Those who know who Roland Emmerich is will probably know that the director is known for his epic films, a lot of which are also major disaster films. Some of these major titles include Universal Soldier (1992), Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence (2016), Godzilla (1998), The Patriot (2000), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), 10,000 BC (2008), 2012 (2009), White House Down (2013), Midway (2019), and Moonfall (2022). But, Emmerich is now shifting to television, as his new project is about to be released on Peacock this summer. Ahead of the premiere, a teaser trailer has been released.
The project in question is the epic sword-and-sandal series Those About to Die, which is set in Ancient Rome. The series will be based on the book of the same name by writer and journalist Daniel P. Mannix; interesting enough, the same book served as the basis for Ridley Scott’s epic classic, Gladiator.

Neon has done a great job of promoting the upcoming horror film Longlegs while also keeping the story’s secrets concealed. Although multiple teaser trailers and posters have made their way online, we still don’t know a whole lot about this movie, beyond the fact that it’s scheduled to reach theatres on July 12th. But if you want to know exactly how much we do know about it, just keep scrolling down, because we have compiled a list of Everything We Know About Longlegs.

Longlegs, which is said to be “in the vein of classic Hollywood psychological thrillers”, is the latest genre project from director Osgood Perkins – who, yes, is the son of actor Anthony Perkins, best remembered for his performance as Norman Bates in the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. Just as movie theaters seemed to finally recover from the pandemic — and the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon augured a new age of bold studio filmmaking — here comes 2024 to (potentially) spoil the party.
It’s not just that studios pushed many potential blockbusters into 2025 amid Hollywood’s labor strikes. It’s that hardly any of the movies still on the calendar appear to have wind at their backs.
Here’s just a sampling of how 2024 could unfold at the box office.
Sure Thing
“Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.)
Release date: March 1
Thrill factor: In the time since “Dune: Part One” grossed $402 million globally (which is not nothing; the sci-fi epic debuted simultaneously on HBO Max), Timothée Chalamet only cemented his star power with “Wonka.” And Zendaya actually gets some screen time in the sequel.
Chill factor: The box office has been completely unpredictable post-pandemic. Who would have guessed that “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” would...

Chinese studio Bona Film Group has struck a deal with U.S. financier Tsg Entertainment Finance to invest in a slate of upcoming Hollywood franchise movies. The deal is understood to include upcoming “Avatar” and “Deadpool” titles.
The agreement, signed on Dec. 31, is described as an extension and expansion of a relationship between Bona and Tsg that began in 2015. The financial terms were not disclosed.
Through the earlier deal Bona committed to providing $235 million to co-invest with Tsg in a slate of films including “The Martian,” “Independence Day: Resurgence,” “The Greatest Showman,” “War for the Planet of the Apes,” “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Alien: Covenant” and “X-Men: Apocalypse,” most of which were distributed through 20th Century Fox.

As the CIA characters overseeing the office monitors might say, “My god, it’s Jason Bourne!” TheWrap has learned that Universal has begun early development for what would be a sixth movie in the so-called Jason Bourne universe. Edward Berger, whose Netflix-distributed re-adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations and won four, is in talks to possibly helm the next chapter.
There is no screenplay, nor has Matt Damon officially been approached, but the actor who starred in four of the five previous installments certainly has first right of refusal. Damon starred in “The Bourne Identity” in 2002, launching the ongoing spy franchise and reprising in three sequels. Jeremy Renner took over in “The Bourne Legacy,” a spin-off chapter released in 2012.
The Doug Liman-directed smash earned rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth in the summer of 2002, grossing $214 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It also...

Vivica A. Fox says the 'Independence Day' sequel was disappointing because Will Smith wasn't in it.The 58-year-old actress starred opposite Smith as his onscreen love interest in the 1996 alien blockbuster and she reprised her role in the 2016 follow-up 'Independence Day: Resurgence' but her former co-star was absent from the cast - and Vivica is convinced failing to bring him back was a huge mistake. She told The A.V. Vivica A. Fox is getting real about the Independence Day sequel she starred in and expressing how she really felt about the film.
Fox played Jasmine Hiller, wife of Will Smith’s character Captain Steven Hiller, in the 1996 film directed by Roland Emmerich. The star went on to reprise her role in Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016, but this time without Smith by her side, which she felt was a factor in the movie not living up to the box office results of the original.

Unflinchingly candid as ever, Vivica A. Fox recently made her views clear about why the 2016 sequel to the iconic “Independence Day” fell short of the first: it lacked the irresistible charisma of Will Smith. While discussing her true-crime series “The Interrogation Room” with A.V. Club, Fox dived into the perceived failings of “Independence Day: Resurgence.”

In true Vivica A. Fox fashion, she’s keeping it real when it comes to why she believes 2016’s “Independence Day: Resurgence” wasn’t the success it could’ve been: It needed Will Smith.
“I just didn’t feel like it was good and lived up to the first one,” Fox told A.V. Club while promoting her true-crime series “The Interrogation Room.” “I really feel we missed out… by not bringing Will Smith back.”
Will Smith was in talks to return for “Independence Day: Resurgence” (and a third film that was planned at the time) but negotiations fell apart over Smith’s salary.
With Roland Emmerich directing and cowriting the script with Dean Devlin, the sequel took place 20 years after the first. In that time, Smith’s character, Steven Hiller, had died and returning and new characters now had to protect Earth from a new threat.

Nothing's a surefire bet in Hollywood until it is. Few took "Star Wars" seriously until it forever changed the movie landscape in 1977, ushering in our modern blockbuster era. Many were just as skeptical of the very concept of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, right up until "The Avengers" became the highest-grossing non-James Cameron movie ever at the time of its release in 2012. But when it did, you can bet your bottom dollar studios did everything in their power to replicate that success as quickly as possible -- and you can be just as well-assured that the outcome was often more regrettable than not.

To quote the evil Noah Cross in Chinatown, “Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough.” The same can be said of Adam Sandler, who spent years as a piñata for critics as a result of such mindless comedies as Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. Now he’s an acclaimed actor, his name floated by Oscar prognosticators for such superb performances as the ones he gave in Uncut Gems and Hustle. He’s even joined the ranks of such illustrious comedic talents as Richard Pryor and George Carlin in winning the Mark Twain Prize.
But Sandler’s ultimately gotta be Sandler, and that huge deal with Netflix has to be fulfilled. Hence the arrival of Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to the critically panned 2019 comedy co-starring Jennifer Aniston that became the streamer’s biggest hit that year. Mumbai, March 25 (Ians) Music composer duo Avinash-Vishwajeet have composed a fresh Punjabi dance number to showcase a great Indian wedding for ‘Murder Mystery 2’ starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.
The song ‘King Di Wedding Hai’, has been crooned by Farhad Bhiwandiwala. The composer duo will be attending the March 30 preview in Paris.
Talking about the project, Avinash said, “We have been working on Indian music across languages for over 25 years including songs with Tina Turner. But this was an amazing experience. Getting Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston to dance to our music was an experience of a lifetime. We enjoyed every moment.”
Recollecting how the song pitch turned out for the film, Vishwajeet said, “We made the song and they told her it has a Disney-like feel. We felt nice. Upon further conversation, we realised they mean goody goody and lovey dovey by Disney-feel, and they wanted quite the opposite.

McKenna Grace has revealed that she underwent spinal surgery last month.
In a social media post that featured a video of her in the hospital post-surgery, the 16-year-old actor wrote: “Occasionally, life imitates art and the night my episode of Handmaid’s Tale where I was in a hospital bed came out, I was actually in a real hospital bed.”

“Social media only reflects what we want people to know often we don’t see the ugly, hard, less-flattering sides of a person and their life,” she wrote in an Instagram post.
“For me, it’s been easier to hide my struggles and insecurities and maybe write about them in songs, but that didn’t fix them.”

There's a new Witcher in town ... or at least, there will be when "The Witcher" season 4 eventually gets here. Netflix has announced today that the epic fantasy series has been renewed for a fourth season, but that pales in comparison to the news that Geralt of Rivia is being recast. Henry Cavill played the silver-haired monster-slayer in the previous two seasons and the upcoming third season of "The Witcher," but "The Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role for "The Witcher" season 4.
Cavill himself announced the news on his Instagram page with the following statement:
My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters,...

The producers behind 2022's horror hit "Smile" are wasting no time in lining up their next project. And this one has a creepy clown in it! Plus, it is coming from the same director who gave us "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil." The project in question? An adaptation of author Adam Cesare's novel "Clown in a Cornfield." It's early stages, but the pieces on the board are promising.
According to Deadline, Eli Craig has been tapped to direct the film, which is a joint venture between Protagonist and Temple Hill. Carter Blanchard, an uncredited writer on "Independence Day: Resurgence," has been tapped to pen the screenplay. "We love Eli Craig's brand of scary fun and are thrilled to be working with him on this terrifying slasher adaptation that is both timely and timeless," said Temple Hill producers in a statement. In Leni Lauritsch’s gritty sci-fi thriller “Rubikon,” the final frontier could well be humankind’s last refuge.
The film, which stars Julia Franz Richter, Georg Blagden (“Versailles”) and Mark Ivanir, screens in the Zurich Film Festival’s Focus Competition.
Set in a dark future in which a polluted and barely sustainable Earth is plagued by corporate armies battling for depleting resources as the wealthy live in air domes that protect them from the contaminated atmosphere, the story centers on three astronauts aboard the space station Rubikon, where scientists have developed a possible means of survival, a sustainable algae project to provide oxygen and food.
When a mysterious and highly toxic fog begins to envelop the planet, the crew has to decide whether to risk their lives and return to Earth in an effort to rescue survivors or remain safe aboard the self-sufficient station.

The upcoming Walking Dead spin-off Tales of the Walking Dead is an anthology series, which means that each of the first season’s six episodes will center on different characters that may or may not make appearances in other episodes throughout the season. Because each episode is primarily a self-contained story, actors who may not have the time to commit to a full season arc are able to join this universe. This means that Tales of the Walking Dead has a stacked cast with many familiar faces – some are newcomers to the franchise and others are Walking Dead alums.

The first volume of season 4 had an epic quality, with supersized episodes that effectively transitioned from one character thread to the next (not an easy feat to pull off). There's nothing in the world more American than baseball, apple pie, and Bill Pullman's speech in "Independence Day." When the film debuted in theaters all the way back in 1996, it became a pinnacle of the 1990s blockbuster film and helped skyrocket Will Smith into Hollywood stardom. It's a movie about the impending end of the world, with aliens ready to zap destructive beams directly into the White House, the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the Twin Towers and other landmarks frequently slapped on tourism postcards. The aliens are powerful, all of humanity is in danger, and it's up...

Moonfall director Roland Emmerich thinks Superhero and Star Wars films are ruining the industry. He is among the many actors and directors that have lambasted the state of the movie business because these types of movies exist.
He sat down with Den of Geek and while talking about his newest disaster film, he mentions, “Because naturally, Marvel and DC Comics and Star Wars have pretty much taken over,” he said. “It’s ruining our industry a little bit, because nobody does anything original anymore.”
Emmerich claims to be all about originality and believes that Christopher Nolan is making bold choices when it comes to filmmaking.
“You should make bold new movies, you know? And I think, actually, Christopher Nolan is the master of that. He is someone who can make movies about whatever he wants,” he said. “I have it a little bit harder, but I still have a big...

Criticism of Marvel movies is nothing new, with a different filmmaker complaining about Hollywood’s increased reliance on franchises seemingly every day. But those criticisms usually come from the arthouse side of Hollywood, with filmmakers complaining that the prevalence of blockbusters makes it harder to fund small films. But it appears that even the biggest blockbuster filmmakers have their grievances with Hollywood’s main franchises. Disaster filmmaker Roland Emmerich has once again joined the chorus of voices saying that Hollywood makes too many Marvel and “Star Wars” movies, and the trend makes him fear for the future of original features.
Speaking to Den of Geek to promote his latest film “Moonfall,” Emmerich lamented the current state of blockbuster filmmaking. “Because naturally, Marvel and DC Comics and Star Wars have pretty much taken over,” he said. “It’s ruining our industry a little bit, because nobody does anything original anymore.”

After a sleepy January mostly dominated by Spider-Man: No Way Home taking victory laps after its explosive December opening, February looks to be considerably more eventful. The star-powered slate includes a franchise follow-up (Death on the Nile) and a potential franchise starter (Uncharted) mixed in with a musical rom-com (Marry Me) and a comedy (Dog) to round things out, not to mention a potential boost to the specialty market once the Oscar nominations come out. The month should get off to a solid start this weekend with the latest Roland Emmerich disaster epic Moonfall and the return of the Jackass gang in Jackass Forever.
It may be a close match, but the weekend will likely go to Jackass Forever. Paramount is releasing the film on 3,600 screens and is expecting a gross in the mid-teens for the series’ fourth film (fifth when you count the associated Bad Grandpa). That would make...

The somewhat frazzled plot of “Independence Day: Resurgence,” 2016’s big budget sequel to 1996’s seminal summer classic, was a consequence of hastily rewriting the script when Will Smith abruptly dropped out of the film, director Roland Emmerich recently revealed to TheWrap.
There are undoubtedly some impressive set pieces (including a sequence that features a kaiju-sized version of the classic “Independence Day” alien) in the film and Jeff Goldblum, taking center stage, unleashes all his Goldblumian eccentricities to great effect. But there was definitely something missing. And Emmerich agrees.
While speaking to the filmmaker about his new movie “Moonfall” (out everywhere tomorrow), Emmerich talked about the problems he faced while putting “Independence Day: Resurgence” together and how he soldiered on more out of financial obligation than creative exploration.
According to Emmerich, they found themselves in quite a jam when Will Smith, who really entered the movie star realm with the first film,...

Every line is stupid. Every reveal is stupid. Every inference that conspiracy theorists could save us all if only people would listen to what they have to say is stupid — not stupid as opposed to being serious, but stupid in lieu of being smart. That slight yet pivotal distinction epitomizes the sheer joylessness of Emmerich’s latest mega-slog, which betrays the dumb fun promised by its marketing campaign in favor of a po-faced interplanetary pileup that unfolds less like a B-movie spectacle with a NASA-worthy budget than it does a blockbuster remake of “Melancholia” as directed by Elon Musk. The result is a blockbuster as big and hollow as the Moon itself; one small step for bland, one giant leap for bland-kind.
Of course, critics have long accused Emmerich of lowering the bar with his destructive brand of blockbuster schlock, and if the world keeps getting worse at its current rate,...
