For a La Bruce film, very mainstream. Is that good or bad?
euroGary29 April 2014
Despite its subject matter, 'Gerontophilia' could mark Bruce La Bruce's entry into polite film-making society: in contrast to his earlier works such as 'Raspberry Reich' and 'Skin Gang' it is possibly his most accessible work to date.

Lake (no really), a young man in his late teens/early twenties, gets a job in an old people's home. This is close to being all his Christmases rolled into one, because Lake is turned on by the elderly. He becomes especially close - in more ways than one - to 81 year-old Melvyn (when a nurse describes Melvyn as being 'a very sick man' one might think as this is a La Bruce film that's to be expected, but she actually means he is very ill. I think.) Melvyn wants to see the Pacific Ocean one last time before he dies, and Lake tries to make his dream come true. But how will Melvyn fare outside the controlled environment of the home?

In terms of storyline, this is an interesting film, told in a linear, non-confusing fashion. And the acting is acceptable: if Pier-Gabriel Lajoie, as Lake, is a little stilted when speaking in English he's a lot more natural in his (I assume native) French; and Walter Borden, as the elderly homosexual, keeps the queeniness on a subtle, unembarrassing level. But let's be honest: what attracts a lot of people to La Bruce films is the promise of nudity: although a lot of it is cinema of the grotesque, there'll usually be some young, firm flesh on display. But there's precious little of it in this film: the very handsome Lajoie provides just one quick shot of his bare backside (and it seems unlikely the full-frontal shots of Borden will excite anyone except, y'know, gerontophiles). So while this may bring La Bruce to the attention of a whole new audience, his old fans may miss the chaotic nature of his previous films, as well as the flesh.

A Welcome Rarity
EdgarST12 May 2015
I think it helps a lot to be an old man to fully appreciate "Gerontophilia" in all its affective and humane dimension. In a condition as old age, in which we become invisible (something Mr. Peabody expresses in one scene), if invisibility does have its advantages at times, in others it becomes very dramatic because our dilemmas seem to have no space in the young people's perception and, as the evaluation given to this motion picture demonstrates, they only perceive half of its implications. A lovely little movie, maybe quite necessary, in which a young Canadian man who works in a geriatric clinic discovers his attraction to very old men and that it is not only a sexual attraction, but that he is capable of feeling love for them. A rarity in audiovisual production from all over the world and a highly welcome one.

Well made but the plot....WOW!
planktonrules11 June 2015
"Gerontophilia" was a very difficult film for me to watch and I am sure it would be for most viewers. This isn't a criticism--just a statement about the sort of topics you'll see addressed in this odd film. It's very challenging and isn't the sort of movie I could strongly recommend nor is it something for kids, but it is worth seeing if you are a patient sort of person and don't mind being shocked.

This Canadian film is a creepy story about a young man who works with the elderly. Why is it creepy? Well, over time Lake finds that he's become sexually attracted towards some of the elderly men in his care...and this isn't really the creepy part. However, his interest soon goes far beyond a passing fancy. Lake begins to not only fantasize about them sexually but even peeks at a naked man while he's sleeping and he pleasures himself while doing so. Clearly, this is NOT just about sexual attraction but crosses over the border...a very uncomfortable one indeed. After all, even if his love interest were younger or a woman, such behavior would most likely get Lake arrested! Fortunately, the film doesn't dwell on this too long...but I am sure that many viewers will be turned off by this. It's a shame really, as the film seemed to have too many interesting ideas but all together it just made the film confusing. In other words, having a young guy fall in love with an elderly person (male or female) could have been very good in a film that isn't a comedy like Harold and Maude. After all, while a taboo, what is wrong with a May-December romance? Most films that broach the topic give us the message that the younger partner must be a woman, so it is nice for a young guy to fall in love with an elderly person in a movie. But the film goes far beyond just love...and that is what is troubling.

The bottom line is that while I did think the plot was overly complicated and muddled by Lake being what many would consider a sex offender at the nursing home, the film dares to be different. More importantly, however, the film has some excellent things going for it. The music is just terrific and really works well with the movie. The directing (aside from a bad edit where Lake inexplicably changes sides of the bed in the same scene without getting up) is also very sweet and deliberate. I'd really like to see more from the director and I wouldn't object to a gay or gerontological theme- -just not these AND a creepy guy who goes way beyond friendship or even love.

Cute boy, BAD acting.
jtboone226 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Just no real acting skills among the whole lot of them. The ONLY redeeming quality was how beautiful the young man is. But from the first kiss, I was turned off. PLEASE, could someone PLEASE give these people lessons in how to kiss??? There is nothing more weenie wilting than kissing someone who has no idea how to do it. Just gross. And the whole revolutionary theme is sad. Directing is a total mishegoss. The motel bed scene is bad. Did he pull that used condom out of his ass? No intimacy from start to finish. So I guess giving it a three is being generous. I started at four. And silly queens trying to do a bar fight was as silly as they come. No. Just no. So bad. I will say the artist doing the sketches was quite good. Only lovely thing in the movie. Most of the soundtrack was not familiar but on target. Maybe a little too on target to the point of grinding it right in your face.

A controversial subject made palatable
brian-joplin25 March 2014
Bruce LaBruce's 'Gerontophilia' exists on one level as a bold and thoughtful exposé of the shocking treatment of geriatrics in some care homes, whereby they pass their days under heavy sedation so as to make them less of a problem to handle. Though well-scripted and acted, this theme is hardly novel, having been seen in many earlier films, including Henry Koster's delightful mixture of the tragic and comic in 'Mr Belvedere Rings The Bell'. What makes 'Gerontophilia' unique is its other level - an unusual account of the developing relationship between the octogenarian Mr Peabody (Walter Borden in a complex and completely convincing performance) and a youthful student, Lake, who decides to intervene and improve Peabody's quality of life. This decision is not, however, completely altruistic since Lake is one of that minority of young males who are turned on sexually by old men. It is to LaBruce's great credit that he treats this controversial subject with just the right amount of restraint, avoiding the lurid, but not being afraid to call a spade a spade. There are no actual lovemaking scenes in bed, but sufficient moments where Lake's attraction to old flesh is made manifest, at the film's ending through the medium of humour, earlier in a poignant scene where Lake sketches Peabody with, as one might say, no holds barred. The film of course has its flaws: Pier-Gabriel Lajoie as Lake is just too impossibly good-looking, though this is to some extent offset by the charisma of his performance and his unerring sense of fun. Also there's the suggestion, inferred rather than stated, that his curious sexual preferences stem from his relationship with his drunken mother, but this comes over as a trite rather than illuminating idea. These, however, are small matters. This movie is a charming and unpredictable insight into a sub-world which is not just French-Canadian but universal, and will be a welcome addition to the programmes of those art cinemas brave enough to show it.

Your Typical Dependably Bad Gay Film
macpet49-113 July 2015
There are precious few good gay films. It's just a fact. Usually the few good ones are foreign so this is disappointing because it was Canadian but that is almost American so there you go. Dialogue is stilted and script is formulaic. Actors try but plod along with material inferior that they attempt to embroider with a lifted brow here and there or a sad eye. The male star is pretty so he's a diversion but after the first swimming pool scene, you're ready to switch to reruns of 'Dark Shadows' TV show. Is it really believable that a very handsome young gay man would be smitten and erotically motivated by sagging flesh, wrinkles, fallen posteriors and pot bellies? I know it might exist (just like chubby chasers) but I find it difficult to swallow. It is very nice to fantasize about by someone like myself who am 65 and counting now and would like to justify still going to the gym, but...

Gay Harold and Maude
sfdphd21 June 2014
This film was so much better than I expected! I saw this at the SF Gay Film Festival tonight. Just hearing the premise, I couldn't imagine it being very realistic but it turned out to be completely believable to me. The young actor was so sweet and his affection/attraction to the older man seemed quite sincere. I could see Mr. Peabody through his eyes and see the beauty and fascination he felt, particularly through the drawings he made and the huge poster of Gandhi on his bedroom wall.

I was impressed by the convincing portrait of teenage rebellion portrayed by the young girl who is inspired by female revolutionaries throughout history and by the young man's ridiculous jealousy and drug/alcohol use while at the same time showing the reality of the older man's life. Mr. Peabody was excellent in his portrayal of an older man who is at first resigned to life in the nursing home and then perks up when he realizes this young man is interested in him. He shows how lively he can be once he is encouraged to be his full self.

This film has changed the way I think of older men in nursing homes....

A narcissistic old man's erotic fantasy
jm1070118 December 2014
Bruce LaBruce has a special fantasy. Here it is: a disarmingly beautiful 18-year old boy falls passionately in love with him NOT because he promises to put the kid in a movie but because he's old and ugly. BECAUSE he's old and ugly, not in spite of the fact that he's old and ugly.

Now, I'm neither young nor gorgeous myself, and I (and every other old gay man) may have a fantasy just like that tucked away inside of me. The difference is that I didn't make a move about mine. Despite what LaBruce thinks, watching an old man's erotic fantasy acted out on screen is not entertaining to other people.

On top of that basic flaw, this movie's screenplay is very, very, very stupid. As a comedy it's never funny; as a romance it's completely absurd; and as an erotic fantasy it's just embarrassing. The basic story, of a young man falling in love with a much older man, could be made into a really wonderful movie, but not in Bruce LaBruce's talentless, narcissistic ham fists.

Pier-Gabriel Lajoie is breathtakingly beautiful, but he can't act. Looking at him, with the sound off, and skipping every single scene in which he does not appear alone, is all that could make this turkey watchable. That movie would be about five minutes long.

Who is this film for?
injury-654476 October 2020
Not only is the subject matter completely bizarre and niche (in terms of a possible fetish audience), but it's handled in such an amateurish way. Poor Lake cannot act at all! At all! How did they convince the poor stupid beautiful boy to engage in this disaster? I feel so bad for him. What would his grandfather think?

An Odd Piece
SCManCA5 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
With a bit of shallowness I'll give it 5 stars for the beautiful young man who played the lead But also included in that 5 stars is a willingness to actually show such a beautiful young man becoming involved with an aging, and not-so-attractive older man. It's pure fantasy that anything like this would ever happen in the gay community where youth is treasured and placed on the highest rung of the social ladder. And to have such a good looking young man at the centerpiece of such a story really does take it into the realm of the fantastic.

But what the hell. In a world where younger good-looking straight men will date women no matter how old they are or what they look like, it is refreshing to see a slight difference in themes, even if it is just a movie. Because sadly younger gay adult man will barely give the time of day to a guy ten years older than him, much less sixty years older than him. So I will give kudos to this movie for that as well. Providing an escape out of the reality of what it is to be an older gay man.

And how awesome for the actor playing Melvyn. Wow. Making out with a hot young man who in real life, according to his bio, is a jock/hockey player, and a male CK model at the time. What an embarrassment of riches. I'm sure when he was introduced to his young costar he could hardly contain himself. Good for him! Score.

You have good vintage grapes, sir.
brinsonck-9080424 May 2020
Charming, sensitive, non-judgmental and comic portrayal of what is often seen as an awkward subject. Watching this and I wonder why. It's great to see this level of filmmaking from Bruce LaBruce and look forward to more from him, however charming his gay zombies and anarchists are! As already mentioned this is like a modern day Harold & Maude, which can only be a good comparison.

Fresh, fun and compelling comedy from the maker of 'No Skin Off My Ass'
azfad10 November 2014
The subject matter may be intimidating to some (a love story between a young man with a fetish for geriatrics, and an 83 year-old man) but this is a heartwarming treat. The dialogue is a little clunky at times but otherwise this is one of the finest road movies, of sorts, I have seen for many's the year. Bruce la Bruce, the fearless doyen of Queer Cinema, veers towards the mainstream in this and doesn't miss a beat. The performances are great, particularly Walter Borden, and the soundtrack is glorious.

All in all a fantastic film for all the family, once your family is not upset by the regular sight of young boy on old man action, that is.

Fetish or self-acceptance?
paulcreeden14 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I was extremely pleased with Netflix for carrying this title on its stream. Brave choice. It is ironic that a film shot from the opposite perspective, that of an old man who might pursue sex and love with a receptive much-younger man, would still be considered too taboo to stream on a conventional site. As a gay man who was once courted aggressively at 50 by a 25-year-old, I can attest to the validity of the subject matter.

That is what makes this film worthy of an audience. The acting is not its strong point, despite veteran Katie Boland's contribution. Pierre-Gabriel Lajoie as Lake has moments of protagonist charisma, but they come and go. He comes across as more confused than his character's behavior suggests. It would have been nice if his behavior was played as a form of more confident self-acceptance.

I can't imagine what it took to get this project funded. So I understand it was a shoestring production. With that in mind, it is amazing to me that it was able to portray the core theme with sensitivity and humor without seeming like a high school play. It was, however, unfortunate that Walter Borden's Mr. Peabody was played to stereotype. This was a constant reminder to me that it was a low-budget indie.

BLB Shines Again
norcalsrf30 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
A modern take on the Harold and Maude theme from a more modern viewpoint. The lead character is eye candy, fun to watch and has decent acting skills. This tale is fun to watch.

The cute couple's relationship is complex, twisted and endearing, something difficult to capture on film. Both seem to tread through life learning about themselves and their desires, exploring their sexuality and both seem content to be with each other while they try and comprehend their fascinations/fetishes.

As they delve deeper into their extracurricular activities they seem to drift apart while struggling with their own ability to make sense of themselves.

As Lake absorbs himself with Melvyn, he falls deeper into the relationship until he's outed by his coworker while Melvyn health takes a turn for the worse. It doesn't help his mom works for the same old folks home and goes ballistic when she finds out Lake's affair with Melvyn.

To squash the relationship the home drugs Melvyn into a cathartic state which angers and confuses Lake.

Everyone around Lake goes insane except Lake who initially denies the relationship but then frees his object of desire by kidnapping him with the help of his girlfriend.

As in Harold and Maude, Lake wants to free Melvyn so he can experience his last wishes all with the girlfriend's support.

This modern take on an old tale is very well done in the true BLB style.
