Plot: Will Ferrell learns that one of his closest friends and collaborators is now trans. Unsure of the ground rules in the next stage of their relationship, the two drive from New York to Los Angeles together and reconnect.
Review: Will & Harper is a gentle, often hilarious documentary about two friends reconnecting after one comes out as trans. The fact that one of the friends is Will Ferrell made it a must-see for me at Sundance. But, it has a lot of resonance beyond its showbiz aspects, with it a nuanced portrait of a life in transition. It starts with essentially being about how the world views Ferrell’s friend, Harper, but eventually, it becomes more about how she views herself.
It’s a complex question because Harper Steele made her transition later in life, with her being sixty-one as the movie starts. She’s interesting, having been the...

Will Ferrell has some pretty cool friends. That shouldn’t come as any kind of surprise to his fans. He appeared on “Saturday Night Live” for seven seasons and still keeps in touch with co-stars like Seth Meyers, Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig. Less familiar, but no less fascinating, is former “SNL” writer Harper Steele, who befriended Ferrell when he first joined the show, believing in the crazy cut-up when others were still skeptical of his talent.
Structured as an on-camera road trip between two longtime friends, fueled by laughs and tears and the occasional “Borat”-style stunt, “Will & Harper” gives the general public a chance to meet this incredible woman. Technically, Ferrell is meeting her for the first time, too, since Steele spent the first six decades of her life as a man. Will Ferrell and longtime friend Harper Steele discussed the origins of their road-trip documentary Will & Harper at The Hollywood Reporter’s studio during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
Ferrell and Steele have been best friends for 30 years and worked together at Saturday Night Live when they were both launching their Hollywood careers in comedy. Their new film documents the pair taking a cross-country road trip together following Steele coming out as a trans woman.
“The conception of the whole discussion, for some reason in my head, was a documentary,” Ferrell said. “Of course, I made it clear to Harper, ‘I don’t want to exploit our friendship, but this could, I think, be just a wonderful way for us to explore this topic. Obviously, for me to learn, ask all the questions that I have about what you’re going through and who you are, have you changed?'”

"The Boys" universe is continuing to expand — and now the franchise is headed to Mexico. That's right! Amazon MGM Studios is now developing another show in the ever-growing universe based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson titled "The Boys: Mexico." While it's still in the very early stages, the show has assembled a pretty impressive team behind the scenes to get the ball rolling.
According to Deadline, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is set to write and executive produce the new Mexican-set spin-off. What's more, Gabriel Luna ("Andor") and Gael García Bernal ("Werewolf by Night") are also on board as executive producers and might also appear on screen, though they wouldn't be taking on major roles. Plot details for the series currently remain under wraps but the report states that the series is expected to eventually film in Mexico, rather than in the U.S. or Canada, for example.

The Boys universe is expanding yet again with The Boys: Mexico, a new series offshoot from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Deadline has learned. Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal are set to executive produce and are considering taking on acting roles though neither would be major roles, sources shared exclusively with Deadline.
Details regarding the premise are being kept under wraps.
A search is currently underway for a co-showrunner to join creator, writer and executive producer Dunnet-Alcocer, who is now working on the script. The team behind The Boys: Mexico, which will be shot in the Latin American country, is working on budgets for the new series and they have yet to begin casting, sources said.

Exclusive: Adrian Martinez (Renfield) has booked a supporting role opposite Rami Malek in Amateur, the new thriller that James Hawes (Slow Horses) is directing for 20th Century Studios.
The film, for which Gary Spinelli penned the most recent draft, tells the story of Charles Heller (Malek), a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them. When it becomes clear they won’t act due to conflicting internal priorities, he blackmails the agency into training him and letting him go after them himself.
Martinez is set for the role of Carlos, a CIA tech and Heller’s closest friend. Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson are producing the pic, with Malek exec producing.
Martinez can currently be seen playing Chris, the traffic cop buddy of Awkwafina’s Rebecca, in Chris McKay’s horror comedy Renfield for Universal, which hit theaters on April 14th.

Hulu’s list of new releases for March 2023 features an event long in the making.
On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

It’s ironic but unavoidable that the greatest annual celebration of film should be a television special — but that’s just how it is. March often means Oscar season, a time for cinephiles to boot up that small screen you use for movies and use it to see if they win any awards during a telecast.
If you don’t have TV service anymore, Hulu has you covered with a pre-Oscars telecast as well as two red carpet specials before and after the main event. Though the ceremony itself won’t be livestreamed on Hulu, it will be added the next morning, like regular ABC programming. Awards viewership has been in general decline over the past several years, but next-day streaming gives curious viewers a chance to join the conversation and boost those Oscar ratings after the live show. It’s also a chance for superfans to pause and rewind...

For its list of new releases of February 2022, HBO Max is bringing back one of its biggest original series.
The Ridley Scott-directed sci-fi epic Raised by Wolves helped launch HBO Max back in 2020 and now it’s finally back for another season. Raised by Wolves season 2 premieres with three episodes on Feb. 3. This season will continue the conflict between future atheists and theists on a remote planet, while two androids raise some kids.
February 2022 also sees the end of another, more recent HBO Max hit. Peacemaker airs its finale on Feb. 17. Thankfully that same day sees the premiere of another exciting original. Dream Raider is a Mandarin-language sci-fi thriller that carries some big Inception vibes.
There aren’t many original movies of note this month, but there are a lot of recent hits coming to HBO Max as library titles. Nightmare Alley arrives on Feb. 1, followed by The Many Saints of Newark on Feb.

Exclusive: Adrian Martinez has signed on to star alongside Nicholas Hoult, Nicolas Cage, Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz in Renfield, the monster movie that Chris McKay is directing for Universal Pictures.
The film based on an original story outline from The Walking Dead and Invincible’s Robert Kirkman centers on Renfield (Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).

Netflix has released the first clip for their new Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams comedy, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga and it’s… something. The movie follows Ferrell and McAdams as aspiring musicians who get a chance to represent their country by competing in the world’s biggest song competition.
The clip features the leads in full-on Game of Thrones cosplay outfits and they’re on what looks like an island in Scandinavia captured by Ridley Scott, with lots of aerial shots, wintry landscapes and ocean waves. It’s actually more of a music video or perhaps an audition to appear in the Eurovision song contest than a clip from the film though, as the two sing passionately while playing on their matching red keyboards.
Of course, Ferrell has made a career of parodying different worlds. Whether it’s local newsmen in the ‘70s, Nascar, figure skating,...

Before “Slow Jam the News” featured the likes of Brian Williams, Chris Christie and President Barack Obama, the late-night segment was the brainchild of “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” writers Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin. The pair were responsible for many of the show’s early viral segments, spinning their sketch-comedy background and love of music into widely-shared segments like “Ladysmith Snack Mambazo” and “History of Rap” featuring Justin Timberlake.
But during four years of writing near-daily content for “Fallon,” Riddle and Salahuddin produced lots of song and sketch ideas that never made it to air — or even to rehearsal. “We wrote a lot of songs for Jimmy that wouldn’t have been appropriate for his brand or for NBC, so we tucked a lot of them away,” said Riddle.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday.
This week’s question: What is the worst performance by a great actor you usually love?
Carlos Aguilar (@Carlos_Film), The Wrap, Remezcla, MovieMaker Magazine
Collectively, Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have been enlisted to enhance films by Almodovar, Spielberg, Larraín, Korine, and, of course, Alfonso Cuarón; in addition to many more efforts by the world’s leading directors. Both have also tried their hand at directing, with Luna having a more notable run behind the camera, and more recently basked in the attention of worldwide mainstream success in the form of “Coco” and “Rogue One.”
Yet, buried underneath that steady stream of good marks and auteur-driven opportunities, most of which this critic has been a champion of, is “Casa de Mi Padre.” Matt Piedmont’s debut feature, a Spanish-language satire starring Will Ferrell,...

Will Ferrell‘s filmography has been, more or less, stacked with his popular brand of outrageous, improv-style comedy. The classics are well-known (“Anchorman,” “Old School” “Step Brothers,” “Talladega Nights,” “Elf“) but duds have happened as well (“Semi-Pro,” “Land of the Lost,” “Bewitched,” “Casa De Mi Padre” “Get Hard,” “The Campaign“).

We love Will Ferrell, but it’s been a while since he’s starred in a truly great comedy. Let’s face it, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” and “Zoolander 2” were disappointments, “Get Hard” wasn’t what it could be, and while I think that “Casa De Mi Padre” is pretty underrated, it never found an audience. But this summer he’s swinging for the fences with “The House.”
Co-starring with fellow ‘SNL’ alum Amy Poehler, this one has a pretty good premise, following a couple who run an illegal casino operation, looking to raise some much needed cash.

Will Ferrell Has an Idea for a Political Satire About the Mexican Border, So Brace Yourself for That
Will Ferrell, known for his sophisticated, subtle, and — let's be honest, pretty hilarious — work in Zoolander, Anchorman, and Talladega Nights, wants to do a satire about America's relationship with Mexico. In an interview with The Guardian, Ferrell discussed his taste in political comedy, and revealed that he and Anchorman director Adam McKay have an idea "for a film about two guys who go down to defend the border [with Mexico]." The project sounds a bit like the English version of Ferrell's Spanish-language—and better-than-you-might-expect—Casa De Mi Padre, or possibly a down-South version of The Other Guys, though it will undoubtedly stir up a lot more angry Facebook statuses. But as Ferrell sees it, getting a strong reaction is part of the job. "All we try to do is to hold up a mirror to what is going on," he told The Guardian. And if that mirror reflects some ugliness? Well, Ferrell...

10 teams. 10 positions. One Will Ferrell. Are you ready to rumble with the one, the only, Señor Ferrell?? HBO's next sports faux-documentary (following the absurdly hilarious 7 Days in Hell) is one titled Ferrell Takes the Field, in which Will Ferrell plays all 10 positions in baseball playing on 10 different teams in one day. I really admire what HBO is doing with Funny or Die and these sports sketches, sort of extending the online content into something that is worthy of being presented cinematically (and if you haven't seen it, I recommend Casa de mi Padre). This may not be groundbreaking, but it looks like it will make me laugh. Here's the full-length trailer for Brian McGinn's Ferrell Takes the Field, direct from HBO's YouTube: "There's nothing more American than grabbing a hotdog and heading to the ballpark to watch 9 men from the Dominican Republic make magic on the field. [Well,] 8 Dominicans and 1 guy from Irvine,...

Ferrell’s Casa De Mi Padre took the Latin American telenovela to the woodshed, while The Spoils of Babylon (The Spoils Before Dying being a sequel) went toe-to-toe with big-budget epic miniseries of the 1970s and 80s like The Thornbirds and oligarchic oilpatch melodramas like Dallas. Most of the reactions I saw roll by in my social media timelines this weekend to the film "A Deadly Adoption" were along the lines of, "What the hell did I just watch?" I can understand the confusion. And it's awesome. "A Deadly Adoption" aired Saturday on Lifetime, and it is, by any metric you want to use, a completely typical Lifetime movie. What makes it stand out is that the film stars Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, and there's nothing about the film at any point that would tip that this is meant as a joke. The film opens with a party being thrown by Robert (Ferrell) and his wife Sarah (Wiig), during which Robert casually remarks about how they're going to have to fix the dock soon, just about the time Sarah walks down to stand on the dock no matter what Robert says. She's six months pregnant,...

More casting news for the upcoming Star Wars Anthology spin-off titled Rogue One, being directed by Gareth Edwards. With shooting starting up soon, they're finalizing casting and so far we've seen them making some excellent choices: Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed are confirmed. And now Variety can confirm a few others: Diego Luna and Ben Mendelsohn. The plot, revealed at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim a few months ago, follows a band of resistance fighters on a daring mission to steal the Death Star (plans). Luna will play a lead role alongside Jones and Ahmed, however Mendelsohn is apparently playing the lead antagonist (or "primary villain" as he's being called). Now this new movie is really starting to come together. Mexican actor Diego Luna has appeared in a number of roles in various movies, taking on more lead roles recently. He's been in: Y Tu Mamá También, Frida, The Terminal,...

Jon Stewart’s first film is passionate and principled, as I expected, but also hopeful, almost serene, and even gently amusing, which I did not. I’m “biast” (pro): love Jon Stewart…
I’m “biast” (con): …but was a little worried whether he could pull this off

I had a lot of hopes for Jon Stewart’s first foray into narrative cinematic storytelling, which he’s never done before. I expected something passionate, principled, and political. In these I was not disappointed… and I was also pleased to discover that he has an aptitude for telling a complicated story that plays on multiple levels, both personal and cultural, in a smartly streamlined, easy to swallow way. What I wasn’t expecting was his tone in Rosewater: hopeful, almost serene, even gently amusing.

What else can you say other than this looks messed up? Well, it looks messed up in all the right ways. A not retiring anytime soon Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, and many podcasts) gives us our first real good look at his upcoming horror film, Tusk. Based on a prank craigslist ad that Smith and friend Scott Mosier discussed in depth on their Smodcast postcast, Tusk tells the story of a crazed old man attempting to turn a young podcaster into a walrus. Yep, a walrus. It can’t be emphasized enough that this film looks insane and twisted on every level. The film stars Michael Parks (Red State, From Dusk Till Dawn), Justin Long (Dodgeball, Jeepers Creepers), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), and Génesis Rodríguez (Casa de Mi Padre) and is set to be released by A24 Films this September 19th.

Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele have an impressive and possibly doomed dedication to making detailed send-ups of genres with which their audience is almost certainly unfamiliar. Their 2012 movie "Casa de mi Padre," which Piedmont directed and Steele wrote, featured a Spanish-speaking Will Ferrell in a deadpan homage to telenovelas and Spaghetti westerns, complete with loving recreations of shoddy production values. Their new project "The Spoils of Babylon," which premieres on IFC this Thursday, January 9th at 10pm and, like "Casa de mi Padre" is produced by Funny or Die, is a spoof of '70s and '80s event miniseries, with some nods toward the more bloated, bombastic side of filmmaking from the era. "The Spoils of Babylon" is a miniseries itself, made up of six half-hour installments supposedly cut down from an original 22-hour run -- or so Eric Jonrosh tells us. 6. The Spoils of Babylon
The Spoils of Babylon is an upcoming American comedy miniseries by Saturday Night Live veterans Andrew Steele and Matt Piedmont, directed by Piedmont (Casa de Mi Padre), and starring Tobey Maguire, Kristen Wiig, Tim Robbins, Jessica Alba, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, and Will Ferrell. It’s doubtful that any other sitcom on the small screen will be able to rival the star-power of this IFC mock-miniseries. The show is intended to be a spoof of the epic-scale TV events prevalent on American network television in the 1970s and 80s such as The Thorn Birds and Rich Man, Poor Man. If the first scene from IFC's upcoming miniseries "The Spoils of Babylon" is any indication, the Will Ferrell and Adam McKay-produced program is going to be incredibly weird. A spoof of generation-spanning sagas like "The Thornbirds," "The Spoils of Babylon" was created and written by Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele ("Casa de mi Padre") and stars Tobey Maguire and Kristen Wiig as the adopted son Devon and the biological daughter Cynthia of oil tycoon Jonas Morehouse (Tim Robbins). The series, which premieres with two back-to-back half-hour episodes on Thursday, January 9 at 10pm, seeks comedy in forbidden love and, apparently, economist Adam Smith. Jessica Alba, Will Ferrell, Jellybean Howie, Val Kilmer, Haley Joel Osment, Tim Robbins, Michael Sheen and Steve Tom also star, with cameos by Molly Shannon and David Spade and the voice of Carey Mulligan. Executive producers Will Ferrell and Adam McKay will skewer sweeping, overblown miniseries like "The Thorn Birds" in "The Spoils of Babylon," a six-part saga based on the novel by the legendary (and fictional) author Eric Jonrosh. The series, which is produced by Funny or Die, will premiere on IFC on Thursday, January 9 at 10:00 pm, and has a star-filled cast that includes Jessica Alba, Jellybean Howie, Val Kilmer, Tobey Maguire, Haley Joel Osment, Tim Robbins, Michael Sheen, Steve Tom and Kristen Wiig. Ferrell, as Jonrosh, will introduce each episode of the sprawling take of the Morehouse family, one that involves pseudo-incestuous love, the oil fields of Texas, the army and beyond. The series is created and written by Matt Piedmont and Andrew Steele, the pair behind "Casa de mi Padre," and like that movie looks to be very straight-faced -- check out the trailer below.

Will Ferrell likes to make commercials. He's done regional ads for Old Milwaukee, a Super Bowl spot for Scorpion Beer to help the release of "Casa De Mi Padre," and he's back once again, with more product weirdness and another movie to promote. Ron Burgundy has emerged to front six spots for the Dodge Durango and is touting, in Ferrell's unique, surreal way, the manliness of the vehicle. It's mildly amusing stuff, though we've seen this riff before from Ferrell and better, but we suppose if this marketing synergy has to happen, we're glad they're putting some thought into it. Frankly, it's better than every other man-vehicle ad which has a truck driving through canyons and creeks, hauling lumber or boulders, usually tilted at some absurd angle. Watch below. Mexico City — English speakers need subtitles to understand the movie and probably Google to know where they've seen the star, if at all.
But a movie featuring a Mexican actor whose shows have been a TV staple in Mexico for years has taken Hollywood by surprise.
The movie "Instructions Not Included," with Eugenio Derbez as actor, director and one of the writers, turned in the biggest Spanish-language opening ever over the Labor Day holiday weekend in the U.S., according to studio estimates Monday.
It took in $10 million and ranked fifth at the box office, competing with blockbusters such as "The Butler" and Disney animation "Planes" that were shown in 10 times more theaters.
"Latinos are becoming more and more the population. In a way, you can count on them to be an anchor audience," said Charles Ramirez Berg, media studies professor at the University of Texas and author of "Latino Images in Film.

There are some comedies that look terrible from the start. You see who’s in ‘em, what they’re about and decide to keep your money in your pocket.
And then there are those comedies that emerge only once every few years. Not for them the lazy sequel, the last, spluttering breath of an exhausted franchise; no, these are actual funny jokes and well-rounded characters. And so, having watched the trailer a few hundred times, you excitedly tell your friends that this, this is the film that will restore their faith in cinema. They’re not convinced, so you throw around words like ‘edgy’ and ‘self-referential’ and tell them to stop rolling their eyes. This must have worked because, the next thing you know, there’s a ticket stub in your hand. You find your seat, slap a big, expectant grin on your face and prepare for the time of your life.
