In our interview with her at Sundance London back in May, Lake Bell explained that she'd always had the inclination to direct, but she was “steadfast on the path to being an actor." Now, a short year after helming a short film "Worst Enemy" and some episodes of "Childrens Hospital," the “It’s Complicated” and “How To Make It in America” actress’ feature debut "In A World" goes into theatrical release this week. The ensemble film — which won excellent reviews (us included) and the Best Screenplay award at Sundance — stars Bell as Carol, a voiceover artist looking to break into the Hollywood industry, who faces competition from her veteran voice star father (Fred Melamed) and his clique-minded male colleagues. Bell has assembled a solid supporting cast for her first film — Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino, Demetri Martin, and Nick Offerman, to name a few — and she’s already expressed plans for her marriage-themed follow-up,...

Lake Bell is about to begin another season of her own show, but she's happy to be a guest on one of television's top new hits, too.
The actress resumes her role as finding-her-way Rachel in the HBO comedy series "How to Make it in America" Sunday (Oct. 2) ... then two nights later, she turns up in the third episode of Fox's Tuesday ratings smash "New Girl," playing a co-worker and romantic temptation of Jess' (Zooey Deschanel) less-than-confident roommate Nick (Jake Johnson).
"Oh, that's great!," Bell tells Zap2it upon being informed her "New Girl" stint is about to air. "Liz (Meriwether, the show's creator, who also wrote the Bell-featuring movie 'No Strings Attached') and that team of people are such good friends, and I love Zooey. I'm just happy for them. It makes me so pleased, because I can't think of a smarter group. That's the kind of...

If you've seen No Strings Attached you're already hip to the fact that Lake Bell's motor-mouthed scene stealer is one of the film's true highlights. The funny actress -- who was at Sundance with her well-received short film Worst Enemy -- displays some of those same fast-talking chops in the latest edition of Movieline's Sundance video interview series. Ahead, watch the charming Bell discuss her awkward-but-hilarious directorial debut, why she hopes it will become her calling card, and how Hollywood is no longer a boys' club.

Who is she, and why does she think she has what it takes to take on the star-spangled icon? Read on to find out... "On my lists of things to do in my life—I mean, I campaign for it—is, I just want to play a superhero at some point," No Strings Attached actress Lake Bell told me at the Sundance Film Festival, where she premiered her writing and directorial debut, a short called Worst Enemy. "I got the guns! With superheroes you have to have this tickle of humor in there and you have to be a really great...

Though you won't see my press for them, the Sundance shorts are always fantastic. The folks who program shorts for Sundance do a tremendous job of selecting the right ones, because each year they seem to get better and better. This year we attended the opening night shorts program and fell in love with a short called 'Worst Enemy,' from actress-turned-filmmaker Lake Bell ('No Strings Attached,' 'What Happens in Vegas,' 'Childrens' Hospital').
'Worst Enemy' marks Bell's debut as a writer-director after co-starring in several major Hollywood films, and quite obviously on her way to starring in several more (seriously, she's the best part of 'No Strings Attached'). The short stars former SNL-er Michaela Watkins as a girl with all sorts of image and self-confidence issues who sort of dreams of being a normal girl with a normal life,...

The first screening I attended at this years Sundance film festival was Shorts Program 1, where I was privy to witness a grab bag of both excellent and sub-par short films. Short film programs are always a tricky beast, because when they are good they are great but when they’re not, they usually are painful to watch. Luckily, the good ones are what will stick with me after the fest and they showcased the talent of future filmmakers that audiences will definitely want to keep an eye out for. So without further ado here is a breakdown of what we saw, followed by our video reaction:
The Strange Ones (dir: Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff) This was the first film to play and was definitely a grade above the rest. Reminiscent of the restrained ambiguous style displayed by one of the most buzzed features at the fest, Sean Durkin‘s Martha Marcy May Marlene,...
