no idea why this character is still around, and I'll be more than a little upset if she sticks around after Joe leaves at the end of the season since, you know, the characters have a kid together. But at least in this episode her role was inoffensive.

For starters, Speed Force Lightning may have electrical properties, but it is not interchangeable with lightning. At least, not until this episode that is. Because apparently the Negative Speed Force can absorb electricity in order to keep its hold over Meena Dhawan. Also, apparently harnessing lightning from the upper atmosphere can allow someone to become a speedster. Now obviously that second thing isn't actually the case since we know that the Negative Speed Force is really the cause behind Meena's speed, but the characters in the show think that's the case. So come on, say it with me guys! That's not how the Speed Force works! Feels good to break that one back out!

Then again though, that's how the Speed Force has been working all season long. First, Black Lightning's lightning can cut off Barry's connection to the Speed Force. Now absorbing electricity can increase the amount of Speed Force/Negative Speed Force in a speedster's system. I know I haven't made this clear, but Barry getting struck by lightning wasn't what made him a speedster. What made him a speedster was the Particle Accelerator Explosion, which gave him the power to harness energy from the Speed Force. The lightning was never really the important thing until this season, so yeah, that's a retcon. I wonder what would happen if you put Barry in the same room as a lightning rod? Can he just not use his powers? I'm very curious.

Oh crap! Wait! The lightning might actually be important after all! In the season 1 episode "Power Outage" the metahuman Blackout used electricity to cut off Barry's connection to the Speed Force! I completely forgot about that! So maybe this isn't so much of a retcon as it is a completely random episode of the week bit from season 1 that we figured we'd never see again and discarded in our memories coming back around and suddenly being important again in season 8. Either Eric Wallace is a mad genius, or this was a complete accident! ... It's the second one, isn't it?

Next, Eobard Thawne. I personally prefer Tom Cavanagh's take on the character to that of Matt Letscher, but seeing him in the preview for this episode last week got me more than a little excited! That being said, this episode would've been a lot cooler if that wasn't spoiled for us in the preview! Like, imagine if Marvel had spoiled Jake Lockley showing up in the Moon Knight trailer. Kinda takes the edge out of that final scene in the Moon Knight finale, doesn't it? Or imagine if Ezra Miller's Flash had shown up in a teaser for Crisis on Infinite Earths. That moment wouldn't have had nearly the same reaction from fans as it did when we got to see it live. That's really the point I'm trying to make here. The advertising of these last two episodes haven't kept anything from the audience. And the result is that those moments don't land as hard when you watch the episode, because now you know they're coming. Imagine getting something different in the teaser (though I'm not sure what considering that this episode was pretty centralized on the Thawne's, so this specific episode is a bad example) and then five minutes into this episode, BOOM, Matt Letscher Thawne! That would've been crazy! And I know this seems like a weird tangent, but it is a legitimate criticism. This kind of stuff is the same reason why everyone hates spoilers!

And on the topic of Thawne, while I do like this use of the character, I can't help but wish the writers had nixed the SIX FILLER EPISODES they did this season and gave us a story with Thawne and Meena in the place of all that. I actually really like Thawne's story with Meena here about how he fell in love with her, and how he's willing to die before losing her, and how Meena was so health conscious that she'd never let Thawne eat a cheeseburger. That was honestly really cute! But did anybody else feel like his speech to Barry felt a little hollow? It felt like he was telling all this to Barry not because it actually happened, but because the audience needs to know these characters. This is a textbook example of an exposition dump. Just imagine if we'd gotten to see this happening in the background for the last four episodes with this being the payoff to that major storyline. I hate comparing this season to season 6, but I'm going to say it again, the reason that Bloodwork was so great wasn't because of the number of episodes he was in, but because we got to see him develop from being a normal guy into a villain.

Also, why can't both Meena *and* Thawne use the BLOCK? The show just says they can't but doesn't give an explanation as to why, so that's dumb.

*Also* also, Meena's Negative Speed Force can drain Barry's speed. Why didn't Thawne ever try to do that before? Man's had more experience as a speedster than anybody else on this show, so it's not like he couldn't figure it out, and that's the kind of petty stuff he lives for!

But hey, glass half full. It seems like this new version of Thawne might actually be a good guy, or might be a resurrected version of him post Legends season 7. Yeah, you read that right. The Arrowverse actually referenced Legends of Tomorrow! In fact, they've been doing it a lot this season so far. They used a Damien Darhk post Legends season 5 character development during Armageddon, they got Donald Faison pictured as Booster Gold in the Flash museum in "Impulsive Excessive Disorder", now this. I'm not complaining, I'm just surprised. Legends is often thought of as the black sheep of the Arrowverse, so it's great to see the representation here!

And finally, writers, or I guess not the writers but whoever edits these episodes, STOP PUTTING IN FLASHBACKS OF SCENES WE JUST SAW TEN MINUTES AGO!!! WE'RE NOT STUPID AND WE CAN CONNECTS THE DOTS EASIER THAN YOU THINK WE CAN!!! *takes a deep breath* Please and thanks!

But yeah, I'm not actually mad about this new Thawne. In fact, Matt Letscher's performance alone is what sells some of the more emotional scenes this episode because the dude is just a good actor! In terms of Thawne as a villain I still prefer Tom Cavanagh, but Letscher doesn't slack off this episode by any means! I'm not fully convinced that he's a good guy since, as Barry says in this episode, every Thawne is evil no matter what face he's wearing, but he's definitely holding my attention.

I also really like how Thawne and Meena are treated like Barry and Iris, with Thawne being Meena's "lightning rod". God, that line is so cringey, but the intention behind it is actually pretty solid. If Meena and Thawne do end up going bad (which I'm betting on), that means that maybe we could finally have a pair of villains that have a similar dynamic to Barry and Iris. I think they tried to do that with DeVoe and his wife in season 4, but that was a bust, so it's a cool idea to throw around. I still think this is something that should've been expanded upon more throughout the season in the place of half of those filler episodes we got, but I appreciate the attempt.

And I also like Diggle's role in the episode. Sure, it's weird that he knows how to personally attack Thawne when he's never had a real rivalry with the guy, but it's all in service of this plot of him going from place to place trying to decide whether or not he should answer the call from the Guardians and become John Stewart (speculation of course since there's no way the WB would let the CW even think about touching the Green Lantern after Batwoman). And ultimately, he makes the decision that makes the most sense for him. If we take the interpretation of Crisis that Oliver Queen manually picked all the changes to Earth Prime that Arrow's finale "Fadeout" presents, Oliver put Diggle's family back together. He wanted Diggle to live the life of a father and spend some time out of the spotlight. Do I want him to become Green Lantern? Absolutely! Does this make sense for his character? Also yeah.

All in all this was, dare I say the first good episode since "The Fire Next Time". Surprisingly, I'll be looking forward to this two-part finale, which is something I definitely couldn't say after last week's crime against television! If we just stick to the rules of the show and focus on the characters that work, this season could still go out with a bang! The ball's in your court, writers. Don't blow it!

7 / 10.

One of the best episodes so far this season.
adeleinecastillo16 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I really liked how they managed to work around the writing inconsistencies in this episode. Loved the cameos, season throwbacks, hints and comic influences. They also managed to make Thawne more appealing to the viewer while also maintaining the comic integrity. I am expecting much more in the next episode. Hope to see more of Matt Letscher.

The only thing that bothered me this episode was Cecile. I think she should loose relevancy in the series. Really hated how they keep trying to make her more OP and more teenish like personality when in the first seasons she was a serious character. That really bothers me. (Also what is happening with Diggle? Is he going to get the ring in Superman & Louise? Is his opportunity gone forever)

But overall I haven't watched a good flash episode like the one tonight.

I felt the speedforce in my body watching this episode
dominiksteficar16 June 2022
I haven't been so hyped since season 2, the series felt so empty and boring from time to time, but this felt like returning to the roots, to vibes of season 1. This whole season was incredibly great, but this episode made me lose my mind way too many times. Thank you directors for making me enjoy the flash one more time like in the first season!

Easily the best episode this season
b_yocum17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Omg, where do I even begin with this review. This episode just had so much going on, with numerous cameos, and pretty awesome ones at that. This episode had the return of Matt Letscher as Eobard Thawne, only... he doesn't remember he's the Reverse Flash. A very interesting twist I must say. Next we have the actual story for the episode, and it definitely didn't disappoint! Any time the Reverse Flash/Eobard is involved the story becomes interesting to me every time. Aside from the story this episode, this fight had an awesome fight sequence, one of many this season! Overall this episode surpassed anything I expected and am really looking forward to next week!

10/10 for me.

Either family or selfish and probably evil
keithhaugen16 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Thanks, Flash, for letting Diggle remind all of us that choose not to have a spouse and children that we are apparently selfish and evil. That it is "no choice at all". Go to hell and take your sanctimonious bull crap with you.

Best Episode Since 7x02
alirezamatrian16 June 2022
First of all, I should say that we can consider this episode as when the show entered the territory of underrated works.

Some moments of the ongoing season were intentionally a call-back as homage to the first season and in line with this choice, they used actors from that installment to capture the same essence of the more popular and critically acclaimed earlier season. But in this episode, while borrowing an old title of one of their best episodes ever, they levelled up their game to a new level. The Flash has lost its viewers since its fourth season, but those viewers are going to miss this underrated episode. The improvement in comparison to the last season is obvious, but it's not really 10/10, so I'm just showing my support as a fan with this rate here, if it makes sense.

Kudos to the cast and crew, great job.

Good but not great!!

Warning: Spoilers
Tbh i expected a better story for thawn. John not becoming Green lantern is a disappointment for me too, i kinda wanted Thawn to have a masterplan which he would reveal after gaining Barry's trust, the whole Thawn-Meena love story was a bit boring and I really didn't wanted the final fight to end with the same pep talk! It's very repetative now! Just make some bold moves man, I really love The Flash and i can't hate it even if I want to, so please make it better just like S1, S2 and S3!!

Overall the episode was enjoyable but i expected more cuz they were bringing Thawn back! :(

Very action packed and fun scenes and plot!!!! Love this episode and how they elicited many things!! I liked that Mina was sort of the villain for this episode even tho!! And I liked the Matts eobard interactions with Barry!!

Liked the green lantern scene with diggle after waiting that long!! Really good episode with at the end Thawne and deon meet and deons going to give his speed back is a remarkable idea and I'm so excited for what's going to happen!!!!

I don't know what to think
jeremytongpao-6721216 June 2022
I really liked this episode but it kind of let me down too. I love the Reverse Flash, and Tom Cavanagh was written very well in this episode which was a nice surprise, however Matt Letscher was not. I really hope we get to see his origin story in the last two episodes. John's story was a little disappointing too, I was excited to see him as Green Lantern but now he's just thrown it all away. It was written nicely, but they basically just hyped us up for nothing if they don't bring it back somehow. Really hoping they do these characters justice in the finale.

Went from hyped to disappointed to frustrated
lunafanaticx16 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I never liked the actress for the new speedster, she is really bad at acting; all emotions feel fake. But that was something I could ignore since this show doesn't really have good acting in the first place.

When Eobard Thawne was brought back, I was really hyped. I thought a good storyline was coming. But this all went to crap.

My frustration really started when Barry left the prison and John was just waiting there and randomly appeared, and went to Thawne for a solution to the cube he found. This all doesn't make sense and it's all just lazy writing, especially the conclusion that John doesn't become Green Lantern but instead chooses to go back to his family makes it all extra lazy.

I would've liked it if Thawne indeed had a plan and was faking it all, but no, he even had romance for the new speedster which sounded like really lazy writing. Thawne was turned into a good guy, even in the ending when it was revealed that he sacrificed himself for the good.

If this new speedster is going to be the new enemy for the last few episodes of the season, then I am really disappointed.

Wow!!

Warning: Spoilers
Wow this was a doozy of an episode I was entertained and interested through the whole episode!!!! It was insanely good!! Starting off quick with a few actions scenes!! As well as the worry Barry felt while encountering OG Thawne it insane!! As well as the plot we've been waiting on for years of Diggle and the green lantern situation, that had some cool scene with that!! As well as the negative speed force taking over Mina was really good!! Then at the end the cliff hanger of Deon meeting (Wells Thawne) and telling him "it's time to fulfill your destiny" gets me really excited for what is to come for the season finale!! Overall really good episode!!!!

Like it was season 1 and 2. Great performance by Matt Letscher. It was awesome to see him back. This one was very exciting to watch. Not sure what's going on with Digs but it was a decent scene. Overall it got me hyped like back in the day.

Again
pauli_gomez20 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The episode in general was ok but I am tired of Flash repeating things. The bad guys forgetting who they were (and probably becoming bad again some day. I do not know if this Thawne will be back to his bad behaviour in the next episodes.

Besides, we do not need another speedster and another Thawne in the team.

And in the end, the Thawne/Wells is going to be free again and it makes me roll my eyes. I love Tom Cavanagh, but this is too much.

And all the Diggle part was a serious let down. At least, it gave us some closure, but it was disappointing.

Did totally not meet my expectations
Lightning_Lion17 June 2022
This episode felt like a failed rescue attempt for the time-travel consistency in this series. I hope that the writers will come back to the original timeline and makes sure it loops back around like it's supposed to, otherwise it makes no sense that this version of Barry Allen can still exist.

I am really curious how the allegedly coming 9th season will play out and if it will bring back logic and consistency.
