Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. HBO Max offers this description of the fourth and final season’s remaining episodes: “The Titans – with the exception of Gar – are returned to the Temple of Trigon and rush to find Sebastian and Mother Mayhem before Sebastian summons Trigon. Along the way, they come across a prophecy that may require Kory to make a huge sacrifice to save the world.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Some science fiction can embolden the human spirit, inviting us to step out into a wider universe to experience the vast and unimaginable wonders it has to offer. Some science fiction shows us how human ingenuity will solve even our greatest problems and improve our lives for the better.
Other science fiction points out that those vast and unimaginable wonders are terrifying and will probably try to eat you, while human ingenuity is better at nothing more than finding really imaginative ways to kill people.
This month, Horror Channel will be showing a week of films that fall into the latter category with its Sci-Fear Week from Saturday the 20th November through to Friday the 26th, at 9pm each night.

Soon we’re going to be watching Zack Snyder leave behind the quest for a “grown-up” superhero movie and return to his old playground, the zombie movie. Army of the Dead looks like a huge amount of fun and leaves us wondering why nobody has made a zombie heist movie before, but one of the plot details that has leaked about the film is that Area 51 plays a significant role.
This suggests that the zombie plague may be extraterrestrial in origin. Like most subversions of the zombie apocalypse genre (although Army of the Dead promises a much smaller and more contained “apocalypse” so that all that cash they steal is still worth something) this is actually a plot twist you can trace back to the earliest roots of the genre.
In Night of the Living Dead, the zombie apocalypse is the result of strange radiation emerging from a probe that has returned from Venus.

Castle Rock Season 2 Episode 1
Reinterpreting a beloved Stephen King villain like Annie Wilkes is a tall order, but Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex) makes it look easy. Channeling a nervous energy and an obsessively clean mouth (although no "cockadoodies" just yet), Caplan completely transforms into the unstable Wilkes for a new take that pays homage to Kathy Bates' legendary turn in Misery while also revealing a different side of the character.
Caplan is absolutely fantastic, shuffling nervously from scene to scene, trying to keep a low-profile even though she's all some of the other characters can see in the room. This version of Annie is odd, but not exactly in a menacing way, at least not at first.

The live-action film adaptation of that most iconic work of Japanese manga and anime, "Akira," has been in development for well over a decade with numerous directors and actors attached at various times.
Before Justin Lin, Jaume Collet-Serra and the Hughes brothers were linked, it was Irish short filmmaker Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") who was attached to direct the project which would shift the focus from the New Tokyo of the original to 'New Manhattan'.
Like the original story it would follow Kaneda, the leader of a biker gang, who must save his friend Tetsuo from government medical experiments after potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities emerge.
A few years ago Robinson quietly slipped out some concept art from the film which seemingly went by unnoticed until it resurfaced this weekend over at Bloody Disgusting. That art, which comes from Robinson's official site includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tetsuo, Chris Evans as Kaneda,...

"X-Men" and "Star Wars" franchise producer and writer Simon Kinberg has come on board to produce a feature film adaptation of the stunning sci-fi short "The Leviathan".
At the same time, writer/director Neill Blomkamp ("District 9," "Chappie") has also joined the project as executive producer. Jim Uhls ("Fight Club," "Jumper") has already penned the screenplay for the feature.
Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") created the 3.5 minute proof-of-concept piece which is set in the 22nd century and follows involuntarily drafted pilots who hunt giant whale-like flying creatures through the skies. In a week the short has racked up nearly two million views.

Ruairi Robinson has been a name known by online movie blog readers for some time beginning with his 2011 short Blinky about a killer robot (watch it here) and then in 2013 came his debut feature film The Last Days on Mars (read my review here), which didn't exactly blow the doors off, but didn't close them either. Now he's back with another short film, this one serving as a proof of concept with hopes to turn it into a feature film and it has definitely found support, both from online viewers and now from a couple of high profile supporters. Premiering just under a week ago, Robinson's The Leviathan tease (watch it below) has generated millions of views on Vimeo and YouTube. Set in the 22nd Century, the "Moby Dick"-inspired story finds mankind has colonized many worlds as the ability to travel at the speed of light is now a...

You might think that Simon Kinberg would be too busy writing scripts and serving as producer on a variety of different projects across a number of studios, but apparently he’s found time to help shepherd another potential film. He’s teaming up with Chappie director Neill Blomkamp to assist The Last Days On Mars director Ruairi Robinson with his latest embryonic film idea, The Leviathan.Robinson has been generating lots of interest for the high-concept sci-fi story, putting out a proof of concept video (see above) that has been racking up the views and seeing his phone ringing off the hook with producers interested in joining the team. Kinberg, who has a first-look deal with Fox, brings a wealth of experience in the genre and potential studio backing. Blomkamp is coming off of his robot pic, which Kinberg produced, and is working on his idea for a new film set in the Alien universe.

Every time director Ruairi Robinson drops a video, the internet goes nuts. I can't really say I blame anyone either because Robinson captures an excitement and refinement that we don't always get to see from short internet videos. So yeah, it's exciting to see Hollywood A-level visual effects in a clip that's only a few minutes long and that you know comes from the intense and difficult work put in by a very small group of people.
We've been following Robinson for a while and while I'm still trying to figure out how he's only made one feature film to date (and though it has some problems, no one can argue that The Last Days on Mars ( [Continued ...]...

From District 9 to Whiplash to Deadpool, many proof-of-concept teasers have been good enough to push a greenlight from studios, but The Leviathan may be the mother of them all. Ruairi Robinson may not be a name you're familiar with, but after this video, it should be one you'll remember. The director has only one feature-film to his name (The Last Days On Mars) but this concept trailer for The Leviathan blows most modern-day sci-fi flicks out of the water. What follows is a glimpse into the future where hard labor includes the pursuit of gargantuan creatures. The style that follows is part Blade Runner, part Avatar, part Pacific Rim, and All awesome! Enjoy!

The last time we saw director Ruairi Robinson is was with his feature debut The Last Days on Mars. Now, he's back with this proof of concept/pitch trailer, made with the support of the Irish Film Board, for The Leviathan, a new sci-fi concept from Fight Club screen writer Jim Uhls that comes across as Moby Dick with space whales. And yes, the below trailer is as awesome as that description suggests. The Leviathan -- Teaser from Ruairi Robinson on Vimeo. Again, this is only a pitch, but the strength of the visuals should at least get it noticed, and hopefully the story will seal the deal, as I find myself really wanting to see this on the big screen.

We last saw him (or a few of us did) as a human terraformer dealing with dangerous alien microbes in The Last Days On Mars. But for a new movie, Liev Schreiber will be the unearthly one, threatening Chloe Moretz with terror in The Fifth Wave.According to The Wrap, Schreiber is in negotiations to play a high-ranking military official named Vosch in the film. Moretz is starring as Cassie Sullivan, a young woman who survives the four waves of deadly extra-terrestrial attacks against the Earth’s population that have left our planet a darkened, doomed place where its new conquerors roam in near-human form, picking off survivors.Cassie, who is hoping to rescue her younger brother, prefers to travel alone, figuring she’ll be safer that way. But then she meets Evan Walker (Alex Roe), a mysterious young man who could be her big hope.Susannah Grant adapted the...

A horror movie set in space? Mark reckons you might find some of the various components of The Last Days On Mars a little familiar...
It wouldn't have been hard to slap a “The Thing Meets Gravity” or a “28 Days Later in space” strapline on the marketing campaign for The Last Days Of Mars, but it's arrived with markedly less fanfare than most mainstream horror movies released this year, pushed back from its intended release last September.
The film is a nuts-and-bolts sci-fi horror flick that played out of competition at last year's Cannes film festival, during directors' fortnight, but it's the interesting way in which it's been executed that marks it for such distinction, more than any real sort of innovation or unpredictability.

Screenwriter Clive Dawson writes about the thirty-eight years of taking The Last Days Of Mars to the screen.
Most feature films undergo a gestation period lasting several years, and The Last Days On Mars is no exception. However, the seeds of this particular film were first planted as long ago as 1975. The short science fiction story, The Animators, by acclaimed author Sydney J Bounds, was originally published that year as part of the Fontana paperback anthology, Tales of Terror from Outer Space. I first read the story in the early 1980s and, even today, it remains one of the most evocative and creepy short stories I’ve ever read.
In brief, Syd’s story takes place during the first manned expedition to Mars.

McDonagh crafts a cracking thriller that's both comical and spiritual, distinctively Irish but in no way oblivious to its country's flaws. Gleeson bears the film, and the cross, magnificently. His small-town priest is informed he'll be murdered in a week's time. He knows who's going to do it, but we don't. The potential suspects reflect a society shattered by faith, and lack of it.

Excluding Total Recall, movies that involve Mars seem to be generally quite rubbish. Will The Last Days On Mars buck the trend and turn out to be something enjoyable? Sadly, the answer is a resounding no. Think Alien meets The Walking Dead and you’ll start to get the vibe about this movie. Nothing wrong with taking influence from those two amazing productions. Alien had people on the edge of their seats as it ramped up the tension scene after scene. And The Walking Dead brought incredible characters and great writing. Both productions also brought amazing antagonists to the table. Unfortunately though, The Last Days On Mars can’t hold a burnt out candle to either. Starring Liev Schreiber, Elias Koteas and Romola Garai amongst an other wise unknown cast, it follows the story of a bunch of astronauts who succumb one by one to a mysterious infection after one...

It’s safe to say that Liev Schreiber isn’t the most famous actor in Hollywood, nor is he the most obviously successful or instantly recognisable; he’s the sort of guy who turns up now and again, usually when you least expect it, delivering fine and competent performances on an array of different projects. Known for his rugged good looks and gruff voice, he fits the bill as bonafide action hero, stoic protagonist, terrifying antagonist, or – better – a character in that “grey” area.
Aside from his film work, Schreiber is also a talented and acclaimed stage actor, and has won praise for his work in the plays of Mr. William Shakespeare. “He has a swiftness of mind,” the New York Times wrote, “which convinces the audience that language is being coined in the moment. His speech, unlike that of the merely adequate supporting cast, feels lived rather than learned.

It's no Moon or Solaris – instead the fates of the characters in this forumlaic sci-fi are determined by its stars' relative fame and bankability
I had high hopes for The Last Days On Mars. All of the signs were good. In the United States it's distributed by Magnet Releasing, owned by that creepy overdog Mark Cuban but still importing a nice line of eccentric non-American B-movies, both good (Down Terrace) and bad (Donkey Punch), mixed in with a Malick and a Von Trier here and there. And look at this cast: Liev Schreiber, Olivia Williams, Elias Koteas – no lightweights there. Makes you suspect that there might be a decent script in there somewhere, harbouring enough juicy, lysergic, mind-bending ideas to make up for the budgetary shortcomings. Perhaps I was hoping for something like Duncan Jones's soulful, melancholy Moon or maybe Soderbergh's ice-blue Solaris (I wasn't fool enough to expect...

I won’t even deny the fact that I have somewhat of a man-crush on Liev Schrieber. It’s not that I’m physically attracted to him, though he is quite strapping, it’s that I think he is one of the most underrated actors working today. He has a very demanding screen presence, which is why I jokingly refer to him as “The Panty-Dropper”. I generally try and stay up-to-date on any projects with which he is involved. Recently he got his own show on Showtime called Ray Donovan, where he plays the title role. The show is pretty great all around, but it most certainly wouldn’t be what it is without Liev. When I heard that he was making another jump into the horror genre, I anxiously awaited the opportunity to take The Last Days On Mars in. I knew literally nothing about the film, except for...

"12 Years a Slave"
What's It About? Based on the memoir by Solomon Northup, "12 Years a Slave" stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man who was kidnapped from his home in New York and sold into slavery. Northup ends up on a plantation run by the cruel Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender) and his equally awful wife (Sarah Paulson), who take special delight in tormenting another young slave named Patsey (Lupita Nyong'o).
Why We're In: The movie took him Best Picture Sunday night -- see director Steve McQueen quite literally jump for joy here -- for good reason. Nyong'o took home the Best Supporting Actress award for her wrenching performance, and John Ridley won for his adapted screenplay.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Releasing March 7 Hmmmm, what's a bigger release, the highest grossing film of 2013 or the Oscar's Best Picture of 2013c That's what you're picking between this week and we'll start with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which actually won't hit shelves until Friday, but last I checked Friday was still part of this week. I can only assume they will have a big "to do" surrounding this release on Friday, midnight launches and whatnot. So, if that's your thing have a look around your town and I'm sure you'll find plenty of Hungerites wanting to get their hand on this one early right there with you.

In 2002, Warner Bros. acquired rights to make a live-action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. Plans for it didn't start to really materialize until 2008. That is when Irish short film director Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") was brought on board to direct. At that time, the script was being written by Gary Whitta ("The Book of Eli"), and Leonardo DiCaprio would've been one of the producers. Of course things fell apart and the project would end up in two other directors hands (Albert Hughes and Jaume Collet-Serra) before WB finally pulled the plug on it in 2012. Below, you will find several pieces of concept art that conceptual illustrator James Clyne created for Robinson's version of Akira. You'll also find some artwork that Clyne created for Tom Cruise's Oblivion and Gavin Hood's Ender's Game. Akira Concept Art By James Clyne Oblivion Concept Art By James Clyne...

Dallas Buyers Club Pretty solid week of new releases starting with one of the better films of 2013 and one we're sure to be talking about more leading up to the Oscars, Dallas Buyers Club featuring a pair of great performances from Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto and a strong performance from Jennifer Garner as well.
About Time Richard Curtis' About Time is one of the year's better romantic comedies along with the likes of Best Man Holiday. I'm sure there was at least one more, but those are the two that come to mind and with the unlikely pairing of Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson the movie comes as a nice little surprise. Oh, and it has The Wolf of Wall Street star Margot Robbie. So, that's a little bonus.
Jules and Jim (Criterion Collection) I still need to dig into this new Blu-ray edition of Francois Truffaut's Jules and Jim,...
