From Sergei Eisenstein to Andrei Konchalovsky, Russian filmmakers perfected a formula for manufacturing social reality out of highly concentrated mixes of activist outrage and artistic chutzpah. Political hindsight overshadows their unparalleled toying with film language, but it also deepens great works of art like Aleksandr Dovzhenko’s Earth and Mikhail Kalatozov’s I Am Cuba. These two enthralling synergies of sight and sound were made with the support of a communist machine that would eventually fail the people of the Soviet Union and Cuba, but they’re first and foremost exaltations of the rebel spirit, hurled at audiences with a fierce conviction and belief in cinema as a propagandistic vehicle for change.
For the Soviet Union, I Am Cuba was an opportunity to promote socialism abroad during de-Stalinization in the Khrushchev era, and for Cuba it was a way of staking out a cinematic presence. So it is that the...

Exclusive: Mainstay Entertainment is producing a documentary on professional tennis player Aleksandra Krunic. Norman Aladjem and Madeleine Buisseret are producing for Mainstay along with sports documentarian Natalie Jowett, who wrote and directed an Emmy-winning documentary on the tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics and was nominated for an Emmy as a producer on the NFL Network documentary America’s Game and the Iran Hostage Crisis.
Production is scheduled to begin April 8 at the Billie Jean King Cup (the female version of the Davis Cup) in Lisbon. No distribution has been set.
The documentary will focus on the reality of what it’s really like being a professional athlete away from all the glitz and glamour we’ve become so used to seeing. The conceit of the project is to highlight the antithesis of the global star both on and, more importantly, off the court.
Mainstay has cultivated a diverse slate of projects across platforms.

Onir, one of a handful of out and proud Indian filmmakers, is speaking out about the current scenario for LGBTQ filmmakers in the country.
“There are a lot of non-Indian queer films and series available on streaming and also a lot of queer short films and reel videos being made across the country. Having said that, I feel the mainstream industry and streaming platforms when it comes to queer content are mostly still taking baby steps, and also looking at our stories from a very heteronormative gaze,” Onir told Variety.
“The queer gaze is largely missing. What is disappointing is that it’s largely about a tick mark of having done the right thing — right from actors to platforms and studios that use the phrase ‘but we are already doing one queer story.’ I don’t understand what that means. We are not one homogeneous story, we have many stories.

A new miniseries has been announced, and it looks fantastic.
We look at the cast list. What do we see? Oh, another show starring Nicole Kidman. Or Jake Lacy. Or Kate Winslet. Or Betty Gilpin.
You get the idea.
Look, we get it. A miniseries has limited episodes to make an impact, and a recognizable name can be a big draw.
Since it's become commonplace for renowned movie actors to make the move to television, particularly miniseries, why wouldn't a studio jump on the chance to nab a big name?
It's a winning formula -- literally.
Nicole Kidman is an Oscar winner. What television producer wouldn't want her attached to their project?
She's also snagged a couple of Emmys for her work on HBO's Big Little Lies. She's proven her worth as a TV star.
The same can be said about Kate Winslet, who similarly made the jump from movies to television.

After kicking off February with discussions of Albert Lewin’s 1945 adaptation of The Portrait of Dorian Gray (listen) and the perfectly serviceable remake of Friday the 13th (listen), we’re delving into the twisted mind of Pedro Almodóvar with his 2011 thriller The Skin I Live In.
In The Skin I Live In, skilled plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Ledgard (Antonio Banderas) has tried to develop a new super skin ever since his beloved wife was horribly burned in a car accident 12 years prior. Finally, Ledgard has created a skin that guards the body, but is still sensitive to touch. With the aid of his faithful housekeeper Marilia (Marisa Paredes), Ledgard tests his creation on Vera (Elena Anaya), a woman he keeps prisoner against her will in the basement of his Spanish mansion.
Being an Almodóvar film, there’s much more to this twisted plot than meets they eye.

Living Colour frontman Corey Glover has formed a new band, Sonic Universe, who have shared their debut single “I Am” from their forthcoming album, It Is What It Is, out May 10th.
The group sees Glover in collaboration with guitarist/producer Mike Orlando (Adrenaline Mob), bassist Booker King, and drummer Taykwuan Jackson.
Glover’s longtime band Living Colour — which remains active — is a good frame of reference for Sonic Universe. On “I Am,” the band lays down a very Living Colour-esque brand of funk metal while Glover’s commanding voice soars in full flight. Doubling as the album opener, the upbeat jam is a fitting way to launch a new chapter in the singer’s career.
Running 10 tracks in length, It Is What It Is was produced, engineered, and mixed by Orlando at Sonic Stomp Studios. Pre-orders are available via earMUSIC.
As mentioned, Glover still remains active with Living Colour...

It's a new year, and that means the Oscars are getting closer. The 96th Academy Awards are coming to ABC on March 10, and they're even starting a little earlier this year, slated to begin at 7:00 pm Et/4:00 pm Pt. After all, the ceremony is always far too long, so handing out the little golden guys an hour earlier than usual means Hollywood can get the after-party started sooner, and isn't that what the Oscars are really about?
ABC's late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel will again be hosting the show, which will likely avoid any new controversy out of the Oscars. Surely no one wants to deal with the host getting slapped on live television again. The only slapping that should be happening at the Oscars is slappin' da bass during the performances of the Best Original Song nominees, which will hopefully include Ryan Gosling doing a live...

Chicago – Arguably, the last great movie star was Burt Reynolds. His everyman attraction, his accessibility and of course his box office made Reynolds a compelling force during his peak in the 1970s. The CW Network will show the doc “I Am Burt Reynolds” on December 30th, 2023, directed by Adrian Buitenhuis.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
With a career in Hollywood dating back to the last days of the studio system, 1950s/60s TV westerns, and hanging with the Rat Pack, Burt Reynolds epitomized Hollywood superstardom while never ceasing to be a Florida “good ole boy.” From his beginnings in TV and low budget films, through to his breakout roles in “Deliverance,” and “The Longest Yard, onto the smash hit “Smokey and the Bandit” and box office dominance, “I Am Burt Reynolds” remembers an era and the man who defined it.

“What was interesting to me beyond what I knew of Ms. Wilkerson being just this incredible writer was this idea of caste,” shares “Origin” actress Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, “and her reintroducing it to us as Americans as a new language for us to consider social divisions in this country. And that was exciting to me.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Ellis-Taylor above.
Written and directed by Ava DuVernay, “Origin” tells the story of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Isabel Wilkerson (played by Ellis-Taylor), who wrote the book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” about the ways in which social hierarchies and oppressions around the world are about more than racial prejudice. They’re really caste systems, from the traditional Indian caste system to the persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust to the subjugation of African-Americans in the US.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.
