Part of his “American Lives” output, production on Luce took place in November of 2017 and becomes Julius Onah‘s third feature following in the footsteps of the distinctly indie The Girl Is in Trouble and big budgeted (45 million dollar price tag) The Cloverfield Paradox. Shot in NYC, Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Tim Roth and Sundance “it” actor Kelvin Harrison Jr., the worldly filmmaker has had a long gestation for post prod.

J.J. Abrams' WWII Film Overlord is Confirmed to be the Fourth Cloverfield Film and It's Done Filming
It's been speculated for some time now that the J.J. Abrams-produced film Overlord would be a part of the Cloverfield universe, but now it has been confirmed by sources close to /Film. The film has already completed shooting and the last we heard, Paramount Pictures will be releasing it in October of this year.
The film stars Wyatt Russell and Jovan Adepo as American paratroopers that are dropped into enemy territory outside of Normandy during the D-Day invasion. It's not until they arrive at their target they realize that they are a part of something more complicated than a simple military operation. They are forced into battle against supernatural forces as part of a Nazi experiment.
Overlord was directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) from a screenplay written by Billy Ray and Mark L. Smith (Captain Phillips and The Revenant), which means the script is going to be really good.

The rumor mill is always running during Sundance, and the latest shared by Reliable entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider on Twitter has to be one of the craziest yet regarding the next Cloverfield film, which is said to be titled Cloverfield Station:
Overheard on the ground at Sundance: New Cloverfield movie may be heading to Netflix. No confirmation yet and I'm heading into a movie. Just passing along, since the delays Have been suspicious...

That's a completely wild rumor to be spreading, and if it's true, that's even wilder. Personally, I don't believe that anyone in their right minds would sell the film to Netflix unless they were given a ridiculous amount of money. 10 Cloverfield Lane made $110 million at the box office, and while I know Netflix isn't one to shy away from a high price tag...that seems as though it would significantly cut into...

Paramount Pictures recently launched a viral promotion for their upcoming sequel to Cloverfield, which you can check out here. The movie was previously known as God Particle, but now, a rumor has surfaced on Reddit that says the new title of the film is called Cloverfield Station. The Redditor made the discovery when they noticed an FX lighting artist named Rui (Ray) Xu on Linkedin who had listed Cloverfield Station among his credits.
As you might imagine, since this discovery we've learned that there is a Facebook account and Instagram account that include that title, as well as domain names for CloverfieldStation.com and CloverfieldStationmovie.com. None of this has officially been announced, but it's looking like this is going to be the title of the movie. In case you don't remember what the movie will be about, here's a previously released synopsis:

News of an upcoming J.J. Abrams project should always be taken with a grain of salt, given his habit of surprising audiences with his “mystery box,” but here’s something to mull over: Bad Robot has moved “God Particle” off its schedule and placed a new “Cloverfield” on it. It’s already been speculated that the two are in fact one and the same, despite the different release dates — “God Particle” was slated for February 24, while the third “Cloverfield” installment has been penciled in for October 27.

A week or so ago, we heard that the J.J. Abrams-produced sci-fi film God Particle (which is probably just a temporary working title) is going to be the third entry in the Cloverfield franchise. But that's news to Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the actress who starred in the movie. Production has wrapped, and when ScreenCrush asked how the new movie would fit into the slowly-emerging "Cloververse," she seemed surprised:
I actually have no idea. That is news to me. When I did the project it was a total standalone sci-fi, space thriller. So I couldn’t tell you how it’s connected. I don’t know if that’s just a rumor.
Remember, this is an Abrams-produced project, so secrecy is of the utmost importance. Of course she's not going to let any details slip this early. But this isn't too surprising. If you remove a couple of very small references...

Earlier this year, it was revealed that a sequel to J.J. Abrams’ 2008 film “Cloverfield” was to be released after being filmed and developed in secret. Dan Trachtenberg’s “10 Cloverfield Lane” was released to positive reviews and a strong commercial performance. Now, The Wrap reports that the upcoming J.J. Abrams-produced film “God Particle” is actually a third “Cloverfield” film. A source close to the project says that Abrams and Paramount Pictures are developing more films for the shared universe and both parties are aiming for one “Cloverfield” film per year.

Following word that David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw will get into the Bad Robot business with God Particle, a new casting update has made this project all the more promising. Variety has word that the J.J. Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) and Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond) have scripted God Particle, with Julius Onah (The Girl Is in Trouble) directing for a release on February 24, 2017.

Denis Villeneuve‘s massively intriguing, potentially disastrous Blade Runner sequel has further upped its credibility: according to Variety, the project’s added Robin Wright in a “key role” about which, of course, nothing is currently known. The Hampton Fancher-penned, Roger Deakins-photographed picture will be set decades after Ridley Scott‘s original, bringing aboard Ryan Gosling in the lead role and featuring the return of Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard. The rest will be revealed on January 12, 2018 — or when details start leaking from the set this July.
It’s almost a matter of time before any actor as ubiquitous as Jonah Hill gets into the directing business, so take it as a little surprise when Variety tells us he’s expected to helm his own screenplay, Mid ’90s, which reportedly concerns “a young boy coming up in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s learning life lessons with his skateboarding crew of friends.

Bad Robot has been quietly developing a movie called God Particle for a while now, and though a vague plot synopsis has been revealed, many are wondering whether or not this film will actually serve as another entry in the "Clover-verse," the anthology of movies that began with Cloverfield and continued (in a spiritual sense) with 10 Cloverfield Lane. But while we likely won't know if that's true for some time, at least we know who will star in the new movie: Variety reports that David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha-Raw are in negotiations for the J.J. This is great news, because they're both fantastic actors. (Look no further than Selma and Beyond the Lights for examples.) Mbatha-Raw's casting isn't much of a surprise because she previously worked on the Abrams-produced NBC spy series Undercovers.

Trouble in Mind: Onah’s Homage to Neo Noir an Indie Echo of Device
In development for the past five years since it was initially announced, director Julius Onah’s directorial debut The Girl is in Trouble at last reaches a theatrical release. Impressive as a first feature, Onah’s homage to vintage New York noir looks to explore modern examples of urban fugue in the fluctuating metropolis. In several regards, this is a refreshing example of tried and true tropes, focusing on the perspective of a black character (an uncommon element in noir) and conveying Onah’s familiarity with his inspirations. However, like many of the titles it invokes, style can’t compensate entirely for substance, and third act inevitabilities find the film’s initial energy plummeting before the end credits.

Exclusive: Will Smith has decided to drop out of director Julius Onah’s Brilliance, the Legendary Pictures adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel that has a script by David Koepp. Universal is releasing the film, which was to begin production this summer. The film’s start has moved a couple of times, and the exit came down to timing. Legendary has been in negotiations with Noomi Rapace to star alongside him. Will Smith’s reputation for guaranteed box office returns took quite a knock with the disappointing performance of Men In Black 3, followed by the disastrous After Earth. Legendary Pictures are hoping for a different result with Brilliance, however, which Smith has been closely circling for a number of months. To boost their chances, they’ve now locked the excellent Noomi Rapace into the picture, too.

News
Will Smith may see his future away from the next Men In Black and Independence Day sequels, but he's still clearly interested in sci-fi movies. He's expected to take the lead in the big screen adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel, Brilliance, which tells of a world where rare people are born with incredible abilities, and get labelled 'brilliants'. Smith will be playing one of said brilliants, who has to hunt down a terrorist.
And it looks as it Noomi Rapace, best known for her work in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, will be joining him in the film. She's appearing in Child 44 later in the year, although her role in Brilliance isn't yet known.

Breaking: Legendary Pictures is setting Noomi Rapace to star in the Julius Onah-directed Brilliance, the film that is expected to also star Will Smith. The adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel, scripted by David Koepp, focuses on a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called “brilliants.” At the center of the story is a federal agent with great hunting gifts who is drafted to hunt down a terrorist, another such brilliant who intends to start a civil war. Onah directed The Girl Is In Trouble, and Smith has been circling the project since February. Joe Roth and Palak Patel are producing with Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni, the Legendary execs who’ll release this film under the Universal banner. As Julius Onah moves on the bigger and better things (last year, Onah was been tapped by Paramount and J.J. Abrams, to direct the sci-fi thriller God Particle; and this year was signed by another major in Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures, to direct an adaptation of Marcus Sakey's novel Brilliance), his feature film directorial debut, the under-seen and still unreleased the indie crime caper The Girl Is In Trouble will screen this weekend at the New Voices In Black Cinema Festival in New York. Columbus Short stars in the film which was executive produced by Spike Lee. Short plays a...

Having just wrapped on the Glenn Ficarra/John Requa comedy “Focus,” it looks like Will Smith is ready to give the sci-fi genre another chance. He’s in talks to lead “Brilliance,” which is based on the Marcus Sakey novel of the same name. In a world where one percent of all children are born as “brilliants,” Will Smith plays federal agent Nick Cooper, a fellow brilliant who’s especially gifted at hunting down terrorists. But in order to track down a brilliant that’s been deemed the most dangerous man alive, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in. The project’s been setup at Legendary Pictures and the script was penned by David Koepp (“Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”). On board to direct is relative newcomer Julius Onah (“The Girl Is In Trouble”), who also has the Jj Abrams-produced project “God Particle” on his slate. Curiously, there...

The Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures adaptation of the Marcus Sakey novel Brilliance became one to watch when they hired up and comer Julius Onah (The Girl Is In Trouble) to direct it. Now, Will Smith is in very early talks to make the project as soon as May, I’ve confirmed. The Wrap broke it. I thought Smith showed a sense of fun as Jimmy Fallon’s first Tonight Show guest this week (particularly in the eveolution of hip-hop dance) than he’s displayed on screen. Following After Earth, an original movie with a fresh director sounds more promising for him than yet another reprise, this one Independence Day 2, which he stepped out of recently. The David Koepp-scripted adaptation, which Joe Roth and Palek Patel are producing with Legendary, is set in a world where a rare set of people are born with extraordinary abilities and are called “brilliants.

It's one of a handful of 2012 titles still yet to be released that we're excited about, based on what we know of it. It's been revealed this morning that Julius Onah's The Girl Is In Trouble will make its world premiere, finally, after about 2 years of following its progress, at the New York International Latino Film Festival (Nyilff) this year. As a recap... Columbus Short stars in this New York City-set crime caper, executive produced by Spike Lee. We've been ontop of the film since it was announced way back in 2010, and I actually thought it would debut at one of the major festivals last year, but it didn't; and...

#23. The Girl is in Trouble - Julius Onah We can bet that this picture is a lock --- a 2012 debut was probably a more accurate prediction for a festival premiere to Julius Onah's debut feature. I predicted that The Girl Is in Trouble and the Filmmaker Mag 25 New Face Onah would be in Park City -- that production still stands. If this has an edgy, mean streak in it, a Park City at Midnight showing would be welcome. Gist: Written by Mayuran Tiruchelvam and Onah, August’s one night stand with beautiful Signe turns ugly when he discovers footage of a murder on her phone. He knows the dead guy – Jesus Guzman, a dealer. And the killer – Nicholas Feinman, son of New York’s most powerful investment banker. There’s a knock on the door - It’s Angel, Jesus’ brother and feared drug enforcer. Maybe August knows where Jesus is?...

Update: I’ll repost this as new titles are added to the list…
Compared to recent years, 2011 is shaping up to be one of the better years for black cinema, or blacks in cinema, in terms of both volume and variety.
With For Colored Girls now mostly behind us, I’d like to look ahead to what we can expect to see in theaters in 2011.
I did a bit of research, and these are the titles I came up with, all (or most) of which I expect we will see in 2011. Feel free to add any you know of that I didn’t include. I should note that I’m only counting films in which the characters that black actors play are central to the film’s plot, or films directed by black filmmakers, regardless of whether the cast is comprised of black actors or not.

Among Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film people of 2010, the first of several first-time filmmakers on our list, Julius Onah' debut is backed by executive producer Spike Lee and comes carrying an eclectic combination of young players in Columbus Short, Wilmer Valderrama and Alicja Bachleda. We started keeping tabs on The Girl Is In Trouble when we profiled indie producer Jen Gatien and subsequently when the film's helmer Julius Onah was named to Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces” list, yesterday Shadowandact.com showed off a batch of new stills and a synopsis of the feature proving this may well be in the final stages of post-production and potentially ready for the first major film fest of the season. The film stars Columbus Short, Wilmer Valderrama, TV show House’s Jesse Spencer and Alicja Bachleda of Ondine fame. Adding to the hype is Spike Lee on as an exec producer and Chris Trujillo as production designer. The Gist: The longer synopsis obtained by the site: NYC. Currently in post-production, with a 2011 release planned, with sales company Wild Bunch representing the project… here’s our first look at Columbus Short, Alicja Bachleda, Wilmer Valderrama and a few other cast members in action in Julius Onah’s The Girl Is In Trouble, his debut feature, which Spike Lee is executive producing.
We also have a much longer synopsis of the film, as opposed to the 1-sentence we’ve previously posted until now; this lengthy summary highlights plot points, and reads as follows:
NYC. Unemployed bartender and failed DJ August receives a 2 a.m. call from beautiful Swedish Signe. Their one-night-stand turns ugly when he discovers footage of a murder on her phone – a Caucasian man killing a young Latino. August knows these men. The dead guy’s Jesus Guzman, a dealer. #10. The Girl Is in Trouble - Julis Onah This Sundance edition should be a vintage one for 2010 members of Filmmaker Magazine 25 New Faces and this could possibly include, Julis Onah's The Girl Is in Trouble. A Graduate Film Program at Nyu and supported by Spike Lee, he if quickly assembles his feature film debut, which also counts as his thesis film (Onah comes across as a workaholic) then Park City becomes a strong possibility. Columbus Short, Wilmer Valderrama, Alicja Bachleda, Jesse Spencer and Paz de la Huerta topline the thriller written by Mayuran Tiruchelvam and Onah, this follows a Lower East Side bartender who unravels a mystery that connects a desperate young woman (Bachleda) to a missing drug dealer and the scion of New York's most powerful stockbroker. Park City at Midnight slot or a SXSW birth likely. * Producers: Mark W. Campbell, Jen Gatien, Dana Offenbach, Robert Profusek and Ryan Silbert(Ioncinema.

In August, I mentioned that the film was in the works, with Columbus Short starring; Julius Onah’s (one of the 2010 Shadow And Act Black Filmmakers To Watch) The Girl Is In Trouble, with Spike Lee will executive producing the project.
In the film, described as a noir thriller set in New York City, a bartender (likely played by Short) “unravels a mystery that connects a desperate young woman (played by Alicja Bachleda) to a missing drug dealer, and the scion of New York’s most powerful stockbroker.”
Production is already underway, with Wilmer Valderrama also attached to the project.
I just found out that a website for the film has been created, although there’s nothing there right now, just a static page, with what looks like a picture of Alicja Bachleda (above), as well as the title of the film. But, I suspect more will be added to the site in due time,...
