This is a great moment to be the Pet Shop Boys. The ultimate Eighties synth-pop duo are having a renaissance right now, just in time for the 40th anniversary of their classic hit “West End Girls.” They have a brilliant new album, Nonetheless, their zippiest of this century and one of their best ever. New fans are discovering them in films like Saltburn and All of Us Strangers. They even scored the ultimate 2024 status symbol: a beef with Drake, after Aubrey Graham used “West End Girls” without permission for “All The Parties.

Based on the number of movies you’ve seen recently, did you get the impression that there was more sexual content or less? Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) is set to join the cast of Now You See Me 3, the upcoming sequel to the magical heist franchise.
Exactly who Rosamund Pike will play in Now You See Me 3 is being kept under wraps, but it’s said to be a “pivotal role.” Perhaps she will be the latest target of the Four Horseman? Original cast members Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, and Morgan Freeman are expected to reprise their roles. Now You See Me 3 will reintroduce audiences to “the thieving illusionists known as the Four Horseman while introducing audiences to a new generation of magicians.“ The studio is also envisioning the sequel as the launching pad for the future of the franchise.

Luca Guadagnino believes filmgoers will endorse his Zendaya movie Challengers because it delivers “a canon of Hollywood golden age comedy – seductive fun with queerness.” The movie’s “big sell” is a shot of Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor kissing one another in various configurations.
Challengers is establishing itself as a Gen Z “date movie,” with a 75% female audience, mostly under the age of 24. Its high-powered social media campaign triggered a $25 million opening weekend globally, defying the pre-summer box office torpor.
The movie has also been well received by Gen Z reviewers who are faithful to their lexicon of film criticism – male characters are approvingly deemed “heteroflexible,” females “polyamorous,” etc.
It was a surprise to his fans that Guadagnino, an Italian filmmaker, set out to make an American-set sports movie (he is not a sports fan) about a tennis world to which he was alien. As with his other films,...

“We stand at the summit of Mont Blanc, the White Mountain. Highest peak of the Alpine arch and inspiration for the first Montblanc fountain pen, designed over 100 years ago for the adventurous traveler who wants to leave his mark.”
Say what you want of Wes Anderson’s oeuvre, but his gift for ad copy speaks for itself. With a commercial track record that includes collaborations with American Express, SoftBank, Stella Artois, Prada, and H&m, Anderson’s touch seems to translate as well to sales as it does to cinematic ennui. His most recent commission, an advertisement campaign for Montblanc’s 100th Anniversary of its Meisterstück pen, features Anderson himself, sporting a whispy walrus mustache, as well as frequent collaborators Jason Schwartzman and Rupert Friend, all posing as a group of mountain-climbers with a particular affection for the freedom and inspiration offered by Montblanc’s products.

After a shortened 2022-23 season, Saturday Night Live returned a bit later than usual to kick off its 2023-24 run.
The writers strike affected both the end of last season and the start of season 49; the end of the labor action on Sept. 25 meant a mid-October start for SNL — with former castmember Pete Davidson hosting — rather than the late September or early October premiere the show usually has. (The cast is covered under a different SAG-AFTRA contract than the one actors are currently striking against, so they can perform without crossing picket lines.)
The show’s cast returned intact from last season, with James Austin Johnson and Sarah Sherman moving up from featured players to repertory players. Chloe Troast joined the cast as a featured player.
Below is The Hollywood Reporter’s updating guide to season 49’s SNL hosts and musical guests.

Since the millennium, there is substantially less erotic content on our screens – with changing audience tastes and ‘intimacy coordinators’ to blame
The advent of explicit films such as Poor Things, Saltburn and All of Us Strangers has been heralded as marking a revival of sex on screen – in the face of a reported lack of interest from Gen Z audiences. However, a new report suggests that in fact the Hollywood sex scene is declining fast: there is almost 40% less sexual content in major films than there was at the start of the millennium.
Commissioned by the Economist from data analyst Stephen Follows, the report assembled data on the 250 highest-grossing films each year since 2000, and found movies released in 2023 had just over 60% of the erotic content found in the top 250 in 2000. Broken down by genre, the decline was steepest in action movies (a drop of approximately 70% over the same period) – while...

It’s not your imagination: The amount of sex in movies has dropped sharply this century.
Despite a streaming boom, which has more content distributors with permissive content boundaries than ever before, a new study finds sex in film has declined dramatically since 2000.
A study by film data analyst Stephen Follows cited by The Economist that tracked sex and nudity in major live-action films — with each instance ranked on a scale from “none” to “severe” — found the level of sex content in cinema has fallen by almost 40 percent. The number of films with no sexual content at all has risen from 20 percent per year to roughly 50 percent.
On the other hand, some of the scenes that are shown in movies nowadays are more graphic than what was permitted in the past. Examples cited include erect penises (in movies like May December) and characters performing oral sex while their partners were menstruating (Saltburn,...

There are movies that make you want one thing more than anything else: for whatever's happening on the screen to end as quickly as possible.
Reddit users selected popular movies that made them want just that.
1. Saltburn, 2023
In 2020, Emerald Fennell made her debut with the tragicomedy Promising Young Woman. The movie won her an Academy Award for Original Screenplay and gave endless opportunities to create her next project – Saltburn, a rip-off of The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The structure of the movie begins to fall apart in the middle as Oliver "skillfully" (actually clumsily) begins to work his way to the top. Many viewers positioned the movie as one of the most scandalous of the year – Saltburn undoubtedly shocks with some scenes (we feel sorry for every cemetery worker who's seen it), but seasoned viewers were tired of its extreme predictability.
2. Avatar, 2009

Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (Amazon MGM) nearly doubled any other gross in its opening weekend, taking an easy #1 with an estimated $15 million. That’s respectable for the Zendaya-starring erotic tennis drama.
However, another week with this level of a #1 film isn’t what theaters need. After a month of intriguing new releases, none of them are likely to gross as much as $75 million in the U.S./Canada. Theaters faced a double burden — too few films released, and too few perform — but May could be different: It starts the summer season next week with “The Fall Guy” (Universal).
“Challengers” was not an automatic sell. It has Zendaya and excellent reviews (83 Metacritic score). Recent R-rated, sexually charged dramas are unusual these days. “Saltburn,” also from Amazon MGM, grossed $11 million in its release — $4 million less than the “Challengers” opening. “No Hard Feelings” with Jennifer Lawrence had the same opening gross last summer.

As expected, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers scored an easy win this weekend, with a $15 million weekend, just a touch softer than we predicted earlier this week. The tennis-cantered love triangle was no doubt boosted by Zendaya’s star power, with her hotter than ever in the wake of Dune: Part Two’s blockbuster showing this winter. IMAX screens were dominated by Zendaya in one form or another, with both Challengers and Dune 2 playing in the format this weekend thanks to the latter’s re-release.
Notably, the film posted Guadagnino’s best box office opening to date, with the weekend total more than doubling the total take of his previous biggest opener, Bones and All. It’ll be interesting to see if Challengers can hold up in the coming weeks, with The Fall Guy opening next weekend and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes opening the weekend after. With...

Game, set, now what to make of this match?
“Challengers,” a sexy, subversive, R-rated drama set in the world of tennis, easily took first place at a sluggish domestic box office this weekend with $15 million from 3,477 locations. On one hand, it’s a respectable result for an artsy movie aimed at discerning, adult audiences, but what keeps it from being a championship performance is that “Challengers” has a hefty $55 million budget (to say nothing of its marketing costs). The Amazon MGM Studios release will need strong word-of-mouth if it’s going to keep rallying — and next week brings Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” a Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt action-comedy that marks the start of summer blockbuster season. The competition only stands to get fiercer from here.

Look around and you just may find yourself amid a Pet Shop Boys renaissance.
Of course, the English duo — consisting of Neil Tennant, 69, and Chris Lowe, 64 — never went anywhere. They have been steadily putting out music since their landmark 1984 debut, Please, which instantly established them with timeless songs like “West End Girls” and “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money).”
But Pet Shop Boys’ deep catalog has been plundered in recent years everywhere from Madison Avenue (“Opportunities” showed up in a Super Bowl ad for Allstate) to Hollywood (several classics were used to wonderful effect in two of last year’s zeitgeistiest movies, Saltburn and All of Us Strangers). Their signature sound is suddenly everywhere — wistful and longing, danceable and intellectually sophisticated synth-pop. Their 15th studio effort, Nonetheless, drops tomorrow and features more of that infectious trademark music.

Sue Kroll, head of global marketing for Amazon MGM Studios, has worked on the launch of every kind of movie under the sun, from blockbusters such as “Harry Potter” and “The Matrix” franchises to streaming originals such as the recent reboot of “Road House” and the buzzy new rom-com “The Idea of You.”
The discipline of marketing has changed dramatically in recent years, with more digital tools and metrics at her disposal. Amazon MGM Studios has unveiled the first trailer for Zoë Kravitz’s twisted directorial debut “Blink Twice.”
Originally titled “Pussy Island,” the movie follows Frida (Naomi Ackie) and Jess (Alia Shawkat) as they are charmed by tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) and lured to his private island for a weekend getaway. Jacob Elordi is swapping eras and countries for Paul Schrader’s “Oh, Canada.” In the new feature, the Australian actor portrays Leonard Fife, a Vietnam War draft evader who restarts his life in Canada and becomes a documentarian. Richard Gere plays the older version of Elordi’s character as he reflects on his life while dying of cancer and gives one final interview to share his secret. The feature is an adaptation of late author Russell Banks’ 2021 novel “Foregone.” Banks and director Schrader previously collaborated on film “Affliction.”
“Oh, Canada” is premiering in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking Schrader’s return to the festival since 1988’s “Patty Hearst.” Schrader recently shared a photo with fellow auteurs Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas, who will also be in attendance at the festival, with Coppola debuting “Megalopolis” and Lucas receiving an honorary Palme d’Or.

Season 2 of HBO’s Euphoria ended on a fairly positive note, with the series being HBO’s second most-watched show of all time when it aired in 2022. Watching live on Sunday nights became popular thanks to the countless memes that sprouted from the show’s dramatic plotlines. But now that it’s been two years since Lexi’s play and the fight that ensued, and probably another year until filming for the next season even begins, it’s hard to see a full third season as the right step forward.
This isn’t to say that script delays are entirely Sam Levinson’s fault. The WGA strike lasted for nearly five months thanks to the AMPTP’s refusal to meet the guild’s reasonable terms, and the unexpected death of star Angus Cloud during that time also means that script revisions were likely needed as soon as work was able to begin again.

Tom Ripley has become a genre in himself. In 1955, author Patricia Highsmith published “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” a viciously smart psychological thriller featuring an all-time villain at its center. A small-time con artist who slithers him way into the social circle of a rich playboy he develops a consuming obsession with. Both charming and horrifying, with a thirst for wealth that’s equally as relatable as it is repulsive, Ripley burns on the page as an absolutely indelible character.
Unsurprisingly, Ripley has become the type of juicy role that actors kill to play. And that’s lead to three genuinely great adaptations of the novel. The book first found its way onto screen as “Purple Noon,” starring a prime Alain Delon as Tom Ripley. And then, of course, there’s the acclaimed 1999 adaptation from director Anthony Minghella, featuring an all-star cast led by Matt Damon as the title character with Jude Law,...

Heatseeking filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has signed for representation with WME, and with Black Bear for management.
Schnabel’s breakout directorial effort “Pet Shop Days” played both the Venice International Film Festival and SXSW this cycle, scoring distribution from Utopia for a 2024 theatrical release. Starring Jack Irv, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard, the film tells of a drug lord scion on the run from his powerful family. Slumming it in New York in a haze of sex and drugs, he seduces an equally lost young man and pulls him into the city’s underbelly.
The provocative debut also hit festivals in Chicago, Montclair, Morelia, Santa Barbara and Sarasota. Schnabel was also awarded the Leffest Lisboa Film Festival’s Tap Revelation Award.

Margot Robbie’s production company looks set to take on a film based on Avengelyne, a comic book character created by Deadpool’s Rob Liefeld.
If reports are accurate, Booksmart director Olivia Wilde is set to make Avengelyne, a take on the comic book character created by the mind behind Deadpool, Rob Liefeld. It’s the second project Wilde has lined up at Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment.
According to Deadline, 'Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in Heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of Hell, to confront the Devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from Heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood,...

Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and “X-Men” producer Simon Kinberg are joining forces for a feature adaptation of “Avengelyne,” a comic book character from “Deadpool” co-creator Rob Liefeld.
Wilde, whose filmmaking credits include “Booksmart” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” is attached to direct. Robbie’s company LuckyChap and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara are producing. Kinberg, a writer and producer of “X-Men” tentpoles, will also produce the film.
The project doesn’t have a home yet, so the creative team will try to sell the film to studios and streamers in the coming weeks. It’s unclear who will play Avengelyne, an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. Christian Bale is Frankenstein’s monster in a first look at Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride.” The director, who is teaming up with Warner Bros. for the period film, shared images on Instagram from a recent camera test for the movie. Bale’s monster makes his debut alongside Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley as the eponymous bride.
Gyllenhaal has assembled an all-star cast for “The Bride.” Starring opposite Bale and Buckley are Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening. The film’s crew includes “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.
“The Bride” is set in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the iconic Frankenstein lore. From the early days at the Edinburgh Fringe to recognition as a gifted character actor with comedy chops, Lolly Adefope has always cherished the camaraderie of the cast
Switch on any of your favourite comedies from the last five years and there’s Lolly Adefope, glamorous and wry, not just stealing the show, but holding it aloft as she marches out of the shop to the sound of rapturous alarms. She was Fran, the droll, sexy best friend in Shrill, a comedy about, among other things, the politics of being fat. She was Ruth Duggan, the reporter who treated Steve Coogan’s character with venomous contempt in This Time with Alan Partridge. She was Lady Daphne in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn, exquisitely disgusted by her husband and the aristocratic world in which she has landed and, in fact, by everything. It’s tempting to carry on, actually, listing Adefope’s supporting roles,...
