The Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment is pushing into the unscripted game.
The firm has hired ex-Catalina Content exec Brent Jacoby to head up the new division, which will tap into pre-existing Skybound IP such as AMC smash The Walking Dead and Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.
Jacoby will be focused on quickly expanding the global unscripted TV slate, although Skybound didn’t delve any deeper into his strategy. He joins at the same time as former MGM TV VP Chris Goble, who takes up the newly-created SVP of Television role. Both will report to TV President Glenn Geller.
Jacoby joins from Sky Studios-backed Catalina where he developed the likes of The Mighty Underdogs for Discovery+. Prior to that, he led the development team for ITV America’s Outpost Entertainment, working for the likes of Discovery, A&e, Food Network and Science Channel including History’s Knife or Death.

The 5th edition of Podes, the Portuguese podcast festival, took place on 18 November in Lisbon, Portugal. The event was focused on podcasters and podcasting, marking a shift from previous editions where the biggest sessions were podcast liveshows. As such, Podes offered capacity-building workshops and panel debates on growth, technology and the state of Portuguese podcasting in 2023, and invited all podcasters to attend a podcasting town hall meeting to openly discuss the state of affairs, what can be done in the future and what role should a podcasting festival have in a growing industry.
The festival ended with a live ceremony that celebrated Portuguese podcasts and the people who make them.
The awards process started in September, when a free registration was open for all podcasts. At the same time, open submission was available for the People’s choice award, which ran until 31 October. After registration was closed, shortlists were created for each category,...

As U.S. and European sales agents and distributors gather in Buenos Aires next week for Ventana Sur, there will be a very large elephant in the room: the stunning victory in Argentina’s presidential election Sunday of far right Javier Milei, a self-described “anarcho-capitalist.”
Milei won 55.8% of the vote promising to do away with inflation, running at over 140%, as part of “drastic changes” which have included scrapping Argentina’s central bank, dollarizing the economy and slashing public spending by 15% of Gdp.
On the campaign trail, he also promised to abolish Argentina’s Ministry of Culture and national film-tv agency Incaa.
Currently, Argentina also holds the presidency of Ibermedia, the pan-regional fund for Latin America, Spain and Portugal, whose moneys are vital for art-house co-productions.
Incaa also co-organizes Ventana Sur itself with Cannes Film Festival and Market.
A left-leaning Argentine film-tv industry, whether Peronist or not, will take time to digest Milei’s victory.

Living legend Hayao Miyazaki’s animated fantasy epic “The Boy and the Heron,” the latest from Japan’s legendary Studio Ghibli, will open the 71st San Sebastian Festival, screening on Sept. 22.
Bowing San Sebastian, Miyazaki’s film, which he has declared to be his last, will score an extraordinary double of opening both the Toronto and San Sebastian festivals in the space of a couple of weeks.
The San Sebastian screening will mark the film’s European premiere. The Toronto-San Sebastian double is a mark of the huge regard in which Miyazaki is held and an upgrade in the importance of animation at San Sebastian.
This is the fourth time that a film by the Japanese moviemaker will screen at the San Sebastian Festival, but it is the first time he will participate in its Official Selection, the festival noted on Thursday.

Prince Harry, understandably, missed his wife Meghan Markle during his recent trip to Singapore.
Harry took part in a charity polo match for Sentebale over the weekend, with him playing as part of the Royal Salute Sentebale Team; captained by charity ambassador Nacho Figueras.
Harry’s friend Figueras — who is married to Delfina Blaquier — told Hello!, “We miss our wives very much.
“This was a very short trip, although it’s a few days, it’s a lot of travelling for 24 hours in Japan and a few hours here, but we miss them we wish they were here.”

The Disney animated movie Encanto is already on its way to becoming a classic. With songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film’s focus on a Latin-American family was also monumental for representation in family films. Encanto won Best Animated Film at the Oscars and has replaced Ice Age as John Leguizamo’s calling card with kids, since he voiced Bruno in Encanto.
Mirabel and Bruno | Disney
Leguizamo spoke with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about his role in Violent Night, available on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD now. We also asked about Encanto and how young fans respond to it knowing he is the voice of Bruno. Encanto is now streaming on Disney+.
1 ‘Encanto’ is bigger than 5 ‘Ice Age’s with kids
As a comedian, Leguizamo does a lot of different voices. That’s been a boon to him in animation. He’s also voiced characters in Elena of Avalor, Bojack Horseman, Underdogs and more.

On Feb. 7, 2013, after delays and significant drama behind the scenes, Community debuted “History 101,” the first episode of the long-awaited fourth season, and the first under new showrunners David Guarascio and Moses Port. Fan reaction to the outing was mixed, to put it mildly, while critics were downright savage. Soon enough, cast and crew began to express their misgivings, too. The entire season was later written off in-universe as the result of a gas leak, never to be spoken of again.
Was that a fair assessment, though? Countless other “bad” installments of pop culture have been revisited over the years, only for perceived faults to be found not quite so damning as audiences initially thought. With an entire decade of hindsight and objectivity to reflect upon, was the fourth season of Community really that bad?
Kind of, yeah!

Munich-based production and distribution house Beta Film has created a Spanish scripted division, with former Atresmedia exec Mercedes Gamero and Warner Bros. Pictures International España’s Pablo Nogueroles tapped to lead it.

Gamero worked in acquisitions at Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia for 18 years, and worked as a producer on Academy Award-nominee Klaus and Goya Award Best Picture winners Futbolin and Marshland.

"She hits that ball harder than her momma does." Pull Shot Productions in association with Cascia Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie documentary titled Foosballers, produced, edited and directed by Joe Heslinga. As the title indicates, this film is indeed about the people who compete in the table soccer game known best as foosball. Enter the underground world of professional foosball, a sport that's been around for over 40 years but no one knows exists." The doc follows six of the best table soccer players in the world as they prepare for the sport's most prestigious event, The Tornado World Championships. The Directors Guild of America announced only a handful of nominations on the TV front on January 6, after a glitch in voting. Jill Soloway, who won in 2015 for helming “Transparent,” was left off the ballot for the series finale. So the guild is letting its members recast their votes in that category. The DGA will reveal the results of that on Friday, along with the nominees for drama series and specials. (The feature film nominations are still a go for Tuesday.)
Among Monday’s nominations, “Fosse/Verdon” led the way with three bids in the TV Movie or Limited Series race: Emmy nominees Thomas Kail and Jessica Yu are joined by Minki Spiro. Emmy champ Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), Emmy nominee Ava DuVernay (“When They See Us”) and Vince Gilligan (“El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie”) round out the race.

Cannes — Could “The Secret of Their Eyes’” Juan José Campanella have another break-out hit on his hands?
Produced by the Argentine Academy Award winner and Gastón Gorali at their Buenos Aires-based MundoLoco Animation Studios and Fundación Ian, and directed by Abel Goldfarb, “Ian” world premiered in Cannes Monday at a special market presentation.
An animated short, it embodies the large creativity of current animation in Latin America, using what Goldfarb, as supervising editor on “Underdogs,” describes as a “mixed” technique of stop-motion techniques for its background, and CGI for characters and the objects they touch. Normally, the mix would be the other way around, he added.
Set in a fenced-off playground, “Ian’s” objects use recycled materials: a lamp light filament is made from an old guitar string; a swing is fixed in the ground by two screws.

Charles Manson is dead, and everyone who’s never carved a swastika into their forehead is relieved. Bryan Cranston would appear to be among them, despite his initial reaction to the news — the former Walter White says he “shuddered” when he heard of the cult leader’s death, as it reminded him of an encounter he had with Manson not long before the Tate-labianca murders.

“Hearing Charles Manson is dead, I shuddered,” Cranston tweeted. “I was within his grasp just one year before he committed brutal murder in 1969. Luck was with me when a cousin and I went horseback riding at the Span [sic] Ranch, and saw the little man with crazy eyes whom the other hippies called Charlie.” The actor didn’t elaborate on his story, but the Spahn Ranch is where the Manson Family...

With this weekend’s launch in Hollywood of the Animation Is Film Festival at the Tcl Chinese 6 Theater, there’s an opportunity to expand industry tastes while influencing the Oscar race. “It’s for film people to find a highly curated selection of the best feature filmmaking from around the world [for that particular year] in one place,” said Aif founder Eric Beckman, the co-founder and president of GKids, which organized the festival in collaboration with the Annecy International Animation Festival, Variety, and Acifa-Hollywood.
After 20 years of success with the New York International Children’s Film Festival, Beckman thought it was time to broaden the appeal in Hollywood with an emphasis on global production and distribution.

Way back in 2008, Fox Searchlight jumped into Oscar action with Toronto pickup “The Wrestler;” it yielded two 2009 Oscar acting nominations for Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei. Similarly, having lost “Birth of a Nation” as a viable candidate, Searchlight picked up “Jackie” at Tiff 2016 and landed three nominations including Natalie Portman for Best Actress. Last-minute Oscar-hopeful buys are relatively rare; awards campaigns aren’t meant to be rush jobs. However, it sometimes pays to be opportunistic and the 2018 race looks like one of those years.

After last year’s three-Oscar haul for “Moonlight,” including Best Picture, A24 wants to prove that was no anomaly. Here’s what the rising young distributor will push this awards season. (Remember: A year ago, “Moonlight” wasn’t viewed as a likely Best Picture contender — much less the big winner.)
Co-founded by David Fenkel, John Hodges, and Daniel Katz, A24 is known for edgy arthouse pleasers that eschew conventional storytelling. “Moonlight” was the company’s first original production; its other box office players include Oscar-winners “Ex Machina,” “Room,” and “Amy,” and smart horror flick “The Witch.” But none have passed the $27 million box office earned by “Moonlight.”

As the recent Academy Award nominations for Brazilian masterpiece "Boy and the World" and Chilean CG short "Bear Story" have proven, Latin American animation is booming and beginning to earn attention internationally. With prolific studios like Anima in Mexico, Filme de Papel in Brazil, or Red Post Studio in Peru, and artists like Uruguayan filmmaker Alfredo Soderguit ("Anina"), María Verónica Ramírez ("Anima Buenos Aires"), and even Oscar-winner Juan José Campanella ("Underdogs"), the landscape of the medium in the region looks promising.
Among these emerging talents, Argentine animator Nicolás Villarreal is one of the most achieved. His first short "Pasteurized"
(Pasteurizado) premiered in the Shorts Corner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012 where it got a great reception. His follow-up "Nieta" (Granddaughter), inspired by his relationship with his grandmother, also premiered at Cannes and won an award at Tiff Kids International Film Festival. "Nieta" was among the most talked about short films during the 2014-2015 awards season. Villarreal's new project, "The House of Colors" (La Casa de Colores), showcases the eclectic styles the artist embeds in his character design and backgrounds, as none of his shorts thus far follow a distinct visual pattern. Instead, they all explore diverse possibilities within the medium. This is the filmmaker's third animated short with Red Clover Studios.
Read More: Dazzling Simplicity: Dir. Nicolas Villareal on His Awards Hopeful Animated Short 'Nieta'
This new short is inspired by an original story from the mind of the filmmaker's sister, Justina. Both siblings co-wrote the screenplay. The story takes place in the city of La Plata, Villarreal's hometown in Argentina, during the 1970s. The narrative centers on a young girl who believes she is being followed by trees after watching a particular TV show. She becomes fascinated with the house she's seen on screen and tells her mother she wants to live there. Once they arrive, the girl realizes it's nothing like she imagined it. However, she will discover the reason why she felt the trees where following her.
Here is the first teaser trailer for the upcoming animated short:...

The film is based on the beloved children's book series and will feature Ben Whishaw as the title bear about town in London after Colin Firth exited the role in June. But that's not all. Read on! And since The Weinstein Company has moved Paddington to that date, that means they're pushing back their release of of the animated family comedy Underdogs to April 10th, 2015 now. That film, directed by Argentinean filmmaker Juan Jose Campanella, follows Jake (Matthew Morrison of "Glee"), a shy-but-talented foosball player.
