Flawed homage
hellholehorror22 September 2022
This is an interesting experiment in trying to modernise classic Italian films of the seventies and eighties. It tries to pay beautiful homage to classics such as Profondo Rosso (1975) but ends up falling short of schlock Italian cinema like The House of Clocks (1989). Even though it is a relatively short film it is still very slow which I find a very common issue with the films this is paying homage to. The acting is mostly solid and the characters are engaging enough that you'll keep watching to the end. If you accept that the detective character is meant to be a joke then I think he's tolerable, if not then he's painful to watch. Locations are varied and interesting. The film looks natural rather than creative. Some technical inconsistencies with the exposure and grading do detract from otherwise fine cinematography and sound design. I wish that the ambition had been higher, if it had I think they would have pushed themselves further to improve the pacing, story and entertainment. Overall a fine watch but lacking a spark that could have made it very engaging.
