- First time novelist Kelly has won the Orange Prize and is being interviewed by the BBC. During the interview Kelly reveals that her novel is based on real life; when she was working in a homeless shelter and living with her best friend Natasha. When they invite a homeless man to stay as a guest in their flat, the lives of both Kelly and Natasha change forever. A debut production by women filmmakers and directed by Doug Rollins, this poignant and surprisingly light hearted film reveals how deep a friendship can be, set against the backdrop of perceived social failure and success.—Anonymous
- Kelly is an aspiring novelist who works part time at a homeless shelter and lives with Natasha, a civil servant who works in a job she hates. When Kelly invites Euan, a homeless man, to stay with them Natasha is extremely reluctant to have him as a guest. Kelly convinces Natasha to let Euan stay and her prejudices about Euan begin to break down as Euan tells her about his dying daughter in Glasgow. When Natasha faces her worst fear by losing her job, she unexpectedly goes to Euan for comfort and finally recognises the dignity within him. This inspires her to give Euan the money to visit his daughter and put her job loss into perspective. Although Euans visit is fleeting, we see that it inspires Kelly to write a prize winning novel and Natasha to discover her vocation as a teacher.
