Actor Penn Badgley is all the rage at the moment thanks to the growing popularity of his Netflix series “You,” in which he plays Joe Goldberg. But while Joe has a whole new look for Season 4, Badgley himself has gone through quite the transformation over the years. From his soap opera days on “Young and the Restless” to scene-stealing work in “Gossip Girl” (the first one) to a charming performance opposite Emma Stone in “Easy A,” we’re running through Badgley’s career through the years in photo form. Take a walk down memory lane with us below, with the caveat that this is a photo gallery and not a video one and thus cannot include Badgley’s viral work on TikTok.

One may surmise that NYC-based guitar maestro Gary Lucas has the magic touch when it comes to collaborating with profound artists. He has found yet another formidable vocal foil in singer/songwriter Jann Klose. As you may or may not remember, Mr. Lucas was responsible for igniting Jeff Buckley's vocal prowess in their band Gods & Monsters and co-writing the two best tracks on Mr. Buckley's solo debut. It should come as no surprise that Mr. Klose handled vocals in the Buckley bio pic Greetings from Tim Buckley and has appeared at numerous Buckley tributes and multiple stage appearances with Mr. Lucas. "Fair Weather" is from their excellent stripped-down simple Americana-centric album Stereopticon (Cosmic Trigger Records). It's my favorite track from said album. Klose's smooth vocals perfectily compliment Mr. Lucas' acoustic guitar majesty. The video was directed by DeAngela Napier.

Read More: Review: Taissa Farmiga and Ben Rosenfield Improvise the End of a Relationship in '6 Years' Indiewire's Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the film industry worthy of your attention. Hannah Fidell's deeply emotional "6 Years" is a a purposely intimate experience. The newest feature from the "A Teacher" filmmaker focuses on Dan (Ben Rosenfield) and Melanie (Taissa Farmiga), a seemingly blessed and blissed out young couple who appear to have it all. As the film moves cleverly moves through time, however, it becomes clear that the golden pair might not be able to survive a series of increasingly violent upheavals. The film, which premiered at this year's SXSW Film Festival, is a true two-hander, and both Farmiga and Rosenfield breathe life into their complicated characters. Rosenfield's burgeoning cinematic career has been peppered with interesting roles in complex films, from "Greetings From Tim Buckley" to "Song One." He's...

We're nearing the end of The Hobbit trilogy as The Battle of the Five Armies is slated to arrive in December 2014. The film will culminate director Peter Jackson's 13-year-long, six-film voyage into J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth, and judging by the billions of dollars both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit have generated worldwide at the box office, there is no end to the thirst among moviegoers for all things Tolkien. With that in mind, to help fill that Gollum void, two different movie studios are planning competing J.R.R. Tolkien biopics.

After impressing everyone with his stellar Jeff Buckley impression in Greetings From Tim Buckley, Penn Badgley is now part of a Brooklyn-based band called Mother. Stereogum is premiering their second single, a track called "Victim" that has an wildly long (and satisfying!) sax solo and a pretty good idea of what Dan Humphrey sounds like when he's singing with his own voice. Brooding synths! Easy there, Lonely Boy.Hear their first single, "Easy", below.

Two further names are said to be in the running for the role of Dick Grayson (aka. Nightwing) in the "Batman vs. Superman" project over at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Yesterday came word that "Girls" star Adam Driver is the front runner for the role, one of five actors said to be up for the part of Bruce Wayne's estranged ex-sidekick. Now, Superhero Movies News claims they have learned of two more - Ezra Miller and Penn Badgley.
The most conventionally handsome of the trio, "Gossip Girl" and "Easy A" star Badgley has shown to have a solid talent and range, scoring good notices for the recent "Greetings From Tim Buckley".
Miller came to notice thanks to two very different portrayals of a high school student - a chilling psychopath in "We Need To Talk About Kevin" and a living out loud gay teen in "The Perks of Being A Wallflower". Both performances scored great acclaim.

Batman vs. Superman has been a hot topic this week. It all started with the Olga Kurylenko as Wonder Woman rumor. That lasted for about a day or so and then the attention shifted to Nightwing, who is all but confirmed to be showing up in the film. In fact, we heard last night that Girls star Adam Driver was wanted for the role. He wasn’t the only contender though, apparently there were five other actors on the list and tonight, two of those names have been revealed.
According to Superhero Movie News, the shortlist contains six individuals in total and aside from Driver, the studio is also looking at Ezra Miller and Penn Badgley. Unfortunately, the other contenders are still unknown but if these rumors are to believed, then Driver, Badgley and Miller make up one half of the shortlist.

Daniel Algrant.s career consists of three films produced with nearly a decade in between each project, as he followed 2002.s mediocre crime drama People I Know with this year.s biopic Greetings From Tim Buckley. But instead of waiting until 2022 to begin work on something else, he is lining up another interesting music-based film called Little Rootie Tootie, which has attracted the likes of Christopher Walken and Lenny Kravitz as its leads. I assume the film will eventually add the subtitle Are You Gonna Go My Way With More Cowbell. According to Deadline, the film will follow Walken as Sonny, a lifelong jazz pianist mourning the recent death of his wife. As Sonny becomes increasingly destructive, his son (Kravitz) returns home from Europe, where he and his wife are successful musicians in their own right. The three of them attempt to function as a well-oriented family, but the eccentric...

Plain ol’ everyday Christopher Walken is terrific just the way he is. The strange deadpan. The madness in his eyes. All great. But Christopher Walken set to music is even greater, and Little Rootie Tootie may provide us all with something we didn’t know we desperately needed. Walken has, according to Deadline, signed on to star as a virtuoso jazz pianist who slowly spirals into madness after losing his wife. One has to ask, of course, whether Walken would really “slowly spiral” into madness, or just “take a slight step to the left” into madness, but that’s hardly the point. Little Rootie Tootie may provide the opportunity to see a far jazzier Walken than we’ve ever experienced before (at least, not since 1981′s Pennies From Heaven, which features a Walken-centric musical number you absolutely track down on YouTube). Alongside Walken is Lenny Kravitz, who joins Little Rootie Tootie as the unstable pianist’s son...

Greetings from Tim Buckley
A promising young musician visits New York for a week to headline a tribute concert. He bonds with a young woman interning at the performance space, and they run around the city being chatty, artistic, and physically beautiful together. These would be the makings of a light and romantic film, except that the young man portrayed is musician Jeff Buckley in his early twenties and the concert he's been called for honors his father, prolific and renowned musician Tim Buckley, who breezed away from Jeff's mother before Jeff was born and died at age 28 without knowing his first child.

It's not an easy thing to play the girlfriend. Hollywood history is littered with actresses who have been cast a few times opposite high-profile male co-stars, and who even started making a name for themselves, but were destined to fade after just a few shots at big-screen girlfriend status. Imogen Poots, the 23-year-old British actress you may recognize from 28 Weeks Later or Jane Eyre, is on the rise, and that means-- you guessed it-- a lot of girlfriend parts. But in all of them, which includes the new film Greetings from Tim Buckley, you can see how she's making the most of it and turning these women not just into props for the male leads, but real characters. That's an especially hard job in Tim Buckley, in which Penn Badgley stars as a young Jeff Buckley, performing at a tribute concert for the father he barely knew, years before he...

Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley on playing Jeff Buckley, leaving La and his attempt to bring the World Cup to America
Hi! Where are you right now and what are you doing?
I am home in New York, eating oatmeal. It's one of the first beautiful days of the year, so I think I may go to the park. Lay in the sun, on the grass, get some fresh air. That's really all I have planned.
I thought movie stars were too busy to do that sort of thing?
When you're working hard and the hours are long, yeah. You're not sleeping much, you don't have the time or energy for anything else. But when you're not …
You can be a bum?
Exactly. It's a beautiful balance.
Your breakout role was playing Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl for six years, where you became a tabloid fixture (1). What was the best thing about it?...

While the film might not be quite as sweet and heady as drinking a glass of lilac wine, Penn Badgley's performance in "Greetings From Tim Buckley" does justice to the late Jeff Buckley, while also revealing that the "Gossip Girl" star has quite a few more talents than he's thus far been given credit for. But his swoop of wild hair and impressive vocal theatrics aside, the rest of the movie around him tells a trio of stories that never quite unite to land the emotional connection they're aiming for. "You look just like him," Jeff Buckley hears from more than one person as he walks into St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn for rehearsals for the tribute concert being put together for his father Tim. An absentee Dad, who died of an overdose at 28, Jeff never had much of a relationship with Tim, but the shadow looms large. By the time of his death,...

Despite playing Dan Humphrey for six seasons on "Gossip Girl," Penn Badgley doesn't exactly feel a kinship with his character, who turned out to be the elusive Gossip Girl her(him?)self.
In an interview with Salon in which Badgley talked about his upcoming film "Greetings From Tim Buckley," he took a not-so-subtle dig at the CW series.
“To be proud of something is a really nice feeling. And it’s a new feeling, and it’s something that I wanna keep going with. I can walk a little taller feeling that I don’t have to be constantly apologizing for the work that I’ve done in the past," he said.
Just last week, Badgley was on HuffPost Live discussing the big "Gossip Girl" reveal ... and admitted that he was pretty surprised that he ended being the face behind the name.
"It technically doesn't make sense for anyone to be Gossip Girl.

Daniel Algrant’s Greetings from Tim Buckley is supposed to be Penn Badgley’s revelatory moment as an actor. Playing singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, Badgley sings live on set and sounds eerily similar to Buckley as he goes into his upper register and harmonizes in abstract ways. Unfortunately, Badgley’s performance ultimately feels empty, as does the film as a whole. Despite being focused on real, complicated people with tragic lives (both at the height of their fame, Jeff’s father Tim died at 28 from an accidental overdose and Jeff drowned at 30), the film never allows the two Buckleys to come across as fully realized characters. It’s 1991 and Jeff Buckley is living in California, a struggling musician. Out of the blue, he gets a call asking him to come to Brooklyn to perform in a tribute concert for his father, who he only met twice in his lifetime. Jeff is bitter about the whole situation – celebrating the...

Penn Badgley takes on the role of singer Jeff Buckley in this week's Greetings From Tim Buckley, which follows a pre-fame Buckley as he comes to terms with his anger at the father he never knew.
Set in the days leading up to Buckley's debut public performance, at a 1991 tribute concert for his late father Tim Buckley, Daniel Algrant's drama sees Badgley give a versatile and subtle performance that'll allow you to forget all about Dan Humphrey.
Digital Spy caught up with Badgley to find out about his approach to the role, and the challenges of singing live on camera.
How familiar were you with Jeff Buckley's work before the script came your way?
"I was a fan. I was really moved by Jeff's Live at Sin-é album when I was about 17. I had fallen in love with that album and then mystified him as a figure but then,...

"I'm Gossip Girl," Penn Badgley says, laughing and shaking his head. "It is kind of funny. I wasn’t just on it. I am Gossip Girl." The 26-year old actor, wearing a day or two of stubble and a navy blue cardigan, is sitting in a hotel room in his native New York City, the town where he grew up in front of a generation of swooning girls on the CW's premiere teen soap opera. He's here to discuss his movie Greetings From Tim Buckley, but he can't yet escape the show. The show ended this past winter

Biopics about famous musicians are usually guaranteed to attract audiences. In most cases, the subject has achieved a status in the industry which warrants a big screen telling of the story of their life. Here we have Greetings From Tim Buckley, a film that may or may not be a biopic at all.
The film follows Jeff Buckley, son of late celebrated musician Tim Buckley, as he is summoned to play a tribute concert for his deceased father in New York City. As rehearsals for the event unfold, Jeff is forced to confront the truth about the father he never knew, and find a way to accept it.
It’s hard to categorize a film like “Greetings”. While we mostly follow young Jeff Buckley – who like his father, passed away at a tragically young age – the film is interspersed with scenes featuring Tim Buckley at the height of his music career.

The Tribeca Film Festival makes a good number of their films available to watch on VOD, from anywhere in the country, and one of the most promising titles is Greetings From Tim Buckley, which stars Gossip Girl veteran Penn Badgley as the legendary musician Jeff Buckley. Except, as you can see in the exclusive clip above, we're meeting Jeff Buckley at a time when he's still living in the shadow of his father, musician Tim Buckley, who's at the center of the tribute concert that gives the movie its title. The younger Buckley's performance at the tribute concert is credited for jump-starting his career in 1991, leading to the recording of his 1993 album Grace, which turned out to be his only one. Greetings from Tim Buckley has rolled out across the UK through VOD as of yesterday, April 16th, coinciding with the film’s digital release in the Us, ahead of its theatrical release next month.

Now in its 12th year, the Tribeca Film Festival is one of the premiere artistic showcases and industry marketplaces for independent cinema. Sundance might still be the place to go to discover new talent on the cheap, Toronto is the festival to generate Oscar buzz, but Tribeca has an eclectic mix that both reflects the soul of native New Yorkers and what the city means to the rest of the world as a cultural international capital. In between tonight’s opener — the music documentary Mistaken for Strangers about the National — and the closing night’s special screening of Martin Scorsese...

Scion of a folk music icon, Jeff Buckley followed his dad Tim's path to musical success until his death aged only 30. Rather than dwelling on the tragedy, Greetings From Tim Buckley majors on the lead-up to an episode in his life that linked him umbilically to his old man: a spine-chilling performance of Tim's songs at a 1991 tribute gig in New York. The film's new trailer (below) shows former Gossip boy Penn Badgley strap on the guitar to play Jeff. It's a seemingly gentle stroll along the hearthrob spectrum that must have tested his musical nous to its limits. Ben Rosenfield appears in flashback as Tim Buckley. brightcove.createExperiences();Those other familiar faces you might have spotted are Imogen Poots and William 'Col. Stuart' Sadler, who also appear in the drama.Greetings From Tim Buckley plays at Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival later this month. Mr De Niro...

Buckley was a very talented musician whose life was cut short when he died unexpectedly at the age of 30 in 1997. The movie looks fantastic and everyone looks like they do a terrific job. I'm a fan of Buckley's music, and I'm looking forward to seeing this. Here's the synopsis for the film...

So, how hard is it to make a Jeff Buckley movie if you don't have official access to his songs or life story? Apparently, not that hard. While "Mystery White Boy" continues to marinate, "Greetings From Tim Buckley" has cast, shot, played a major festival and is now getting ready for release. And you know what, it's not as much like Jackie Jormp-Jomp as you might think. Good luck to whoever gets cast as Jeff Buckley in the next movie, because Penn Badgley -- uneven as the movie turns out -- is actually pretty good. Granted, Badgley doesn't look much like the late singer and spends most of 'Buckley' sorta moping around, but when it comes time to sing, the dude delivers (here's a clip of him doing a full song). The movie centers on the leadup of Jeff's first public performance at a tribute concert for his late father Tim Buckley,...
